This week on CounterSpin: New York Times columnist Thomas Friedman's December 17 piece, headlined “How Elon Musk and Taylor Swift Can Resolve US-China Relations,” contained some choice Friedmanisms, like: “More Americans might get a better feel for what is going on there if they simply went and ordered room service at their hotel.” We'll talk about China trade policy with Dean Baker, co-founder and senior economist at the Center for Economic and Policy Research. Plus Janine Jackson takes a quick look back at press coverage of Luigi Mangione. The post Dean Baker on China Trade Policy appeared first on KPFA.
A short film from documentary maker Giorgio Angelini. It's about Luigi Mangione — but it's also, really, about everything in America right now."I finished making this video essay a couple of days before the fires took over wide swaths of Los Angeles, where I live. And while it might not seem directly connected—the assassination of a healthcare CEO and wildfires ravaging LA — after walking through the wreckage of the Altadena fire to survey the damage of my friend's home, I couldn't help but feel all of it was endemic. American carnage. We have lived through forty-plus years of a culture built on abject greed. We've constructed a national ego that has rewarded this individual greed, all at the expense of the collective. We've built a perverted moral armature that not only excuses this greed, but convinces us that it is somehow innate or unavoidable. Or that it is good, even.It is not. It is a choice. And it is a choice we can no longer make. Like so many in our city, I've been overwhelmed with emotions. Not only witnessing the unimaginable destruction, but also a feckless regime of entrenched private interests masquerading as public service.I've also seen the best of humanity. Dedicated first responders working tirelessly to prevent further tragedy under unimaginable conditions. I've seen communities come together to offer support. And then I've seen opportunists, offering emergency housing at ludicrous prices. It's going to take a long time to rebuild from here. But also, in this effort there is an opportunity, a choice we must make about what we actually want to build for the future.More totems to individualism?More American carnage?Or do we build community? Real community. Built on a radically reimagined moral grounding, where we recognize our responsibilities to one another. And take up that responsibility with enthusiasm, pride, and generosity." More Americans today than two decades ago rate their hobbies as “extremely” or “very important” to them, according to a recent Gallup Poll. From Johns Hopkins medical expert Dr. Marty Makary, the New York Times-bestselling author of The Price We Pay-an eye-opening look at the medical groupthink that has led to public harm, and what you need to know about your health. More Americans have peanut allergies today than at any point in history. Why? In 2000, the American Academy of Pediatrics issued a strict recommendation that parents avoid giving their children peanut products until they're three years old. Getting the science perfectly backward, triggering intolerance with lack of early exposure, the US now leads the world in peanut allergies-and this misinformation is still rearing its head today. How could the experts have gotten it so wrong? Dr. Marty Makary asks, Could it be that many modern-day health crises have been caused by the hubris of the medical establishment? Experts said for decades that opioids were not addictive, igniting the opioid crisis. They refused menopausal women hormone replacement therapy, causing unnecessary suffering. They demonized natural fat in foods, driving Americans to processed carbohydrates as obesity rates soared. They told citizens that there are no downsides to antibiotics and prescribed them liberally, causing a drug-resistant bacteria crisis. When modern medicine issues recommendations based on good scientific studies, it shines. Conversely, when modern medicine is interpreted through the harsh lens of opinion and edict, it can mold beliefs that harm patients and stunt research for decades. In Blind Spots, Dr. Makary explores the latest research on critical topics ranging from the microbiome to childbirth to nutrition and longevity and more, revealing the biggest blind spots of modern medicine and tackling the most urgent yet unsung issues in our $4.5 trillion health care ecosystem. The path to medical mishaps can be absurd, entertaining, and jaw-dropping-but the truth is essential to our health.Become a supporter of this podcast: https://www.spreaker.com/podcast/arroe-collins-unplugged-totally-uncut--994165/support.

We trusted the media, the DOJ, the criminal justice system, and so on, only to find out that we've been bamboozled. 5 assassination teams going after Trump. This is a setup to make us believe the Iranians want Trump taken out. The Democrats want Trump taken out, because they CAN'T BEAT HIM! What did I tell you? First, the zeal over Harris is a fake. Democrats milked this as far as they could but now the “talk” of the media is Harris' lack of depth. This leads to the inevitable psychological issue I brought up weeks ago: you must KNOW someone to care about them. Many Leftists are beginning to dull on Harris and rightfully so. Who do you want leading this nation?... Now the BIGGER issue is with the cabal. They don't care what the people want, as they want what they want. Period. So how do they convince Americans and the world that Harris is the duly elected president. Consider how bad things went with Biden. How they covered up a massive election theft in 2020 that will one day be the subject of history. When it is revealed how the greatest country on Earth allowed a mental midget to run it for four years. How will the cabal put in a black female version, only Harris is FAR more incompetent than Biden. Consider that thought for just a moment. Biden, as bonehead and braindead as he is, remains more capable than Harris.Become a supporter of this podcast: https://www.spreaker.com/podcast/the-kevin-jackson-show--2896352/support.

