Ben Berman Ghan is the author of the bestselling novel, The Years Shall Run Like Rabbits (Wolsak & Wynn, 2024). The Years Shall Run Like Rabbits is a gorgeously complex work of literary speculative fiction. With elements of science fiction and horror dropped in amongst stunning literary prose, the debut novel spans centuries, covering humanity's colonization of the moon, a war with alien beings, AI minds governing Canada, and a giant spacefaring whale. The book is centred around Toronto and shows a version of a Canadian future that will amaze and stun readers, while raising important questions about the ethics and power of AI, humanity's claim to space, and the systematic destruction of our current planet. More About The Years Shall Run Like Rabbits: A gorgeously complex work of literary speculative fiction that spans centuries The Years Shall Run Like Rabbits starts in 2014 with a winged alien sowing the seeds of a strange forest on the moon. The novel then moves through humanity's colonization of the moon and its consequences, onto a war with alien beings within a spacefaring whale, a cyborg mind that sleeps for hundreds of years after sheltering the city of Toronto from the worst of the war and finally a recreation of humanity. Ghan poses thoughtful questions about artificial intelligence, humanity's quest for the stars and ecological destruction in this wide-ranging story, which is held together equally by beautiful writing and deft characterization. The end result is an ambitious debut that leaves the reader contemplating many amazing possibilities for the future of our world. During World War I, thousands of young African men conscripted to fight for France and Britain were captured and held as prisoners of war in Germany, where their stories and songs were recorded and archived by German linguists. In Knowing by Ear: Listening to Voice Recordings with African Prisoners of War in German Camps (1915–1918) (Duke University Press, 2024), Anette Hoffmann demonstrates that listening to these acoustic recordings as historical sources, rather than linguistic samples, opens up possibilities for new historical perspectives and the formation of alternate archival practices and knowledge production. She foregrounds the archival presence of individual speakers and positions their recorded voices as responses to their experiences of colonialism, war, and the journey from Africa to Europe. By engaging with the recordings alongside written sources, photographs, and artworks depicting the speakers, Hoffmann personalizes speakers from present-day Senegal, Somalia, Togo, and Congo. Knowing by Ear includes transcriptions of numerous recordings of spoken and sung texts, revealing acoustic archives as significant yet under-researched sources for recovering the historical speaking positions of colonized subjects and listen to the acoustic echo of colonial knowledge production. Anette Hoffmann received her Phd at the Amsterdam School for Cultural Analysis in 2005. From 2006 she has engaged with acoustic and audio-visual collections as part of the colonial archive. On the basis of her research and the practice of close listening in collaboration with translators and historians in/from Africa, she has developed an approach on sound recordings as alternative sources of colonial history and as a crucial part of histories of colonial knowledge production. Her engagement with sound archives has benefited immensely from working as a researcher at the Archive and Public Culture Research Initiative at the University of Cape Town (until 2014). Currently she is affiliated with the University of Cologne. Hoffmann is also an artist and a curator. Her exhibition What We See, which engaged with recordings from Namibia (1931) was first shown in the Slave Lodge in Cape Town in 2009 and was also shown in Namibia, Germany, Switzerland and Austria. A sound track based on the recording with Abdoulaye Niang was presented at the Theodore Monod Museum for African Art in Dakar, Senegal, in 2024. New work, based on silent movies from the Kalahari, on which she works with the video artist Jannik Franzen, engages with the companion species of German Colonialism in Namibia and will be shown in Vienna in 2025. I'm blessed and honored to have you with us on this journey, and I know it will impact people. So this book, you'll see I'll have it on the cover of each episode, was found at my grandparents' house after my grandmother died, and my grandfather, it was his, passed away almost five years ago. And the reason why it was on my heart to do this was instead of going by myself, it would be the best How is the best way for fathers or grandfathers to read through Scripture, 52 specific verses, and then how it can be used in their life? So what Daniel and I are going to do is we're going to use the SOAP method: The term "SOAP method" is often associated with a structured approach to studying and reflecting on scripture. The SOAP method is an acronym that stands for Scripture, Observation, Application, and Prayer. It provides a systematic way to engage with and apply the teachings found in the Bible. Here's a brief overview of each step: 1. **Scripture:** - Choose a passage or verse from the Bible to focus on. Read and meditate on the selected scripture. 