In this episode, Louis and Fabian talk about how most of their artists cannot make a living just from streaming revenue. They share the ways they've been evolving, as a label, to elevate and lift their artists in the ever changing landscape of the new music industry. This conversation discusses the ins and outs of streaming, social media, physical sales, downloads, bandcamp, touring, patronage, community, and so much more. 00:00 - Introduction04:55 - The Mission of Ropeadope Records18:43 - Rethinking the Value of Music24:22 - Preserving Contemporary Music31:32 - Re-Educating Fans and Focusing on the Connection44:44 - The Limitations of Streaming Platforms53:29 - Exploring Alternative Models for Artist Support Subscribe to The New Music Business: https://aristake.com/new-music-business-podcast/Ari's Take Academy: https://aristakeacademy.comWatch more discussions like this: https://bit.ly/3LavMpaConnect with Ari's Take:Website: https://aristake.comInstagram: https://www.instagram.com/aristake_TikTok: https://www.tiktok.com/@aris.takeX: https://twitter.com/ArisTakeThreads: https://www.threads.net/@aristake_YouTube: https://www.youtube.com/user/aristake1Connect with Ari Herstand:Website: https://ariherstand.comInstagram: https://instagram.com/ariherstandX: https://twitter.com/ariherstandYouTube: https://youtube.com/ariherstandConnect with Ropeadope Records:Website: https://ropeadope.com/Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/ropeadope/Bandcamp: https://ropeadope.bandcamp.com/X: https://x.com/ropeadopeYouTube: https://www.youtube.com/ropeadope99Edited and mixed by Ari DavidsMusic by Brassroots DistrictProduced by the team at Ari's Take Hosted on Acast. "Solo Journeys in India: Navigating the Transport Tapestry via tuk-tuks, trains and planes….” Welcome to Dr. Mary Travelbest's 5 Steps to Solo Travel Guide for women like you who need extra support traveling the world (slowly), one woman at a time. Please rate this podcast and the Amazon book series, especially Part B on Destinations! I've been traveling solo since 1972 and writing about it since 1993. Now you can experience the Top Selling Book Series: 5 Steps to Solo Travel, a Woman's Guide to Travel and Destinations in Her Prime, found on Amazon. I recently took a 90-day trip around the world, and this is a special episode on Indian transportation for the solo female. What are the challenges faced by solo female travelers in India? How can they navigate the transportation system in India? What are the travel tips for exploring India's transport networks as a solo female traveler? This particular podcast edition is about the "Roads Less Traveled, including a few Solo Female Travel Tips for Exploring India's Transport Networks" There was a massive train crash while I was in India, and many people were tragically killed. The people I was staying with had friends on those trains, but they were ok. Many of my family members contacted me across the miles to see if I was ok, as it was world news. See the show notes for more on train accidents. https://www.indiatvnews.com/news/india/yearender-2023-tragic-accidents-in-2023-road-rail-accidents-odisha-coromandel-express-andhra-pradesh-train-collision-tragedy-latest-updates-2023-12-22-908419 The world's largest populated country has transportation challenges. Corruption, bureaucracy, and red tape are also issues. Corrupted officials leverage their control over permits to line their pockets. Income equality is massive. The wealthiest 10% makes up almost 60% of India's income. The future looks brighter. One airline, Go First, went out of business after I bought my ticket in May 2023. I cannot get a refund because the airline is bankrupt and, therefore, will not honor any purchases of their flights, nor will the ticket agency through which I bought it. https://www.hindustantimes.com/business/go-first-gets-two-financial-bids-as-part-of-its-bankruptcy-process-101708754354934.html I arrived in Chennai from a flight originating in Cambodia and transferred through Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia. I spent 8 hours in the airport, talking to people from all over the world. Here is a rundown of the travel I did over two weeks in six cities in India. When going through airport security, you must be on an all-female line. Men and women are not allowed to go through together. The same thing happened when I went to the Taj Majal. Separate security stations were established, and I even hit my head on that going through, as I am 5' 10', so I am taller than most other women. Overall, I made many transportation mistakes, but they were all to help you make a better trip next time. My travel mistakes in India: I was lied to by a taxi driver, had a driver with no shoes and no change, got scammed in the main Delhi train station, and had trouble finding a bus to Agra.

