In his own words My purpose is to teach patients how to modify their lifestyle and diet and posture and muscular balance to feel better and have a healthier life free from chronic disease. When I was young, I was very heavy. I changed my eating to a healthier, lower fat, natural foods diet, and started exercising and I lost a lot of weight. Then when I was reaching my later teenage years, I was not happy being a 90 lb. weakling–in fact a 150 lb. weakling, so I started to weight train and and eat more protein and I put on muscle and became a successful bodybuilder. I won the Mr. Los Angeles competition in 1985. I had learned how to lose or gain weight to improve my appearance. However, I looked good, but I felt bad. I had a huge amount of gas and bloating and a lot of stomach pains. I discovered that certain foods, like dairy, and certain carbohydrate foods that had helped me to gain weight, were difficult for me to digest and tolerate. I had nearly constant symptoms of Irritable Bowel Syndrome. I also started to suffer from hypoglycemic episodes from eating health food oatmeal cookies and bran muffins that spiked my blood sugar and I realized that I had to avoid eating such high glycemic carbs. I realized that how you eat dramatically affects your digestive system and your physiology. Your digestive system is your key to overall health. It is where you digest your food and absorb nutrients. It is the wall that must be kept intact to keep out toxins. A break down of this intestinal mucosal wall is often referred to as leaky gut. I came to understand that having a healthy gastrointestinal system is a key to your overall health. I have been studying and discovering ways to improve digestion in order to improve your health and help you to prevent and overcome chronic diseases. I want to show others not only how to manipulate your body composition, but to help them figure out a way to eat that makes them feel their best. I also became gradually became more aware of how alterations in your posture and structural alignment can result in pain and altered function. As a chiropractor, by analyzing and helping patients to make corrections in their posture and alignment is one of my focuses in practice. This occurs both with regular chiropractic adjustments and chiropractic treatments, as well as with teaching patients proper postural cues and exercises. In this episode, dietitian Gayatri discusses the importance of addressing root causes for optimal health. A little bit about Gayatri: Gayatri Saldivar, MS, RDN, CLT, IFNCP is an expert in the art and science of lab-based protocol design to help clients achieve whole-body wellness. Integrating the Kalish method and the science of nutritional genomics into her work, she named her practice 23 Nutrition Therapy. She is certified in Lifestyle Eating And Performance (LEAP) therapy and customizes anti-inflammation and elimination diets. In this episode, she emphasizes the gut hormone detox connection and how it can lead to symptoms like brain fog, fatigue, anxiety, sleep issues, and gut problems. Saldivar shares her approach of comprehensive root cause analysis and testing to help clients rebalance stress hormones, heal the gut lining, and support detoxification for sustainable wellness. The episode also explores various testing methods, including gut testing, hormone testing, conventional lab work, and micronutrient testing, as well as the significance of personalized nutrition and lifestyle changes. Practical tips are provided to support gut healing, hormone balance, and detox pathways, while debunking diet misconceptions. Key Points: • Comprehensive testing is crucial in identifying imbalances in stress hormones, gut health, and detoxification. • Correcting the gut hormone detox connection in the right order can lead to significant progress in healing and overall well-being. • Detox pathways are evaluated, with a specific emphasis on liver function and glutathione levels. • A clear and structured plan is developed to address specific concerns in a phased approach. • Misconceptions exist on both extremes: thinking diet alone can solve everything or dismissing diet as unrelated to health problems. • Struggling with gut breakdown due to a poor diet but still wanting to consume trigger foods or drinks creates a disconnect. • Quick wins for gut, hormone, and detox health include focusing on chewing food properly and ensuring adequate protein intake. In today's episode I had the great honor of chatting with Lauren Peterson of White Deer apothecary. I loved hearing about her journey as an artist, herbalist and educator. She taught a class on cyanotypes that lit a fire under me and was so fun and empowering! And I made a bunch of cyanotypes this summer. I chose all my favorite sun prints and compiled them into a calendar for the year. I will have them for sale on my website in the coming days! A few of the highlights in this class are hearing how Lauren is so resourceful and the ways she innovates when she makes fire cider. It was also so fun to hear more about her brand's evolution and how she weaves together creativity and aesthetics with her product line and teaching pedagogy. If you get a chance to buy any of her products, you will not regret it, everything she makes smells and tastes like absolute heaven! And it was so fun to hear about her approach to product design and radical flavor combining. A bit about Lauren:Bio:Herbalist Lauren Peterson is a Juniper-lover, Sacred Journey School of Herbalism graduate & now teacher, and owner of White Deer Apothecary. Lauren's passion for plants grew from her