Whale Rock Lighthouse (U.S. Coast Guard) Walter Eberle with his wife Agnes Whale Rock Light, a typical cast-iron “spark plug” type lighthouse, was constructed at the entrance to the west passage of Rhode Island's Narragansett Bay in 1882 to help mariners past a treacherous reef. Isolated Whale Rock was not a desirable location for keepers, and 16 different men served as head keeper between 1882 and 1909. A 1924 storm sent waves over the top of the tower and did some damage to the structure, but that storm was nothing compared to what was to come in 1938. Walter Barge Eberle, assistant keeper at Whale Rock Light in 1938, was the father of six children. On September 21, 1938, with practically no advance warning, a devastating hurricane was bearing down on New England's south facing coast. At about 5:30 the next morning, Keeper Daniel Sullivan phoned the Eberle family in Newport. His words were to the point: “The light is gone.” The lighthouse tower was completely gone, and Walter Eberle was never found. He was 40 years old. There are two interviews in this episode. The first, recorded in 2001, is with the surviving children of Walter Eberle. The woman who did most of the talking in the interview was Dorothy Roach, Eberle's oldest daughter. Also featured is David Robinson, the State Underwater Archaeologist for the state of Massachusetts and Director of the Massachusetts Board of Underwater Archaeological Resources. When he was based in Rhode Island, he was the first person to study the underwater remains of Whale Rock Lighthouse.

For 12 years, sex education advocates in Massachusetts have been pushing for a comprehensive bill to become law. But for 12 years, that proposal has floundered. The Healthy Youth Act would standardize sex education in schools that choose to participate. Right now, sex education is “completely unregulated” in Massachusetts, said Jaclyn Friedman, chair of the Healthy Youth Act Coalition. “In some school districts, they have policy on the books. Worcester and Boston provide, for example, great sex education that actually will be perfectly in line with the Healthy Youth Act when it passes,” Friedman told Under the Radar. “But in many communities, there is nothing on the books at all. And so, you might get no sex and relationships education. You might get really harmful propaganda that teaches shame about girls and sexuality, LGBTQ students and sexuality. You might get misinformation, or you might get good sex education. It's completely the luck of the draw.” But now supporters think the bill could pass in coming months — especially with Gov. Maura Healey in office. “We have a strong supporter in Healey's administration,” said Jennifer Hart, vice president of education, learning and engagement at Planned Parenthood League of Massachusetts. “Massachusetts is a trailblazer in all of these areas and now in a post-Roe landscape, we really need to double down on making sure that our young people have all the information that they need to be able to delay sex, to decrease unintended pregnancy, to improve their own health overall.” Hart said all the pieces of the puzzle are coming together, and that she is optimistic Massachusetts will soon implement sex ed standards. Even if the bill stalls, change may be on the horizon. Healey has recently proposed new updates to Massachusetts' health education framework that could bypass the state Legislature. The draft framework will be reviewed by the Massachusetts Board of Elementary and Secondary Education on June 27. If the draft is approved to be sent out for comment, the public will have 60 days to weigh in. Paul Bristow, 69, prostate cancer, Norton, with his wife, Kathy ● Paul has metastatic prostate cancer, which means his cancer has spread. He wasdiagnosed in August 2019. Throughout his cancer journey Paul has felt he's in greathands with his Dana-Farber care team.● The disease causes pain which has been challenging at times, especially since Paulloves to be active, even as a rider on the PMC.● This past year, his cancer was still progressing, despite previous treatments. That'swhen he learned there was a new treatment available that was just approved by theF-D-A, thanks to a clinical trial.● It's a radio-pharmaceutical, which means it is a nuclear medicine. It's a drug that isinjected and targets the radiation precisely to the tumor.● Paul was the first patient at Dana-Farber to undergo this cutting-edge treatment,going to the Chestnut Hill location to receive it.● Paul and his wife say when they learned about this new treatment option, they felthope and were thankful that Dana-Farber can offer it and appreciative of the scienceand research that made this treatment possible.● In his spare time, in addition to staying active, he loves to travel. Prostate cancer facts● Prostate cancer is the most common cancer among men (after skin cancer).● The American Cancer Society's estimates for prostate cancer in the United States for2022 are about 268,490 new cases of prostate cancer.● About 1 man in 8 will be diagnosed with prostate cancer during his lifetime.● Prostate cancer begins when cells in the prostate gland start to grow out of control.The prostate is a gland found only in males.● Almost all prostate cancers are adenocarcinomas. These cancers develop from thegland cells (the cells that make the prostate fluid that is added to the semen).● Most prostate cancers are found early, through screening. Early prostate cancerusually causes no symptoms. David Weidner, executive director of the monument and museum. “'Safety first,' is our motto.” The elevator, known as the Bradford Access Project, is designed to use a 162-ft length of double rails to bring the 3000-lb glass cab, with up to 18 people at a time, up from Bradford Street to the top of High Pole Hill, which is approximately 85-ft high, in 2 min. This elevator is the first of its size and magnitude in the Commonwealth, the source reports. The project is going through a series of pre-inspections by the Massachusetts Board of Elevator Regulations. The board regulates the construction, installation and operation of all elevators in the state. Weidner told the Engineering News Record that the addition of the conveyance is expected to boost revenue by as much as 50%. The museum has averaged up to 100,000 visitors annually. Work began in 2020 and it was intended to be operational in May 2021. A common thread that runs through diverse and successful careers in STEM, whether in the academic or corporate world, is the ability to interpret and communicate complex and data-driven topics into narratives that can inspire action at the individual, corporate, and policy levels. However, many STEM professionals still grapple with the skills and attributes they need that can help them distill complex topics which makes the work of this week’s guest, Joan Wasser Gish, incredibly crucial.  Joan Wasser Gish is an expert in translating findings from education, research, and implementation into policy and practice at scale. Twice appointed by the Governor to the Massachusetts Board of Early Education and Care, Joan helps to build systems that improve implementation and policies that make access to high-quality early education easier, particularly for low-income children across the Commonwealth of Massachusetts. She joined the Boston College Lynch School of Education in 2015 to translate research on the effective integration of comprehensive services in K-12 into a state-wide infrastructure. This infrastructure was designed to support the integration of education with social services, youth development, health, and mental health resources for Massachusetts children and families.  Joan and her team's impact has expanded beyond Massachusetts to include multiple states around the country. She has extensive experience related to educational and social domestic policies focused on low-income children and families. She's worked on these issues in a Presidential campaign and also in the United States Senate. Joan Wasser Gish says that while researchers focus on the rigor, accuracy, and integrity of their research and are able to effectively communicate and establish their credibility in the academe, that often isn’t the case when they’re presenting it to people who aren’t as familiar with the jargon and concepts that they are working on. Policymakers who want to make the best policies for their constituents aren’t so keen on learning terms that they can easily misunderstand or be confused with. What they want is an effectively and efficiently communicated narrative that they can easily grasp and turn into policy. This then is where Joan’s work is crucial: bridging the gap between research and policymaking. Essential skills and techniques for distilling complex topics For Joan, distilling complex topics for policymakers is about straightforward, accurate, and understandable translation of the relevant research. It is about refining the data they’ve found and summarizing it without losing its value, credibility, and relevance to the policy that is being pushed for and developed. This involves outlining the benefits of research for the purposes of the desired policy, as well as clearly pointing out the key points that policymakers need to focus on in the process of their policymaking. Drafting citations and providing access to ad rem reports are helpful but being able to get your point across in a succinct and comprehensible manner is even more vital. Last month's hearing on the Gateway Cities legislative caucus' neighborhood stabilization bill sparked a lot of interest. But news coverage mostly dealt with the legislation’s housing tools. The bill also includes provisions to encourage school-centered approaches to neighborhood revitalization. This week on Gateways we explore the role of schools in neighborhood stabilization with Michael Moriarty, executive director of the One Holyoke development corporation and a member of the Massachusetts Board of Elementary and Secondary Education. Ben also introduces Ashley Guerra-Agramonte, the newest member of our team. A lifelong Lawrence resident, Ashley begins the episode by sharing her perspective on the topic.

