What topic would you like us to cover next? What does it really take to build a successful SaaS business from scratch with no funding? Emeric Ernoult knows the answer all too well - he went three years without a salary while bootstrapping Agorapulse, now one of the world's leading social media management platforms. The journey began in 2000 with a community-building software before "social media" was even coined as a term. For nearly a decade, his team struggled with a product that was ahead of its time and in the wrong market (France, in French). The pivotal shift came when they recognized Facebook's dominance and evolved their offering to meet what social media managers actually needed daily: tools to manage comments, schedule posts, and measure results.Emeric's breakthrough innovation - the social media inbox - transformed how professionals handle online communications. Rather than the chaotic column view popularised by early tools like Hootsuite and TweetDeck, Agorapulse organised incoming content chronologically like an email inbox. This seemingly obvious solution propelled them from zero to $5 million in revenue before competitors eventually copied it.Emeric categorises his costliest mistakes: hiring without clearly defining roles, ignoring gut feelings about unsuitable candidates, delaying necessary terminations, creating overly complex pricing models, and attempting go-to-market strategies without proper expertise. "I can count the smart things I've done on two hands," he admits, "but I'd need several bodies to count my mistakes."Today, Agorapulse is tackling social media's biggest challenge: proving ROI. Their patent-pending technology connects social activities directly to website conversions, showing which specific posts, comments, and replies drive business results. It's this innovation that's helping social media managers finally gain the respect and budgets they deserve from sceptical executives. Is your marketing strategy ready for 2025? This podcast interview focuses on the entrepreneurial journey to create a sticky and healthy B2B SaaS business. My guest is Emeric Ernoult, Founder and CEO of Agorapulse. Emeric is a serial entrepreneur with 20 years of experience in social media and SaaS. He co-founded affinitiz, one of the first modern social network SaaS platforms in France in the early 2000s. In 2010 he founded Agorapulse, social media platform. He grew it from generating €140,000 in annual revenue to achieving the same figure every three days, without taking significant outside funding.  This makes Agorapulse an inspiring bootstrapped SaaS success story. Hence I invited Emeric to my podcast. We explore his insights on what it takes to create a successful B2B SaaS company without having to rely on external funding. He shares is big lessons learned running the business through a PLG motion, and explains why they've pivoted to a sales-led SaaS motion, thereby moving up market. Last but not least, he elaborates on his approach to customer segmentation, creating measurable business value, and how to enable constant evolution Here's one of his quotes "Do not raise money. VC firms and investors are going to tell you that you're going to get more than money... if you don't know how to leverage that money, you're basically just given away part of your company for something that you're not going to get value from." During this interview, you will learn four things: Why you should prioritize investing in amazing customer support, especially when bootstrapping and the product is still evolving How to go about hiring people that have the highest chance to bring your company success What to focus on when you want to transition from PLG to a sales-led motion His first principle when it comes to prioritizing features to create products people start talking about and keep talking about.  For more information about the guest from this week: Emeric Ernoult Website: Agora Pulse Subscribe to the Daily SaaS Reflection Get my free, 1 min daily reflection on shaping a B2B SaaS business no one can ignore. The guest on the second episode of the Struggle is Emeric Ernoult, CEO and Co-founder of social media platform AgoraPulse. On that subset of the show, we aim to tell the part of the SaaS journey often omitted: the struggle to get traction. A struggle which sometimes ends in success but other times in failure. His story of struggle dates back to July of 2000 when as a successful business lawyer, Emeric found first hand a fundamental truth about the human existence - money alone will never make you happy. Earning close to €17,000 euros a month at the age of 27, Emeric was already destined for a comfortable and wealthy life. But his heart said no to that comfortable perspective. Instead, he wanted to build his own company. He started a business on the side with a friend of his. The idea they were working on was a social network, not too different from Facebook which launched 4 years later. But as it can sometimes be the case, for one company and idea to lift off, timing is key. With the dot-com crash about to happen, Emeric and his co-founder had picked the wrong year to start a web business. What has followed are 15 years of playing around with different ideas, going back and forth between his law career and the business, with the struggle never really subsiding, until AgoraPulse began to take shape but it would still take a lot of time to make it work. At times it felt excruciating and Emeric's personal life would take the toll on this. But he couldn't let it go. This is the story of AgoraPulse: 18 years in the making. To hear more about the early years of AgoraPulse, listen back to the episode we recorded with Emeric in 2016. You can also watch his very candid presentation from SaaStock17.

