Business travel remains one of our largest sources of greenhouse emissions, accounting for 26% of the UK's total emissions. In an ideal world, no one would have to travel to work or events, some might even point to the way everyone adapted in COVID as a prime example of this in practice. However, for many that model of work is not feasible in the long-term. So, how can we reduce this unavoidable stream of emissions? Businesses are starting to take the right steps, however, today's guest is paving the way as a shining example of sustainable business travel and events management.   In this episode, Mel is joined by Christopher Truss, Global Sustainability Director at Reed & Mackay, to discuss their impressive existing ISO Standard portfolio and their journey towards ISO 14064 carbon verification. You'll learn ·      Who is Chris Truss? ·      Who are Reed & Mackay? ·      What are the highlights from Reed & Mackay's latest Sustainability and Responsible Business report? ·      What Standards are Reed & Mackay certified to? ·      What is the demand for sustainability within the business travel and events management sector? ·      Why get ISO 14064 verified? ·      What were the challenges with obtaining ISO 14064 verification? ·      What are the benefits of obtaining ISO 14064 Verification?   Resources ·      Reed & Mackay ·      Reed & Mackay Sustainable and Responsible Business Report 2024 ·      Carbonology   In this episode, we talk about: [02:05] Episode Summary – We welcome today's guest, Chris Truss, Global Sustainability Director at Reed & Mackay, to explore their ISO Standards portfolio and journey towards ISO 14064 verification. [02:40] Who is Chris?: Chris has had over 20 years experience in the business travel industry. He is currently responsible for driving the sustainability agenda at Reed & Mackay, which includes the development of services and solutions that their clients require to meet their own sustainability initiatives. He also manages a wide range of third-party suppliers. A lesser know fact about Chris is in a band, playing the folk fiddle and singing in pubs around Yorkshire. He also plays tennis in the over 45 category for Yorkshire! [04:50] Who are Reed & Mackay? – Reed & Mackay are a global travel management and event management business. They help clients all the way from picking up the telephone and making bookings on their behalf, helping them source appropriate venues for their events and then managing the overall spend, the supply chain and ultimately reporting back to them on what they've been up to and how they can improve their processes and save money. Reed & Mackay are highly regarded for their quality of services, especially within the professional services sector, and they proudly boast a number of large blue chip clients. [05:50] What are some of the highlights in Reed & Mackay's Sustainability and Responsible Business Report? When Chris came into his latest role, he looked to tackle two main points: ·      How can Reed & Mackay operate sustainably? ·      How can we articulate that to our clients? As a result of the work Chris has done, Reed & Mackay have signed up to the United Nations Global Compact and have aligned themselves with the UN's Sustainable Development Goals. They have also become an EcoVadis rated supplier and are undertaking their first Carbon Reduction Plan disclosure. From a corporate responsibility point of view, they have made great strides to improve their gender pay gap. They are also ensuring the integrity of their charitable partnerships. [08:00] What are some of the sustainability initiatives that Reed & Mackay have started? Reed & Mackay support a charity called 4Ocean, who are trying to remove as much plastic from our oceans as possible. They selected this charity in particular due to it's global reach, embodying the nature of Reed & Mackay's global influence in 13 countries for the past 10 years. They recognised the need to support a sustainability based charity as corporate travel is highly polluting, so this is a form of taking responsibility and looking at where they can assist to reduce environmental damage. 4Oceans also allows their employees to get involved directly, should they choose to take some time out of the office to help with ocean clean-up. [09:55] What ISO Standards are Reed & Mackay certified to? They are currently certified to: ·      ISO 27001 Information Security ·      ISO 14001 Environmental Management ·      ISO 22301 Business Continuity ·      ISO 9001 Quality Management All of which they have been certified to for over 10 years now! They acted as a foundation for Chris to drive his sustainability agenda. [11:10] How are these ISO Standards managed across the business? – Reed & Mackay have a dedicated Security and Trust team that manage all ISO certifications, in addition to their other responsibilities. All of the ISO Standards are a part of their Integrated Management System, which sits alongside their policies and procedures for the business that are managed by a central team. This has provided them with an invaluable foundation to ensure the delivery of quality services, client satisfaction and continual improvement. [12:45] What is the demand for sustainability within the