Ep 508 - Generously Giving Guest: Megan Owen-Evans   By Stuart McNish   In the book “Why Good Things Happen to Good People,” Stephen Post writes that “giving to others” has been shown to increase health benefits. A separate study by Michael Norton from Harvard Business School revealed that “people are happier when they spend money on others versus themselves.” Megan Owen-Evans went far beyond the giving of money – she donated a kidney and part of her liver to two different anonymous recipients.     “Donating a kidney or a part of your liver is an enormous undertaking,” says Owen-Evans. “Not only do you need to take time for the surgery and recovery, [but] you also undergo a plethora of tests that consume vast amounts of time” – time that takes the donor away from work and family. “The cost in lost salary is significant.”   Fully aware of the impact on donors, Owen-Evans set out to change the financial impact on these generous souls who give of themselves. As President of Neptune Terminals, Owen-Evans established a new policy: “paid time off for donors.” It's a concept that is gaining support from other major employers in British Columbia, such as Beedie Development and the David Foster Foundation.    We invited Megan Owen-Evans to join us for a Conversation That Matters about corporate giving that supports employees and offers the gift of life to people in desperate need.   You can see the interview here https://www.conversationsthatmatter.ca/   Learn More about our guests career at careersthatmatter.ca

'Tis the season of giving and many people will be donating to charities this year, but it can be confusing to navigate who to give to and how. In this episode of Edelman Financial Engines' Everyday Wealth™, Jean and wealth planner Andy Smith explore different giving vehicles, like donor-advised funds and qualified charitable deductions. They'll discuss how a planner can help you develop a giving strategy that could not only lower your tax liabilities, but make a big difference for those in need. Then, Jean speaks with Dr. Stephen Post, professor of family, population and preventive medicine and founding director of the Center for Medical Humanities, Compassionate Care and Bioethics at Stony Brook University, about why giving is so good for us. His bestselling books include The Hidden Gifts of Helping and Why Good Things Happen to Good People.   Ms. Chatzky receives cash compensation for acting as host of the Everyday Wealth podcast and for related activities and therefore has an incentive to endorse Edelman Financial Engines and its planners. We typically choose to be giving because we want to help others. But you are, in fact, the real benefactor of your generosity. As you give, you also receive. When you are generous, loving, and kind you are the one who receives the gifts of your loving, kind, and generous heart.  In this episode Matt interviews Dr. Stephen Post, whose books have received acclaim from His Holiness the Dalai Lama and Deepak Chopra. Stephen and Matt talk about his book on giving called When Good Things Happen to Good People, a book that emphasizes the positive impact of acts of kindness and generosity on one's own well-being. Here are some power takeaways from today's conversation:  Why giving is good for us Goodness in the heart of a child How we can apply compassion and kindness to our everyday life The importance of winning with love Considering your adversaries as your friends [02:24] The Value of Giving In the realm of giving, it's not enough to simply perform an action. Scientific evidence has shown that the level of empathy and care infused into the act is paramount. It's not about the quantity of the donation, but rather the quality of compassion and kindness put into it. This approach yields numerous benefits for all individuals, regardless of age or background. It's particularly advantageous for those experiencing certain medical conditions. As such, it's crucial to remain mindful of this principle and impart its value to younger generations. [07:37] Goodness in the Heart of a Child Children possess a pure and innate goodness, but often this quality is overshadowed by external factors. To cultivate this trait within families, it's important to establish a support system that includes positive role models and clear family values. Encouragement and opportunities for volunteering can also be instrumental in fostering altruistic behavior from adolescence throughout the entire lifespan. Despite common negative cultural beliefs that humans are inherently selfish, recent scientific research has shown that kindness and love have numerous benefits. Scientists are now dedicating their work towards exploring the many forms of love, which is producing promising results. [21:43] The Importance of Winning with Love Life presents us with many obstacles, and our responsibility is to continue