Welcome to another powerful episode of The Hot Dish. This one delves deep into the past and present of untold stories from America's heartland, from the historical injustices faced by Native communities to the contemporary heroes fighting fires without pay.Of course, Heidi and Joel begin by reviewing the shocking results of the 2024 elections, and the failure of the Democratic Party to communicate effectively with a majority of American voters. Then, we sit down with Donovan Archambault, a tribal leader and author whose new book offers an eye-opening account of life at a government-backed Indian school in the 1950s. Drawing from his own experiences and those of his community, Donovan reveals that approximately 90% of his fictional book is based on actual events. Listeners will learn about the harsh realities faced by Native American children, including abuse and cultural erasure. He emphasizes the importance of advocating and reclaiming Indigenous cultural values to foster societal healing.Next, we shift our focus to an inspiring piece of documentary filmmaking with Pete Yoakum, who discusses his project "Odd Hours, No Pay, Cool Hat." This documentary highlights the lives of volunteer firefighters in rural America, shedding light on their bravery and dedication despite minimal recognition and compensation. Pete reveals his journey, from conception to the challenges of filming during the COVID-19 pandemic, and the incredible support he received from communities. You'll gain insights into the diverse stories of volunteer first responders and the evolving role of women in firefighting.Tune in every other week for The Hot Dish, where we serve up hearty conversations that resonate with every corner of the country. To learn more, visit https://onecountryproject.orgFor a copy of Tatanga Hōksheen: A Failed Attempt to Kill The Indian by Donovan Archambault, Sr, you can find it in many booksellers including Praire Edge: https://prairieedge.com/all-products/katanga-hoksheen-a-failed-attempt-to-kill-the-indian-book/?srsltid=AfmBOoqyD3HW2XGQMkPB6XwJpVg0Qqm5xd8UwbudbIocHoa4F89R5kKz or Barnes and Noble: https://www.barnesandnoble.com/w/tatanga-h-333-ksheen-donovan-archambault-sr/1145828386 For local listings and more info on the documentary, visit the official "Odd Hours, No Pay, Cool Hat" website: https://oddhoursfilm.com/

Deep, rhythmic sounds… rumbling through space and time are the hallmark of Spanish producer Absis, and his productions that range from Ambient, to Techno and beyond. The talents are ever so showcased with every release, and DJ mix that he publishes. Ever so smooth, and refined, a musical journey that is expertly crafted with restraint and gravitas. Unsurprisingly we look to Joachim Spieths' Affin label as his latest foray would be the second released on the German label. Silent Voices, the title track starts off with heavy, thudding kicks as dark pads swirl mysteriously around, setting the tone for the duration of the track. Accompanying the percussive elements are disembodied, wispy voices that beg for attention yet give no heed to their inner meanings. Overall there is a feeling of growing anticipation. That change in the night from the blissful beginnings to those of an energetic night ahead, with each kick bringing you closer to the crescendo ahead. Silent Voices, and in turn the rest of the release will be out on Affin, the 5th of July. @absismusic @affin www.instagram.com/absis_music/ www.instagram.com/affinltd/ Follow us on social media: @itsdelayed linktr.ee/delayed www.itsdelayed.com www.facebook.com/itsdelayed www.instagram.com/_____delayed/ www.youtube.com/@_____delayed

