The knowledge shared in conversation and in Dr. Ratey's books is inspirational and potentially life changing. “Let's talk about workplace. I mean, it has been a big bonus to include exercise opportunities in the workday, whether that means extended breaks or membership in the gyms or having some … yoga instructors in a couple afternoons a week during their lunch period, stuff like that to encourage wellness on the job.” Dr. John J RateyAbout Dr. John J. We at Insight Mind Body Talk have decided our official season will run September – May, taking each summer to re-visit our “most downloaded” episodes. Why most downloaded? Jess may have her favorites, Jeanne too, but what matters most to IMBT is listening to your voice. And we heard you loud and clear through the number of downloads each episode received. What does re-visiting mean? Well, basically, that you'll be hearing the original episode again. But this time, prior to the episode, Jess will giving inside information about her thoughts on the content, highlighting key moments, and sharing additional tips not mentioned during the episode. Adults living with ADHD, an "ADHD MythBusters". Jess and guest Lynn Hyland, clinical psychologist, explore the experiences of someone with Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD). What it is, how the body and mind are influenced, and identify common misconceptions of people living with ADHD. Lynn provides tools to help manage ADHD symptoms and feel more confident moving through life. It's a relevant episode for any person with ADHD as well as their neurotypical allies. They also talked about the role of a family in helping a person struggling with addiction to seek treatment and retaliation. The Why Intervention Podcast is aimed at helping family and friends feel supported and encouraged that recovery from addiction is possible, for themselves as well as their loved ones. You'll hear how to affect positive change in their life and help your loved one begin a successful recovery. Host Christopher Doyle shares his insights, talks with experts, and interviews people who have gone through recovery. Links and Resources from this Episode ADHD 2.0 by Edward M. Hallowell and John J. Everybody's carrying a burden that's weighing them down. If you dare to care, it is inevitable you will end up carrying the burdens from grief, betrayal, and rejection. And these burdens are often unseen. These invisible struggles fuel loneliness, shame, and despair. Eventually, the unaddressed burdens we carry start to impact our ability to live and lead in ways that are important to us. They take their toll on the quality of our work, our relationships, and our well-being. Yet, instead of transforming the pains from abuse, betrayal, loss, shame, poverty, chronic health struggles and so on, we see them as a poor reflection on our ability to lead, succeed, and provide. We have breathed in the clear and emphatic message: Hide your pain. These toxic messages around struggle take a dangerous toll on how we care for ourselves and others. To engage our teams, support wellbeing, and lead through change, we must model and explore real and honest emotions. My guest today is dedicating his life's work to change culture's toxic messages around struggle and how we approach the burdens we carry. I am so thrilled Dr. Frank Anderson came back for a continuation of our important conversation we started last month. Dr. Frank Anderson is one of the nation's leading mental health professionals as a psychiatrist and psychotherapist. Committed to promoting compassion, hope, healing, and non-violence in the world, Frank specializes in the treatment of trauma and dissociation and is passionate about teaching brain-based psychotherapy and integrating current neuroscience knowledge with the Internal Family Systems model of therapy. He also travels around the world as a proponent and instructor of the IFS modality. Listen to the full episode to hear: How the physiology of hyper- and hypo-arousal in the face of injustice pulls us away from our values and toward burnout, and how leading with love and compassion builds sustainable learning and growth Why ADHD and trauma are so frequently comorbid, and the neuroscience of how they continue to compound each other Why simply shutting down your inner critic isn't working, and a compassionate model of healing from IFS that relieves and heals their burdens How trauma exists on a wide spectrum, and why acknowledging trauma needs to be seen as a strength Learn more about Frank Anderson, MD: FrankAndersonMD.com Instagram: @frank_andersonmd Twitter: @FrankAndersonMD Connect on Facebook Learn more about Rebecca: rebeccaching.com Work With Rebecca Sign up for the Weekly Rumble Email Resources: Transcending Trauma: Healing Complex Ptsd with Internal Family Systems, Frank Anderson Driven to Distraction: Recognizing and Coping with Attention Deficit Disorder, Edward M. In these crazy-making times, more people than ever think about seeking help, but some hesitate because of stigma. Today's guest, Edward M. Hallowell, M.D., a renowned psychiatrist, takes us on an unflinchingly candid tour behind the scenes with his new book, Because I Come From a Crazy Family: The Making of a Psychiatrist. As a boy, he heard the call to become a psychiatrist. His childhood was surrounded by dysfunction, which he later identified as mental illness. His father was manic-depressive, his mother was an alcoholic and his stepfather was abusive. Later, when asked “Why do you want to become a psychiatrist?” he would answer, “Because I come from a crazy family.” Dr. Hallowell's desire to become a psychiatrist came from a place of love–he loved his family and wanted to help them. He credits his love and connection to his family, friends and mentors, as the thing that helped him beat the odds and build a happy, successful life, even if it was seasoned by many harrowing moments.