desire to deepen her connection with the natural world and nurture relationships that allow healing to take place. Her favorite places to be are outdoors, in the kitchen, and on the dance floor. Before we get into it, Please remember this show is for educational and entertainment purposes only and not to be used to diagnose, treat, cure, etc. any diseases or issues. In this episode, I talk with Alison Marras, who shares her personal story of reaching remission from Hashimoto's disease, along with healing SIBO and parasites. In her mid-20s, Alison was working long hours in the corporate world in New York City, was newly married and hoping to start a family. But soon, she experienced frustrating health issues such as hair loss and digestive distress. At one point, she had lost 75% of her hair. Despite all that, her lab tests looked normal. Finally, she found a naturopath willing to do more extensive thyroid testing, which uncovered Hashimoto's disease, an autoimmune thyroid condition. From there, she began taking steps to heal her body from the inside out, including an anti-inflammatory diet, bioidentical hormone therapy, gut-healing and reducing stress. Eventually, she reached remission from Hashimoto's and got pregnant despite having polycystic ovarian syndrome, or PCOS, since her teens. And she finally overcame SIBO, or small intestinal bacterial overgrowth. Alison's experience changed the course of her life. She went back to school to become a Nutritional Therapy Practitioner. She's also the author of The Paleo Gut Healing Cookbook and blogs at FoodbyMars.com. She believes your healing journey with real food can be a stress-free lifestyle filled with joy and flavor. In my conversation with Alison, you'll hear… The testing that finally uncovered a Hashimoto's diagnosis The diet that helped her reach Hashimoto's remission and allowed her to get pregnant with her daughter The bioidentical hormone therapy that eased Hashimoto's symptoms How mindful eating helped her overcome SIBO Her tips for following an anti-inflammatory diet without being too restrictive And how to find joy in the healing journey Get Alison's free 20-minute paleo/AIP meal prep plan: https://foodbymars.kartra.com/page/mp-optin Try Alison's free mindful eating challenge: https://foodbymars.kartra.com/page/mindful-challenge Episode web page: https://rebuildingmyhealth.com/hashimotos-disease Listen to Rebuilding My Health Radio wherever you find your favorite podcasts… Apple Podcasts, Stitcher, Google Play, Alexa, Spotify, and much more! My guest this week is Cynde, a North Carolina woman who was diagnosed with Parkinson's disease. Cynde has always been exceptionally active, typically walking miles every day. So it was really noticeable when her gait became uneven and one of her arms wasn't swinging when she walked. That was followed by stiffness, tremors and cognitive challenges. Eventually, she began using a walker. Cynde knew she wanted to try a natural approach to what she suspected was Parkinson's disease, so she researched options and found a naturopath and Chinese medicine doctor to help. Through trial and error, she arrived at the right combination of lifestyle changes and therapies, which turned around her symptoms. Cynde now shows zero noticeable signs of Parkinson's disease and is back to walking miles every day – no walker needed. I know you'll take away a lot from Cynde's story and get ideas for natural treatments for Parkinson's. It's a powerful example of improving a chronic illness that typically only progresses one direction. In this episode, you'll learn… The anti-inflammatory diet changes that make the biggest difference for Cynde How a dental procedure contributed to her getting better How she used stem-cell therapy for Parkinson's disease, plus other alternative therapies The “bean” that helps her walk normally Her daily regimen for keeping her body working optimally You can learn more about the doctor that helped Cynde at https://www.naturecuresclinic.com/ Find more of Cynde's story on our site, https://rebuildingmyhealth.com/parkinsons-naturally/ You can listen to Rebuilding My Health Radio wherever you find your favorite podcasts… Apple Podcasts, Stitcher, Google Play, Alexa, Spotify, and much more! My guest today is Angela Privin of Do It Yourself Health. She's my personal digestive health coach. Angela suffered with Lyme disease-triggered irritable bowel syndrome for five years, which caused anxiety to surface for the first time. After doctors shrugged her off, she decided to find her own solutions. She spent a year healing her IBS with diet and supplements and saw her anxiety improve too. From there, she went on to become a digestive health coach. She's been IBS-free for 16 years and now helps others resolve their digestive symptoms using diet, supplementation and lifestyle rebalancing. But when new health issues popped up more recently, anxiety surfaced once again. Angela addressed those health issues and found relief for anxiety in the process. In this episode, you'll learn… - How Angela experienced anxiety for the first time when she contracted Lyme disease and then IBS - How anxiety has returned when her body has been out of balance, particularly with Lyme disease, IBS, mold toxicity, thyroid antibodies (Hashimoto's disease), adrenal fatigue and stress. - The lifestyle changes that helped her mental health - The herbal and nutrient support that made the biggest difference for her You can learn more about Angela Privin at https://diyhealthblog.com/ Find more of Angela's story on our site, https://rebuildingmyhealth.com/anxiety. My guest today