Dolly Card is here to streamline expense management, tax, and accounting. dollycard.com* Beyond stoked for this crucial convo with two producers with films that premiered at SXSW who pivoted from other careers into producing. We had a lot of fun while also contemplating how we can leverage our collective knowledge to solve some of the crises plaguing the producers' plight.  Spoiler alert: We 100% got nachos after. Elle Roth-Brunet, producer of I REALLY LOVE MY HUSBAND, sits at the intersection of innovation, business, and storytelling. She's a content strategist, brand builder, and creative producer who deeply believes in the power of representation and storytelling.  She has dedicated her career to helping 40+ underrepresented voices gain more equity in entertainment through content partnerships with Hello Sunshine, ARRAY, Paul Fieg's Powderkeg, the PGA, Women In Film, and the Black List.  Mark Ankner, producer of SLANTED, which won the grand jury award for Narrative Feature at SXSW, is dedicated to developing and producing creator-driven stories that resonate with culture.  He was instrumental at Endeavor Content, overseeing advisory business, film and television packaging and sales, and creating innovative distribution models for content creators and financiers. Prior to that, Mark was a partner at WME Global, focusing on emerging voices and building companies for established talent. Some notable film projects include the Academy Award-winning CALL ME BY YOUR NAME, FRUITVALE STATION and SORRY TO BOTHER YOU. His first film PONYBOI premiered in the US Dramatic competition at the 2024 Sundance Film Festival. Directed by Esteban Arango, it was noted for its groundbreaking narrative and representation of diverse voices. Welcome to day three of our SXSW Film Festival coverage, and we've got four films that are certain to spark a greater conversation about the state of our country, government, and world as a whole. The feature documentary Shouting Down Midnight follows then Texas Senator Wendy Davis' filibuster of SB5 in 2013 that sparked a whole new generation of activists in the fight for women's reproductive freedom. We spoke with director Gretchen Stoeltje about why she felt compelled to tell this story, how she got connected with Wendy Davis, and why the next generation of activists gives her hope for the future. In the short documentary Video Visit, we're introduced to a Brooklyn Public Library program that offers free video calls to those incarcerated and their loved ones. Director Malika Zouhali-Worrall explains how she found out about the program, how communicating with loved ones in prison has become a booming private business (PRISONS SHOULD NOT BE FOR PROFIT!), and the importance and impact of public libraries. Tomorrow's Hope: The Promise of Early Childhood Education is a documentary that follows the passionate educators and kids and their families on the south side of Chicago, who were determined to make it despite the struggles of living in what was at the time, the largest housing project in the world. We were joined by producers Tamra Raven and Aaron Steinberg who shared how they chose which kids they were going to follow, why it's important to invest not just in the kids, but their parents, and the trials and tribulations of producing a film with a lot of archival footage (and which producer may have worked harder than the other).Shadow is a narrative feature about a group of activists that hold a public meeting to discuss human rights, sexual politics, and the  dominance of artificial intelligence. We spoke with director Bruce Gladwin and actor/co-writer Scott Price about this film being born from Australia's Back to Back Theater, what a difference it makes to have a script written by the cast, and the humor that was peppered throughout a film that covers a lot of heavy topics. Thanks to our friends over at Lost Republic for sponsoring our SXSW 2022 coverage, and for being The Official Whiskey of The Bitch Talk Podcast... visit them at their website, www.LostRepub.comYou can follow the film Shouting Down Midnight on IG & Twitter & FBYou can follow director Gretchen Stoeltje on FBYou can follow director Malika Zouhali-Worrall on IG & TwitterYou can follow the film Tomorrow's Hope on IG & Twitter & FBYou can follow actor writer/actor Scott Price on IG & Twitter & YT & TikTok--Thanks for listening and for your support! We're ending our coverage of the Slamdance film festival with two films that take you on an unexpected journey, and leave you asking, "What the fuck?". Director Taylor Thompson and actor Brian DeMarco join us for an insightful conversation about the reality of our filthy inner monologues, the creation of this character- both on paper and on camera, and behind the scenes reactions from passers by as they were filming. For the narrative feature Snow White Dies at the End, director/writer Kristijan Risteski artfully interweaves three different storylines (and timelines) into one, and explains how the film-despite it's twists and turns, is really just about the good in people. He shares one of his favorite scenes to write, what he would like people to learn about his homeland (and where the film is shot), Macedonia, and what he means by the term "farting backwards".You can follow director Taylor Thompson on IG You can follow Snow White Dies at the End on IG & Twitter & FB & Vimeo--Thanks for listening and for your support! Welcome to  Slamdance 2022! This film festival typically runs alongside  Sundance in Park City, Utah, and proudly states it's made "for filmmakers, by filmmakers". And we're kicking off our coverage with two films that show how family life can be both complicated and rewarding. And the cherry on top is- they're both festival winners! Hannah Ha Ha won the Grand Jury Award for best narrative feature, and the Acting Award for Hannah Lee Thompson, and Iron Family won the Audience Award for best documentary feature. The narrative feature Hannah Ha Ha follows a woman living at home with her father, struggling between what makes her happy, and her brother's pressure to be something she is not. We (virtually) sat down with co-directors and writers Jordan Tetewsky and Joshua Pikovsky, producer/talent Roger Mancusi, producer Emily Freire, and the award winner herself, Hannah Lee Thompson, to explain how they worked through last minute changes to the cast, filming during a pandemic, and finding the perfect tone to the story. In the documentary Iron Family, we meet Jazmine Faries, a woman with Down syndrome who is obsessed with Matthew McConaughey and soap operas. For the past five years, she has written a screenplay that her family performs for their small town in Iron River, Michigan. This film gives us a front row seat into the preparation and production of her sixth play. I hear a lot of that, I hear a lot of that in Christian entertainment and I certainly hear a lot of that in some of the faith-based films that are out there, but that's just not my experience.   “My experience is that life doesn't work, that I can't make it work, that I do need a Savior and that is the intersection that I'm interested in, in films that tell that real story, and sometimes the gritty, raw, hard story, of what it feels like to be human on this earth, in this broken place we live in.” Peterson serves on the Narrative Feature jury for the Nashville Film Festival and is the creator of the Justice Film Festival, an emerging film festival that takes place in New York City that has been shining a light on social justice since 2012. He is a graduate of Taylor University and has lived in Nashville for 25 years with his wife Becky. They have three children.