business travel sector? They are receiving more requirements and requests from clients in regard to their own operational CO2 footprint, which is needed for clients own reporting requirements as Reed & Mackay would count towards many clients Scope 3 emissions. There is also a need for more transparency with carbon reporting, including the use of credible calculation methodology's. The verification of GHG emissions also gives clients more confidence that businesses are doing what they say they're doing. [14:15] What was the main driver behind Reed & Mackay gaining ISO 14064 verification?: While they felt confident in their sustainability efforts up to a certain point, they wanted someone to come in and mark their homework to make sure they were doing the right thing. With the increase in client demand for credible sustainability reporting, it was vital to pursue various CPD disclosures such as EcoVadis and prepare for upcoming legislation like CSRD. To ensure they were in the best possible shape to give the information requested by clients and other stakeholders, they needed am accurate and reliable method of verification, which is what ISO 14064 could provide. [15:40] What were the main challenges in obtaining ISO 14064 verification?: Just getting a hold of the raw data was the most difficult part, although they found it to be a very enlightening experience too. Having to dig to find the right information helped Chris to understand the business better, giving him a greater visibility on where their carbon emissions are coming from and where there are opportunities to reduce those. You have to be very tenacious to get all the necessary data. Chris highlights purchased goods and services data as particularly challenging to obtain due to its granular nature. Now they have been through this process once, they've got a system in place to make data collection a lot easier in future. [18:55] What impact has ISO 14064 verification had on Reed & Mackay?: It's helped from an internal perspective as people now have a greater visibility and understanding of the impact that have on an individual basis. This in turn creates a strong launchpad for their Net Zero strategy. From an external perspective, it's given Reed & Mackay a lot more confidence in their own processes and their ability to work with their clients towards sustainability goals. [20:00] What were the main benefits of getting ISO 14064 verified?: Giving clients, stakeholder and employees confidence: The verification calculation is reliable, and so they can be confident in relaying the facts and figures to interested parties. A great insight: The data has provided huge insights into how the business operates and where it's biggest emissions sources lie. This is vital to know before you take steps to try and reduce your current impact. Ability to create an accurate Carbon Reduction Plan: Once again, with confidence in having the correct data to hand, they are able to formulate an accurate Carbon Reduction Plan which can be realistically achieved. Anti Green-washing: Consumers are crying out for a reliable sign of credibility. Simply having an environmental policy statement may have been enough 10 years ago, but that's not the case now. People expect evidence of your sustainability claims. [21:50] Chris's top tip for anyone considering ISO 14064 verification: Just get started and don't be scared by the process. Though it may seem daunting to start, you will actually be in a much better position than when you started. Having verified data and awareness of where that data comes from and what it means on a larger scale will be vital to looking for opportunities for improvement. So, if you want to improve your sustainability, you just need to get cracking! [23:20] How are Reed & Mackay helping organisations improve the sustainability of their travel?: Reed & Mackay's ambition is to make sure that clients understand the impact of their choices at every single step of their journey. To help, they provide the carbon footprint of every booking they make, whether that be through their site or with a consultant. They also have approval processes built into their systems, which can be based on carbon. For example, if a client doesn't want to take the lowest carbon option on a particular journey, they can add required approval from an additional person within that client's organisation. So it adds a level of accountability over the choices people make. They also provide full reporting on business travel activity and where potential savings have been missed. This is a valuable tool if they need to provide travel data to carbon consultants for example, they'll already have all of those granular reports prepared. These reports will highlight where clients haven't taken the lowest carbon option, i.e. where they could travel in a group instead of individually. Reed & Mackay's intention is to make sure people have visibility of carbon alongside cost so clients can make a fair and balanced decision. Additional services include: ·      Able to set carbon budgets across a business ·      Ability to purchase carbon credits for offsetting purposes ·      Opportunities to mitigate carbon emissions through offsetting, or decarbonise through