completely turned around her health after being virtually bedridden. In her 30s, Louise Swartswalter was a special education teacher, wife and mother of two young children. Then she experienced a serious health crisis that would change her life forever. Rather than accept being sick for the rest of her life, Louise began studying alternative medicine and energy work that would eventually lead to her recovery and second career as a powerful healer and successful business owner. Today, Dr. Louise Swartswalter is a naturopathic doctor, certified biofeedback specialist and founder of the Albuquerque Natural Health Center. For over three decades she has specialized in healing and balancing the human brain through her signature B.R.A.I.N. System, the most comprehensive healing system for the brain, body, soul and life. Through the Albuquerque Natural Health Center, Louise has the opportunity to work with hundreds of individuals seeking help with health issues, including ADHD, allergies, autoimmune conditions, thyroid imbalances, digestive disorders, plus those looking for relationship and career success. She discovered that, to be healthy, vibrant and successful in your life and business, your brain must be in balance. In this episode, you'll learn… The health crash that left Louise bedridden with pain and exhaustion How removing mercury fillings worsened her health before she got better The devastating impact of heavy metals toxicity The many steps she took to treat multiple chemical sensitivities and clean up her environment and diet How she didn't truly heal until she cleared spiritual, mental and emotional blocks The multi-sensory approach to healing she created based on her own experience She says: “I did all the body pieces, you know, food rotation, diet, organic food, all my great supplements, you know, all of those lifestyle pieces, you know? And then I went like, all right, this isn't working all the way. There's more I need to do. And I started on a journey of like a grateful journal and, you know, more spiritual and mental, emotional kind of healing. And then I was introduced to energy work and the energy work actually took me even further.” You can learn more about Dr. Louise Swartswalter and her programs at https://www.louiseswartswalter.com/. Today's guest is Dr. Evan Hirsch, otherwise known as Dr. Evan. He's here to talk about chronic fatigue, something that has affected his family personally. Dr. Evan is a board-certified MD in family medicine and is also trained in integrative and functional medicine. He's now one of the nation's authorities on chronic fatigue. He and his wife both personally suffered with chronic fatigue for years before they found help using the Fix Your Fatigue Program that Evan himself pioneered at the Hirsch Center for Integrative Medicine in Olympia, Washington. With his approach, he found that clients were getting better, faster. They were resolving very challenging medical conditions like rheumatoid arthritis, chronic fatigue, fibromyalgia, diabetes and high blood pressure. He has helped hundreds of people across the country resolve their chronic fatigue and is on a mission to reverse one million cases of chronic fatigue. In this episode, you'll learn… The health crisis that struck this new father and freshly board-certified physician The search for answers that led to natural, holistic, integrative and environmental medicine How he found the underlying causes of fatigue and went on to fix his own 10 potential causes of fatigue The tests that can help uncover the causes of extreme fatigue The basics you need to help prevent fatigue and the deeper work you need to really heal The role of unknown heavy metals, hormone imbalances, infections and toxins in fatigue He says: “I mean, when you know the right tests to do and you're kind of seeing these things, it's no wonder why I was feeling like crud because I had positives. I had significance on every single one of these tests and just one of these tests alone can be indicative of causing fatigue. But I had so many of them and I was just kind of pushing through my days. But as I learned more about these and I applied them, it just kept taking me to a new level in my energy and my ability to focus.” You can learn more about Dr. Evan Hirsch and his programs at https://www.fixyourfatigue.com/. Does this surprise you? Dr. J is sharing seven nutrients that encourage healing in the gut. Dr. J looks at some root causes like food allergens, not enough stomach acid or enzymes, chronic stress, or over-exercising. Tackle the low-hanging fruit and set a good foundation for your gut to heal. Our first powerful nutrient for gut-healing is Zinc to help decrease gut permeability. Next is Glutamine, some people even use this as their first line of defense for the gut because it's so good for you. Glutamine will help heal and restore your gut and can be used in combination with N-acetylglycine. Collagen is also a great low-hanging fruit since it has plenty of glycine in it unless you're doing a lot of bone broth soups, you could likely use more collagen. Aloe soothes the gut and the inflammation present because of its anti-inflammatory properties. Dr. J also mentions peppermint in passing, while not part of the Top 7 list, it is still very good for your gut. Moving on, Dr. J lists a sulfur compound, Methylsulfonylmethane (MSM). Also known as methyl sulfone or dimethyl sulfone, it is known for relieving inflammation and has antioxidant properties to help stabilize cells in your gut. Stay until the end, Dr. J mentions Licorice and other nutrients to help heal the gut.