Are you avoiding third party apps for social media posting? Do you want a better, faster, and easier way to schedule your social media marketing? Do you feel automated social post scheduling negatively affects your reach? Then it’s time to hear some surprising and encouraging results from the guy who knows all the ins and outs. Don’t stop scheduling, reposting, and automating until you hear all about it. In today’s episode, we’ll cover: Should your agency repost your content marketing? 3 tests on the big 3: Facebook, Twitter and LinkedIn. Does automating your posts hurt your agency’s reach? Today I chatted with Emeric Ernoult, Co-founder and CEO of Agorapulse, an international social media management software company, serving over 3500 clients around the world. With over 17 years experience working within communities and social media, as well as SAAS, Emeric brings interesting data and insight into how we should be managing our agency’s and/or clients social media accounts. Should Your Agency Repost Your Content Marketing? That is the question, and you’re going to hear arguments on both sides of the discussion. Some say reposting content makes sense and keeps a more recent engagement. Some say it is totally worthless and not the point of social media. So what’s the right answer? There isn’t one. But, that doesn’t mean there aren’t tests that can be done and data to be had, so that’s what Emeric and his team at Agorapulse did, they tested. 3 Tests On The Big 3 Social Media Platforms Facebook Test: Repeat a specific piece of content, 7 times across a 6-7 week period. Findings: The level of engagement on the posts in weeks 6 and 7, were the same as the posts in weeks 1, 2 and 3. Twitter Test: Analyze 3 months worth of data on a Twitter user, who has an extensive schedule of tweeting every 15 minutes and repeating those tweets, every 4 days. Findings: The average number of impressions, the average number for engagement and the average amount of link links were very steady, so much so, that if you look at the data over the span of a year, there was no decrease and the variations being minimal. LinkedIn Test: Take an insightful post, written by Emeric, and repeat the content at the exact same time every 5 days. Findings: The amount of engagement was small at first, but over the course of weeks, the numbers for engagement would spike. The post could go from 139 clicks on day 2, to 1995 clicks on day 5. This just reinforced that you never know when someone will bump into your agency’s post on LinkedIn. Do Third Party Posting Applications Hurt Your Agency’s Reach? After getting feedback from a group of social media managers, and having 80% of them confirm their fears of utilizing third party vendors for posting, it was time to run another test: Emeric decided to run a test through the Social Media Lab by Agorapulse, with the end result being that a third party management application does NOT affect reach. You can read about his findings here and here. Knowing that kind of information definitely helps put a mind at ease and allows you to start exploring a third party application, like Agorapulse, to help simplify your social media posting needs and so much more. Steve says: “For me, it’s concentrating on the customer being at the centre of your products and the centre of your business. You should start at the customer and work your way backwards. “It’s easy to get caught up on why you think your product is fantastic or your business is fantastic, but you can forget to concentrate on the benefits to the customer. “You need to create amazing customer experiences. And this doesn’t necessarily need to be anything major, or over-the-top, or have a big budget. “It just means customer experience, customer care and customer respect running through your entire organisation. And with that, it’s personalisation, but personalisation in that people understand the individuals behind the brands. “Because in this day and age, people buy the person as much as the brand. And simple things such as a thank you email from your CEO when a purchase is made can make a big difference. It’s just small subtle changes. What kind of efficiencies can a small business gain by using a social media dashboard? Isn’t it best just to focus all your efforts on the one social network and do a quality job there? Why do you focus on Facebook, Twitter and Instagram? What are the biggest opportunities on those networks at the moment? Is it still important to drive traffic back to your site and build your own email list? What’s the future for these social networks? How will they continue to evolve? N.B. I introduced Emeric saying that he was "crazy enough to compete with Hootsuite" - here's an interesting blog post that compares the various social media management tools, showing that AgoraPulse are doing very well indeed! [Tweet ""Ask: Are these things going