2. **Observation:** - Reflect on the passage and observe details such as keywords, themes, and any significant context. Consider the historical and cultural context of the passage. 3. **Application:** - Apply the teachings of the scripture to your own life. Consider how the passage can impact your beliefs, attitudes, and actions. Think about practical steps you can take based on the insights gained from the scripture. 4. **Prayer:** - Conclude your reflection with a prayer. Communicate with God about what you've learned, express gratitude, seek guidance, or ask for strength to apply the lessons from the scripture. The German-Swiss duo with the unlikely name of Grandbrothers draws on electronic dance music, ambient music, and minimalism. Their tag line is “messing around with grand pianos since 2012,” which captures the essence of their play: they use ALL parts of the piano to generate raw sounds –the notes of the keyboard but also striking the wooden case; or flossing, well, bowing the strings; and E-Bow-like contraptions that oscillate the strings – which are sampled, processed, and assembled in real time. The results are striking creations that are not out of place in either a cathedral or a dance club. Their latest record is Late Reflections, and it brings Grandbrothers, who are the Swiss engineer/mechanic/software designer Lukas Vogel and German-Turkish pianist Erol Sarp, to play in the studio on the occasion of their first U.S. tour. What We See, Touch, Taste, Smell, & Feel shape our perceptive, these perceptions go in to create beliefs and install our mindset. We then go on to create our reality. LIFE
Adapt, balance and move forward when the time comes. Life moves on and so should we. Listen to this wonderful folktale of the "Two Frogs from Japan" in the episode "Don't Dwell". The story warns us about how expectations and our easily mistaken senses can lead us astray. Do not believe all that you see, for what we see may not always be real. The answer to every adversity lies in courageously moving forward with faith. When you are trying to move forward, don't look back. You can't move forward if your are still clinging to your past visions, ideas and experiences.

Charles Randall Paul – From Dueling Dualities to Dynamic Duo Dance PartnersHow Trusting Hearts Can Live in “Peaceful Tension” with Opposing Minds Aired Tuesday, February 23, 2021 at 2:00 PM PST / 5:00 PM EST Interview with Charles Randall Paul, President of Foundation for Inter-Religious Diplomacy“Truth lives in our hearts, beliefs lie in our heads.” — Swami BeyondanandaOne of the big problems with finding a commonly-sensed common sense consensus among citizens across the political spectrum is that … well, we disagree. And these days, different political narratives mean different realities. On last week’s show, we featured the new documentary, “The Reunited States of America,” and how respectful, face-to-face, heart-to-heart communication can rehumanize the “other” and affirm “beloved community.”And then what?Do we pretend we don’t disagree on fundamental issues and worldviews? Do we dance around these profound differences, or is there another way? Last summer, I interviewed two thirds of a trio looking to create breakthrough in this regard. Arthur Pena and Jacob Hess are two close friends coming from completely different worldviews. Jacob is a conservative member of the Latter Day Saints. Arthur characterizes himself as a “gay, libertarian, Marxist.”Our guest this week, Charles Randall Paul, is co-authoring a book with Arthur and Jacob, Inevitable Influencers: Why (deep down) We All Want—and Need—to Persuade Each Other of What We See as Good, Beautiful, and True. All three of these gentlemen believe in the seemingly paradoxical “peaceful tension” that can be created when our hearts are unified in the field of love and coherence, while our beliefs might be totally contradictory. Randall Paul seeks to turn our dueling dualities into dynamic duo dance partners, or as he calls them, “trustworthy rivals, not coercive enemies.”Randall Paul, Ph.D., is the president of the Foundation for Inter-Religious Diplomacy. A native of New Jersey, he has a BS from Brigham Young University in social psychology and an MBA from Harvard University. He worked as a business partner at Trammell Crow Company in the southwestern USA, where he developed many commercial real estate projects for sixteen years. He then obtained a doctorate in 2000 at the Committee on Social Thought at the University of Chicago, writing his dissertation on methods for engaging in religious conflict without acrimony or violence. He is on the executive board of the Society for Mormon Philosophy and Theology, and is an editor of the International Journal for Decision Ethics. Having served as a missionary for the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in