growing as individuals. It's crucial to persevere with love despite any difficulties that may arise and resist the temptation of getting caught up in negativity. Although this can be challenging, it's important to approach life with a love-filled attitude and not let external factors bring us down. While suffering may be present, it's often linked to our attachment to certain things or circumstances. Notable quotes: [02:37] It's not how much you give, but how much kindness you put into the giving that matters. [02:42]  [07:37] There's a lot of goodness in the heart of a child. The problem is that we push the wrong buttons. [07:43] [21:50] Our job is to stick with love, if we can, no matter what, and not allow ourselves to get sucked down into this negative, seething boiling cauldron, which is easy to do. Ep 454 - The Power of Giving Guest: John Bromley By Stuart McNish   In the book “Why Good Things Happen to Good People,” Stephen Post writes that “giving to others” has been shown to increase health benefits. A separate study by Michael Norton from Harvard Business School revealed that “people are happier when they spend money on others versus themselves.”    These are all wonderful reasons to give. As Martin McNish stated in “Give a Damn” (a Conversations That Matter episode), “giving proves that you can make a difference in the lives of others and to not give is to give up on the belief that you can make a difference.” Give a Damn is a small crowdfunding not-for-profit that raises money for micro-charities that do not have the resources to fundraise.   Here's the challenge, says McNish. “We too are small and only have limited resources, all of which are dedicated to raising awareness and money for other charities.” Enter Charitable Impact, a Vancouver-based foundation that was created to help donors and charities connect. John Bromley says, “It started with the goal of making it easier for people to come together to change the world.”   We invited John Bromley of Charitable Impact to join us for a Conversation That Matters about the power of giving.   Learn More about our guests career at careersthatmatter.ca   Join me June 20 for Conversations Live - A Vancouver Sun Town Hall https://www.conversationslive.ca/

How do we approach a "deeply forgetful" loved one so as to notice and affirm their continuing self-identity? For three decades, Stephen G. Post has worked around the world encouraging caregivers to become more aware of—and find renewed hope in—surprising expressions of selfhood despite the challenges of cognitive decline. In Dignity for Deeply Forgetful People Post offers new perspectives on the worth and dignity of people with Alzheimer's and related disorders despite the negative influence of "hypercognitive" values that place an ethically unacceptable emphasis on human dignity as based on linear rationality and strength of memory. He reveals who they still are underneath the losses and explores the many ways to stimulate and connect with that continuing self. At a time when recent drugs to cure or slow Alzheimer's are showing little effectiveness, Post argues that focusing discussion and resources on the relational dignity of these individuals and the respite needs of their caregivers is vital. Grounding an ethics of care on the equal worth of all conscious human beings, he provides a cautionary perspective on preemptive assisted suicide based on cases that he has witnessed. He covers 16 practical issues from diagnosis to hospice care based on 30 years of interacting with caregivers in the US and Canada and advocates social and economic justice in an American system where caregivers and their loved ones receive only leftover scraps. Racially inclusive and grounded in diversity, Dignity for Deeply Forgetful People includes a workshop appendix focused on communication and connection, "A Caregiver Resilience Program," designed by Rev. Dr. Jade C. Angelica to enhance the quality of life for deeply forgetful people, reduce stress and increase confidence for caregivers, and inspire a hopeful attitude for all.

When the happiness, security, and well-being of another feels as meaningful and real to us as our own, or perhaps more so, we love that person. Unlimited Love includes but extends beyond our nearest and dearest to all humanity based on our shared dignity and interdependence with one another and with nature. For those of us who are secular, this ideal can be rationally defended. For those who are spiritually or religiously inclined, Unlimited Love is deemed to be a Creative Presence or Ultimate Reality underlying the universe, the participation in which leads to inner peace and expanded benevolence. Whether we define ourselves as secular, religious, or spiritual, we can generally agree that such love constitutes the greatest imaginable leap forward in human consciousness and behavior.