From Johns Hopkins medical expert Dr. Marty Makary, the New York Times-bestselling author of 'The Price We Pay'-an eye-opening look at the medical groupthink that has led to public harm, and what you need to know about your health. Listen to his conversation with Michael about "Blind Spots: When Medicine Gets It Wrong, and What It Means for Our Health." Original air date 26 September 2024. The book was published on 17 September 2024.
More Americans in 2024 are taking on a ‘no-buy challenge,' according to the Associated Press. They're pledging for at least a year to purchase only essential items to curb impulse spending, reduce credit card debt or become more environmentally conscious. We hear from someone who's taken on the challenge and the impact it's had on her, and we explore why we're tempted to overspend in the first place. Have you attempted a ‘no buy challenge?' Guests: Adriana Morga, reporter covering financial literacy and personal finance, Associated Press Aparna Labroo, professor of marketing and consumer psychologist, Kellogg School of Management, Northwestern University; co-editor of the Journal of Consumer Psychology Elysia Berman, creative director and content creator, @elysiaberman on TikTok
Could it be that many modern-day health crises have been caused by the hubris of the medical establishment? Experts said for decades that opioids were not addictive, igniting the opioid crisis. They demonized natural fat in foods, driving Americans to processed carbohydrates as obesity rates soared. These failures of medical groupthink have been seen throughout history. Philosophers of the 16th century who claimed that blood circulated throughout the body (instead of resting in a layer below the epidermis) faced capital punishment. James Lind, who discovered that Vitamin C prevented scurvy, was ignored for 40 years. Ignaz Semmelweis was rejected by the medical community for suggesting that doctors should perhaps wash their hands before operating on patients.Today's guest is Marty Makary, author of “Blind Spots: When Medicine Gets It Wrong, and What it Means for Our Health.” We see how when modern medicine issues recommendations based on good scientific studies, it shines. Conversely, when medicine is interpreted through the harsh lens of opinion and edict, it can mold beliefs that harm patients and stunt research for decades.

Syracuse University communications professor and former Emmy award-winning ESPN producer Dennis Deninger ("The Football Game That Changed America: How the NFL Created a National Holiday") joins the show to take us through the origin story and unlikely sociological trajectory of the Super Bowl - pro football's annual championship extravaganza that morphed from uncertain beginnings during the late 1960s AFL-NFL merger into one of America's dominant cultural touchstones. From the book's dust jacket: The Super Bowl has changed what was just another wintry Sunday into America's unofficial holiday. It's the biggest entertainment event of the year. It's the most important advertising event of the year. It is the biggest gambling event of the year. More Americans watch this game than vote in presidential elections. How did this all happen? In "The Football Game That Changed America," Dennis Deninger reveals how the Super Bowl went from almost being canceled after its first two years to becoming an ingrained part of American life. He tells the story of how this colossal event came to be—including the challenges, stumbles, and amusing surprises along the way—and details the game's incredible impact well beyond the sports world, touching virtually every facet of life in the United States. + + + SUPPORT THE SHOW: Buy Us a Coffee: https://ko-fi.com/goodseatsstillavailable "Good Seats" Show & Defunct Team Merch: http://tee.pub/lic/RdiDZzQeHSY SPONSOR THANKS: Royal Retros (promo code: SEATS): https://www.503-sports.com?aff=2 Old School Shirts.com (promo code: GOODSEATS) https://oldschoolshirts.com/goodseats READ EARLY AND OFTEN: The Football Game That Changed America: How the NFL Created a National Holiday (2024): https://amzn.to/4cRKGhn FIND AND FOLLOW: Website: https://goodseatsstillavailable.com/ X/Twitter: https://twitter.com/GoodSeatsStill Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/goodseatsstillavailable/ Threads: https://www.threads.net/@goodseatsstillavailable Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/GoodSeatsStillAvailable/ YouTube: https://www.youtube.com/@goodseatsstillavailable

It's Thursday, August 15th, A.D. 2024. This is The Worldview in 5 Minutes heard at www.TheWorldview.com. I'm Adam McManus. (Adam@TheWorldview.com) By Jonathan Clark Nigerian Muslims killed 50 Christians Last Thursday, Fulani Muslim herdsmen, alongside a criminal gang, attacked a village in central Nigeria, killing at least 50 Christians. Morning Star News noted that “Christian leaders in Nigeria have said they believe the herdsmen attacks on Christian communities in Nigeria's Middle Belt are inspired by their desire to forcefully take over Christians' lands and impose Islam as the growing desert has made it difficult for them to sustain their herds.” Nigeria is the deadliest place in the world for Christians. 