This episode contains more audio from the trial of Sandy Murphy and Rick Tavish for the murder of Ted Binion. Binion was a wealthy American gambling executive and one of the sons of Vegas casino magnate Benny Binion, owner of the Horseshoe Casino. Ted, a multi-millionaire, loved the high life and ran the Horseshoe for a while, hosting the casino's poker tournaments. But in 1998, Ted, 55, was having problems. Due to his heroin addiction and associations with known criminals, he'd recently lost his gaming license and his ties to the casino. His wife Doris had moved out, taking the couple's daughter, Bonnie, after learning of Ted's affair with a topless dancer named Sandra Murphy. Just before his death, he discovered that Sandra was cheating on him with a man named Rick Tabish. On September 17, 1998, Ted was found dead from a combination of Xanax, heroin, and Valium. He'd recently bought 12 pieces of tar heroin from a street drug dealer, and had a Xanax prescription from his next-door neighbor, a doctor. Police believed the scene was staged by Sandra Murphy and Rick Tabish, who wanted Ted's money (after losing his gaming license, Ted had taken all his gold out of the Horseshoe safe and buried it in a 12 foot deep underground vault in Pahrump, Nevada). In 1999, Sandra and Rick were found guilty of murder, but the verdict was overturned. After a second trial, they were acquitted of the murder, but found guilty of conspiring to commit and committing burglary and/or grand larceny. Rick served 11 years; Sandy was sentenced to time served. This episode contains testimony from the second trial, in May 2005, featuring two of Sandy's gossipy beauticians, hairdresser Georgia Gastone and Michelle Gillian.

She speaks to the fact that she went days with no food. Her mom had nine children with no stable income. She knew that if her mom had a decent job, life would have been easier for all of them. After graduating with her certificate in cosmetology because someone sponsored her, Tinah decided that she needed to give back. She Unit Uganda was born to provide skills to women, so that they could create a stable income for their families. She Unit Uganda reaches out to young women, 15-30 years of age who did not get a chance to go to school or have dropped out of school and are living in absolute poverty. The organization provides all training for free. The students are trained in hairdressing, makeup artistry, pedicure and manicure. Beauticians can easily find work in Uganda if they are properly trained. These students are also provided training in the making of liquid soap, shampoo and conditioner through outreach programs and the beneficiaries are able to engage in entrepreneurship by selling the products they make.In a period of three years, She Unit Uganda has reached out to more than 300 young women. The ubiquitous foot-soldiers of India's thriving internet economy are discontented. We're talking about your Ola/ Uber cab drivers and Swiggy/ Zomato delivery partners. Some of them are now tasked with delivering your bread and milk in just 10 minutes! But as a recent report by the Fairwork Foundation, in collaboration with the Oxford Internet Institute has found the earnings of these app-based platform workers or gig workers in India have declined over the last two years. That's owing to the withering of incentives offered by companies and a reduction in take-home earnings due to a surge in out-of-pocket expenses. The Fairwork India Ratings 2021: Labour Standards in the Platform Economy, now in its third year of publication, serves as an indictment of the work conditions for this growing class of unorganised workers. This year, the report ranks 11 Indian startups which engage contract gig workers. It scores them out of 10, based on their performance against five principles, namely: Fair Pay, Fair Conditions, Fair Contracts, Fair Management and Fair Representation. Notably, Ola's score has come down from 2/10 in 2020 to zero in 2021. This is, at a time, when it has become notoriously difficult to get a cab driver to accept your ride request on Ola platform. Uber has also slipped from one to zero. And Urban Company, which topped the list in 2020 with a stellar score of 8/10, has slipped three-points to five. We reached out to Ola, Uber and Urban Company to understand the reasons behind the fall in their scores, but didn't receive any responses. So, we asked the lead investigator for Fairwork in India, Professor Balaji Parthasarathy. The decline in Urban Company's score has coincided with ongoing protests by its beauticians. The first protest was in October last year, as beauticians complained against Urban Company's commissions of up to 30%-35% per job. Urban Company responded with some concessions, one of them being reducing its highest commission for beauty service professionals to 25% from 30%. However, last month, Urban Company's beauticians again held a protest outside the company's Gurugram office. Their complain was about new work policies, which would have beauticians pay a subscription fee upfront to get ‘gigs' through Urban Company's portal. Beauticians would also have to take a minimum number of jobs each month, thus reducing their gig work flexibility. This time, Urban Company responded to the protest by suing the protesting beauticians. This remains the first such instance of an Indian gig company suing its own workers. At the heart of the growing discontent with gig work is the fact that this new model of work hasn't lived up to its core promises. Startups in the ride-hailing and food delivery sectors attracted their first bunch of gig workers with the promises of good pay and work flexibility. By paying these workers per task or ‘gig', companies did away with the burden of having to provide them with social security and other standard employee benefits. However, wages have reduced over time, and gig work has become a permanent gig for Ola/Uber cab drivers and Swiggy/ Zomato delivery partners. Several testimonies in the Fairwork reports over the last three years highlight how most workers have to work 12-16 hours to make ends meet. And yet, they enjoy little in terms of social security that any employee would get. A PIL in the Supreme Court by the Indian Federation of App-Based Transport Workers (IFAT) seeks the classification of gig and platform workers as ‘unorganised workers' under the Unorganised Workers Act, 2008. This would entitle them to benefits such as provident fund, health and maternity benefits and old age protection. This, even as the Centre has come up with the Code on Social Security which recognises gig and platform workers. A counter-view to the criticism of gig work conditions in the Indian platform economy, is t