For caregivers of deeply forgetful people: a book that combines new ethics guidelines with an innovative program on how to communicate and connect with people with Alzheimer's. How do we approach a "deeply forgetful" loved one so as to notice and affirm their continuing self-identity? For three decades, Stephen G. Post has worked around the world encouraging caregivers to become more aware of―and find renewed hope in―surprising expressions of selfhood despite the challenges of cognitive decline. In this book, Post offers new perspectives on the worth and dignity of people with Alzheimer's and related disorders despite the negative influence of "hypercognitive" values that place an ethically unacceptable emphasis on human dignity as based on linear rationality and strength of memory. This bias, Post argues, is responsible for the abusive exclusion of this population from our shared humanity. With vignettes and narratives, he argues for a deeper dignity grounded in consciousness, emotional presence, creativity, interdependence, music, and a self that is not "gone" but "differently abled." He affirms vulnerability and interdependence as the core of the human condition and celebrates caregivers as advocates seeking social and economic justice in an unjust American system.  This interview was recorded in 2022. https://www.stephengpost.com https://unlimitedloveinstitute.org Hosted by Dr. Zohara Hieronimus.  Produced by Hieronimus & Co. for 21st Century Radio®.  Edited version provided to Nightlight Radio with permission.

Truly a story for the ages, God and Love on Route 80 touches on the essential meaning of life and the messages we may all miss unless we begin paying close attention.Readers inspired by modern classics such as Love Warrior by Glennon Doyle, Peace Like a River, Becoming Supernatural, or When God Winks at You, will love God and Love on Route 80. “Sometimes things happen that reveal an apparent pattern, plan, and meaning to the workings of the world. When this revelation occurs, it's as if the Universe winks at us to say, ‘now you're in on the secret!' The ‘secret' is the realization that an infinite, unitary intelligence pervades everything--what author Stephen G Post calls infinite Mind…and that love is a kind of metaphysical glue that holds things together and provides a delightful fizz to the whole show.” writes Dr. Larry Dossey, MD. My guest helps us understand the importance of synchronicity in our lives and how to recognize it; the importance of love, kindness, and generosity; and the hidden mystery of human connectedness. He prescribes volunteering for health, happiness, resilience, and longevity based on research showing volunteering lowers levels of inflammation, cholesterol, and the body mass index, and helps those with mental health issues such as depression and schizophrenia. Please join us Thursday to explore Stephen Post's deep understanding of spirituality and how love drives out fear and heals us and the world.

If Santa Fe held an election to decide the city's official meme, “I rebuilt the Palace of the Governors at my own expense” would surely garner a hefty number of votes. Various governors––Spanish, Mexican, and American––over the last 400 years have uttered versions of that phrase, highlighting their individual efforts to remodel and repair the oldest public building in Santa Fe.  Governor grandstanding aside, visitors expecting a gilded European-style building are often let down when they encounter the single-story adobe structure for the first time. But as host Charlotte Jusinski learns, the iconic landmark houses an archival treasure trove both above and below ground. She's joined by Cordelia Snow and Stephen Post, the guest curators of The Palace Seen and Unseen: A Convergence of History and Archaeology, the new long-term exhibit at the New Mexico History Museum. The trio digs into four centuries of Palace history, exploring stories revealed in excavated artifacts and anticipating mysteries not yet uncovered.  “Depending on whom you ask, the Palace of the Governors is perhaps one of the most important, if not the most important, building in New Mexico in a lot of ways.” Cordelia, or Dedie as she's known, doesn't make that claim lightly. From that day in 1974, when she first set foot inside, Dedie immediately fell in love with the Palace and down its archeological rabbit hole. “It was, for a historic archaeologist, an absolute dream of a place to work,” she says, adding, “I had no more idea of what was going on where the archaeology was like Alice in Wonderland.” While Dedie concentrated on the history hidden beneath the Palace floorboards, Stephen focused on the possibilities buried outside its walls. He began his career at the Palace in 1978, carefully sifting through the fine, sandy soil in search of historic bits and pieces. A lot has changed over the last 40 years, and Stephen's hopeful that modern techniques will positively impact archaeology's future. “I think in the future, we'll do a better job of being more careful about how the buried deposits and the remains left by past peoples will be treated,” he says, “so that we don't unnecessarily disturb aspects of the past that could be there, should really be there, for another 400 years.” The Palace Seen and Unseen is an intentionally titled exhibit. It reminds us that this historic site continuously reveals itself to us, inviting present-day visitors to connect with those from 400 years ago in the same magnificent space.    The Palace Seen and Unseen: A Convergence of History and Archaeology is at the New Mexico History Museum through June 19, 2026.   