I dug through the archives and found this old essay I wrote many years ago about Lucid Dreaming, and thought I'd share it on the podcast for all of you to listen to, as I realized I haven't shared any new podcasts in a while. Lucid dreaming represents a powerful state of consciousness where the dreamer becomes aware they are dreaming and can sometimes influence the unfolding dream narrative. This capability opens doors to extraordinary dimensions, serving as an inspiration for artists and as a tool for personal and spiritual exploration. It echoes the limitless possibilities seen in stories like The Matrix, where reality is malleable and deeply interconnected with our perceptions and beliefs.Lucid dreaming allows us to tap into our subconscious in ways that can directly benefit our waking lives. It's been shown that this altered state can enhance creativity, problem-solving, and emotional processing, giving us tools to better navigate challenges we face in our day-to-day lives. For instance, Dr. Stephen LaBerge, a pioneer in lucid dream research, has demonstrated how athletes, artists, and musicians can practice skills in their dreams to improve performance when awake. His research suggests that the brain cannot distinguish between the actions taken in dreams and those in reality, meaning you can enhance your abilities while you sleep. This means that the actions taken in a lucid dream, for example practicing an instrument, affect the brain the same way as if you were practicing the instrument while awake. (citation) His book, Exploring the World of Lucid Dreaming, co-written with Howard Rheingold, provides a comprehensive guide to understanding and harnessing the power of lucid dreams.I hope you'll enjoy this podcast!

A “State Of The Union” Look At Lucid Dreaming With Neuroscientist Benjamin Baird [#40]

Join neuroscientist Benjamin Baird for a “state of the union” look at lucid dreaming in the scientific community. Is this a good time for a young scientist to pursue the study of lucid dreaming?  If so, what's the best way to go about that? After sharing his personal story about studying consciousness via lucid dreaming, the conversation turns to a brief but deep dive into the nature of reality, and the explanatory power of idealism (it's all mind) vs. materialism (it's all matter). Naïve realism and the mistake of representationalism take center stage, followed by a look at Ben's study on meditators having more lucid dreams. What is the role of meditation in cultivating lucidity? How feasible is it to find a magic bullet for inducing lucidity, by either targeting sweet spots in the brain through pharmacological means (galantamine), or transcranial electrical stimulation? Based on another study he conducted with Stephen LaBerge, Ben shares his tips for the use of galantamine. Is it scientifically accurate to profess that lucid dreamers are leading the edge of human evolution? The conversation then turns to the radical study Dr. Baird is currently undertaking: trying to substantiate the claim of lucidity in deep dreamless sleep. If proven, this study would revolutionize the mind sciences. You will quickly see why Ben is one of the leading voices in the scientific community currently studying the nocturnal practices.Dr. Benjamin Baird is a research scientist at the Center for Sleep and Consciousness at the University of Wisconsin - Madison specializing in the study of human cognition and consciousness. His work uses a range of behavioral and cognitive neuroscience methods, including electrophysiology and neuroimaging techniques. His areas of research include internally generated thought and perception, such as mind-wandering and dreaming, self-awareness and metacognition, and the neurobiology of consciousness. He also has a particular long-standing interest in the phenomenon of lucid dreaming, which he has focused on in his recent research.