Carbon Reduction Plans over a period of time [28:50] Chris's book recommendation: His Dark Materials by Philip Pullman [29:15] Chris's favourite quote: You can't measure success if you have never failed – Steffi Graf If you would like to learn more about Reed & Mackay, and their sustainability initiatives, visit their website. Alex Schulze grew up on a small island on the west coast of Florida, where he developed a passion for the ocean through activities like surfing, diving, and fishing. He initially pursued a degree in ocean engineering but later switched to business management and entrepreneurship after realizing he preferred hands-on work over desk jobs. Inspiration: The idea for 4ocean emerged during a surf trip to Bali, where Alex and his friends were confronted with the stark reality of plastic pollution on the beaches. This experience motivated them to find a way to fund ocean cleanup efforts. Initial Concept: They created the 4ocean bracelet, made from recycled materials, with the promise that each bracelet sold would fund the removal of one pound of trash from the ocean. This model was inspired by TOMS Shoes, aiming to connect consumers with a cause. Challenges: In the early days, Alex faced skepticism from potential employees who found the idea of being paid to collect trash unusual. The initial struggle to hire local crews was compounded by limited resources and the need to learn various skills, from product sourcing to marketing. Growth and Viral Success: The business gained traction through viral videos on social media, which showcased its cleanup efforts and resonated with a broader audience. This visibility led to rapid growth, allowing them to hire more staff and expand their operations internationally. Community Focus: 4ocean emphasizes hiring local fishermen and providing them with fair wages and benefits, creating a sustainable model that supports both environmental cleanup and local economies. Alex is proud of the high retention rate among their cleanup crews. Impact: Over the years, 4ocean has successfully removed over 40 million pounds of plastic from the ocean. Alex views the organization as a legacy brand that not only addresses plastic pollution but also raises awareness and encourages community involvement. Optimism and Future Vision: Despite the overwhelming scale of the plastic crisis, Alex remains optimistic and driven. He believes in the power of action and the importance of creating a positive impact on both the environment and the communities they serve. Autumn Blum started Stream2Sea in 2015, in rural Florida. Her factory opened in 2019, just before the pandemic. She almost lost her business due to the sudden halt of orders from cruise lines and recreation, but found a creative way to save her business, and grew it even bigger (the full story is toward the end of the interview, so make sure to stick around for the epic solution! HINT: Orange peels) Stream2Sea is now the gold standard of eco-minded (and healthy) sunblock and skin products in stores, ranging from Whole Foods to the most reputable scuba dive shops around the world. It was even endorsed by Richard Branson! As an avid scuba diver -and Cosmetic Chemist- Autumn witnessed first-hand the effects of toxic sunblock (including mask anti fog and baby shampoo). She decided to do something about it. She created the only mineral based sunscreen on the planet that's been tested and proven safe for freshwater fish, saltwater fish, and coral larvae, and has passed the stringent HEL Labs Protect Land + Sea certification. Autumn takes what she does seriously, works hard, and as an absolute cherry on top, gave our crew an enthusiastic tour of the factory. Dan and Betty Orr have a new ebook titled "101 Tips for Scuba Divers". You can get it online at Apple Book Store, Amazon or wisediver.com for $9.99. The Shearwater Peregrine computer is currently on back order. The delays may last until early January 2022. Alert Diver from Divers Alert Network is combining their third and fourth quarter edition. It should be hitting the streets in mid-November. 4Ocean is cleaning up a section of Osborne Reef. In the 1970s, just off Ft. Lauderdale over two million tires were placed in the ocean to create an artificial reef. The tires are now tearing up the reefs and 4Ocean has obtained a permit to cleanup a 34 acre area just north of the reef. It is being funded by the 4Ocean Osborne Reef Bracelet. Stuart Cove is back with some new installments of Last Man Diving. Your Next Dive takes us to Pompano Beach where we do some diving with South Florida Diving Headquarters. It is easy to get to Pompano Beach by flying into Ft. Lauderdale Airport and taking a short ride to Pompano. Staying at the Sands Harbor Resort in the same marina as the dive shop. The rooms are what you'd expect for a hotel that does cater to divers. South Florida Diving Headquarters operates several boats. Be prepared to potentially go out with a partner dive boat. We did one day of diving with Scuba Tyme. The diving off of Pompano was excellent. There were some great wrecks and healthy reefs. With great visibility and warm temperatures, it was great to get back in the water. Listen to the podcast for more information on the diving operation.

