I believe this is the most important podcast episode ever done in history! Big words for sure...now let me back them up Dr. Caldwell Esselstyn is a world renowned cardiologist who was a surgeon at the famed Cleveland Clinic, the top Heart Hospital in the world. He is the author of the best selling book Prevent & Reverse Heart Disease and was also prominently featured in the groundbreaking documentary Forks Over Knives. His pioneering work with Coronary Artery Disease has saved countless lives. We explore: Who has heart disease? What percentage of people? Why in his 9th decade of life does Dr. Esselstyn continue to talk about eradicating or slowing the progression of heart disease. What's is the mission that's still driving him. When he speaks of Preventing and Reversing Heart Disease is he primarily speaking about Coronary Artery Disease or all Heart Disease? The internet is filled with Drs & others promoting Keto and low Carb Diets and they swear by their research. How do we explain the claimed successes of those diets...or are they really successful? Why are ALL oils bad, especially for those with coronary artery disease? Are there any oils that are good for those that don't have heart disease? Should everyone have a Calcium Score and when should they be alarmed? How important is it to lower LDL and raise HDL? What does he think of Statins? Why should there never be a reason to develop heart disease. At what point should someone have an angiogram and stents placed or bypass surgery? How does someone track their progress after a positive stress test and starting a Whole Food plant -based diet Why a Whole Food Plant Based Diet is Different than a Vegan diet Why do leafy greens eaten 6x a day help to mitigate or reverse further coronary artery disease? Which are the best greens to eat? Which are the next best foods after greens? How about Nightshades? Good or Bad? Can this diet prevent event the most serious heart blockages and circumvent even a quadruple bypass? How much fat is recommended for those with coronary artery disease and how much of that in saturated fat? Is all saturated fat equal? What three Whole Foods are bad for Coronary Artery Disease patients? How about sweeteners?

Dr. Shenkman says a plant-based diet, plenty of exercise, and a whole-hearted approach to living make up the best prescription of all. And in The Vegan Heart Doctor s Guide to Reversing Heart Disease, Losing Weight, and Reclaiming Your Life, she lays out a simple, manageable protocol for transitioning to a vegan diet and safely leaving your former, sedentary self in the dust. Yet Dr. Shenkman doesn t just talk the talk; she walks the walk. Interspersed throughout the book s advice, she tells her own remarkable story of how as an adult she became an impressive endurance athlete fueled entirely by a plant-based diet. In an age when healthy living is no longer optional, Dr. Shenkman s message could not be more timely or inspiring. When you read this book, you ll realize heart disease does not mean your life is over. In fact, you can let your diagnosis motivate you to make the needed changes that free you up to finally fully live. Dr Shenkman is a interventional cardiologist in practice in Tarzana, California. AL SCHMIDT IS ENJOYING LIFE AT 88!!! AL'S YOUTUBE CHANNEL: https://www.youtube.com/@UCqQWuVxkkL-XAKFQmMYazCQ At the age of 80, six years ago, I was practically a full-time cardiac patient, on death's door. I had already suffered decades of cardiac events: three heart attacks, five-vessel bypass surgery, and the implantation of three stents. Due to my severe angina, I could not climb stairs, and could not walk to my neighbor's house without severe and frightening chest pains. I could not take the trash out. I installed in my house as I could not climb stairs. My existence was limited to sitting in front of the computer or the TV—and I hate TV. I had become depressed. I kept a daily diary of my medical events, and the most overused word in the diary was “pain.” I knew that he had reached End Stage Heart Failure. In my diary, he made a note to look into receiving End of Life Counseling. “Grasping at straws,” I signed up for a cardiac rehab program at Kaiser. I could barely walk to the meeting room. A dietitian made a presentation advocating the plant-based diet. I had nothing to lose, so I decided to try it. They advised me to read three books: Prevent and Reverse Heart Disease, by Caldwell B. Esselstyn, MD, How Not to Die, by Michael Greger, MD, and The China Study, by T. Colin Campbell, PhD, and Thomas M. Campbell II, MD. I read all three books and they changed my life, or rather saved it. After four weeks on a whole food, plant-based diet, I went to Lake Tahoe and walked for over a mile, at an elevation of 6,000 feet. I then climbed two flights of stairs to return to my car, without effort. Once back home, I began to resume my long-forsaken habit of walking over a mile and a half. My serum cholesterol fell from 250 to 149 in two months. It is now 115. In the same time, he lost 30 pounds, going from 180 to 150. (He's 5'11”.) Again after 6 years it is now 135. My kidney function went from 40% to normal. The dark blue skin on my ankles, caused by the pooling of blood under the skin due to chronic venous insufficiency (the blood failing to flow upward as it should) disappeared in less than a year. His angina pains went away. So did the dizziness, weakness, disorientation, and recurrent falling. After all of these improvements, I returned to see his cardiologist. In fact, instead of taking the elevator, I walked up four flights of stairs to see her. When she saw how improved I was, she asked if he would be willing to share his story, and arranged for me to speak before 100 medical professionals! Today, I am enjoying life, enjoying food, and feel full of energy. I am never tempted to stray back to the way I used to eat. Why would I? I had no energy, could not do anything, and was afraid of dying.