to help us build the business we want to build? Is there any greater source of emotional debate and mis-information on the web today than Facebook reach? I recently had a little debate on this subject with a person who wrote a glowing article on the promise of Facebook reach -- despite what appears to be pretty bad news in this corner of the web. I challenged him -- Why write an article that seems to be so counter to the facts? "I'm tired of so much negativity about Facebook," he said. "I wanted spin the facts in a more positive way." With so much at stake and so much mythology out there, it is certainly difficult to know who to believe or what to believe any more .... and we certainly do not need to be "spinning the facts." Part of the reason for so much confusion is that the truth is hard to come by. The real numbers are hidden behind company administrative accounts. There are only a few companies in the world with access to enough of these Facebook pages to make a meaningful statement about the true nature of Facebook reach. The truth about Facebook reach One of these rare companies is AgoraPulse, and my friend Emeric Ernoult The company's founder) was kind enough to share his raw data with Tom Webster and I to dissect on our latest episode of The Marketing Companion podcast. We were able to dive into the numbers behind 8,000 Facebook pages over the past 12 months and we found some surprising facts: More than 70 percent of all companies across 104 industry designations had a decline in organic reach of 30 percent or more in the past year. I think it is accurate to say the decline in Facebook reach has been incredibly steep and rapid. While Facebook brand pages reach an average of 6 percent of their fans, there is wide variation by company and industry. The declines ranged as low as 1 percent to as high as 65 percent Only 6 percent of the industry categories have seen Facebook organic reach grow or remain steady in the past 12 months. There is definitely a "hierarchy of conversation" among brands that leads to higher Facebook reach. Certain types of companies are just more conversational, leading to better reach. For example, nearly 550 pages consistently still have organic reach of 40 percent or more. Media companies and sports-related brands top the list. This last point was especially interesting to Tom and I and one of the things we discussed on the podcast was the concept of using the data as a predictive model -- Could you guide a Facebook strategy based on a number that indicates potential engagement level?  Let's look at some of the numbers:   The decline in organic reach was steeper and more rapid than I expected. No wonder marketing strategies are in turmoil if organic reach has declined 30 percent or more for some companies in such a short period of time: What's the recipe for higher organic reach? AgoraPulse gets to see more Facebook success stories than almost any company out there. So what is the key to success? The company's founder Emeric Ernoult shared these tips: "As with everything in the online world, there's no one-size-fits-all recipe. But to help focus on some success themes, I've hand-picked four Facebook pages that are doing extremely well and enjoying an average post reach above 50 percent of their fan base. Let's learn from them." Animals Australia OK, granted, this non-profit is about protecting animals and people love visuals of animals (and love their pets!). But they don't only post good looking puppies, they also post a lot of very interesting content relating to their cause. You're in the animals business? Facebook will make you happy. The Daily Muse Career advice? Yes, the Muse is a real business with a real business model (selling job postings to employers) but they also have so much content (very helpful and insightful content!) that their fans are engaged way above average. Super Chevy Mag Car lovers love to share their passion. And they usually love to read magazines that focus on that passion. Having a Facebook page for such a magazine cannot be a bad idea. Maxxess Maxxess is a French e-commerce site selling motorbike accessories. There is no doubt that motorbike owners are very passionate about their bike and the biking lifestyle. If you sell stuff to people who have a passion, Facebook is a must.Episode 31 What do these 4 pages have in common: They target an audience with a strong passion They publish very good content (at least, very good for their target audience) They publish very consistently (at least once a day, often more) They get a LOT of shares (thanks to the 3 points above), and shares are what offers the highest level of "viral" visibility for a page's content. I'm sure you'll agree this is pretty interesting stuff but to get the inside scoop, you'll want to check out our new podcast, which also covers a hilarious new social media app called "Get a Room!"