Visit http://newmexicoculture.org for info about our museums, historic sites, virtual tours and more. *** Encounter Culture, a production of the New Mexico Department of Cultural Affairs, is produced and edited by Andrea Klunder at The Creative Impostor Studios. What We Discuss in this Episode: In 1970, the person who works the hardest wins. But it’s 2020. Effort and “being busy” no longer equals achievement. Production toward what matters most equals achievement. You must prioritize and plan your week in advance. Can you put your phone away, or does it control your life? Addiction to anything negatively impacts your quality of life. Take your social media apps off your home screen. Don’t take your phone with you everywhere – or, take a small step by turning on airplane mode every once and a while. Get intentional about practicing gratitude. “Gratitude unlocks the fullness of life. It turns what we have into enough, and more. It turns denial into acceptance, chaos to order, confusion to clarity. It can turn a meal into a feast, a house into a home, a stranger into a friend.” – Melody Beattie “You’re the average of the five people you spend the most time with.” – Jim Rohn “Life is only about relationships.” – Dr. Greg Sipes However, not every relationship in your life is equally important. Who are the top ten most important people in your life? Seriously. Write down their names. Having hobbies allows you to spend time doing things that are not related to work. Further, it opens you up to sharing time with other people, who might have different backgrounds and perspectives from yours. When you feel connected to others and to a higher purpose, you experience more peace and contentment. Give a community of faithful people a chance. Build some quiet and meditation into your life. Spiritual Interventions in Patient Care

About 25 years ago, while sharing an early morning cup of coffee with my dear friend and practice partner, family physician John Hartman, MD, he asked, “Walt, how come we don’t bring our faith to work with us more often?” It was a question the Lord used to convict me of the fact that although my personal relationship with God was the primary and most important relationship in my life, more often than not I tended to leave Him at the door when entering the hospital or medical office. The question was the catalyst for this talk: Spiritual Interventions in Patient Care. Research findings, a desire to provide high-quality care, and simple common sense, all underscore the need to integrate spirituality into patient care. It is highly ethical for healthcare professionals and healthcare systems to assess their patients’ spiritual health and needs and to provide indicated and desired spiritual interventions. Clinicians and health care systems should not deprive their patients of the spiritual support and comfort on which their hope, health, wellbeing, and longevity may hinge. Before you get started, I must share this caution from Stephen Post, PhD: “Professional problems can occur when well-meaning healthcare professionals ‘faith-push’ a patient opposed to discussing religion.” However, on the other side of the coin, “rather than ignoring faith completely with all patients, most of whom want to discuss it, we can explore which of our patients are interested and who are not.” Simply put, a spiritual assessment can help us do this with each patient we see. We can potentially gain the following from a spiritual assessment: The patient’s religious background, The role that religious or spiritual beliefs or practices play in coping with illness (or causing distress), Beliefs that may influence or conflict with decisions about medical care,  The patient’s level of participation in a spiritual community and whether the community is supportive, and ‹ Any spiritual needs that might be present. Several fairly-easy-to-use mnemonics have been designed to help health professionals, such as the “GOD” spiritual assessment I developed for CMDA’s Saline Solution: G = God: − May I ask your faith background? Do you have a spiritual or faith preference? Is God, spirituality, religion or spiritual faith important to you now, or has it been in the past? O = Others: − Do you now meet with others in religious or spiritual community, or have you in the past? If so, how often? How do you integrate with your faith community? D = Do: − What can I do to assist you in incorporating your spiritual or religious faith into your medical care? Or, is there anything I can do to encourage your faith? May I pray with or for you? However, this and other spiritual assessment tools fail to inquire about a critical item involving spiritual health: any religious struggles the patient may be having. A robust literature shows religious struggles can predict mortality, as there is an inverse association between faith and morbidity and mortality of various types. Sir William Osler, one of the founding professors of Johns Hopkins Hospital and frequently described as the “Father of Modern Medicine,” wrote, “Nothing in life is more wonderful than faith…the one great moving force which we can neither weigh in the balance nor test in the crucibIe - mysterious, indefinable, known only by its effects, faith pours out an unfailing stream of energy while abating neither jot nor tittle of its potence.” You can experience that driving force of faith when you apply these principles of spiritual assessment in your practice of healthcare, thereby allowing you to minister to your patients in ways you never imagined possible, while also increasing personal and professional satisfaction. One doctor recently shared with me, “Ministering in my practice has allowed God to bear fruit in and through me in new and wonderful ways. I can’t wait to see what He’s going to do in and through me each day. My practice and I have been transformed.”