In Kylies on words:I never thought that overcoming years of addiction would lead me to become a highly sought copywriter and brand storyteller in the transformation space, but it did.I co-founded a spoken word poetry venue to work on transforming my life. I found the healing I was looking for in storytelling. Not too long after, I was invited to write ads for a coaching company, even though I had no experience with ads, or formal marketing training. I used the same attention grabbing, emotionally compelling "poetry formula" to write my first ad.In one weekend the $575 ad spend converted to $67,500 - the campaign ended up with a 2000% ROI.Since then I have written ads, copy and told stories for transformational companies such as...- Conscious Marketer (clients include Sounds True, Eckhart Tolle, The Collective Trauma Summit, etc..)- Conscious Copy & Co. Handling Customer Experience During a Pandemic: Data and Personalization - 7/18/20

E-Commerce Retail Briefing

Play Episode Listen Later Jul 18, 2020 7:00

IntroductionMost things look different these days. How employees work, how we visit the doctor, even how we grocery shop. There’s no doubt the pandemic has reshaped how we operate on a daily basis. Customer experience is no exception to those changes. So how do you handle customer experience when the ultimate unexpected happens? In this second installment of Customer Experience During a Pandemic, we’ll dive into personalization and customer data.First, here are the latest headlines.Nike Announces Digitally-Focused StoreNike just announced a new digitally-focused concept store–Nike Rise. The retailer opened its first location in China, with plans to open more in 2021, according to a press release. The latest concept quote “responds to the pulse of sport in a Member’s city,” end quote. Customers will experience a "Nike By You" personalization bar with this new concept and a new app feature called Nike Experiences, that will turn their city into a quote, “digitally-enabled interactive playground”, end quote.  With digital experiences as the foundation of the new store concept, it’s clear Nike is leaning into the increasing importance of innovative omnichannel experiences. And with digital channels accounting for nearly 30% of total business in the quarter for the retailer and a shift to focus on direct to consumer purchasing in recent years, the emphasis on digital makes sense. https://www.retaildive.com/news/nike-opens-latest-store-concept-nike-rise/581404/ Uber Launches Grocery DeliveryNike’s not the only one making headlines for innovative solutions. Uber is launching U.S. grocery delivery this month, pushing into a booming market while it’s original ride-hailing model has likely taken a hit. The company will launch in Dallas and Miami, where the company recently soft-launched, before expanding to other cities. Deliveries will be handles by Cornershop workers, a grocery app acquired by Uber last year. And speaking of acquisitions, this news came just one day after Uber announced it was buying Postmates in a whopping $2.65 billion dollar deal.https://www.retaildive.com/news/uber-will-launch-us-grocery-delivery-this-month/581211/https://www.grocerydive.com/news/uber-buys-postmates-in-265b-deal/581054/ Walmart Reportedly Pushing Ahead with Prime Membership CompetitorIt’s no secret that Amazon and Walmart have been battling head to head for quite some time. The two retail and e-comm giants can almost cause whiplash with the back and forth strategy swaps and matches, like with Walmart’s rollout of one-day shipping at an eerily similar time as Amazon. But the competition may have come to a head. According to Recode, Walmart announced its Prime membership competitor back in March but had to delay the launch due to COVID. Now, according to Recode sources, the retail giant plans to push forward this month with Walmart+, a $98 dollar yearly subscription. Members would enjoy perks like same-day delivery of groceries and select merchandise, fuel discounts, and early access to product deals. While it’s too soon to predict how Walmart’s latest pushback against Amazon will fare, especially since so many of Walmart’s highest-paying customers are also Prime members, based on the company’s full-throttle strategic moves to grow its e-commerce business and further claim its authority in the competitive grocery space, I think the program could be a worthy competitor to Prime. Handling Customer Experience During a Pandemic: Data and PersonalizationCustomer data. In the digital age where privacy is a concern and transparency is key, it’s easy to go wrong. And in an