Whatever happened to tangerines?

It's citrus season in the northern hemisphere, and fruit trees are bursting with oranges and lemons. But CrowdScience listener Jonathan wants to know what happened to the tangerines he ate as a child in the 1960s? He remembers a fruit that was juicy, sweet and full of pips, found each Christmas at the bottom of his stocking. Tangerines today, he thinks, just don't compare. Crowdscience tries to track down this elusive fruit. Presenter Anand Jagatia traces the tangerine's origins back to Ancient China, as botanist David Mabberley explains that the name ‘tangerine' comes from a fruit that made its way from Asia, to Africa and the Moroccan port of Tangier, before arriving in the US in the early 1800s. Professor Tracy Kahn from UC Riverside tells us about the hybridisation process that goes into breeding modern tangerines, but says that while the season for these fruits has been dramatically extended, there's a cost in terms of diversity and flavour. Who better to help us track down this missing mandarin than a fruit detective? Well, that's one of pomologist David Karp's other job titles, and he reveals exactly which cultivar we might be looking for: the Dancy. So where can we find one? Over on Friend's Ranches in Ojai, California, Emily Ayala shows us two trees planted by her late grandfather, and explains that nothing grown since really matches its unique flavour. So what will listener Jonathan think when we send him a box? It can be tempting to think about restorative practices as something that we do. More broadly, restorative justice is about how we are in relationship with one another — as individuals, yes, but also as institutions. At a university, this can include addressing conduct violations, but also community building and classroom environment. Dr. David Karp and Christian Santa Maria are putting restorative practices to work on their Catholic college campus in each of these situations. In this episode, they share how restorative practices are taking shape at the University of San Diego in alignment with their university's mission and Catholic identity.

Here's the link: https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCPQFo8S5dUj16TJPuiRgwng Anyway, I have made a realization that all of my dumb animal characters may have entered our universe years and years and years ago before they were finally caught and were forced to do some acting as part of their web series. And yes, I call this "The Blimpy and Enzo Phenomenon." This is basically a part of our world centuries and centuries ago where Blimpy and Enzo and most of the other characters on my Youtube channel have made history, by making tons of pop culture references in many many eras, proof that they existed before ACNYC did. The top ones include: Blimpy and his establishment of Homer Simpson singing a song named after him twice, an inflatable suit from Mickey Mouse Clubhouse, and a Michigan restaurant called Blimpy Burger have made way for Blimpy to make more money than David Karp and Michelle Phan combined. Enzo and the establishment of a sushi restaurant in Québec, an SMG4 character, a DJ Snake song, and the birth of Enzo Ferrari have made way for him to go on The Price is Right and win a trip to Ferrari's gravesite. Otto's establishment of a pizza place in Portland, Maine and a 2001 PC game called Otto Matic caved the way for Otto to work formerly for Microsoft, then die, then come back to life after hearing Axel say he was gonna take him to a Petr Yan meet-and-greet. Axel's start of gaining the role of an elephant from Animal Crossing, a weirdo from Twisted Metal, and finally on the big screen in The Angry Birds Movie 2 gave him the opportunity to live in absolute wealth, even he still lives under a giant rock. Apple has only a few inspirations since he's named after a fruit, not the company, Applebee's, the character from Apple and Onion, or the Korean musical group Apple.B. Captain Necco's start of behaving like Captain Underpants and Major Man with the addition of NECCO Wafers, and Meowsles from Fortnite made him a WWE wrestler for 5 seconds. Blob's start of the Wii game De Blob, an amalgamation from FNAF Security Breach, and being an X-Men supervillain gave him nothing but a studio apartment. With a 3DO inside. The rest you learn later. This was my letter to David Karp at the St. Pete Times (813) 226-3352   You asked what was still being done to find Don and probably the most notable, I didn't even mention because I see it every day.  The poster of Don and Nyla (leopard) that we distributed for months following his disappearance was also circulated in Costa Rica and is still in the windows of my car, our house keeper's car, my daughter's car and many of our volunteers.  After you left, I looked around the parking lot at all of the signs and couldn't believe I didn't think to mention them.    It has been a year ago today that Don' disappeared without a trace.  Not a single clue has surfaced that can even answer the question “Is he dead or alive?”   I believe if he could be home, he would be here.  Were he homeless or in a facility, we would have found him by now.  He wouldn't be sitting idly by and letting attorneys eat up everything he worked for, so he can't be hiding.  I miss him so much.   Radar compiled a list of my phone messages and one was from Richard Martin.  Could this be THE Richard?  I was breathless.  All the message said was that he was returning my call.  