“Do We Plan Our Life or Does Destiny Control Us?” – My Interview With Dr. Stephen G. Post

I am really excited today to bring you the thinking of New York Times best-selling author Dr. Stephen Post, on issues that have driven his career. Stephen and I will be discussing a range of topics, such as whether we need to suffer to really heal, whether we plan our life or destiny controls it, and the difference between human and divine love. His long career as a researcher, public speaker and professor has given him deep insights into these topics that you will want to hear and consider. I am particularly impressed with how consistently Stephen eschews easy answers to inherently complex questions. The following is just a taste of Stephen’s remarkable insights. Q: Do we plan our life, or is it controlled by destiny? Stephen: We are co-creators of our destiny if we live with openness and responsiveness to surprises. Q: Must all of us suffer and become broken in order to truly heal? Stephen: Some people who lack empathy and love are lucky to come to some kind of brokenness so their light can begin to shine through; others are naturally empathetic and do not need that. Q: What’s the difference between human and divine love? Stephen: Human love, no matter how deep, is limited and can turn into anger or hatred; sometimes, if we’re open, we’re invaded by a spirit of (divine) love that is shockingly beyond our usual repertoire. Q: What’s the difference between the right and the wrong kind of oneness? Stephen: We all desire oneness, but we often seek to achieve it by eliminating those who are different; the right kind of oneness includes everyone as having equal eternal value. When asked if there’s one last thing he’d like our listeners to hear, Stephen quotes Eleanor Roosevelt as saying, “The future belongs to those who believe in the beauty of their dreams.” Dr. Stephen Post’s latest book, God and Love on Route 80: The Hidden Mystery of Human Connectedness, is a true story of the author's recurring dream as a teenager, and how he literally followed the dream west on Route 80 until he got to a ledge on the Golden Gate Bridge – actually, he’s been following the dream for the rest of his life. It’s a classic story about the hero being called on a spiritual journey. About Dr. Stephen G. Post For over twenty years, Stephen has been spreading the science of giving and the commitment to the greater good. He has promoted the idea of “give and live better” across the globe. Funding over 50 scientific studies at the nation’s top universities as well as conducting his own research, Stephen is considered the “go to” guy with his uplifting message that when we contribute to the lives of others, give meaningfully, and live by the Golden Rule, we are generally happier, healthier, more resilient, creative, hopeful and successful. What keeps them going, and what can the rest of us learn from these spiritual exemplars?” - Dr. Matthew T. Lee What We Discuss with Dr. Matthew T. More About Dr. Lee As an assistant professor researching the dark side of human nature, Matt made a comment to a colleague that he wished to teach a class on love, but because he wasn’t tenured he wasn’t comfortable exploring it with the administration. While he never gave up on his dream, it took him several years of just being grateful for the opportunities that came his way, he was introduced to Dr. Stephen Post, who requested Matt join him at the organization he formed called the Institute for Research on Unlimited Love, funded by the John Templeton Foundation. Without hesitation, Matt took the position as and served as Vice President and Project Director for a $2.3M grant called the Flame of Love aimed on fulfilling the “Great Commandment”—loving and knowing God’s love and then reaching out to love others. “It’s interesting that so many people have had experiences of divine love - real meaningful experiences,” Lee says. “Roughly 80-percent of Americans have this experience that increases their compassion for others, makes them want to reach out to somebody in need, whether it’s a friend, a stranger, or perhaps sometimes even an enemy.” Going further into his research, an overwhelming pattern began to appear. Lee would discover scientific evidence that supported the hypothesis that serving others leads to greater levels of perceived happiness. “What people discover… is when they serve others, they begin to appreciate the sacred quality of life and the sacred quality of relationships that they didn’t fully appreciate before,” Lee says. In the recent years, Dr. Lee has been working with kids in recovery from substance abuse and delinquencies and saw that a lot of them came from adverse backgrounds -- they had been neglected or victimized in some way -- and many of them adapted by becoming depressed, self-centered or narcissistic. However, when these same kids are in recovery and start getting involved in the twin virtues of Love and Service, the world