She was an Elected Member of the Italian Lower House of Parliament, the Chamber of Deputies, from March 2018 to June 2021 and resigned to take up her appointment by the EU Council as the EU Special Representative for the Sahel region in Africa. She was a member of the Foreign Affairs Commission at the Italian Parliament until June 2021 and was appointed President of the Standing Committee on the implementation of Agenda 2030 and sustainable development until June 2021. She is a Jean Monnet Professor of Sociology at the Sapienza University, a director of film-documentaries on conflicts, coexistence and ethno-religious persecutions, and founder and president until 2017 of EPOS, a non-profit organization active in conflict areas with projects for the reconstruction of the Civil Society and governance, in particular for refugees and welcoming communities.

Millions of people around the world are on the move today in search of a safe and better life. It's estimated over 100 million people were displaced last year. Over 30 million are refugees and 5 million are asylum seekers. The UN body for refugees says 72% of the refugees originate from just five countries: Syria, Venezuela, Ukraine, Afghanistan and South Sudan. These refugees are often fleeing persecution, conflict, violence, natural disasters and human rights violations. They make the dangerous journey across land and sea to seek asylum in other countries. Over the years, thousands have died or gone missing in the the Mediterranean trying to reach Europe. While, with help from the UNHCR and host countries, many get legal status and are settled, thousands are held in processing centres and camps, often for years. We discuss problems with the current international asylum system and ask what would a fair global asylum system could look like? Owen Bennett Jones is joined by: Gerald Knaus - the founding chairman of German think tank The European Stability Initiative. Jeff Crisp - former head of policy development and evaluation at the UNHCR. Dr Ashwini Vasanthakumar - author of The Ethics of Exile: A Political Theory of Diaspora. On Sunday, September 25th, Italy held a snap election following the resignation of prime minister Mario Draghi and the dissolution of the Italian Parliament. The election resulted in a parliamentary majority a right-wing coalition led by Fratelli d'Italia (or Brothers of Italy), a far-right party with roots in postwar Italian neofascist movements. The party and its leader, new Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni, espouse social conservatism, nationalism, populism, opposition to immigration, and Euroscepticism. Meloni's election holds significant policy implications not only for domestic Italian society, but also for Italy's relationship with the European Union and the wider world. Noelle Turtur, the Eugen and Jacqueline Weber Postdoctoral Scholar in European History at UCLA, joins Ben Zdencanovic on Then & Now to discuss the historical roots Italian fascism, the legacies of fascism in Italian politics, and what Meloni's election might mean for Italy and the international system.

Mayor Gabriel Groisman's Brief Bio Mayor Gabriel Groisman has been serving his community since November 2014, first being elected as a Councilman, and then in November 2016 was elected as the Mayor of Bal Harbour, Florida. He wrote and passed the nation's first municipal anti-BDS ordinance in December 2015 and was the first in the nation to codify a uniform definition of anti-Semitism in December 2017. Groisman's subsequent dealings with a local church who had previously boycotted and divested from Israel is the first documented success story of anti-BDS legislation. He is a sought after public speaker, regularly speaking to groups about fighting anti-semitism and the BDS movement, and related topics. April was Sexual Assault Awareness Month, and one way to raise awareness was by wearing jeans on 'Denim Day' which was on 28 April 2021. Denim Day is on a Wednesday in April every year and is to remind society of the dangers and injustices of victim blaming. The campaign began after the Italian Supreme Court, in 1999, overturned a rape conviction in which an 18-year-old student in Italy was raped by her 45-year-old driving instructor during a driving lesson in 1992. They ruled that because she was wearing tight jeans, there must have been consent. The following day, the women in the Italian Parliament came to work wearing jeans in solidarity with the victim. Since then, what started as a local campaign to bring awareness to victim blaming and destructive myths that surround sexual violence has grown into a movement. We are all familiar with the refrain: “she was asking for it…”; “what did he expect?”. These are of course weak excuses for criminal behaviour, if not outright condonement. Denim Day asks community members, elected officials, businesses and students to make a social statement with their fashion statement by wearing jeans on this day as a visible means of protest against the misconceptions that surround sexual violence. This is particular apt given current concerns about sexual assault and harassment in schools and universities. Ofsted inspectors are to carry out checks on schools in England that have been the subject of recent complaints about sexual harassment and assault. The education watchdog said inspection teams would visit a sample of institutions where cases have been highlighted on the Everyone’s Invited website, which has collected more than 14,000 testimonies including alleged rapes and sexual attacks among children of school age. The visits will form part of an emergency review of sexual abuse in schools and colleges, due to be completed by the end of May. Ofsted said it would not report on individual schools or cases but would look at good and bad practice across the country. About the Speaker: Dr Enrico Letta was Prime Minister of Italy from April 2013 to February 2014. He previously served as Minister for EU Affairs and Minister for Industry, Commerce.   