Howard wrote his first article studying virtual communities 1987. Yes, 1987. That's before the official internet and long before anything that resembled what we know of today as social media. In 2012 he authored the book, Net Smart; How to Thrive Online, which laid out 5 essential literacies for users of digital communication and networks. He’s got a ton of great insights and perspectives on our current situation with Facebook and Google and Youtube. He’s hopeful it seems, and he doesn’t bash the tech itself. Rather, he tries to empower its users to see it for what it is, and to make the most of it. It means a lot to me, I’m so grateful. So much good stuff coming up. Stay tuned! The About Section from Howard’s Website reads as follows “I fell into the computer realm from the typewriter dimension in 1981, then plugged my computer into my telephone in 1983 and got sucked into the net. In earlier years, my interest in the powers of the human mind led to Higher Creativity (1984), written with Willis Harman, Talking Tech(1982) and The Cognitive Connection (1986) with Howard Levine, Excursions to the Far Side of the Mind: A Book of Memes (1988),Exploring the World of Lucid Dreaming (1990), with Stephen LaBerge, and They Have A Word For It: A Lighthearted Lexicon of Untranslatable Words and Phrases.(1988). I ventured further into the territory where minds meet technology through the subject of computers as mind-amplifiers and wrote Tools for Thought: The History and Future of Mind-Amplifiers (1984). Next, Virtual Reality (1991)chronicled my odyssey in the world of artificial experience, from simulated battlefields in Hawaii to robotics laboratories in Tokyo, garage inventors in Great Britain, and simulation engineers in the south of France. In 1994, I was one of the principal architects and the first Executive Editor of HotWired. I quit after launch, because I wanted something more like a jam session than a magazine. In 1996, I founded and, with the help of a crew of 15, launched Electric Minds. Electric Minds was named one of the ten best web sites of 1996 by Time magazine and was acquired by Durand Communications in 1997. My 2002 book, Smart Mobs, was acclaimed as a prescient forecast of the always-on era. In 2005, I taught a course at Stanford University on A Literacy of Cooperation, part of a long-term investigation of cooperation and collective action that I have undertaken in partnership with the Institute for the Future. The Cooperation Commons is the site of our ongoing investigation of cooperation and collective action. The TED talk I delivered about “Way New Collaboration” has been viewed more than 265,000 times. In 2008, I was a winner in MacArthur Foundation’s Digital Media and Learning competition and used my award to work with a developer to create a free and open source social media classroom. I have a YouTube channel that covers a range of subjects. Most recently, I’ve been concentrating on learning and teaching 21st Century literacies. I’ve blogged about this subject for SFGate, have been interviewed, and have presented talks on the subject. I was invited to deliver the 2012 Regents’ Lecture at University of California, Berkeley. I also teach online courses through Rheingold U. My latest book, Net Smart: How to Thrive Online, published in 2012, was reviewed in Science.”

Night Club Podcast | Lucid Dreaming & Dream Yoga

This is a 30 minute preview. To listen to the full interview - and get all of our premium content - join Night Club: Lucid Dreaming & Dream Yoga Community! For the full interview: ⭐ nightclub.andrewholecek.com/interviews/stephen-laberge Join Andrew and esteemed researcher Stephen LaBerge in a rare live interview conducted at the Sedona lucid dreaming retreat, October 2019. This is an unusual interview because Stephen seldom does interviews; it was conducted in front of 50 wonderful participants; and the conversation has a warm-up, or preview. Andrew had prepared a set of questions for Stephen (submitted to Stephen the evening before) that dealt mostly with the science of lucid dreaming. But all those questions fell away as Dr. LaBerge gave his last brief talk at the event, part of which is now included as the prelude to the interview. In other words, Stephen's concluding comments at the retreat changed the tenor of the originally designed interview, which now became entirely spontaneous and more personal. Andrew realized the direction was being changed as he sat on stage with Stephen, and started recording Stephen's talk before the interview formally began. The recording was done on a smart phone, so pardon the quality. The recording begins with Stephen addressing (as part of his talk) the question: Who am I? And who are the “others” in your dreams? This leads to a look at dream ethics, and the question: How do identity and lucidity fit together? The interview formally begins with a Big Question about mind and the universe, and Stephen harnesses the principle of complimentarity from physics to address it. “There is room for several views or maps.” Even the way a question is posed sends the mind in a particular direction. In a disarming statement from a scientist, Dr. LaBerge says that “All knowledge doesn't just come from experiments,” and acknowledges the power of an open question. The conversation then turns to the subtle body — “Is it just the subjective experience of the autonomic nervous system?” — and a look at the classic “mind-body” problem. Stephen then shares personal accounts of how his science has changed him (can science be a spiritual path?). The conversation closes with a look at lucid dreaming and its place in evolution, and the promise and peril of the internet: Does the web disseminate knowledge or “noise,” the growth of knowledge or ignorance? In this interview you will see why LaBerge is the father of lucid dreaming in the West, and a unique scientist willing to embrace the wisdom of the East. -- About Stephen LaBerge: Stephen LaBerge received his PhD in psychophysiology in 1980 from Stanford University where he studied consciousness, dreaming and waking for 25 years. He has taught classes on sleep and dreaming, psychobiology, and altered states of consciousness at Stanford, and San Francisco State University. In addition to numerous scientific articles on lucid dreaming, he has published many books on the topic, including the classics “Lucid Dreaming” and “Exploring the World of Lucid Dreaming,” which have been published into eighteen languages. Widely regarded as the father of lucid dreaming in the West, LaBerge continues his research as an independent scholar and scientist.