Kathryn interviews psychiatrist Edward M. Hallowell MD, author of “Because I Come From a Crazy Family: The Making of a Psychiatrist”. Hallowell's childhood was surrounded by dysfunction, a manic-depressive father, alcoholic mother and an abusive step-father. Hallowell's memoir is a paean to the mentally ill and those who love them. He's featured on Oprah, CNN, NPR, 60 minutes, and in US News and World Report, the NYTimes, Washington Post and the Harvard Business Review. Kathryn also interviews Alyce Desrosiers LCSW, author of “The Nanny Manual: How to Choose and Nurture the Perfect Childcare Partner”. What's the secret to hiring the right nanny? Desrosiers takes parents on a journey of self-discovery to help them with one of the most important hiring decisions they'll ever make. She is the founder of the non-profit The Institute for Families and Nannies dedicated to supporting relationships between families and nannies and is the author of Nannies for Modern Moms.
Jun 04: Brendan Kiely’s Tradition May 16, 2018 High school English teacher Brendan Kiely was always on the hunt for books that would not only excite his students to learn the skills needed to study and practice in class, but also inspire them to think critically about their role in society, developing who they are and helping form their beliefs. Award-winning author Kiely explores the insidious nature of a traditional boarding school in Tradition (is not an excuse). Brendan is a New York Times bestseller whose numerous awards include the Walter Dean Myers Award, and Best Fiction for Young Adults by the American Library Association twice. Later, Dr. Edward M. Hallowell turned an eye inward towards his emotionally complex upbringing, using it to build a successful life and career. He chronicles his childhood inspiration in his new memoir, Because I Come From a Crazy Family: The Making of a Psychiatrist. Dr. Hallowell is a bestselling author of over 20 books on attention deficit disorder and emotional well-being. He is founder of the Hallowell Centers for Cognitive and Emotional Health, one of which is based in Seattle. His national tour brings him to University Bookstore in Seattle on June 15th.

In this episode, Mary Ann will explain how to: Prioritize you tasks into appropriate "buckets" with predefined criteria Manage the expectations of others Master email - which for me, has been the most valuable aspect of her training "You can do anything you want, you just can't do everything." 125 | Success Despite ADHD Hello everybody. Tom Nardone here, This week, we had the pleasure of speaking to Dan Spears. Dan learned of his ADHD as a result of the problems it was causing in his marriage. This episode hit especially close to home for me. Dan saw a therapist in the fall of 2015. He was diagnosed and given a prescription. The therapist he was seeing at the time recommended he read, “Driven to Distraction” which was somewhat helpful. While the book spoke of helping with strategies, it was the emotional side of things that presented the biggest challenges in his life. Dan speaks of his experience with procrastination, accountability and memory. These issues have caused problems for him, and consequently for his wife in their communications with one another. Dan cannot recall the simplest of things to memory when his wife engages him, in what should be a normal conversation. He has trouble not just remembering names, but entire events of which he was a part of. He often has only vague memories of things they have done or places they have been to. Those of us with ADHD know this feeling all too well. Our inability to focus on the things we are doing, prevents us from being able to recall them later. This causes those who know and love us to feel like we are not interested in them or in the things they say to us or do with us. This is not just a problem with our families. We struggle at work where forgetting something can present a completely different set of problems. We see the so called “regular people” and wonder how they seem to master interactions and tasks with little to no effort. We wonder what they have that we do not. We ask ourselves, “Is it something we will ever learn?” We ask ourselves, “How to they do this without having to look for a strategy” For many of us, this is where we begin to feel inferior or not good enough. Those of us with ADHD will usually take one of two paths. We will simply give up or mentally check-out and accept defeat, or we will seek the help of a professional. Thankfully Dan Spears has chosen the latter. Dan works in IT and a big part of his job is preparing time sheets. This is very important because it is the way they ensure that clients are billed properly. This is where Dan struggles the most. He has tried many different methods to achieve this but nothing has worked for him in the long term. We invite you to listen as Eric discusses solutions and helps Dan not only develop new strategies, but leaves him with a genuine enthusiasm about their implementation on this 125th episode of ADHD reWired. Bio: Dan Spears Dan is a 36-year-old native of Liverpool, England, who unfortunately does not sound like one of the Beatles. He immigrated to the US in 2005, landing in Texas, then ventured north to Ohio in 2010, where he lives with his wife, 3 step-children, and 2 cats and according to Dan, a rabbit that hates him. Dan was finally diagnosed with ADHD in 2015. Stay tuned to ADHD reWired for follow-up sessions with past guests who have allowed Eric to help them and keep up with their progress. Hey!