There's been a lot of news so far this week, but mainly companies getting out their interim results at the last minute, so I'll focus on the more interesting ones and those that might offer potential.   Providence Resources and Lansdowne Oil & Gas eventually had to call it a day with the Chinese investors after their funds they claimed to have transferred yet again failed to arrive.  Providence now is capitalised at £24 million and Lansdowne at £6 million, but in Barryroe they do actually own a genuine asset.  The shares are highly speculative, but offer huge and real potential.  Estimated 2C recoverable resources are over 300 million barrels of oil from the two main tested reservoir intervals at Barryroe, and further resource potential has also been identified in other hydrocarbon bearing intervals with estimates of up to over 1 billion barrels of oil.  I think Providence and Lansdowne might be worth a punt at these levels.   UK Oil & Gas and Alba Mineral Resourcesannounced the spud of the Horse Hill-2/2z Portland well.  Both the HH-2z and the existing HH-1 Kimmeridge well are expected to be put into long term production by the end of 2019.  I suspect production could easily surpass 1,000 barrels of oil per day - and they have permission to drill another four wells.  Given its niche as a British onshore oil producer, UKOG at a current capitalisation of £67 million and ALBA at a capitalisation of £7 million offer opportunity.   Global Petroleum is a company rarely mentioned.  It's capitalised at just £3 million, but has a lot of assets, particularly its licences offshore Namibia, which cover 11,607 square kilometres (that's nearly 3 million acres) and make it one of the largest acreage holders in the region.  Global also own licences offshore Italy where it has been fighting actions by environmentalists in the courts - and winning.  It's an interesting situation now in Italy, since to stop these endless battles between oil companies and greens, the Italian Parliament passed a Bill in February this year suspending all hydrocarbon exploration activities, including permit applications, for a period of 18 months. Following the 18 month evaluation period, the intention is that a hydrocarbon plan will be activated, setting out a strategy for exploration and production, excluding certain areas from future hydrocarbon exploitation.  These environmental disputes are what has been holding back oil exploration activity in Italy and those companies whose areas do get approved are going to hit the jackpot, since many of the potential resources in these licences are huge and highly profitable if allowed to be developed.  The company has more than enough cash to keep it going and Global is another one that could be worth a punt.  It just takes one farm-out to propel this North.   I3 Energy issued its interim report on Monday and set out a clear explanation of the current situation.  The first well result was a surprise to the third-party consultants who conducted due diligence, which I think explains the heavy institutional selling.  All three sets of seismic utilised to map the Liberator structure had conformed to one another and resolved the 13/23c-9 well location as a low-risk target at a structural high.  However, the targeted upper Captain sand was not penetrated at the first well location, so i3 acquired the only other available seismic dataset over the area. This had previously been reviewed by the Company and determined to be unsuitable.  However, reprocessed, they believe this seismic will enable additional interpretation. To allow time to analyse the data and potentially re-permit an alternative location for Liberator's next appraisal well, i3 is preparing the rig to drill Serenity's SA-01 as the second well. Mobilisation operations will commence as soon as the consent to locate permit is obtained and, once drilling begins, the well is anticipated to take approximately four weeks.  I think the current market capitalisation of £20 million looks fair.  From here, there is going to be an exploration well targeting a potentially significant target at Serenity and possibly an appraisal well at Liberator.  It's no longer the development deal it was before, but like the others mentioned previously it could be an interesting speculation.   Independent Oil & Gas which I mentioned positively at the weekend is still being bought by Richard Griffiths of Jersey and Lombard Odier, both of whom filed TR-1s. There's good news flow coming up here and I thought it interesting to see that IG is no longer allowing leveraged purchases on this.  The market capitalisation is £73 million, so there's still plenty of upside when the scale of the project is considered.   Finally, Bahamas Petroleum Company, which I stated the last two weekends as currently overpriced but interesting once a placing is done, is now down by about half.  They've now formally announced that they're in the process of arranging funding for their big drill next year and as I've said before it's one to keep an eye on and look at picking up after the placing.   I'll be back at the weekend with more on the podcast.   In the meantime, all the small-cap oil companies are covered in the blog and daily on Twitter.