shifts for them. “There’s a difference between work that’s interesting and rewarding, and work that is truly significant,” Lee says. “It may be that the work is truly significant is not the work we do for a paycheck, it’s not what we do for the most of our waking hours that give us meaning.” THANKS, Dr. Matthew T. We’ll discuss why love is something people all over the globe treasure and desire. “When the security and well-being of another is as real and meaningful to you as your own- you love that person” - Dr. Stephen Post What We Discuss in This Deep Dive: Contrary to common beliefs, research has shown that children are born generous with a natural empathy. The concept of love is difficult for a lot of people to get their hands around. We should be using an every day description with universal examples. Being a loving person does not mean you do not look after your own needs. Loving yourself is paramount. The great religions and traditions teach cultivating their "true self," learning how to respect others. Companies that are generous with their employees see increases to their bottom line. Cultivating workplaces that value compassion and generosity is good for business. If you are like 80% of Americans, you are watching 3.5 hours a day – which is far too much. A new study published in the American Journal of Preventive Medicine shows a link between television watching times and the 6 leading causes of death. Heart disease, diabetes, influenza/pneumonia, Parkinson's disease, liver disease, and cancer risks are all increased with the number of hours dedicated to time in-front of the tube. The study looked at over 200K people and found that 3-4 hours of television watching per day was linked to a 15% more likely to die, and at 7 or more hours, that risk increased to 47%. Discuss  What are some of your favorite stories What do you say to those who “don't have time” or “don't have money” Why Good Things Happen to Good People, Stephen Post, a professor of preventative medicine at Stony Brook University, reports that giving to others has been shown to increase health benefits in people with chronic illness, including HIV and multiple sclerosis. A 1999 study out of the University of California, Berkeley, found that elderly people who volunteered for two or more organizations were 44% less likely to die over a five-year period than were non-volunteers, even after taking into account age, exercise habits, general health, and poor habits. Stephanie Brown of the University of Michigan studied elderly couples . She and her colleagues found that those who provided help to friends, relatives, or neighbors, or gave emotional support to their spouses, had a lower risk of dying over a five-year period than those who didn't. Interesting finding in this study – the giver benefited the most because receiving help wasn't linked to a reduced death risk. Researchers suggest that may improve physical health and longevity because it decreases stress. In a 2006 study at Johns Hopkins University and the University of Tennessee, people who provided social support to others had lower blood pressure. http://greatergood.berkeley.edu/article/item/5_ways_giving_is_good_for_you   Judy tease DD – grab a pen! 844-well100. "He who believes is strong; he who doubts is weak. Strong convictions precede great actions." - J.F. Clarke For years I have been convinced that in order to get people to be more generous we needed to find a way to find out what’s in it for them. Then, I was lucky enough to find a book that has become one of my all-time favorites – Why Good Things Happen to Good People, by Dr. Stephen Post. Dr. Post is a world renowned leader in the study of altruism, compassion and service. He is one of my heroes and I talk about his research on a regular basis. Having him on the show was like an aspiring basketball coach getting the opportunity to interview Mike Krzyzewski. Stephen is the Founding Director for the Center for Medical Humanities, Compassionate Care, and Bioethics at Stony Brook University and travels the world speaking on the topics of giving, happiness, health, and success. As if that wasn’t already impressive, Stephen earned a PhD from the University of Chicago and has been a medical school professor for nearly three decades. He’s been interviewed on broadcasts such as: ABC 20/20, Nightline, The Daily Show, John Stossel, “Talk of the Nation”, and the The Mehmet Oz Show. In this episode, you’ll discover: What happened when his website was hacked and shutdown by ISIS. How he channeled a drinking addiction in his early teens into a lifelong passion and career. The proven scientific correlation between personal giving and bottom-line growth for your business. His formula for developing successful outcomes in your life. Strategies and ideas for you to implement a philanthropic program within your business. The concept of "Unlimited Love" and studies with widowers and those having experienced traumatic events.