That could be anybody about any thing.  Was it him?  The message had come almost a week ago and not given to me until today.  Would he think I was rude, or worse yet, fickle?  I couldn't wait to call him and yet was nearly paralyzed with fear.   I cleared my office, locked the door, took a few deep breaths and dialed.   Talking to Richard was like talking to an old friend.  I liked everything about him.  He reminded me of me.  Not only his interests and experiences, but his attitudes and beliefs mirrored my own.  I wanted to meet him because I wanted to talk to him, face to face.  It didn't matter what he looked like although he assured me that he had his own teeth and hair, as if it mattered.  I didn't ask him how old he was because I liked him so much that it didn't matter.  I have never liked being around young men, but even if he had been a young person, I don't think I would've cared.   He could've had two heads, but by the time I actually met him, I liked him so much I figured I could get used to it.  He suggested we meet on Thursday, August 20.   On Thursday he called and suggested we meet at Dagwood's but I misunderstood and drove to Dog Water's.  I went in and waited, but he didn't show.  Fifteen minutes went by and I had asked every man in the bar if his name was Richard and all of them said they wished it were, or they'd change it if that's what I wanted.  When the page came through, I couldn't find a phone.  My cell phone was dead, the one down the block had been ripped out of the wall and I finally asked to borrow the merchant's phone.   We retraced our steps to see how we could have been mistaken and finally agreed to meet at Skipper's Smokehouse.  When I drove up I saw a man standing out front, but immediately dismissed this as possibly being Richard, because I was expecting the two headed guy that was going to make this attraction such a challenge for me.   As I walked up I could tell by the way he looked at me that it was him.  This was too good to be true!   It was late and we virtually had the place to ourselves.  The more I learned about him, the more I liked him.  Being somewhat compulsive by nature and not too shy, I struggled with the overpowering desire to kiss him on the lips and ask where he had been all my life.  We asked all of the “get to know you questions” and I learned that he is the older of two children.  He described his sister as “beautiful”.  He said his father died too soon at 51 and that his mother was still alive and living in St. Pete.   He said that he had been a Councilman for St. Pete for two consecutive terms, but that he was usually the one who was against the politicians and for the people when it came time to vote.  His vote was not for sale to the wining and dining upper crust, which made him pretty unpopular among the political crowd, but wildly popular with the  people who elected him.  He told me that he had been a bachelor until he was 40 or so before he married but that after ten years he caught her in bed with his friend and divorced her.  He said that even though their marriage lacked “TLC” that he had never strayed and that he would've worked things out with her, had she tried, but she was in love with his friend and love was something that they had never really shared.  He said the sex was good, but that there just wasn't any tenderness.  No kissing or stroking,  none of the important stuff.   Everything inside me wanted to say “I will give you the tender loving kindness that you need!”  “I would be everything your heart desires, to have a man who was faithful to me!”  “I would never let you down or run around on you!”, but I kept my mouth shut.  One of the things I hate most about men is how within moments of meeting me they are telling me this sort of stuff and trying to get me in bed.  I couldn't say the things that were racing through my mind without making him wonder what kind of desperate nut case I am.  Besides, I am not free to say such things.  I am still a married woman and could be for at least another four years.   He was in a hurry to meet his new housekeeper who was going to be up at the lake house.  I thought about Don's interviews.  I felt jealous.  A live in housekeeper would have the benefit of being around him all the time.  She would be someone who could give him what he needed.  She would be easily accessible and very enamored by this wonderful man.  With all my money and obligations, I couldn't request the position.    He walked me around back to my truck, but stopped short.  He wasn't going to try and kiss me?  Now I really liked him!  As I drove away, I wondered, “Is he being respectful of me as a person, or did he not want to kiss me?”  He seemed to like me well enough, but he had such an easy temperament that maybe he was just being nice.  I wondered if he would ever call again.   The next day, Friday Aug. 21 he did and asked if I'd like to meet him at Bleachers to hear a comedian.  When I got there I walked past a gold Mercedes convertible coup and thought to myself that I wished I could bring myself to spend money on such a cute little “toy”.  I work so hard, but can't bring myself to splurge on luxury.  We listened to the comedian and were painfully observant of each other.  He was concerned that the comedian was too crude and I was concerned that he would think I wasn't enjoying myself because I don't get hysterical.  We were supposed to meet some friends of his that night, but I was glad to have the time alone with him.  