Jack first started in real estate part time while working a job he hated but paid consistently during the post 2008 recession. As a husband and father of two with giant mortgage, he stuck with (and got stuck in) a dead end job to pay the bills (and sometimes not even that) and began renting Boston apartments in his free time on nights and weekends in 2011. Renting apartments came easy to the native Bostonian who has lived in Mattapan, Beacon Hill and North End. In 2014, he founded Jack Gately Real Estate based in Boston and Sagamore Beach and later in 2014 he opened the Canal Real Estate School in Sagamore Beach. In 2016, the Canal Real Estate School was the first school to apply for and receive authorization from the Massachusetts Board of Registration to teach class online. In May 2017, Jack took a big risk and closed his brick and mortar real estate school and renamed the school the All ONLINE Real Estate Academy. It is the the first and still only Massachusetts real estate school without a brick and mortar classroom. The school is now based from Jack’s Boston office. Jack is a graduate of UMass/Boston and holds an MPA from Suffolk University.

Peter Coe talks with Andrew Chen about the math standards and shifts. Dr. Andrew Chen, president of EduTron, was on the Common Core Standards Development Team in Mathematics. Before founding EduTron he was a professor and a principal research scientist at MIT. He is on the Advisory Board of the National Council on Teacher Quality. He is on the Mathematics and Science Advisory Council for the Massachusetts Board of Education. Dr. Chen provides high quality professional development Intensive Immersion Institutes (I3) in mathematics and science to teachers at all levels. He received a PhD in physics from Columbia University.

Subsequently, she supervised medical residents at Newton-Wellesley Hospital, but she left the practice of medicine after the birth of her fifth child. In 1991, Penny became a founding trustee of the Noyce Foundation, which supports K-12 mathematics and science education across the U.S. For nine years she also helped lead a statewide effort to improve mathematics, science, and technology education in Massachusetts. Currently she serves on the Massachusetts Board of Elementary and Secondary Education. Penny is author or co-author of eight novels for children ages 9-12, including “Lost in Lexicon” and “The Ice Castle” from Scarletta Press and six books in the Galactic Academy of Science series from Tumblehome Learning. Her most recent book, this one nonfiction, is Magnificent Minds: Sixteen Pioneering Women in Science and Medicine. As co-founder of Tumblehome Learning, which publishes science mystery and adventure stories for young people, Penny serves as Tumblehome’s editor and chair.
