How do you lead a company of more than 900 employees through a pandemic? By taking a back seat... sort of. When Australia's largest convention facility, the Melbourne Convention and Exhibition Centre, was asked to prepare to be a Covid hospital and morgue, it was presented with the darkest vision anyone could imagine for its space. But almost a year later, the MCEC is thriving with ideas that have come from the ground up, thanks to the leadership of its CEO Peter King. Guiding the center through an unprecedented hackathon to re-imagine its 70,000 square meter space, MCEC is bringing Hollywood movies and digital art galleries into its previously conference-focused spaces.  Quotes From Episode"We did a huge amount of work in a short space of time to potentially become a 600 bed ICU hospital. Virtually within 24 hours of making that decision, the numbers just flattened a little bit ... and luckily (the government) decided to not go ahead with that and we haven't needed it. But the things we've had to contemplate you could never have dreamt of.""I look back at this number of times and people deal with it differently. We were all on this difficult journey and even within my executive team at any one time I had people who were really struggling. At the same time, other people were just enthralled by the challenge and that would change again in another month or two." "I think there is probably a percentage of our industry sitting there going, "God, I just want to get back to business as usual". But I just don't think business as usual is an option anymore and that's why we've chosen to go along a different pathway."-Peter KingDon't miss:- The jobs that gave Peter King an outsider's view of the events industry- Deep-diving with staff for unconventional ideas- New partnerships that open doors for kitchen staff- Moving from preparing to be a Covid morgue to a Hollywood movie set- Leading your people through the mental journey of life and businessRecommendations:Rocky IV movieConnect with Peter King:Email: pking@mcec.com.auConnect with Upon Arrival:Email: uponarrivalpodcast@gmail.com

With such an enormous body of work, it was hard to know where to start preparing for this interview, but I spent our 45 minutes together trying to shine a light on apparently conflicting beliefs. How do we strive for more, while also accepting who we are? Does having a Plan B mean that we don’t go all in on Plan A? Does hiring for culture fit mean that we destroy creativity? We explored questions like these that transcend both life and business, so strap yourself in for some rapid-fire learning with the one, the only, Seth Godin. Topics Discussed: Striving for more versus acceptance of self Having a Plan B versus going all in on Plan A Navigating uncertainty Overcoming rejection and adversity Build an MVP or build something remarkable? How to identify your smallest viable market How to save time for rewarding pursuits Persist or quit in the face of negative feedback? Hire for culture fit or diversity of thought? Ash Blackwell joins Nick Wallis on the program live from the Hemp Health and Innovation Expo 2018 at the Melbourne Convention and Exhibition Centre, chatting with Max Stone and Myz Guidance from the Nimbin Hemp Embassy.INTERVIEWS:PART 2: Erik Lamir-Pike, director of the Bohemian Beatfreaks festival and Rabbits Eat Lettuce festival in NSW joins the program to talk about the dramatic and unprecedented rise in user-pays policing fee put on them just weeks out from their festival, leading to a last minute location change across the NSW border into Queensland. PART 1: Counter culture author and co-founder of the Australian Sex Party (now Reason Party) Robbie Swan talks about his experience with early counter-culture festivals like the Aquarius Festival and the Sunbury Music festival. Robbie shares stories of early police crackdowns, including a recollection of an under-reported incident, demonstrating a long-held cultural friction between progressive and conservative culture in Australia "During an afternoon performance, members of the audience were attacked -- apparently without provocation -- by police in full riot gear, and more than 150 arrests were made. Many students barricaded themselves into the Union building. The next day they marched on Civic police station to protest the arrests, but the marchers were again set upon by police, who were accompanied by a group of 'bikers' who, Davies alleges, were colluding with the police to provoke violent incidents, resulting in more arrests." - AQUARIUS FESTIVAL OF UNIVERSITY ARTS at Milesago.com