environment where trust is more important than ever, it’s crucial to get it right. Collecting data is an essential element to superior online customer experiences. So what are the best practices for collecting data that’s useful without violating the trust of the very person you want to create that incredible experience for? Find your North Star. This was a golden piece of advice that Patrick Carney, the Director of Customer Service at 4Ocean, shared at the 2020 CXLife Virtual Conference. He explained that identifying your North Star, AKA the end goal or result you want to achieve, is key to knowing what data you should be collecting and how you want to use it. Because, as he puts it quote, “The first step is determining your North Star. From there, you can reverse-engineer all the data you’re trying to acquire and be able to piece that together. Step one is figuring out what is the experience you want and reverse engineering to be able to execute upon that.” end quote.Onto transparency. You had to know that was coming because any conversation about collecting data is usually followed by this word. But more than a buzz word, this should be a guiding principle when you’re approaching data. Trust is huge when you’re talking about providing a great customer experience. For lack of a better term, being shady will do the opposite of what you’re trying to achieve. Even the best of intentions without that transparent policy can work against you. KC Holiday, the founder of QALO, echoed this when he talked about collecting customer data at the Virtual Conference. He explained that when you start collecting customer data for the sake of collecting it and don’t make it clear to your customers what you’re doing with it and why, that can become a slippery slope. Truly understanding why you’re collecting data and connecting it back to how you’re crafting personalized experiences that stand out is crucial.KC went on to say that regardless of what you’re collecting now, there’s an opportunity to utilize what you currently have with the team that you already have in place in a way that improves customer experiences. That’s such an important piece of advice to take away and apply to almost everything in life. There’s an opportunity to optimize the processes you already have. You have the potential for improvement at every point in your CX strategy no matter who you are or what company you work for. Dive into what you already have and finetune how it can improve your customer’s experiences.Get creative, get innovative. ClosingThanks for tuning into today’s episode. Sink the Stink is our go to product for cleaning our neoprene wetsuits and boots. The product is based on technology developed by Bob Denton based on work he had been doing for the oil and gas industry to remove contaminants using bacteria. As an avid diver Bob realized that there was an application for using bacteria to clean wetsuits. The technology is based on good bacteria in Sink the Stink eating the bad bacteria in the neoprene that causes the bad smell. A little bit of Sink the Stink goes a long way in cleaning your gear. Check out Sink the Stink. http://sinkthestink.com 4Ocean is a global organization based on optimism with a single purpose of ending the ocean plastic crisis by cleaning the ocean and coastline and stopping the inflow of plastic by changing consumption habits. It was founded by two friends – Andrew Cooper and Alex Shulze who were disappointed with the amount of plastic they encountered on a trip to Bali. Their response was to establish a business model where they would sell bracelets and pledge to remove one pound of trash for each product purchased. It is not a non-profit organization and does not accept donation. 4Ocean is a making a difference. Find out more at https://4ocean.com The Atlantis Dive Resort in Dumaguete is located about 300 miles south of Manila – a short 1 hour flight from Manila to Dumaguete. The resort is located on a private beach in Dauin – 30 – 40 minute ride from the airport. The rooms are very nice with either a king size or two queen beds, a couch and desk. Some rooms have double sinks with a walk in shower. Toko Restaurant is where you will take your three meals featuring an ala carte breakfast followed by a blackboard menu for lunch and dinner featuring soup, salad, up to four entrees and dessert. The diving is close to the resort with 10 minute boat rides. The biodiversity is outstanding. With trips to Apo Island to see amazing coral diversity and Oslob on Cebu to snorkel with whale sharks you won't be disappointed. We are looking forward to our trip in 2021.