Director Justin Chon and actors Tiffany Chu, Octavio Pizano, and Teddy Lee discuss their new film MS. PURPLE with moderator SuChin Pak. Recorded at Landmark's NuArt Theatre on 9/6/19. SYNOPSIS: Ms. Purple, from award-winning filmmaker Justin Chon (Gook), is the poignant story of the family loyalties of an Asian American brother and sister, set in a dreamy vision of Los Angeles' Koreatown, reminiscent of Wong Kar-wai's In the Mood for Love. Kasie (Tiffany Chu) struggles to take care of her comatose father at home, refusing to put him in hospice, because he raised her and her brother when their mother abandoned them. Kasie works as a Koreatown karaoke hostess, making good money keeping obnoxious drunken businessmen happy, and is well able to handle herself, but when her father's in-home nurse quits, she is desperate. She calls her estranged brother Carey (Teddy Lee) to come home and help care for their father, and he agrees. As they reconnect over their dying father, Kasie and Carey confront the deep emotional wounds of their difficult shared past, attempting to mend their relationship. Winner, Grand Jury Prize for Narrative Feature, Dallas International Film Festival.

Other topics covered include: Camera choice, shooting minimal coverage, the importance of prep, developing a visual style, finding synergy on set, workflow issues, handling creative problems in production, and much more. The downing of a Russian warplane over Syria is further proof, if any were still needed, that news of the end of the protracted war there is premature. It also underscores the changing nature of the conflict, and its turn in a dangerous new direction. It's been confirmed, Major Roman Filipov's Su-25 fighter was brought down by a MANPAD, or portable anti-aircraft missile system, reportedly fired by members of Jabhat al-Nusra. It's a sophisticated piece of equipment not easily gotten, so just where it came from, and how al-Nusra ended up with it are the burning questions of the moment. John Helmer is a long-time, Moscow-based journalist, author, and essayist whose website, Dances with Bears is the only Russian-based news bureau “independent of single national or commercial ties.” He's also a former political science professor who's served as an advisor to governments on three continents, and regularly lectures on Russian topics. Helmer's book titles include: ‘Uncovering Russia,' ‘Urbanman: The Psychology of Urban Survival,' ‘Bringing the War Home: The American Soldier in Vietnam and After,' and ‘Drugs and Minority Oppression', among others. John Helmer in the first half. And; the Victoria Film Festival continues this week through Sunday, when it will feature Canadian director, Stephen Campanelli's 'Indian Horse'. The full-length feature recently took the Calgary Film Festival's Audience Award for Narrative Feature, and was named the People's Choice winner at last year's Vancouver International Film Festival. It's an adaptation of the Richard Wagamese's widely acclaimed novel about Ojibway boy, Saul Indian Horse's abduction into Canada's residential school system. Campanelli is a long-time Hollywood camera operator, working within legendary actor/director and producer, Clint Eastwood's rarefied filmmaking circle. Among others, he's collaborated with Eastwood on the films: 'Million Dollar Baby'. 'Gran Torino', 'Sully', and their latest, and 21st collaboration, '15:17 to Paris'. Indian Horse is his second film in the director's chair, following 2015's 'Momentum'. Stephen Campanelli and breaking the tormented silence of Canada's residential school survivors. And; Victoria-based greentrepreneur and horticulturalist extraordinaire, Christina Nikolic will be here at the bottom of the hour with the Left Coast Events Bulletin bringing us up to speed with some of the good things going on in and around our town in the coming week. NFS Writer Oakley Anderson-Moore talks with the talented artists behind Felix & Paul studios, one of the leading VR production companies in the film world. The cinematic quality that is a hallmark of their projects is very uncommon in these rudimentary days of VR. Virtual reality has been excelling in the realm of documentary because exhibiting an immersive experience of a location goes almost hand in hand with that genre. With narrative VR, however, it’s been a harder nut to crack. How do you create a character arc in a 360 environment where viewers can look anywhere they want at any moment? It’s a challenge Felix & Paul take head on in their film "Miyubi," the story of a 1980s toy robot through whose eyes we watch a family grow up as he grows obsolete.