APEX Express is a weekly magazine-style radio show featuring the voices and stories of Asians and Pacific Islanders from all corners of our community. The show is produced by a collective of media makers, deejays, and activists. Intimate Sounds of the Four Continents Episode #2 Intimate Sounds of the Four Continents combines Lisa Lowe's theories and music from around the world to create intellectually stimulating sonic experience. DJ Miu created this radio show with a mission to spread the message: “Freedom is Yet to Come.” I encourage listeners to take the time to read, write, and resist. We require inoculations that repel the seductions of corporate servitude. Cauleen Smith told us. Starting with reading Lisa Lowe's writing. Reading is Fundamental. Episode #2 This month's episode features Thao and The Get Down, Stay Down, Star Feminine Band, Taj Majal, and Tohur Aizawa Quartet. Sounds from Cambodia, Benin, Americas, and so much more. With winter coming in the northern hemisphere, I was inspired by music that ponders, wanders, and lingers. A time of reflection of the change from mercury retrograde and the stillness in this Scorpio season and recent Scorpio eclipse and the current mars in retrograde in Gemini. All that to say, reflect on your desires, needs, and goals. Be honest, truly honest about where you are and where you want to be. Send compassion to yourself and those around you. Listen to this set and allow yourself to transmute these energies by meditation and sonic medicine. Star Feminine Band A group of 7 girls, aged between 10 and 17 years old, from Natitingou, a remote town in the north of Benin. I absolutely fell in love with the energy of their music, light and playful and deeply talented. I found their record digging in Pasadena, CA over the summer of 2022. Thao and The Get Down, Stay Down I first heard her and her band in Los Angeles for my auntie's birthday. It was a free concert and that's how my aunt convinced our whole family to go. I was 14 at the time and I didn't really connect to her music at first, my auntie did get an autograph and it was the happiest I've ever seen her. But then when the pandemic came around, I listened to Thao's tiny desk and it ignited a love for her and her music. I had spent more time learning about folk, rock music so I was able to appreciate it more and understand the depths of her music, especially during March of 2020. Geraldo Pino So I found this next track off the Nigeria Soul Power 70 Compilation album. It's got some serious gems on it and this is no exception. Pino is a Sierra Leonean Nigerian musician. He was one of the early pioneers of modern African pop music. The Charles LLoyd Quartet This was one of the “First psychedelic jazz bands” and the group was all about “Communication is the prime concern” The quartet is made up of Keith Jarret, Ron McClure, Charles Lloyd, Jack DeJohnnette. Taj Mahal Taj Mahal is a Blues musician but fuses Caribbean, Africa, India, Hawaii, and the South Pacific so naturally I had to share some of his music. I found his music crate digging as well as all good music is found by word of mouth or found hidden in a crate. Henry chose his stage name, Taj Mahal, from dreams he had about Mahatma Gandhi, India, and social tolerance. He started using the stage name in 1959 or 1961—around the same time he began attending the University of Massachusetts. He formed one of the first interracial bands back in 1964 when he moved out to Santa Monica and they released one album together before creative differences. At that time he also worked with Buddy Lee and Muddy Waters. Later in his career, he formed Hula Blues Band in Hawaii. He will be performing in Oakland if you want to check him out on December 2 and 3 at the fox theater and in Los Angeles on December 4. Tupac Tupac is famously known for his rap music and repping Los Angeles, California. Though he was born in Oakland, CA and wrote an amazing book collection of poetry called “The Rose That Grew From Concrete” that features the very first track “Wake Me When I'm Free” as well as other tales of growing up in the ghetto and his life stories. The rose is a symbol of beauty and love showing resilience in its ability to grow in the face of insurmountable odds, the concrete. Lisa Lowe's Book: In this uniquely interdisciplinary work, Lisa Lowe examines the relationships between Europe, Africa, Asia, and the Americas in the late eighteenth- and early nineteenth- centuries, exploring the links between colonialism, slavery, imperial trades and Western liberalism.

