In the final episode of Eras: The Beatles, we hear the story behind The Beatles' final single Now and Then, including new interviews with Paul McCartney and Ringo Starr. Narrated by Martin Freeman, the episode also features insight on the new track from Sean Ono Lennon, Olivia Harrison and Peter Jackson. In 1994, Yoko Ono gave Paul McCartney, George Harrison and Ringo Starr a selection of unfinished demo tapes recorded by John Lennon in the 1970s. Two of those songs, Free as a Bird and Real Love, were arranged and released on 1995's Beatles: Anthology project. A third demo was never completed. At the time, the tape was deemed too muddy to work with. But, decades later, a new machine-assisted learning programme, pioneered by Get Back director Peter Jackson and his team, made Now and Then, the final Beatles single, possible – with each Beatle performing on the track.Listen to the story of how it came about as Paul McCartney, Ringo Starr and more reflect on the decades and discuss the making of the band's last song.

Olivia Harrison is a prizewinning film producer and charity director. Last year she published Came the Lightening, a poignant collection of twenty poems dedicated to her late husband George Harrison of the Beatles. George died in November 2001, at the age of just 58, and Olivia describes her poems as ‘thoughts, feelings and words about life and death, but mostly love and our journey to the end'. Olivia grew up in Los Angeles, and in her early 20s she joined A&M Records. She first met George in 1974 through her work, and went on to help run his Dark Horse record label. They married four years later. Olivia has protected George's musical legacy since his death and continued the work of the Material World Foundation, the charity he founded 50 years ago. She also worked with Martin Scorsese to create an acclaimed, Emmy-winning documentary about George. Olivia's musical choices include Bach, Mozart and Ravi Shankar, as well as recordings from Mexico and Bulgaria.