For the past 20 years, Peace Over Violence has run its Denim Day campaign on a Wednesday in April in honor of Sexual Assault Awareness Month. The campaign began after a ruling by the Italian Supreme Court where a rape conviction was overturned because the justices felt that since the victim was wearing tight jeans she must have helped the person who raped her remove her jeans, thereby implying consent. The following day, the women in the Italian Parliament came to work wearing jeans in solidarity with the victim. Peace Over Violence developed the Denim Day campaign in response to this case and the activism surrounding it. Since then, wearing jeans on Denim Day has become a symbol of protest against erroneous and destructive attitudes about sexual harassment, abuse, assault and rape. Darrell Castle introduces Matteo Salvini, Deputy Prime Minister of Italy, and his successful approach to ending illegal immigration in his country. Transcription / Notes: MATTEO SALVINI—MANY ENEMIES, MUCH HONOR Hello, this is Darrell Castle with today's Castle Report. Today is Friday, March 22, 2019, and on today's Report I will be talking about Matteo Salvini, the deputy prime minister of Italy, and the extraordinary courage he has shown in his efforts to curtail illegal migration into Italy primarily from Africa and the Middle East. The title of this Report is a recent quote from Mr. Salvini and it reflects his approach to his work. He believes that his enemies give him a chance to honor his promises and his love of Italy and the Italian people. Let's take a look at who this man is and how he came to be in a position of such importance to Italy and to the world today. He is important among the world's politicians because against overwhelming opposition he stuck his finger in the dike and is holding back migration, primarily Muslim migration, into Italy. Much to the chagrin of globalists such as George Soros who pays for much of the migration. I know that the migration, especially from Africa, is funded by Mr. Soros' Open Society Foundation because he admits it, and even describes how and how much money he allocates to it.  Mr. Salvini has demonstrated that it can be stopped, despite the opposition, if one has enough courage to do what it takes and what he promised to do if elected. Mr. Salvini is 46 years old, divorced with two children. In June 2018, he was elected Deputy Prime Minister of Italy and Minister of the Interior. He has also served as a senator in the Italian Senate and as a member of the Italian Parliament.  He is usually described as “far right” by the press because he is very critical of the European Union, especially the Euro. The primary reason he is usually described as “far right or extreme right” is because he opposes illegal immigration into Italy and into Europe. He apparently believes that illegal immigration is actually illegal and should be stopped. He campaigned for office and came to power in the same wave of populist sentiment that brought the Presidency of the United States to Donald Trump. He is a populist who was elected out of similar sentiments as Mr. Trump. The politicians, who run the United States, and the European Union including Italy, are very rarely attuned to the will of their people. The result is that periodically people who live in democratic societies where they are empowered to elect leaders sometimes go off the reservation and do something the powers that be do not want them to do. I have always argued that Mr. Trump's election was important because of what it represents rather than who he is. It represents the people rising up with whatever feeble power they have left to resist their global overlords who always seem to know what is best for them. In Italy, Mr. Salvini saw what Illegal immigration was doing economically and socially to his country and he started speaking out against it. He told the people that if they would elect him he would put a stop to it and they believed him. He is referred to by his people as “Il Capitano” or The Captain, and according to many of the publications which usually describe him as far right or extreme right, he is constantly touring Italy out among the people transmitting his energy to them. You can watch videos of him wading into the crowds, shaking hands and kissing babies. He says that's how he gets the power, the life force, and the confidence he needs to fight off the nation-wreckers. In my view he is a good example of what is needed and what can be done by someone determined and unafraid. His quote and the title of this Report “Many enemies, much honor” basically says it all. He does have many enemies and is often the subject of vicious attacks. He just tries to keep a thick skin and let the social media comments go by. Unlike Mr.