For this week’s episode of Our Nature, I chat with Vaastu Consultant Hunter Cressman. I’m guessing you’ve probably never heard of Vaastu before. I know I hadn’t until Hunter spoke about it during a vedic meditation class at the Spring Meditation Center back in June. Vaastu is the architecture of nature. It is incredibly precise and specific. It’s designed to create well-being in a space through a series of mathematical principles that are applied to determine the direction a building is facing, its measurements, the materials its made of, etc. “Each one of us, we have a fundamental frequency inside of ourselves,” says Cressman. “And what we want to do is align our frequency with the frequency of the building, so that they resonate together in harmony.”In this episode, you’ll learn the core principles of Vaastu, how it differs from Feng Shui, where to see examples of vaastu buildings, why measurements need to be within the width of a hair, how to pay tribute to the culture and people that are the originators of Vaastu, how to conceptualize and contextualize the ancient texts of Vaastu within our modern society, and how to create Vaastu energy even if you don’t have the means or desire to construct a Vaastu building. I’m so excited for you to hear about Vaastu from Hunter. I think he’s on the forefront of a new way of building and imagining our spaces and I’m thrilled to bring you this knowledge before it reaches the masses! Please enjoy my conversation with Vaastu Consultant Hunter Cressman.QUOTES:“The Veda is a body of wisdom that has been around for thousands of years. It's knowledge of nature, knowledge of our central nature as humans, and understanding our nature through practices such as meditation, yoga and ayurvedic medicine.” - Hunter Cressman“Vaastu is a series of mathematical principles that are followed in order to bring about a resonance inside of a contained space that contains qualities of well-being, so that any inhabitants in that contained space, will resonate with those qualities and benefit from the design of the space.” - Hunter Cressman“Vaastu is pure, unmanifest energy – and that pure consciousness contains all qualities of consciousness.” - Hunter Cressman“Each one of us has a fundamental frequency inside of ourselves. And what we want to do is align our frequency with the frequency of the building so that they resonate together in harmony.” - Hunter Cressman“There’s a subtle geometry to our central nature and Vaastu mimics that geometry in order to create this resonance between the two from our inner nature to the outside. Vaastu is a way of using the containment of space or architecture to awaken us from the inside out.” - Hunter CressmanRESOURCES:EP 01 of Our Nature With Ayurvedic Chef Divya AlterTen Thousand WavesBandelier National MonumentGeorgia O'Keeffe's home and studioHunter Cressman Vedic MeditationEP 04 of Our Nature With Feng Shui Expert Susan BalabanAmerican University of Mayonic Science and TechnologySHOW NOTES:The difference between vedic meditation and VaastuThe main principles of Vaastu architectureThe difference between Vaastu and VaastuHow Vaastu architecture developed from the ancient textsExamples of Vaastu Architecture - the Taj Majal and the pyramidsThe four main aspects of VaastuWhy topography is a critical factor in VaastuThe reason measuring within an inch is still not enough in a Vaastu buildThe Vaastu mandala and how it is used to create customized measuresThe difference between Feng Shui and VaastuWhat is subtle nature? Why Vaastu does’t have “cures” for energy like in Feng ShuiWhy Vaastu matters for people right nowHow we can pay tribute to the culture and people that are the originators of VaastuHow we can conceptualize and contextualize the ancient texts of Vaastu within our modern societyWhy the materials of building factors into determining the life of the Vaastu energy in the buildingWhat’s ahead for Hunter now that he graduated from the Vaastu programHow to create Vaastu energy if you don’t have the means or capacity to build a Vaastu homeThe Last 5 Questions!Connect with Hunter Cressman:Hunter’s