I just couldn't learn enough about him.  After the show he asked if I'd like to go hear some jazz.  Lucky guess that it's my favourite sort of music?  He walked me out to that cute little Mercedes and I was just beside myself over the fact that it was his.  Cars don't' impress me much, but it was the idea "I have worked hard and I'm going to enjoy the fruits of my labours”.  The very attitude that I would like to embrace but have been too frugal to accept.  When he later walked me to my car, he kissed me.  It was a tender, friendly, almost timid kiss that said to me, “I like you and want to let you know, but I don't expect anything more”.   Saturday and Sunday I was tied up all day with Dateline NBC filming a piece about the Bed and Breakfast we offer with the cats.  Sunday the St. Pete Times ran a story on Don's one year anniversary of his disappearance.  Aug. 25, Tuesday Richard asked me to come eat at The Brown Dog in the building next to his.  It was so late by the time I got there that we had Sushi instead.  I was determined to never put raw fish in my mouth, but he made me want to try it.  I liked it actually.  I had a generator in the back of my pick up to deliver to my Dad the following day for his birthday, so Richard asked his tenant at the Save A Step convenience store to keep an eye on it.  When we came back for my truck he asked if I'd like to go see his condo, and before I could answer, he retracted and said, “Never mind.  It's late and you need to go.”  It was late and I did need to go, but I didn't want to.  I wanted to be welcomed into his home but I also feared that he would ask more of me than was mine to give and I feared worse that I wouldn't be able to resist him.   This full page ad is run gratis by Fred Timby, owner of the Hillsborough County Hot Sheet and the Pasco County Hotsheet, twice a month in both of his publications.  These publications go out to a lot of investors and people who know Don and with whom Don would likely be in contact.    If you go to our web site the first page you will see is a family portrait of Don, Jamie and I, along with Perfection (ocelot) and Sundari (leopard) and a notice about Don's disappearance and a plea for information.  Thank you for taking the time to try and help us find him.  I remember think gin during the investigation that if the police had been as thorough as you were in following up leads we should have found him.  For the Animals, Carole Lewis Their senior year, Anwen invited Sameer into a process of restorative justice. This story features *both* Anwen and Sameer, talking about how they worked through sexual assault using restorative justice. What does it sound like for a survivor to get her needs met? How do you win the morning?

Student Of Life Podcast

Play Episode Listen Later Jul 30, 2017 27:59

Do you start your day with a win every day? Are you on offense or do you start your day playing defense?   A morning routine is hugely important because it protects your energy and confidence. When you start the day with a routine where you know exactly what you’re going to do, it’s kind of like starting an engine. You get that thing rolling because you just go through the same process every day. There is no decision to make. There is no problem to solve. You just do the same thing on a regular basis to get the day going.   Remember the biggest drains of energy and confidence are problem solving and decision-making. Morning rituals and routines take all of that out of the equation.   Mark Twain said, ‘Eat a live frog first thing in the morning and nothing worse will happen to you the rest of the day.’   You want to use the morning, when you have the most energy and the most confidence, to get the big things done in your day.   Are you operating each day in your purpose, the reason God created you? Are you doing things every day to move closer to making your vision for your life and business reality?   Put a positive spin on your day. Start by instead of saying “I have to do this,” say “I get to do this.” This is one of the best times in the history of the world. In terms of technology, peace, abundance, the ability to succeed and opportunities to thrive. We get to do amazing things, things that move us toward our vision, toward our purpose. And if you’re starting your day with those sorts of things and thinking about them, it is going to help you move forward.   Every successful person has some sort of morning routine or ritual. Margaret Thatcher, one of the greatest leaders in the history of the western world, used to get up every day at 5 AM so she could listen to Farming Today on the BBC. David Karp, the founder of Tumblr, never looks at any of his emails until he arrives at work. So he starts the day on offense.   If you get up and the first thing you do is grab your device and start looking at your texts and emails and responding to what the world has thrown at you, you’re immediately on defense. You need to get your mind right, you need to get your body right, you need to get your spirit right before you start your day.   Jim Kwik just did a great podcast all about his morning rituals. His morning routine is very involved. Check out Kwik Brain, Episode 16 http://jimkwik.com/kwik-brain-016/ He goes into his nutrition. He even talks about the type of shower he takes. He gets very detailed about how he starts his day.   