Speaker Biography: Marcello Pera has participated in many scientific workshops, conferences and congresses organized by universities and research institutes in Italy and abroad. He has written a number of articles and essays for Italian and international journals, in particular concerning scientific method, theory of evidence, and scientific argumentation. He is the author of a number of books, including "The Ambiguous Frog," "The Galvani-Volta Controversy on Animal Electricity" and "The Discourses of Science" Speaker Biography: Giannicola Sinisi is the attache for Justice Affairs at the Embassy of Italy. He has a doctorate in law, served in the Ministry of Interior, and is a former senator of the Italian Parliament. He has long had an interest on Gaetano Filangieri and the Neapolitan Enlightenment. Speaker Biography: Antonin Gregory Scalia is an American jurist who serves as an associate justice of the Supreme Court of the United States. As the longest-serving justice on the Court, Scalia is the senior associate justice. Appointed to the Court by President Ronald Reagan in 1986, Scalia has been described as the intellectual anchor of the Court's conservative wing. Speaker Biography: Monica D'Agostini has a master's degree in history and is currently a doctoral candidate at the University of Bologna in Italy. She worked as a fellow in the European Division during the summer of 2010 gathering primary sources for Giannicola Sinisi in a research project on Gaetano Filangieri and Benjamin Franklin.

TRANSCRIPT An Italian politician caused a political upheaval last week when she said Bill Gates needs to be arrested on charges of crimes against humanity. The comments exploded across social media because of the underlying issue following Bill Gates — he's a fan of a smaller human population. And while he routinely pushes contraception and abortion as a means to lessen or decrease the number of new arrivals on the planet, there's another concern about him that raises even more eyebrows: It's his vaccine-mania. Through the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation — by the way, wife Melinda is baptized Catholic and a huge supporter of contraception to decrease the population — the Foundation carries out the work of trying to shrink the number of humans. We are guinea pigs for the drug makers. Sara Cunial of the Italian Parliament attacked her own government's heavy-handed and destructive response to the Wuhan crisis, saying it was carried out under the influence of Gates. She then went on to brand him as a "vaccine criminal." She also called out the link between the World Health Organization (WHO) and Gates' funding of it, and caused further uproar when she tweeted out that Gates and his vaccines were just a means to "free genocide," noting that Gates is vaccine-happy in poor countries. Recent news reports revealed Gates offered what amounted to a $10 million bribe to the Nigerian House of Representatives for a forced vaccination program for the Wuhan virus. Politicians in Nigeria turned down the offer, flatly. The subject of the vaccine-happy Gates' particular focus on youth has not gone uncommented-on, either. None other than Robert F. Kennedy Jr., nephew of President John F. Kennedy and chairman of the Children's Health Defense, is on record on the CHD website saying: "Vaccines, for Bill Gates, are a strategic philanthropy that feeds his many vaccine-related businesses (including Microsoft's ambition to control a global vaccination-ID enterprise) and give him dictatorial control of global health policy." In 2000, Gates was allowed into India to direct the nation's immunization effort against polio. Under his leadership, up to 50 doses of polio vaccines were administered to enormous numbers of Indian children before age five and hundreds of thousands of those children became paralyzed over the next roughly 20 years. While he was advancing his polio effort in India, he started up another vaccine program testing experimental HPV vaccines, designed to protect against sexual infection. In one year alone, 2009, 23,000 young girls were inoculated. According to Kennedy, 1,200 suffered severe side effects, with seven young girls actually dying. As if India wasn't enough, Gates took his vaccine tour to Africa where 50 of the 500 vaccinated children developed paralysis. The Left is always yammering on about colonialism, but apparently it's okay for leftist white men to use a nation to advance their social engineering, especially a black nation. Newspapers in South Africa took note: "We are guinea pigs for the drug makers," blared the headlines. So why does any of this matter beyond the level of pure disgust? Because Gates' money opens whatever doors he wants opened, and right now, vaccines are all the rage. There's a love triangle between Dr. Anthony Fauci, the WHO, and Bill Gates — an interrelationship that many are becoming extremely bothered by, particularly in light of leftist governors talking about "mandatory" vaccines and penalties for refusing. Lots of ideas are being dropped into the media about travel cards, certificates to prove you've been vaccinated before going into stores and so forth. Perhaps the wisest advice on all this is from that same Italian minister of Parliament who said a resistance must form against the lockdown measures and a refusal to submit to any mandatory vaccine program that might be presented by Gates and his allies in the medical-industrial complex.