Barber shops and beauty salons aren't just small businesses in the black community; they are metaphorical street corners or town plazas. Customers visit both to get their hairstyled or cut but also for the therapeutic experience: They chat with the stylist behind the chair about what's going on in their lives, they hear about other regular customers — and they may even catch up on a little gossip. Sadly, many of these shops around the country are closed due to the coronavirus pandemic and has meant shutting off the connection that leads to the heart of the black community.Today we talk about the importance of the barbershops & hair salons in the black community. These shops have been in our communities since the beginning of time & if we don't protect them they will fade away & just be a thing of the past. Join in as we take a trip down memory lane with our first trips to the barbershop and even some of the bad experiences we've had at a barbershop. Lastly, 52 gives his 10 rules for going to a black barbershop at the 52minute mark. So no matter if you've been in a shop for 20 years, 20 months or 20 mins we want to make sure we protect you at all cost!!!Don't Forget to Follow Us Online:Facebook & Youtube: Black 2 the Basics PodcastInstagram & Twitter: @B2B_PodcastFor all booking inquires email: black2thebasicspodcast@gmail.com

Frustration and Anxiety, these two emotions have been a mainstay among small business owners who have been severely impacted by COVID-19. The emergency declaration on March 13th set off a chain reaction among America's small business owners. Now, more than two months removed from the declaration, many businesses are still treading in extremely rough waters. While some businesses were running to the bank with their PPP application (i.e. Paycheck Protection Program), there were other small business owners who lacked the information to take advantage of the relief assistance available in The Cares Act. It's time to do something about that! Let's Talk Money! Calling all Minority Small Business Owners, Barbers, Beauticians, Independent Contractors, Realtors, Side Hustlers, Entertainment contractor etc and every Self Employed individual I left out. So you've been told you don't qualify for the Paycheck Protection Plan. Well guess what, that might not be true! Listen to accountant Kenya M Sykes break it down for you and explain how you might be eligible. Get a piece the 100 Billion dollars that's out there for you! Yes you. On this episode Kenya Skyes breaks down how you can get a piece of the American Pie but don't wait to long you only have until June 30th. Featured Guest: Kenya M. Sykes, CPA MSFS MT Kenya has 25 years of experience working with individuals, trusts and estates, and closely-held businesses in the areas of taxation and accounting. A Certified Public Accountant (CPA), Kenya earned her B.S. in Accounting at Florida Agricultural & Mechanical University (FAMU) in 1995, and spent years honing her craft in auditing and accounting as an alumnus of the former Arthur Andersen LLP. After returning to school and earning her M.S. in Financial Services from Saint Joseph's University (SJU) and her M.T. in Taxation from Villanova University School of Law, Kenya expanded beyond accounting to serve as the premiere tax advisor to small business clients in over 20 industries. https://kmsykescpa.com info@kmsykescpa.com Phone: (866) 661-6008 Resources: https://www.sba.gov/funding-programs/loans/coronavirus-relief-options/paycheck-protection-program Send your questions or comments to SweetTalkLive@gmail.com or hit us up on FB or Twitter @SweetTalkLane. This may not be something you think about when heading to a salon or our Stylist for service but you should. Did you know that unsterilized tools can lead to staph and fungal infections like ringworm? Styling tools and surfaces should be cleaned and disinfected between clients to eliminate the chance of passing on harmful germs and bacteria from one client to another. Kristin will share what she does to help abuse victims and how she started it and what you can do with your business to help those who are being abused.
I witness barbers turn down $50-$60 an hour regularly. Breaks my heart. The shop is a social place, but its a business first. If people aren't making money, then there's ultimately no shop to go to. Too many barbers forget that they're in the *service* business and make their customers feel like its a privilege to be in their chair. They may not say it, but they show it by behaviors that don't express appreciation. And if you're trying to build your business, your actions should match it -- use the tools you have to get butts in your chair instead of wasting precious time liking pics on IG. I'm really good at cutting my own hair, so hate me if you want for this rant. I just hope this video helps you grow your client roster and build a reputation for valuing peoples time AND for giving dope fades. #Barbers #Business #Entrepreneurship

During the Golden Age of television, one hair color commercial begged the question: “Does she or doesn't she….only her hairdresser knows for sure.” Dr Connie wonders if beauticians and stylists hear more secrets from their clients than physicians do from their own patients. Join us in studio as Dr. Connie interviews two members of her personal beauty team: hairstylist and master colorist, Alfonso Gonzales, and nail technician, Sandy Conklin, of Par Exsalonce Salon in Scottsdale, AZ. We'll learn about their careers in the beauty industry, secrets they have heard from clients, and secrets they are willing to share about staying beautiful.
I’m a hairdresser/beautician/massage therapist, so I’m not a retailer This was the conversation I has with my beautician recently So I pointed to the shelves full of products, and asked if she sold them. Of course she did. Well, they were for sale, but she didn’t really sell them. She didn’t want to be pushy. She’s once worked for a beauty chain, where everything was about targets and upsells, and she vowed never to be like that to her customers.