We live in exciting times. Nev Hyman has come up with a solution to both the global housing crisis and the current situation with plastic waste worldwide. He has set the stage for the global roll-out of his innovative method of creating building panels from all seven codes of recyclable plastics.  Nev Hyman, from Nev House, based on the Gold Coast of Australia, joins Marla today, to give us an international perspective on green ways of getting much-needed housing out into the world. Nev has been spending time in the United States, talking about his mission with Nev House and spreading the Nev House message.  Nev has been involved in the surfing industry for 45 years. He has never had a "real" job because he has only ever made surfboards and sponsored professional surfers around the world. He started two surfboard companies, Nev Future Shapes, and Bio Wire Surfboards. Bio Wire Surfboards was sold to the eleven-time world surfing champion, Kelly Slater, in 2015. Nev's passion for surfing, and traveling the world, created within him an awareness of the environment. In 1992, he started noticing that there was a lot of plastic in the ocean. He wanted to do something about it and this is how Nev House was born. Nev made the world's largest surfboard and he surfed it at Huntington Beach with 64 people on it, twice in 2015. This earned him a Guinness world record! Nev also won an event called Pitch at Palace, where he pitched to Prince Andrew in front of hundreds of people around the world in 2017. This has allowed him to meet and become pals with the royal family. This is because they love what Nev House is doing! A few weeks back, Nev attended a Go Green summit in Knoxville, Tennessee. At the summit, there was a lot of interest in Nev House, and Nev found it very easy to talk to the people there about taking the waste out of the environment and turning it into houses.  Nev House provides low-cost homes, schools, and clinics, made from unsorted and unwashed recycled plastic. There are some major issues around the recycling of plastics that have to be dealt with before creating a safe, sustainable, aesthetically pleasing, low-maintenance solution. Nev House has come up with a process that allows them to take all seven codes of plastic and create from them lightweight building panels. Most of the plastic that is recycled currently is either code 1 or 2 because the higher numbers become very difficult to recycle. A quantum shift  There's been a quantum shift recently with recycling around the world. Now is the time for people to put thought and energy into repurposing through re-design, and this is just what Nev House is doing. About seven years ago, China put out the Green Sword to stop the rest of the world from sending them contaminated plastic.  BASF, one of the largest chemical companies on the planet, has started a fund called The Alliance Against Plastic Waste, where 30 of the largest plastic companies in the world pool together 1.4 billion dollars to help innovators to come up with solutions for re-purposing plastic by re-design.  Plastic production is not going to stop. A 40% increase in plastic production is predicted for the next five years. There is not going to be enough bio-degradable plastics to replace the fossil-fuel plastics that are already in the environment, so solutions have to be found for ways to use the plastics that have already been produced to create shelter because housing is the largest market on the planet.  "The demand for affordable, rapidly deployed, low-cost, hygienic homes is beyond anyone's comprehension. It's a multi-trillion-dollar industry." The McKinsey Report, put out in 2014, was looking for the best solution to the affordable housing crisis that the planet is facing right now. The report stated that there are currently more than 250-million displaced people needing shelter. "We're taking the seven codes of plastic and turning it into a modular design that can be built in a day, or two days. Category 5, or Hurricane 5 rated, earthquake resistant, flood-resistant homes that are culturally-correct in their design, to suit whatever culture the homes can be delivered to." "Plastic is not evil. The improper disposal of plastic is." "We can't live without plastic. If we didn't have plastic, we wouldn't have humanity the way it is now, good or bad." How can you take co-mingled plastic and turn it into panels for housing? A co-mingled mass of plastics cannot be recycled by normal recycling processes like extrusion, intrusion, injection molding, or roto-molding, all of which require pure polymer. Different plastics melt at different rates, so if you try to melt