Our guest today is Jean Sachs, Chief Executive Officer of Living Beyond Breast Cancer, who's overseen and grown the impact of LBBC for nearly three decades. She joined LBBC in 1996 as its first Executive Director and was named CEO in 2008. During that time, LBBC has become a national force in breast cancer patient support and action. Jean's focus on inclusivity, whether by race, age, geographic location, gender, has meant that LBBC is among the most welcoming patient-focused nonprofit organizations in the United States. And for people living with metastatic breast cancer, LBBC has become synonymous with that most-important quality: Community. That's because LBBC's annual Conference on Metastatic Breast Cancer is one of the largest, if not the largest, gatherings for women and men living with MBC. This year's attendance expectations are for 500 in-person and 1500 virtual! The conference began in 2006 and this year LBBC breaks the rules again by making the conference fully hybrid, with one full day of only virtual workshops and gatherings, followed by a weekend of simultaneous fully virtual and in-person conversations, lectures, exhibitor booths, and opportunities to connect both online and in-person.Happening from April 26 to the 30th, LBBC's annual conference on metastatic breast cancer brings in experts like Nancy Lin, Don Dizon, Kelly Grosklags, Kimberly Curseen, and more. But, as Jean herself shares, the connections formed in virtual chat rooms and in-person are also part of its history. The LBBC MBC Conference is the birthplace of MetUp, the site of Hear My Voice advocacy training (alums include Julia Maues, Janice Cowden, and Terlisa Sheppard), and where lasting connections that shape how we talk about MBC are formed. We are so delighted to have Jean with us to talk about Living Beyond Breast Cancer and this year's conference.Sprinkled throughout the episode are the voices of our patient advocate friends Stephanie Walker, Terlisa Sheppard, and Kate Pfitzer.Look for more information about  LBBC hereTo register for the 2023 LBBC MBC Conference click hereMore info about the show and past episodes is available on our website: www.ourmbclife.orgGot something to share? From being kidnapped in Mexico for his human rights work, to advising the largest organizations across the world and allying with the Union of Indigenous Yagé Medics of the Colombian Amazon and advocating for indigenous movements, Ricardo Vitale has had an extraordinary path. As a self-defined 'liberation anthropologist', based in Colombia. He earned a PhD from Cambridge University with a thesis about the Zapatista movement in Chiapas, Mexico.  His expertise covers human rights, anthropology in armed conflict, social movements, indigenous politics, gender relations within social movements, sustainable development, resilience, climate change adaptations and indigenous practices of yagé medicine, spirituality, and resistance. He is a former adviser of a plethora of international humanitarian and development bodies such as: Oxfam America, the UNHCR, the Norwegian Refugee Council, ICG and GIZ, amongst others. Since 2016 Riccardo works as a full-time adviser for the Union of Indigenous Yagé Medics of the Colombian Amazon (UMIYAC).  His tasks within UMIYAC range from fundraising to advocacy, to capacity strengthening, and non-extractive (“the-other-way-around”) anthropological research, aimed at “reinforcing indigenous communities, rather than taking from them”. In this episode, we expand the conversation around plant medicine conservation and include the context of the symbiotic relationship between people, sacred territories, land, community, culture, and that there are people that are facing extinction who also hold knowledge. And when those cultures go extinct. Loss of knowledge is embedded in that. Part of supporting plant medicine conservation is supporting biocultural diversity. Not because we want to ensure that we can replant what we need to consume to ensure our future needs are met. But because we actually want to live in a world where indigenous peoples can be living on the land that is their birthright. Managing the damaged relations between Russia and the West have escalated new heights, due to the Ukraine invasion of February 24. The ongoing Ukraine conflict is invariably portrayed by Western powers and the political media establishment, as one of Russia being the sole aggressor. Deteriorating ties are also blamed on the authoritarian policies pursued by President Vladimir Putin. However, the West has played a significant role in eroding this relationship, ever since the collapse of the Soviet Union in 1991 by ignoring Russian policy concerns and attempting to take advantage of Russian weakness during that critical period. Recent action by western powers, aimed at targeting Russia through economic sanctions, have not only created major problems for itself, such as a looming energy crisis but have made any diplomatic solution, to the ongoing military tragedy in Ukraine increasingly unlikely. This episode lifts the lid on the origins of the current Ukraine conflict by first visiting the source of the problem, the end of the Cold War; But also provides a detailed context behind the escalation of hostilities between Russia and the US. This critical juncture during 1989-1990 marked, not only the transformation of a new international system, but also the genesis of the Ukraine war. An important aspect of US policy towards Russia, in the years following the collapse of the Soviet Union, was its tacit aim to contain the new Russia and ensure it could not successfully re-impose its influence across Eastern Europe. This was primarily carried out through the eastern expansion policy of both NATO and the EU, with its desired aim of edging closer towards legitimate spheres of Russian influence. Initially, Moscow tolerated this process by focusing its efforts on gaining political acceptance by the West and integrating into its economic institutions but this policy eventually faced rebuttal, due to the emergence of Vladimir Putin at the turn of the century. Ultimately the US—Russia relationship is defined by a fundamental dilemma of security interests. To expand on this point, I introduce the viewpoints of two eminent scholars on Russia studies and international relations, who both argue that most of the blame for the Ukraine conflict, lies with the US and its European allies, citing Washington's policy of unilateralism, after the end of the Cold War and also its wholesale disregard of Russian national interests. I explain how the eastern expansion of NATO began, and the political rationale used to justify it, using Professor John Mearsheimer's theory of “offensive realism.” Also how, the Ukraine crisis was eventually kindled, using Mearsheimer's argument of the “West's triple approach” namely, NATO enlargement, EU expansion and Democracy promotion. In the final section, I provide an assessment of the internal vulnerabilities and geo-political perspectives which shape the dynamics of great powers, thus helping to explain the current Ukraine conflict.

