I recently spoke with Dave Walker of Walker Prep (formerly Quiz Hacker). In our conversation, Dave shared: Why high-cost “name brand” test prep may not provide the return on investment that parents and students should expect. Why one-on-one boutique test prep may provide better results, but still may not be necessary for the entire test prep process. Why budget test prep often doesn't produce the results that students need. Why a “hybrid approach” may be the best approach to test prep for many families. Some timelines for the Class of 2025 and 2026 regarding test prep. You can connect with Dave by visiting WalkerTestPrep.com or by emailing Dave at Dave@WalkerTestPrep.com. We all know there is a mental health crisis out there. We have real numbers that highlight elevated rates of anxiety and depression for kids, teenagers, people of color, men, working mothers. The numbers tell the story. The percentages, increases, and statistical significance are all important. Everywhere we go, we are surrounded by data, as are our children. Their GPA's, instagram likes, rebounds, SAT Scores, tardies, goals, and more, are all measured and highlighted. “What is measured gets done.” The data tells the story. Numbers are concrete, clear, and feel important. Yet we don't keep data on what actually counts in life. There are no decimal points for kindness, helping others, empathy, or quality of relationships. And because there is no data to be analyzed for these qualities in this numbers-crazed world, we have learned not to value the qualities that make us healthy and whole. No wonder there is a mental health crisis. Let's have a closer look at this in today's episode! We always love hearing from you, so don't be shy, come over to our Facebook or Instagram and let us know what you thought about today's episode! Ps. Do you love listening to our podcast? In part 2 of our conversation with Mrs. Filios, we dive deep into SAT Scores, Letter of Recommendation, and how to have a strong relationship with your college counselor!
In this episode, our host Thomas Caleel is diving into some common questions about college admissions and applications this time of year. Want to submit a question? Send us a DM on Instagram @admittedlypodcast or email us at hello@thomascaleel.com Question 1: What SAT or ACT score do I need? Standardized testing requirements have evolved, especially after COVID. Many schools now consider a holistic approach to admissions, seeking to increase diversity and offer opportunities for students to present themselves in the best light. For some, taking the test may help bolster their academics, while for others, it could demonstrate their capabilities during challenging times. There's no specific score requirement for all schools. Look at the schools you're interested in and check their admissions statistics to understand their average LSAT and ACT scores. Be realistic about where you stand academically and what the data show for each school. Question 2: What are Legacy Admissions? Legacy admissions refer to the practice of considering applicants who have family members, like parents or siblings, who attended the same school. While some institutions still consider legacy status, many are moving away from it, focusing on merit and diversity instead. There are excellent schools that don't factor in legacy, so consider your options carefully. Question 3: What should I write about in my Common App essay? When crafting your Common App essay, avoid clichés and dig deep to find your unique voice. Show the admissions committee your strategy and what you want to convey about yourself. Avoid reading too many sample essays, as it can influence your writing and prevent you from standing out. Tell your own story, embrace your hardships, and be authentic. Question 4: Should I disclose my learning accommodations on my application? Yes, it's advisable to disclose any learning challenges or accommodations you have received in your application. Colleges want to create a welcoming environment for all students, and sharing this information can provide context to your achievements and challenges. Question 5: How can I pick a major? Selecting a major doesn't mean deciding your lifelong career. Think about the classes you excel in and enjoy the most. Consider your passions and what subjects you want to explore further. Research majors at your desired schools and find a good fit that aligns with your interests. About Thomas Caleel Thomas is an alumnus of the University of Pennsylvania. Idaho ranked #40 for SAT scores in 2022. Nate Shelman asks: Does this bother you? This conversation moved into the question: What is there for the younger generation to discover or develop? The bill that would have allowed parents to teach their children how to drive was vetoed by Governor Little. The most interesting thing about that is that after that veto more than a dozen Idaho Representatives changed their yes votes to no so there was no longer a veto proof majority. What are your thoughts? Another bill became law today. The Clean Slate Act seals a non-violent, non-sexual misdemeanor from someone's record if they have not committed any crimes in at least five years since that offense. Is this a good idea or bad idea? Kyle Stedman (@kstedman) reads the bad idea "SAT Scores Are Useful for Placing Students in Writing Courses," by Kristen di Gennaro. It's a chapter first published in Bad Ideas about Writing, which was edited by Cheryl E. Ball (@s2ceball) and Drew M. Loewe (@drewloewe). The College Metropolis Podcast: College Admissions Talk for High School Students and Parents
#071 - One of the most important things you will do in high school, is to make a list of colleges to which you will apply. Making that list will be a challenging exercise because there are a great many colleges and universities from which to choose. Although they all share some characteristics, they are also very different in many other important ways. It is important that you recognize the elements of a college or university that are important to you. On episodes 10, 11, 13, and 14, we shared with you the questions to ask about every college, so that, at the end, you are left with the ones that meet your needs in terms of location, academics, campus culture, and cost of attendance, among other factors. On this episode, Jankel and I talk about the 5 pages on every college or university website, that you should look at to see if a school appears to meet your needs. Although this is not the only activity you will do to see if a school is a good match for you, exploring these 5 pages will allow you begin your list of schools in an efficient way. These 5 pages will quickly help you realize whether that school has what you need, or not. One of the 5 pages will also help you understand how well you compare to the most recent freshman class admitted to that school. It will allow you to see the average GPA, SAT or ACT scores, class rankings, and financial aid received, for those students admitted to that school directly from high school. During the episode, we share with you the important information we found in those 5 pages within the Cornell University website. We believe that after listening to this episode, you will appreciate the wealth of information found within these pages, and be very well prepared to begin your list of colleges. You can access the show notes for this episode at https://collegemetropolis.com/71. You can help our show greatly by giving us a 5-star rating and leaving us a positive review on the podcast platform you used to download this episode. Thank you!
