Enjoy this fun bonus episode with Karen Tartt, who shares her expertise with a phenomenal and tasty migraine friendly cocktail she created. Dr. Abbie Ross, PT, NCS, Dr. Danielle Tolman, PT and Karen are also joined by Christine Moyer from the podcast Unsteady and Unfiltered. First, prepare the "shrub"Woody Pear Shrub -1 ⅓ cup Pear Juice* -⅔ cup Cane Sugar -1 cup White Distilled Vinegar -2 large sprigs of Rosemary -4 bunches of Thyme -3 Bay Leaves Measure and add all ingredients into a pot on your stove. Cover and turn heat to high. Bring liquid to a boil. Turn down the heat, take off the lid and stir until the sugar is completely dissolved. Turn off the heat and let cool to room temperature. Pour the contents of the pot into a sealable container and store in the fridge for several hours or overnight. In the morning, strain steeped herbs out of the liquid using a wire mesh strainer or a nut milk bag. Store finished shrub in a sealable container in the fridge until use for up to a month. *Be mindful of the ingredient label when selecting a pear juice. You'll want to find one that uses ascorbic acid (powdered Vitamin C) as the color protectant instead of lemon juice. Knudsen Juice is a widely available brand that is safe, although I'm sure there are many that are also okay.Pear Cocktail-1 ¼ oz 40% Clear Spirit (vodka, gin, blanco tequila, etc.) -2 oz Woody Pear Shrub -Soda Water -Ice *Measure ingredients into a Collins glass over ice. Using a spoon, gently stir to incorporate all ingredients. Garnish with additional herbs (rosemary, thyme & bay). About KarenIn March of 2019, after 18 months of searching for answersto the seemingly mysterious symptoms Karen had been experiencing, she was diagnosed with Chronic Vestibular Migraine. Post diagnosis, she learned about the Johns Hopkins Migraine Diet through Dr. David Buchholz's book, “Heal Your Headache”, and started to undergo the tedious elimination process to figure out her personal migraine triggers. In May of 2020, during the Covid pandemic quarantine, Karen launched a blog focused on migraine-friendly cocktails for the at-home bartender, Tartt Drinks. This creative outlet, along with an online audience of fellow migraineurs, provided a space for her to explore the cocktails, flavorsand spirits that were missing from the lives of those affected by migraine. Her migraine-friendly cocktails have since been featured in the Bombay Sapphire Artist Showcase, Speed Rack Trading Cards, Dizzy Cook's first book release party, Miles for Migraine Social Events and an upcoming cocktail book. She currently resides in San Francisco, CA and works at Wildhawk in the Mission District. She's currently researching gas chromatography analysis in spirits to more clearly define what makes a spirit migraine-friendly. She's also studying different ways to create more complete citrus alternatives.Karen can be reached for consultations and inquiries at clearspiritandmind@gmail.com.Hosted by:

Date sugar is a great option to sweeten up your life as it is literally granulated dried dates. 3. Monkfruit is another great option it is over a 100 times sweeter than cane sugar. 4. Stevia leaf extract is another near zero calories sweetener similar to monkfruit in that it is 100x sweeter than sugar cane and would be a good option to help overcome sugar cane cravings.  5. Maple syrup especially the extra dark kind is a big winner.    -------- Start accumulating health with the Shake the Sugar guide: ⬇️⬇️⬇️ https://drwholeness.com/stsguide Ask your lifestyle health questions on social media, tag @drwholeness and use #accumulatehealth. -------- Connect with Dr. Matt online:

Colombia's remote, Arhuaco tribe has been cultivating heirloom sugarcane varietals high in the mountains of the Sierra Nevada de Santa Marta for generations. After visiting Colombia and being introduced to this tradition, Philadelphia-based entrepreneur Hustino Mitchell had an idea for a new business– to bring rare ancestral cane sugars to the international market while creating direct social impact to the small-plot farmers who cultivate it. Just as he was getting ready to launch, the entire world was shook by COVID-19 and Hustino and his family found themselves sheltering in place in Colomba’s remote mountain region. In this interview, learn how: Hustino is launching a food business in the midst of a global pandemic. Heirloma is preserving a biodiverse future for cane sugar while supporting local indigenous tribes Hustino and his family are embracing a new way of life in Colombia We also talk a lot about cane sugar, what makes it different from the sugar most of us are used to, and what we can all learn from the Arhuacos about being better protectors of our natural resources. Suzanne Himka, fitness expert, enthusiast and Dietician joins the show and gives some really useful information about diet including: sugar, gluten and junk food. To get the most out of this interview we suggest listening to the show and subscribing in iTunes. But if you can’t listen or for some weird reason you like to read… Here are 3 of the highlights. Sugar – Sugar is 7 times more addictive than the drug cocaine and in a can of soda there are about 35-45 grams of sugar. 1 teaspoon of sugar is 4 grams, divide 45 by 4 and you get about 11 teaspoons of sugar in one soda/soft drink. The recommended intake for sugar is 6 teaspoons per day so that means with one can of soda you are consuming close to twice the recommended sugar intake. Furthermore, kids are drinking about 4 sodas per day so that means 8 times the recommended sugar intake for the day and that’s just soda, not to including anything else! Suzanne also describes how sugar affect the immune system, while your body is trying to figure out what to do with all of the sugar that’s coming in your immune system has to work very hard and it can’t pay attention to anything else leaving you wide open if there is some kind of sickness or virus. With all that being said it’s safe to assume that eating too much sugar and being sick all the time can go hand in hand. Finally, she tells us to ditch the high fructose corn syrup because it is stored as fat. If you’re going to consume sugar use it sparingly and use natural sweeteners like: Agave, Raw, Cane Sugar or Stevia (for diabetics). FUN FACT – Splenda was discovered in the lab originally as a pesticide! Gluten – Gluten is actually ok for 99% of the population however that 1% suffers from Celiac Disease which can actually lead to death! What happens when a person with Celiac Disease eats gluten? There is a weird response in the stomach where the way we absorb nutrients is turned off, so over time the body isn’t getting its nutrients and suffers from malnutrition. However, another 15% of the population is gluten insensitive which will cause a person to have headaches and feel tired all of the time. Both a person with Celiac and who are gluten insensitive should stay away from gluten. Detoxing – Suzanne tells us how the detox process works and how our bodies are naturally good at detoxing but in order for our bodies to be able to detox we need to stop adding toxins! A good way to detox for a day would be to juice. The best way to juice would be to use organic fruits and veggies because you want to make sure that there are no pesticides on the foods that will have an adverse effect on what you’re trying to do. If you can, use a juicer but a blender will work fine too. These are just 3 of the great tips I could remember! For more great info and fun listen to the entire show! In addition to dropping knowledge bombs on us in the podcast Suzanne also helps kids, families and the community stay in shape and get their diets in control. She is so much fun and if you’re looking for someone to help you she is available for hire. She does one on one coaching as well as whole family coaching from diet to exercise you can find her at her website: SuzanneHimka.com She and her husband offer Ninja style fitness camps for kids where they get to try some really cool obstacles! You can find out about that at Here: NinjaCamp We would like to thank Suzanne for bring her years of experience and energy to the show! Fun fact: Suzanne competed in an episode of American Gladiator! Please tell me you remember that show otherwise I’ll fell really old…

John Nese is the proprietor of Galco's Soda Pop Stop in LA. His father ran it as a grocery store, and when the time came for John to take charge, he decided to convert it into the ultimate soda-lover's destination. About 500 pops line the shelves, sourced lovingly by John from around the world. John has made it his mission to keep small soda-makers afloat and help them find their consumers. Galco's also acts as a distributor for restaurants and bars along the West Coast, spreading the gospel of soda made with cane sugar (no high-fructose corn syrup if John can avoid it).