In this episode of the Speaking Out of Place podcast, Professor David Palumbo-Liu interviews Olivia Harrison, author of a new book entitled, Natives Against Nativism, which takes on the appropriation of the figure of the “native,” or in the French case, the “indigene” to serve progressive and indeed revolutionary causes, but also its appropriation by the alt-right both in France and internationally to drive a reactionary program against so-called anti-white racism. The conversation covers a lot of ground, from a discussion of the basic premises of the French Republic, to unpacking the long history of anti-racist struggles in France, to the period of the late 1960s and 1970s, where we see in particular the figure of the Palestinian, and of the American Indian, play enormous roles in the radical imaginary. Olivia discusses the ways things like the “Great Replacement Theory” signal a convergence of US and French anti-right “nativism,” and use photographs, films, and poetry to show the complexity of this terrain, perhaps best illustrated by the collaboration between French avant-garde film maker Jean-Luc Godard and the pre-eminent Palestinian poet, Mahmoud Darwish. Olivia C. Harrison is Associate Professor of French and Comparative Literature at the University of Southern California. Her research focuses on postcolonial North African, Middle Eastern, and French literature and film, with a particular emphasis on transcolonial affiliations between writers and intellectuals from the Global South. Her publications include Natives against Nativism: Antiracism and Indigenous Critique in Postcolonial France (University of Minnesota Press, 2023), Transcolonial Maghreb: Imagining Palestine in the Era of Decolonization (Stanford University Press, 2016), and essays on Maghrebi literature, Beur and banlieue cultural production, and postcolonial theory. It's the grand finale of 1984 - a year in Beatles history full of big swings, big misses, and new beginnings for the remaining three former Beatles. Despite the musical successes of Paul's latest project, the US flop of McCartney's Give My Regards to Broadstreet film left a bitter taste in the mouth of its creator - blaming frustrated screenwriters-turned critics for its failures. The Maccas put on a happy face for the UK premiere, palling around with co-stars Ringo Starr and Barbara Bach...as well as Olivia Harrison who attended the function in her husband's stead. George was in New Zealand at the time promoting Dereck Taylor's memoir and, when asked about the film, had nice things to say. But George did more than talk - taking the stage for the first time in years to jam with Deep Purple in Sydney Australia...perhaps signaling a contemplation of a return to music after several years adrift... Maggie LePique speaks with celebrating author, and educator Ashley Khan about the enduring legacy of George Harrison,  a British guitarist, singer, songwriter and film producer. As a member of the Beatles, he achieved international fame and renown. During his career, he developed as a songwriter in his own right and wrote many best selling songs. In addition to music, Harrison was interested in Hindu spirituality and was a devotee of the Hare Krishna movement. George also founded the Material World Charitable Foundation, or MWF, on 26 April 1973, close to two years after he had organised the Concert for Bangladesh in New York as a benefit for refugees of the Bangladesh Liberation War. MWF is still active and Olivia Harrison (George's widow) is Director of the Charitable Organization. My guest Ashley Kahn,  is a Grammy-winning author, educator, music journalist, and concert producer. His books include A Love Supreme: The Story of John Coltrane's Signature Album and Kind of Blue: The Making of the Miles Davis Masterpiece. He teaches at New York University's Clive Davis Institute for Recorded Music.Ashley also edited the book: George Harrison on George Harrison is an authoritative, chronologically arranged anthology of Harrison's most revealing and illuminating interviews, personal correspondence, and writings, spanning the years 1962 to 2001. Though known as the “Quiet Beatle,” Harrison was arguably the most thoughtful and certainly the most outspoken of the famous four. This compendium of his words and ideas proves that point repeatedly, revealing his passion for music, his focus on spirituality, and his responsibility as a  celebrity, as well as a sense of deep commitment and humor.Source: https://tisch.nyu.edu/about/directory/clive-davis-institute/1417614318Source: https://www.materialworldfoundation.comSource: https://www.amazon.com/George-Harrison-Interviews-Encounters-Musicians/dp/1641600519This episode is from an archive from the KPFK program Profiles adapted for podcast.Host Maggie LePique, a radio veteran since the 1980's at NPR in Kansas City Mo. Welcome to the second segment of our second miniseries for the year showcasing some incredible women in science thanks to the L'Oréal-UNESCO For Women in Science fellowship program. While our running miniseries wasn't sequential and could be listened to in any order, I'd recommend going back to last week's episode for the full introduction to the program and the landscape before digging into this one. A stat that definitely deserves another mention, however, is that only 28% of researchers today are women with less than 20% making up the most senior leadership positions, and only 3% of Scientific Nobel Prizes have been awarded to women. So, L'Oréal, a company brought to life by scientists 100 years ago, are dedicated to changing those statistics and have awarded five outstanding women in the industries broadly referred to as STEMM – science, technology, engineer mathematics and medicine – a fellowship to help them further their groundbreaking research. One of the biggest challenges for women in these areas is a lack of exposure to career paths and role models, so L'Oréal has also created a Girls in Science program to highlight for school students how diverse, dynamic and deeply impactful pathways in science can be. And since the in person events weren't able to go ahead, I'm so honoured that these Seize the Yay episodes will take their place and be distributed to young girls who are just starting to think about their way to yay so that a new generation of young scientists might see a future for themselves in the sciences. Our first two guests last week absolutely bowled me over – Dr Mahdokht Shaibani is an Iranian battery engineer working on cleaner alternatives to lithium batteries and Dr Kirsty Nash is a marine biologist looking at the relationship between changing nutrient production from fisheries and coral reefs on one hand and micronutrient deficiencies in humans on the other. This week our three mini-interviews focus more on medical breakthroughs in epilepsy, neuroscience, cardiovascular health and anxiety. I hope you find Dr Philippa Karoly, Dr Jiawen Li and Dr Olivia Harrison as inspiring as I did!Find out more about the FWIS fellowship here.+ Announcements on Insta at @spoonful_of_sarah+ Join our Facebook community here+ Subscribe to not miss out on the next instalment of YAY!