B. Alan Wallace joins to us to compare and contrast two fantastic dream practices. One comes from the Tibetan Buddhist tradition, going all the way back to India, with the yogi Naropa. This practice, called Dream Yoga, is a type of insight practice which utilizes the dream state in order to wake up. The other practice, called Lucid Dreaming, comes out of the pioneering research of Dr. Stephen LaBerge. Lucid dreaming breaks down the same goals that Dream Yoga aspires to, but into smaller and more attainable goals. It is also firmly grounded in the scientific method. Listen in to hear Dr. Wallace, who is authorized to teach both of these methods, discuss the similarities and differences in these two different approaches. Scott Cluthe interviews one of the world-recognized experts on lucid dreaming, Robert Waggonner. Author of Lucid Dreaming, Robert Waggoner, is past President of the International Association for the Study of Dreams (IASD) . For the past ten years, he has been the co-editor of the online magazine, The Lucid Dream Exchange, the only ongoing publication devoted specifically to lucid dreaming. Robert has a regular show on Iowa Public Radio, discussing dreams and lucid dreams. Robert frequently speaks on lucid dreaming at national and international dream conferences, workshops and college classrooms, like Sonoma State University, Iowa State University, University of Washington and Evergreen State College.  More than 30 years ago, the author taught himself a simple technique to become consciously aware in the dream state. Since that time, lucid dreaming, or the ability to become consciously aware while dreaming, has been proven by the pioneering research of Dr. Keith Hearne, University of Hull, and Dr. Stephen LaBerge at Stanford. This book shows lucid dreamers and those interested in psychology and consciousness, a new approach to investigate the actual nature of the subconscious. With fascinating lucid dream examples, thought-provoking questions and exciting techniques, this book has been hailed “a classic” by experienced lucid dreamers.

Noel Bell speaks to Robert Waggoner author of Lucid Dreaming: Gateway to the Inner Self. The interview took place at the Gateways to the Mind conference on lucid dreams which took place in London in November 2012. The event was held in the grand location of the Royal Geographical Society in Kensington. I started by asking Robert how he came to write his hugely influential book. Robert Waggoner was a speaker at the event and demonstrated how we can all benefit from the non-physical realities. Robert taught himself a simple technique to become consciously aware in the dream state. This took place over 30 years ago. Since then, lucid dreaming, or the ability to become consciously aware while dreaming, has been proven by the pioneering research of Dr Keith Hearne, University of Hull, and Dr. Stephen LaBerge, author of Exploring the World of Lucid Dreams at Stanford University. Many see lucid dreaming as an important psychological and therapeutic tool. In the interview Robert tells us how he became involved in lucid dreaming, what motivated him to write the book and how lucid dreaming can be potentially used as a treatment tool for clients with anxiety or even post traumatic stress disorder. Tonight we begin with a primer on lucid dreaming with techniques from modern oneironaut Stephen LaBerge and dream yoga from the Indo-Tibetan tradition. Then we proceed deeper into the practice of awareness of awareness. Alan reiterates the importance for the six prerequisites for shamatha training and describes the process of "rolling back the carpet" of the eight consciousnesses: past the five senses and the ruminating mind, past the obscured mind (manas), greeting our sense of self or "I" (ahamkara), and finally arriving at the alayavijnana. Meditation begins 34.26 Q&A 58:29 * Different practices, same shamatha? * Semantics: bhavanga versus alayavijnana. * The far side of dullness and tiredness. * Morning and night people, and entering into practice like a helicopter. * The bashful maiden as a metaphor for thoughts that vanish with the light of awareness.

This podcast starts with a microphone test; you may notice that this podcast has none of the annoying popping noises that went out in the previous episodes. And the sound quality will keep getting better as we tweak the system.Ok, enough of that! Today's afternoon practice was on Equanimity, and it was a very valuable meditation. We start as always with an excellent introduction with illustrative examples before going into the practice. After the practice we had some assorted Q&A, but before that Alan gave some great tips on Lucid Dreaming and Dream Yoga (with many references to Stephen LaBerge). The questions are on assorted topics, from practice to theory, and are very illustrative. Enjoy!I included this cellphone photo of yesterday's sky to aid in reflecting about impermanence! I kept looking at the sky after taking the photo and in less than 30 seconds it was completely different!