different plastics together, some of them will burn before the others begin to melt. At Nev House, they use a technique with molds and layers of different plastics with bioplastics on the surface, to create panels for housing. This is called "encapsulation". "We're encapsulating everything that could potentially be nasty." Nev has found a solution for the environment using proven technology which he can turnkey in six months. He can start taking the plastic waste out of local communities anywhere on the planet and make things happen fast! Cities have been offering to pay Nev good money to take care of their waste because they know that it would cost them a similar amount to take their waste to a landfill. How can we all individually help? Support companies like 4Ocean and POP. Nev House has set up a program called POP which is a plastic offset program that will allow multinational companies like Nestle and Coke to fund recycling plants. In 2 short years, 4ocean has gained incredible traction and created massive international impact. Its social audience has grown to over 3 million and the company has removed almost 7 million pounds of plastic worldwide. How have they scaled so quickly you might ask? Well Andrew and Alex work their asses off for one, but what's perhaps more compelling is their unique business model. To fund the massive international cleanup efforts, 4ocean sells recycled bracelets and other reusable products. For every unit sold, they remove a pound of plastic from the ocean. Jessica and Dana discuss the magic of adult sleep away camp and their experiences at Camp Improv Utopia, a non profit who gives money back to arts communities in need while providing a creative, safe and inclusive environment for performers from around the world through a weekend of camping, activities and master classes.  How did Dana swing a private boat tour while teaching on the east coast? Dana hates abbreviations, so why does she refer to them as abreevs?  Jessica shares some of her arts and crafts creations, or as she loves to tell Dana "A's and C's."  Dana shares her intense disdain for tomatoes, whereas Jessica can't get enough of them.  Weird food combinations and food of the 80's stir up quite a tizzy in these two.  Jessica wants to know why strangers sometimes can't take a social cue when entering an important conversation that has nothing to do with them. The ladies introduce "Accent Corner" as they take a stab at Jamaican phrases from a book recently given to Jessica.  You think Dana goes nuts that Jessica remembers the Weirdo of the Week song?  Wait until you hear her sing all 50 states in alphabetical order.  Shame on You Corner leads us to highlight the hero and not the charlatan.  How would you feel if a burglar broke in and deep cleaned your home, Dana and Jessica would be fine with it.  Raves this week include "Unseen Art," bringing a 3D version of masterpiece art work to the blind.  Thanks to a listener for sharing 4Ocean, a group responsible for removing millions of pounds of trash from the ocean through the sale of their recycled material bracelets.  Unseen Art - https://www.facebook.com/unseenartproject/ 4Ocean - https://4ocean.com/

Welcome to the Oceanriders Podcast: conversations with entrepreneurs, creatives, thinkers and dreamers who happen to be surfers. Today my guest is all four of them : her name is Eve Isambourg and she is a stunning, brilliant and inspiring young woman from Mauritius. At only 19, she created a movement to raise awareness about the importance of ocean conservation. This May, while she was sitting her second year college exams at Sciences Po Paris, she created the "I Speak Blue Too" campaign that went viral. In this episode, Eve tells us her story, and shares her experience of creating and leading an activist campaign in favor of our oceans. We discuss what it takes to dive into the world of activism, how social media plays a great part and what you learn on the way.  