Daniel, Shahbaz, & Anthony review THE BEATLES: GET BACK, a Disney+ original docuseries directed by Peter Jackson. It is produced by Paul McCartney, Ringo Starr, Yoko Ono Lennon, Olivia Harrison, Jonathan Clyde, Clare Olssen and Peter Jackson, with Apple Corps' Jeff Jones and Ken Kamins serving as executive producers. The docuseries will debut exclusively on Disney+ November 25, 26, and 27, 2021.Listen now on all podcast feeds and on TheMoviePodcast.caContact: hello@themoviepodcast.ca“The Beatles: Get Back” takes audiences back in time to the band's January 1969 recording sessions, which became a pivotal moment in music history. The docuseries showcases The Beatles' creative process as they attempt to write 14 new songs in preparation for their first live concert in over two years. Faced with a nearly impossible deadline, the strong bonds of friendship shared by John Lennon, Paul McCartney, George Harrison, and Ringo Starr are put to the test. The docuseries is compiled from nearly 60 hours of unseen footage shot over 21 days, directed by Michael Lindsay-Hogg in 1969, and from more than 150 hours of unheard audio, most of which has been locked in a vault for over half a century. Jackson is the only person in 50 years to have been given access to this Beatles treasure trove, all of which has now been brilliantly restored. What emerges is an unbelievably intimate portrait of The Beatles, showing how, with their backs against the wall, they could still rely on their friendship, good humor, and creative geniusFOLLOW USDaniel on Twitter, Instagram, and LetterboxdShahbaz on Twitter, Instagram, and LetterboxdAnthony on Twitter, Instagram, and LetterboxdThe Movie Podcast on Twitter, Instagram, TikTok, Discord, and YouTubeThe Movie Podcast is on a mission to hit 200 Apple Podcast reviews, click here to head over to our show page on APPLE PODCASTS and leave us a 5 STAR review!ABOUTThe Movie Podcast is one of Canada's top film and review podcasts. Andrei Dobre has more than 10 years of experience in the non-government sector and is currently working on his PhD in Sociology. He works as a Monitoring and Evaluation Officer for the Romanian Angel Appeal Foundation, which was originally founded by Linda McCartney, Yoko Ono, Barbara Bach, and Olivia Harrison. Andrei discusses how there’s been a chemsex explosion in Romania in just a short amount of time (two years) and he has already lost friends to it.   TAKEAWAYS: [2:55] How did Andrei first get into this work? [6:25] What is the current situation in Bucharest, Romania when it comes to chemsex? [7:25] Andrei has personally lost two friends due to chemsex. [8:55] A lot has changed within two years and the chemsex scene has become much more lively. [10:45] The professionals in the region don’t really know how to help or counsel for this and the LGBTQ community is experiencing a lot of stigma. [12:05] Where does the meth come from in Romania? [13:40] Andrei shares a stat about new HIV cases. This is the first time gay men have appeared second on the list for new HIV cases in Romania. Traditionally, it’s been through heterosexual sex and injected drug users. [15:25] What is gay life like over in Romania? [19:10] Change is slow, but it is happening in Romania! [19:55] How are hookup apps affecting the chemsex scene? [21:10] What kind of programs or help can the LGBTQ community seek during this emerging epidemic? [25:30] Andrei sent out a call to various countries to see who would be interested in partnering up with him to improve the situation in Romania. 15 countries answered that call.   RESOURCES:   Romanian Angel Appeal Foundation   QUOTES: “Romania is more like a transit country and not a producer and all the drug substances are in transit on their way to the west.”  “Things are changing in society. Since 2004, only 1,000-2,000 participants have attended the pride parade. Last year, 15,000 attended.”  “At this moment, we have no professionals and no services developed in Bucharest for this specific target group.” “Neighboring countries, Eastern Europe like Bulgaria, Serbia, Albania, Croatia, Ukraine, told me that they have no services, it is happening, they have a problem, but don’t know what to do.”

A demo of the obscure Charlie Dore song "Fear of Flying" recorded one day in 1979/1980 when Dore visited Harrison's house was rediscovered by Olivia Harrison while searching through George's archives, a section of which was used on the Jools Holland show on BBC Radio 2. Olivia Harrison: "It's a demo, it's not embellished, it's just him, George, on an acoustic guitar. I don't know how he'd feel about it being played, but I think it's really sweet." Written by the lady herself, backed by "Hula Valley" and produced by Bruce Welch and Alan Tarney for Island records, "Fear Of Flying" was Charlie's Dore's debut single. And it didn't fly! She learned her lesson, or maybe her record buying public did, and her next release literally flew: "Pilot Of The Airwaves". The latter went on to become an enduring radio favourite, reaching #13 on the US Billboard Hot 100, earning Dore the Record World New Female Artist of the Year, an ASCAP award and charting in Canada, Australia and Europe. George's demo is a great find. But that was not enough for the BDJ team. Based on the fragment (ca 1 minute) of the acoustic demo, we recreated the complete song, as it would have sounded if George had finished it.

New York Times bestselling author Vivek Tiwary of The Fifth Beatle joins host Robin Milling for Let's Do Lunch! at Giorgio's. A Beatles fan since the womb, it was a passion project 21 years in the making for Vivek to tell the untold story of The Beatles manager and founder Brian Epstein. Through years of interviews with people who knew him, the tale of seeing them at The Cavern Club to bringing them to the world stage unfolds in this graphic novel illustrated by Andrew C. Robinson. A film is already in the works based on the novel, with Bring It On director Peyton Reed at the helm.  Casting is a bit hush hush but there will be plenty of music due to unlimited access to the Lennon/McCartney catalog. What Vivek may have in common with Epstein is not taking 'no' for an answer. He even has the four rejection letters to prove it. He says, “That's what Brian Epstein went through. He got rejected for The Beatles by every single record label!” 'Thumbs up' came from Paul McCartney, Ringo, Yoko Ono and Olivia Harrison. Vivek was especially pleased with McCartney's review and his warmth about Brian's memory. He did famously say, 'If anyone was the fifth Beatle, it was Brian.'