InstagramWell Design Co.’s InstagramConnect with Alyssa and The Our Nature Podcast:Follow Our Nature on InstagramAlyssa Benjamin's InstagramGet in touch! Here are #21-30 on the list, counted down in reverse order as we discuss them on the podcast. After the previous episode of 100 Great Games, we received some (ahem) feedback regarding the games we didn’t like (I’m looking at you, Taj Majal), or didn’t know much about (such as War of the Ring). I’m pleased to say we don’t have that issue this time. I get to look over the still-secret list going all the way to Number One, and I can safely say that we’re familiar with all of the remaining games. Which is as you’d expect, right? As we get near the top we’re getting into even more of the modern classics that every self-respecting gamer should seek out & play. But, since you’re only hearing three voices from a survey of many more people, we may not all LOVE the remaining games. But we certainly respect them. (And as you’ll hear, in many cases we do love them!)We’re nearing the end, only two shows left after this one to finish the countdown! We’ve already had suggestion for a supplemental episode, and it’s under consideration. Other ideas are welcome. Finally, taking a page from Geek Weekly, I’m going to try adding a poll to each of my podcast episodes. I’d like folks to check out the blog (perhaps comment below), and there’s always a good question to pose after a podcast. Be sure to listen to the episode first, to get the context for the question. In this case, it’s about the theming (or not) in Knizia’s Lord of the Rings.
In a concert in celebration of Hispanic American Heritage Month, Agustin Lira and Alma & Quetza perform. Speaker Biography: Standing on the shoulders of giants like Lalo Guerrero, Ritchie Valens, Cannibal and The Headhunters, The Brat, Los Lobos and many others, Quetzal has created a path that has earned them the recognition as "one of Los Angeles' most important bands" (L.A. Times). Quetzal has shared the stage with a diverse list of artists such as Los Lobos, Zack de La Rocha, Ziggy Marley, Los Van Van, Taj Majal, Daara J, Ruben Blades, Fishbone, Cubanismo, Littlefeat and Ozomatli. Led by Martha Gonzalez (vocals, tarima, chekere, congas) and Quetzal Flores (jarana, requinto doble, bajosexto, electric guitar), Quetzal plays music that is as rich and complex as their pluri-ethnic barrio experience. Since 2002 Quetzal has been central in facilitating a transnational dialogue between Chicanao musicians and artists from California and Mexicano musicians and dancers from Veracruz, Mexico. Quetzal most recently completed its fifth studio album, titled Imaginaries, to be released in early 2012 on the Smithsonian Folkways label. Speaker Biography: Agustin Lira, a NEA National Heritage Fellow (2007), began his career in 1965, at the age of 19, when he co-founded the theater company El Teatro Campesino with Luis Valdez, during the Delano Grape Strike headed by Cesar Chavez. The company created songs and plays, performed at picket lines and rallies, and toured throughout the United States, demonstrating the power of artistic expression in uniting and inspiring the farmworker communities. Lira's powerful singing and socially relevant lyrics were at the heart of El Teatro Campesino and established his role as the preeminent musical voice of the early Chicano Movement. Since leaving Campesino, Lira has formed several other theater groups, composed music for films and recordings, and received numerous awards. Together with Patricia Wells Solorzano, Lira formed the musical group Alma in 1979. Alma features original compositions by Lira and is known for its mesmerizing duets, inspirational lead guitar playing by Wells, and incomparable, rhythmic bass by Ravi Knypstra. Alma blends Mexican, Latin American, American Folk and Afro-Cuban styles, creating a hybrid: Chicano music. Alma has performed throughout the United States, Mexico and Cuba, produced several recordings, and scored the music for the award-winning film documentary, "The Fight in the Fields: Cesar Chavez and the Farmworkers' Struggle."