France and Belgium, he has held numerous callings since, including service as a bishop. If you’d like to discover how changing hearts can be more transformational than changing minds, please join us this Tuesday, February 23rd at 2 pm PT / 5 pm ET.You can find out more about Religious Diplomacy here. http://religious-diplomacy.org/Support Wiki Politiki — A Clear Voice In the “Bewilderness”If you LOVE what you hear, and appreciate the mission of Wiki Politiki, “put your money where your mouse is” … Join the “upwising” — join the conversation, and become a Wiki Politiki supporter: http://wikipolitiki.com/join-the-upwising/ Make a contribution in any amount via PayPal (https://tinyurl.com/y8fe9dks)Go ahead, PATRONIZE me! Episode 91As you all know by now, Fr. James Altman, the most courageous priest we've heard in a lifetime, was unjustly silenced by his bishop, William Callahan of the Diocese of La Crosse. I'd planned on doing straight politics up until the presidential election, but coming to Fr. Altman's defense is entirely too important to put off. So Bishop Callahan's cowardly action against Fr. Altman is what we're going to talk about in this episode. Arthur Peña and Jacob Hess – Can We Disagree Without Becoming Enemies?Beyond Understanding and Empathy to Collaborating and “Co-Resisting”Aired Tuesday, April 7, 2020 at 2:00 PM PST / 5:00 PM ESTInterview with Arthur Peña and Jacob Hess, Co-Authors (with Randall Charles Paul) of “Inevitable Influencers: Why (deep down) We All Want—and Need—to Persuade Each Other of What We See as Good, Beautiful, and True“Q. How do I end an argument with someone I disagree with?A. Tell them, ‘You’re absolutely right. And so am I.’”— Swami BeyondanandaA gay Marxist Spanish teacher and a Mormon mindfulness practitioner walk into a bar – and that is NOT a joke.Despite seemingly opposite backgrounds, Arthur Peña and Jacob Hess have not only become friends, but also collaborators. And they have done so by boldly speaking their truths with, and listening to, one another. At a time when people are de-platformed and “canceled” for speaking their truth and political correctness is proving itself politically incorrect, how DO we use our differences in a dynamic and transformational way? My guests this week Arthur Peña and Jacob Hess, are the co-authors along with Randall Charles Paul of an upcoming book, “Inevitable Influencers: Why (deep down) We All Want—and Need—to Persuade Each Other of What We See as Good, Beautiful, and True”. (Wow. What a title. With a title that long, who needs a book?)Truth, beauty and goodness – as Plato stated and Rudolf Steiner reiterated – are the manifest expressions of love. And while love may be universal, love’s expressions are diverse. And while there’s a part of us who want to pretend these our differences can be glossed over, in doing so we miss out on the power of genuine engagement. Here is a quote from their book introduction:Without authentic conversation across our differences— with a genuine (albeit sometimes wary) openness to mutual persuasion—we fear we’ll be missing something very profound and precious. That’s why we argue here for the importance—for the vital necessity even—of “collaborative contestation among rivals” as we sometimes like to call it.Arthur Peña is a semi-retired teacher of Spanish and English as a Second Language. He has an M.A. in linguistics from the University of Iowa, and a Certificate in Conflict Resolution from Sonoma State University. Specializing in dialogue between liberals and conservatives, Arthur is a member of the National Coalition of Dialogue & Deliberation, and has organized and facilitated public discussion forums on controversial political issues, as well as a number of ongoing local Living Room Conversations.Jacob Hess is a mindfulness teacher and writer focused on exploring long-term, sustainable healing from depression. He is on the board of the National Coalition of Dialogue & Deliberation and co-author of “You’re Not as Crazy as I Thought, But You’re Still Wrong” – and has a passion for preserving space for people to disagree sharply, while still loving and respecting each other. He has a Ph.D. in clinical-community psychology from the University of Illinois, Urbana-Champaign. If you’re curious about how we move we can learn to disagree without becoming enemies, and shift from polite understanding and empathy to dynamic collaboration and “co-resisting”, please join us this Tuesday, April 7th 2-3 pm PT / 5-6 pm ET. http://omtimes.com/iom/shows/wiki-politiki-radio-show/To find out more about their upcoming book please go here: https://publicsquaremag.org/editorials/why-persuasion-shouldnt-be-a-dirty-word/Support Wiki Politiki — A Clear Voice In the “Bewilderness”If you LOVE what you hear, and appreciate the mission of Wiki Politiki, “put your money where your mouse is” … Join the “upwising” — join the conversation, and become a Wiki Politiki supporter: http://wikipolitiki.com/join-the-upwising/Make a contribution in any amount via PayPal (https://tinyurl.com/y8fe9dks)Go ahead, PATRONIZE me!
