Formed in Brooklyn, New York, in 1989, by the enigmatic and charismatic Peter Steele (vocals, bass), along with Josh Silver (keyboards), Kenny Hickey (guitar), and Sal Abruscato (drums), Type O Negative emerged as a groundbreaking force in the world of dark and subversive metal.Type O Negative's music defies easy categorization, blending elements of gothic, doom, and industrial metal with a healthy dose of black humor. Their sound is a sonic tapestry of haunting melodies, crushing riffs, and deep, baritone vocals—Peter Steele's signature voice being one of the most recognizable and distinctive in the metal world. The band's debut album, "Slow, Deep and Hard," released in 1991, set the stage for their unique brand of metal. Songs like "Unsuccessfully Coping with the Natural Beauty of Infidelity" and "Xero Tolerance" explored themes of heartbreak, nihilism, and misanthropy, with a heavy dose of sarcasm. The album was an unapologetic foray into the darkest corners of the human psyche, setting a precedent for the band's future work.Type O Negative's sophomore release, "Bloody Kisses" (1993), catapulted them to international acclaim. This album is often considered their magnum opus, blending elements of gothic romance with gloomy atmospheres. The hit single "Black No. 1 (Little Miss Scare-All)" became an anthem, capturing the hearts of goth and metal fans alike. With tracks like "Christian Woman" and "Too Late: Frozen," the album showcased Type O Negative's ability to craft both heavy and melodic songs. One of the band's defining features was their sense of humor and subversive approach to their music and image. Peter Steele's witty and often self-deprecating lyrics provided a stark contrast to the brooding music, making Type O Negative a band that could be simultaneously dark and tongue-in-cheek. Their cover of Seals and Crofts' "Summer Breeze" on "Bloody Kisses" became a beloved fan favorite, showcasing their ability to infuse humor into unexpected places. In 1996, they released "October Rust," an album that further solidified their status as pioneers of dark metal. This record featured tracks like "Love You to Death" and "My Girlfriend's Girlfriend," showcasing their versatility in creating music that ranged from melancholic ballads to raucous anthems.Tragedy struck in 2010 when Peter Steele passed away, leaving a void in the music world that could never be filled. The loss of such a singular talent was deeply felt by fans and fellow musicians alike. His towering presence and darkly charismatic persona were central to Type O Negative's identity.Type O Negative'This episode is sponsored by www.betterhelp.com/TheBarn and presented to you by The Barn Media Group.

In 1931 George S. Schuyler (1895-1977) published his novel Black No More: Being an account of the strange and wonderful workings of science in the land of the free, A.D. 1933-1940. It's a satirical romp that takes up the race obsessions of various constituencies in the United States in the early part of the twentieth century. The book is deeply funny and the humor is meant to provoke some serious thought about the costs and consequences of the racialist thinking that Schuyler thought infected all corners of social and political thought in the United States. Before taking up the novel, we discuss Schuyler's career as a journalist, novelist and social commentator. Our conversation highlights many of Schuyler's satirical targets and we consider the novel's particular relevance to today's discourse on race. As Schuyler once wrote in a column for the Pittsburgh Courier: “Personally, I am only interested in getting our folks thinking all around the problems confronting them rather than following blindly our two-by-four leaders. Get people to thinking and they will work out their own salvation.” Our guest is Jennifer Delton, Professor of History at Skidmore College. She holds a PhD in History from Princeton University and teaches courses in United States history since the Civil War.  Her work focuses on liberalism, race and ethnicity, civil rights, and business in twentieth century. She is the author of four books, including, most recently, The Industrialists: How the National Association of Manufacturers Shaped American Capitalism (Princeton UP, 2020).

Arrangement in Grey and Black No. 1. portrays an iconic mother and a Victorian Mona Lisa. These are only two of the many takes on this ultra famous painting. It's more well known by the colloquial name Whistler's Mother. That's because he did this portrait of his mother, Anna McNeill Whistler. Though many say Anna looks much older in this portrayal, she was only 67 when he painted this. Though, many say Anna looks much older in this portrayal. At the time she was living with her son and adjusting to his bohemian lifestyle. Anna called it "flamboyant" and made a weak attempt to tolerate it. We can see how adept she was at tolerance from the look on her strident face. We learned a lot of new fun facts about this painting with wisegest. We bring twenty new trivia questions for you to answer like: The time needed for a planet to make one complete rotation on its axis is called a what? Who was the first US President to travel to Europe while in office? In what Italian city did the Renaissance begin? Which medieval philosopher fused the ideas of Aristotle with the teachings of the Christian Church? Which Latin term, probably well-known to Superman and Batman, means "another self?" Be it a wheel, tiller or joystick, what is the term for any equipment associated with the steering of a boat or ship? Better Read than Dead: Literature from a Left Perspective

Friend of the pod, cultural critic, and Northwestern University professor of African American literature Lauren Michele Jackson joins us for our discussion of George Schuyler’s Black No More (1931). If you’ve ever wondered what it’s like to read a wacky-ass novel written by a socialist-turned-right-wing nut, have we got the one for you. Schuyler’s novel takes up the story of what might happen if there were a machine that turned black people white (extra-white, in fact) and how various social and political actors would handle it. Spoiler: the KKK doesn’t handle it great. We discuss the terms/objects of satire and whether Schuyler was mostly just being a dick when he wrote this, the notion of the “grift” or confidence scheme, and how the novel puts pressure on “race” as a series of concepts. We read the Penguin edition with an introduction by Danzy Senna. For more context on Schuyler and his contentious relationship with other black writers of the 1920s and ‘30s, you can read Schuyler’s essay “The Negro-Art Hokum” and Langston Hughes’s response, “The Negro Artist and the Racial Mountain.” And, of course, we highly recommend Lauren’s White Negroes: When Cornrows Were in Vogue… and Other Thoughts on Cultural Appropriation, published by Beacon Press. Our guest speaker, Kiema talks about her experience living in South Korea, and the effect colorism has on South Korea and East Asia as a whole. Is colorism a thing in asian communities? Kiema discusses her experience as a teacher while using that opportunity to positively influence her students. We also analyze the problem of colorism in media such as the Disney channel, Coco Jones vs. Zendaya, interracial representation in film (ie; Issa Rae and Kumail Nanjiani from Love Birds) and lastly how to solve this issue. TR!BE is a socially conscious and black owned brand positioned to lift up black culture through voice and thought. Deciding to confront the deaths of his parents only months apart from each other, A.B., to cope with his grief, dedicated himself to writing a poem for each week of 2016, his first year without his parents. From birthdays, holidays and anniversaries, to the waves of social strife, upheaval and tragedy affecting the world, A.B. recounts his thoughts and feelings throughout the year, and what is birthed from such a gut-wrenching endeavor is a story about grieving, an exploration of what comes afterward, and ultimately, a beautiful written and heartfelt book of poetry.