80% of Iranians don't like Islamic government An anonymous internal poll found 80% of people in Iran would prefer a democratic government to the current Islamic regime. Many are also leaving Islam. About 50,000 of Iran's 75,000 mosques have closed. As Islam loses followers in Iran, many are turning to Christianity. An estimated one million Muslims have turned to Jesus. Don Shenk, executive director of The Tide Ministry, told CBN News this is happening across the Muslim world. SHENK: “We get responses from listeners who say, now I understand that God loves me. I always thought that God wanted to punish me. There's an awakening that's taking place across the Muslim world.” Micah 4:2 says, “Many nations shall come and say, ‘Come, and let us go up to the mountain of the LORD, to the house of the God of Jacob; He will teach us His ways, and we shall walk in His paths.'” More Americans die of preventable deaths than Australia A new study published in the BMJ Open Journal found life expectancy has increased in English-speaking countries since 1990. The United States had the lowest life expectancy with 76.5 years for men and 81.5 years for women. Australia had the highest life expectancy, leading the U.S. by about five years for men and four years for women. Professor Jessica Ho was a senior researcher for the study. She said of America, “Our younger people die at higher rates from largely preventable causes of death, like drug overdose, car accidents and homicide.” Inflation is slowing Yesterday, the U.S. Labor Department reported inflation is slowing. Consumer prices rose just 0.2% from June to July. Year over year, prices rose 2.9% in July, down from 3% in June. Most of the inflation was due to rising housing costs like rental prices. Economists expect the Federal Reserve will begin cutting interest rates in September if inflation continues to slow. Donald Trump debates Kamala Harris on September 10 ANNOUNCER: “Ladies and gentlemen. Welcome to the main event. Let's get ready to rumble!” On September 10th, Donald Trump will debate Kamala Harris on ABC. Leading up to the November 5th presidential election, the former president said he wants to debate the vice president several more times on other outlets as well. The latest poll average from Real Clear Politics has Trump and Kamala neck and neck with Kamala holding a 1.1% lead. Seven states considering pro-abortion amendments on ballot Voters will not only be choosing a new president in November, they'll also be considering abortion amendments in multiple states. This week, Arizona and Missouri announced they will have amendments on the ballot to make killing unborn babies a constitutional right. Other states that will have abortion amendments on the ballot include Colorado, Florida, Maryland, Nevada, and South Dakota. Multiple states have already passed such amendments like California, Kansas, Kentucky, Michigan, Montana, Ohio, and Vermont. Bible translated for Wayuu people in Columbia And finally, the Bible Society of Colombia recently presented its first complete Bible in the Wayuunaiki language. The translation work took about 13 years. The Wayuu people are one of Colombia's largest indigenous people groups, numbering about 400,000. Five hundred representatives of the community attended the Bible presentation. Alexander Gómez with the Colombian Bible Society said, “It is a great satisfaction for us because we are aware that there are going to be transformations at a personal, community and socio-cultural level. The Wayuu brothers and sisters who hear the word of God in the language of their heart will be left with the love of God.” Isaiah 52:7 says, “How beautiful upon the mountains are the feet of him who brings good news, who proclaims peace, who brings glad tidings of good things, who proclaims salvation, who says to Zion, ‘Your God reigns!'” Close And that's The Worldview in 5 Minutes on this Thursday, August 15th, in the year of our Lord 2024. Vice President Harris and former President Trump have hit the campaign trail, appearing in key swing states such as Georgia, Wisconsin and Pennsylvania as the race heats up. The two have worked to distinguish themselves to voters, with the former President attacking Vice President Harris' more liberal record, and Vice President Harris calling the former President a ‘threat to democracy'. Overseas, Israel is facing increased threats by Iran after they eliminated Hamas' political leader. House Majority Whip Tom Emmer (R-MN) joins the Rundown to discuss the Iranian threats, his predictions for the 2024 election, and what the Republican agenda will be if they retain the House. More Americans are choosing not to have children, and the country is starting to feel the economic impact. A new Pew Research study shows that one-in-five adults over fifty haven't had kids, and nearly half of U.S. adults under fifty don't want to. One major reason for their decision is that many people cannot afford it, with one child costing an average of 233,000 dollars during the first 18 years of their life. Moody's chief economist Mark Zandi joins to break down the financial pressures young Americans face, why a population decline will negatively impact the United States, and how corporations need to adapt to the trend. It's been about four years since the great remote work experiment took off for many employees who work computer-bound jobs. After plenty of back and forth between return-to-office mandates and work-from-home advocates, neither side really won. Data from the Bureau of Labor Statistics shows that the share of Americans doing some or all of their work from home has leveled off to about 35%. On the show today, The New York Times’ Emma Goldberg explains who’s working from home these days and how it’s impacting both employees and their bosses. Plus, the commercial real estate question looms large over the remote work debate. Then, we’ll get into why the Joe Biden administration’s new protections for workers in extreme heat could be threatened by recent Supreme Court rulings and a potential second Trump presidency. And, the CEO of GS1, the company administering retail barcodes, didn’t see the QR code takeover coming.