Eve is an accomplished surfer, a model, working as an ambassador for brands who share her values, a blogger, a yoga and zumba teacher, and an ocean activist. She is a warrior fighting for freedom of women, surfing and ocean conservation. In this episode, Eve tells us her story, and shares her experience of creating and leading an activist campaign that went viral for World Ocean Day in June. At a tipping point in history for our climate and our planet, we discuss what it takes to dive into the world of activism, how social media plays a great part, how to get your voice picked-up by super famous NGOs (such as 4Ocean, Surfrider and Oceana), and what you learn on the way. Eve has taken her movement one step further and shares with us some key elements of the I Speak Blue Too report that can be downloaded and shared here. You can find out here how to be a part of the I Speak Blue Too campaign here, as the campaign is still running. If there is anything to take from this episode, it's the fact that anything is possible as long as you believe in yourself, your values and that you have something to say. Just take action like Eve and don't have any expectations, it's all a learning curve. Eve shares her experience into what it takes to become a brand ambassador (it's easier than you think) as she proudly represents Rip Curl Europe, Savage Clothing, Making Waves Clothing and Belle et Toile. Eve tells us the story of her most epic surf trip to Scar Reef in Sumbawa Indonesia, and you'll find out some interesting info on where to go surfing in Mauritius (avoid the posh hotels and the white sandy beaches and you'll fall in love with the clean reefs of Tamarin). My apologies for the sound on Eve's end. I thought that it would be a good idea for Eve to record outside, but it turns out we can hear the chirping of birds, dog barks (and sometimes the neighbors). Lesson learned folks ;) If you want to find out more on Eve Isambourg, you can find everything we discussed in the show notes of the episode. You can find them on your listening device (iTunes or Stitcher), on my website www.theoceanriderspodcast.com or on Medium.com where I publish all my episodes too (look for Imi Barneaud or The Oceanriders Podcast). Talking about dream jobs, since the episode was recorded, Eve's I Speak Blue Too campaign earned her a place on the Peace Boat that took a bunch of young activists on a transatlantic adventure from Stockholm to the icebergs of Greenland and then on to New York where she held a talk in front of leaders at United Nations!!! When having to chose between getting a job or making jobs, Eve is clearly on the path to making many many jobs. Her #ISpeakBlueToo campaign also earned her a collaboration with an exclusive range of T-Shirts distributed by Savage Clothing You can find all the things we mentioned in this episode in the show notes of your app or on my website www.theoceanriderspodcast.com and on medium.com To connect with Eve, the best place to start is Instagram. She changed her instagram handle this summer, you can look her up @theecoblogger and I really recommend joining her 5000+ followers to get daily inspiration on eco-activism. You can find her articles on her blog www.sharewitheveisambourg.wordpress.com and on her YouTube channel and also on the magazine she collaborates with www.immersion.surf At one point in the conversation, we mention the ONG Bye Bye Plastic Bags, you can find out more about them on Instagram and on their Facebook Page. Thank you ever so much Eve for being such an awesome guest. I hope you enjoy the episode as much as I did recording it. In the meantime, take care, have fun and enjoy the waves! Ciao!

The wait is over! After a little summer break we’re back with a brand new episode. And I'm 100% sure that it’s going to switch on your inner light and belief in the good people in this world! What do you think: How can something so simple as a tiny sun-shaped solar lamp the impact the lives of billions of people ? Why can micro-entrepreneurship in sub-Saharan Africa be much more powerful than financial aid? How can anyone of us leverage the connections we have to be part of something that matters? And how can we keep up our flame of motivation when things get tough? That’s just a mini-preview of all the inspiration bombs Felix drops in this episode. Extremely proud to present you another Berlin-based certified B-Corp with a fascinating story. If you haven’t heard of it yet, Little Sun (@ilovelittlesun) is a social business spreading clean, affordable solar energy around the globe. Little Sun has also won a competition by the United Nations Development Program for access to clean energy in Senegal, launched the Little Sun Foundation and - an image that can hardly be topped in beauty - brought together artists, musicians, and activists in New York in the eve of COP23 to urge policymakers and political leaders to join the fight for climate action. Imagine 2,800 people holding up Little Sun’s, creating a collective work of art that stands for a solar-powered sunrise….. I loved chatting to Felix - he has such a bright personality, is full of integrity, radiates genuine excitement for the opportunities we have & adds exactly the right dose of humour to things - which I find is SO important to really move the needle forward and tackle the big problems out there.