Ben Franklin—one of the smartest people in the history of our country, a true entrepreneur, a true thinker and philosopher—has a very famous outline of what his typical day looked like. He had a 3-hour morning ritual he did every day. He always started his day with the question, “What good shall I do this day?” So if you read from what he has on his morning routine, it says, “Rinse, wash, and address powerful goodness.” He was a pretty successful guy who accomplished many great things.   What are you doing every morning? Do you have a ritual you follow? Do you have a routine you follow? Do you have a certain time you get up every day? What do you do to give yourself a win first thing in the morning? What do you do to set up your day where you will have a great success?   Joe’s Morning Routine Joe has different morning routines for different days of the week. On Monday, Wednesday and Friday, he will get up and go to the gym in the morning.   Last week (StudentOfLifePodcast.com/7) we talked about flipping the switch, making blanket decisions you make once, forever. So on Sunday, Tuesday, and Thursday nights, Joe has already made that blanket decision he will be getting up to go to the gym next morning. The alarm clock goes off at 4:21, which is precise and intentional because it plants a seed in the brain about beginning the day intentionally and with purpose.   As he gets up, he is saying a little prayer, “God let me be awesome today.” He gets ready easily because the night before he already prepared a gym bag, clothes for the day at work, a pre-work out shake and a protein shake. He gets a big drink of water, gathers his things and gets in the car. Joe has his phone with him but hasn’t looked at it yet. Six months ago he made the decision not to look at his phone anymore until after he’s done some things to get on offense for the day. In the car, the seat heater goes on to loosen Joe’s back before he gets to the gym. He turns on the app on the phone that does a daily reading from the bible and listens to that on the way into town. That gives his brain a chance to start easing into the day. Also, Joe knows spending time with God to start his day means he will have a better day.   At the gym, Joe walks on the treadmill for 30 minutes to loosen up his body, drink his pre-workout shake and give him time to work through his mind. It’s important to give your brain free space to breath and a chance to work on problems without lots of clutter. So whatever the brain has been mulling over at night, Joe will think about during that 30 minutes on the treadmill. Otherwise he will turn on a podcast and pour some wisdom into his head.   Then he meets up with a group and does a boot camp style work out. This is great for accountability, but also because having a trainer who is leading the boot camp means Joe doesn’t have to think or make decisions. All he has to do is show up and do what the trainer says. After the workout, Joe has his protein shake, takes a shower and get dressed.   By this time it’s 7.30am, and having been up since 4.21am, Joe is fully awake and full of energy. It’s a big win to start the day and he feels good about himself. It recharges his battery and protects his energy and confidence for the day. Next it’s off to the coffee shop to do morning planning. Typically this involves spending 10 minutes reading scripture or a devotional, and then journaling thoughts. After that, he tackles any problems that need to be solved, such as presentations to prepare. And finally, the last thing is writing out a task list for the day. The task list always includes Joe’s Big 3: At least one item each working ON his business, working IN his business, and personal development. These are the key things that help move him forward in all three areas.   Starting the day on offense like this means Joe knows whatever happens the rest of the day, he is following the agenda he set for the day, rather than just responding to other people and other stimulus. It gets things off on the right foot.   The morning ritual starter kit Feed 3 Feed your spirit. Schedule quiet time. Pray. Be somewhere inspiring. Feed your mind. Spend some time studying, getting education, or gaining knowledge. Feed your body. It's not just food, it's taking care of your body by working out and getting moving. It doesn’t have to be a hard workout; start the day getting the blood flowing.   Protect 3 Protect your energy. Make sure you’ve gotten sleep, don’t look at emails or texts. Be on offense not defense. Protect your will power. Do this by making blanket decisions, and when you do your planning, make sure you figure out the most energy draining thing, and tackle it first. Protect your confidence. Plan, focus your day and have a block of time where you’re working in your purpose.   Work 3 This is the Big Three Work ON your business. Work IN your business. Work on yourself.   Feed Three, Protect Three, and Work Three. That’s a great framework on which to build a Morning Ritual. If you don't already have one, make it your starting point. Study yourself and figure out what works for you. Try things and get on a schedule where every day you go through a routine that gives you energy and gets you fired up for the day. You continue to do it and it becomes muscle memory.   Remember, the first step to success is learning how to win the morning. If you win the morning that gives you a chance of winning the day. When you win enough days in a row them you have success and fulfillment.   If you haven’t already, hit the subscribe button on iTunes or Stitcher.