In this episode of Out of the Archives, "Silent Voices Among Us: Stories from Chicago's Henry Horner Homes," which named after our online exhibition of the same name, we share stories from residents of the Henry Horner Homes, known to many of its residents as the Hornets. The stories range from different experiences from the early years of the Henry Horner Homes to moving out during their demolition. A special thanks to the storytellers from this episode, including Crystal Palmer, Marina Pullom, Patricia Smith, John Pettiford, Sharon Leggitt, and Maria Moon. We'd also like to thank the members of the Museum's Oral History Corps and other oral historians who recorded these stories including Francesco De Salvatore, Raymond McDonald, and Maria Moon. The Henry Horner Homes were constructed between 1957 and 1959 and contained 920 units. Thousands of residents lived in the Henry Horner Homes between 1957 and 1995 when demolition began. The demolition ran in phases beginning in 1995 until 2008, which made way for the Westhaven mixed-income community, which was established in 1997. The stories in this episode span from 1962 to 2013. Download Episode!   My guest for episode #8 is Sharon Pearce, the founder and executive director of Silent Voices Pregnancy Care Center.  I reached out to Sharon when I shared my story of having had an abortion at our annual women's conference several years ago and then had several women come to me silently via texts and email to thank me for sharing my story and to share their stories with me. I reached out to her to be able to refer some for follow-up who need more counseling. Then a few months ago a saw Sharon at a ministry event and asked her to be on the podcast. During our chat, Sharon shared her story of working in the abortion industry and how that affected her to the point of a mental breakdown, and how God in His mercy healed her and lead her to start Silent Voices to help women make the decision to keep their babies. Sharon's mission is to help women make the decision to keep their babies and to support them through motherhood, and bring healing to those women who have had abortions. Maybe you've never had an abortion but you've experienced God's grace giving you beauty for the ashes of something you've been through. Maybe you know someone who's had an abortion. If so, would you please share this podcast with them. Either way, I'm sure as always that you will see a little of yourself in Sharon story of God's love, acceptance, and beauty shaping her identity and the way she lives out her faith. What Silent Voices Offers: Silent Voices offers a host of confidential services including free pregnancy tests, counseling and loving support to women facing unplanned or crisis pregnancies who often feel pressured to have an abortion throughout their pregnancies. Silent Voices has two support groups - Bridges to Motherhood for any woman who is either pregnant or has recently had a baby, who is looking for support, friendship and assistance and Post Abortion Healing & Recovery Group which is done as a weekend experience, plus Bible Studies. They also offer sex, pregnancy, and abortion education, natural family planning, as well as help and counseling for those women who choose to have abortions.     Sharon's Motto/Verse: "Sing, O barren one, who did not bear; break forth into singing and cry aloud, you who have not been in labor! For the children of the desolate one will be more than the children of her who is married,” says the Lord." The Mindset Mountain Podcast

Silent Voices…. Have you ever wanted to speak the truth, (your truth), from the heart….but fear what will follow? Silence screams the truth….and the truth of ‘fear' can be overpowering. Many of us have done it….are doing it….or have just gotten through it. I began reading for the fifth or sixth time, “He-Motions: Even Strong Men Struggle“~~T.D. Jakes. The beginning of this book describes how many men have not been taught not to….or how many of us don't know how to let out our screams. Now the point of this is this….. Are you frustrated, hurt, or in pain of some sort, but due to the way you've been brought up, the fear of judgement of others, or the fear of criticism keeps you from releasing your words and emotions? I know I've had that happen to me several times….and still do at times. In the online marketing world, there are many of you who've been doubted….questioned….and even ridiculed for even thinking of going a direction which is new to the world, despite the successes some are having. Jason passionately shares his experiences on this in last week's EPISODE! In 2013 I went to a marketing event in Las Vegas, called NO EXCUSES SUMMIT! This was a huge event for online marketers who were having major success, to beginning their success, as well as someone like myself who was there to find direction in the world of marketing. Standing outside the door, waiting on the last day to get into the event, I spoke with a woman who was waiting with me. I had just met her and shared how I have a major voice and interest in the topic of suicide. This was a connection we made, and her attempts were going to be to help me to get to Salt Lake City, Utah to speak on the topic. Two weeks later, I received a call that she had lost her son to suicide, and wanted me to speak at his funeral…..Here is the STORY!! When we choose to speak, you might just be amazed what may come…..it may have nothing to do with you…..but it might just help you serve others by pursuing a vision! Now listen in….. ~~Eddie The post Silent Voices appeared first on .

Show #89, Hour 2 | Guest: Robert L. Okin, MD | Show Summary: We avert our eyes when we meet them on the street: homeless mentally ill people with their hand-scrawled signs, shopping carts, and cardboard boxes. Because of our fear and revulsion, we fail to see any human connection with them. How do they end up on the street? How do they survive? What combination of biological vulnerabilities, childhood traumas, drugs, mental disorders, and financial devastation brought them down? And how do some manage, against all odds, to climb out of this desperate situation? Former commissioner of mental health Robert Okin spent two years on the street meeting and photographing homeless individuals with mental illness to find answers to these questions. He masterfully brings these people to life through stories and images that are intimate and gritty. Robert L. Okin, MD, was born in the Bronx, New York. He attended college and medical school at the University of Chicago, and after a psychiatric residency at the Albert Einstein College of Medicine in New York City, he spent two years at the National Institute of Mental Health. He’s a founding member of the board of advisors of Mental Disability Rights International (MDRI). Dr. Okin was chief of service of the San Francisco General Hospital Department of Psychiatry; professor of clinical psychiatry at the University of California, San Francisco; and vice chair of the University of California, San Francisco, School of Medicine’s Department of Psychiatry.
