#ReadingAfrica: A Panel with Sahra Noor, Joanne Bloch, Colleen Higgs, and Patrice Nganang

Write-minded Podcast

This week Memoir Nation has the privilege of elevating the voices of four African-born authors who were part of a panel conversation with Brooke back in December. This was part of #ReadingAfricaWeek, a global reading celebration in which individuals and organizations share African books, create booklists, hold talks or panels, and spotlight writers. You can find out more at catalystpress.org, and we've curated a list for you as part of our own challenge this week to choose and read one African author (at least) in 2026. Thanks for listening and celebrating these authors with us this week. Sahra Noor is a Somali-American writer and global health expert. Her debut memoir, Salt in the Snow, is coming out in June 2026 and explores what it means to be shaped by the salt air of Mogadishu and the snowy streets of Minneapolis. Joanne Bloch was an exhibiting visual artist for most of her life, until she lost her sight. Unseen is her anthology that emerged from her experience of visual impairment and her desire for marginalized voices to be better heard. She lives in Cape Town. Colleen Higgs is a writer and publisher, and the founder of Modjaji Books, the ground-breaking southern African women's press she started in 2007. She is the author of Looking for Trouble, as well as two poetry collections. She also lives in Cape Town. Patrice Nganang was born in Cameroon and is a novelist, poet, and essayist. His memoir is Scale Boy, and he's also the author of eleven other books. He teaches comparative literature at Stony Brook University in New York.See Privacy Policy at https://art19.com/privacy and California Privacy Notice at https://art19.com/privacy#do-not-sell-my-info.

In this episode of The 1000 Hours Outside Podcast, host Ginny Yurich sits down with theologian and author Joel Muddamalle for a conversation that feels both ancient and urgently relevant. Drawing from Joel's new book The Unseen Battle, they explore spiritual warfare not as something sensational or fear-driven, but as a daily, lived reality shaped by attention, truth, imagination, and small choices. From why Eve didn't panic when the serpent spoke, to how modern distractions quietly gain a foothold in our lives, to why standing firm matters more than fighting harder, this episode invites listeners to see Scripture in full color and to recover a grounded, hopeful confidence. It's thoughtful, accessible theology for parents, skeptics, and anyone who senses there's more happening beneath the surface of ordinary life.

Marcus Guider sees with intention. He frames stories the way others frame thoughts, clean, deliberate, alive. As a Director of Photography and Cinematographer based in Lawrence, Kansas, Marcus brings a grounded eye shaped by his time at the University of Kansas and sharpened by years in the field. His work lives where craft meets instinct, where light does more than illuminate. It speaks. In this episode of Visual Intonation Podcast, Marcus talks about the quiet power of mentorship and timing. A single recommendation opened the door to a lasting creative bond with seasoned cinematographer Jeremy Osbern, a relationship that became both guidance and friendship. Marcus reflects on learning by watching, listening, and trusting the process. Growth, he reminds us, often arrives through people before projects. As an ASC Vision Mentee, Marcus continues to refine his voice while staying rooted in collaboration. His career spans commercial, documentary, sports, and entertainment, with clients and collaborators that include Dell, CBS, Gatorade, National Geographic, Fox Sports, MTV, and Sports Illustrated. Each project adds another layer to his visual language. Each set becomes a classroom. This conversation is about momentum and meaning. About building a career without losing curiosity. About seeing clearly, then choosing where to point the lens. To explore more of Marcus Guider's work, visit marcusguider.com, or find him connecting with peers on LinkedIn and Facebook. Then listen closely. There is a lot to learn between the frames. Support the showVisual Intonation Website: https://www.visualintonations.com/Visual Intonation Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/visualintonation/Vante Gregory's Website: vantegregory.comVante Gregory's Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/directedbyvante/ To support me on Patreon (thank you): patreon.com/visualintonations Tiktok: www.tiktok.com/@visualintonation Tiktok: www.tiktok.com/@directedbyvante

In this episode, Agence France-Presse (AFP) global news editor Roland de Courson joins the podcast to discuss his photo-and-essay project — K-Scar — documenting life, memory and tourism along the inter-Korean border.  De Courson explains why he describes the border as a “scar” and reflects on how indifference, curiosity and commercialized “dark tourism” shape the way people experience the DMZ and nearby frontline sites. The conversation moves from observatories and curated attractions to quieter human stories, such as aging refugees and communities living inside civilian control zones. He also discusses how art, everyday life and even a Starbucks overlooking North Korea reveal the normalization and contradictions of the border.  Roland de Courson is a French journalist born in Madrid. He started his career in Canada and joined AFP in 1994. He is currently a global news editor in Seoul. For over two years, Roland traveled along the inter-Korean border to document his K-Scar project, which can be found online here.  About the podcast: The North Korea News Podcast is a weekly podcast hosted by Jacco Zwetsloot exclusively for NK News, covering all things DPRK — from news to extended interviews with leading experts and analysts in the field, along with insights from our very own journalists.

Transcript:It: Il vento freddo soffiava attraverso la Laguna di Venezia, portando con sé il profumo del mare e l'eco lontano delle maschere danzanti del Carnevale.En: The cold wind blew through the Laguna di Venezia, bringing with it the scent of the sea and the distant echo of the dancing masks of Carnevale. It: Luca, Giulia e Matteo camminavano lungo un percorso familiare, coberto dal velo sottile della nebbia invernale.En: Luca, Giulia, and Matteo walked along a familiar path, covered by the thin veil of winter fog.It: Erano amici da una vita, ma oggi il cielo grigio e il loro silenzio rivelavano una tensione particolare.En: They had been friends for a lifetime, but today the gray sky and their silence revealed a particular tension. It: "Luca, racconta ancora del tesoro," disse Giulia, cercando di riscaldare l'animo con battute.En: "Luca, tell us about the treasure again," said Giulia, trying to warm their spirits with jokes. It: "Si dice che sia nascosto in un vecchio magazzino abbandonato," rispose Luca, gli occhi vivaci.En: "It's said to be hidden in an old abandoned warehouse," replied Luca, his eyes lively. It: "Ma dobbiamo attraversare una parte della laguna chiusa al pubblico per arrivarci."En: "But we have to cross a part of the lagoon closed to the public to get there."It: "È troppo pericoloso," protestò Giulia, stringendo le mani nei guanti caldi.En: "It's too dangerous," protested Giulia, clenching her hands in warm gloves. It: Matteo restò in silenzio, guardando l'acqua scura che scorreva lenta sotto i piedi.En: Matteo remained silent, watching the dark water slowly flowing beneath their feet. It: Era sempre stato quello riflessivo, ma quel giorno, il coraggio di Luca lo ammirava tanto quanto lo spaventava.En: He had always been the reflective one, but that day, Luca's courage both admired and scared him.It: Nonostante le proteste di Giulia, Luca era deciso.En: Despite Giulia's protests, Luca was determined. It: "Non possiamo perdere questa occasione," insistette, la voce piena di determinazione.En: "We can't miss this opportunity," he insisted, his voice full of determination. It: "Matteo, vieni con me."En: "Matteo, come with me."It: Matteo esitò, poi annuì.En: Matteo hesitated, then nodded. It: Non poteva lasciare Luca da solo, anche se la paura gli stringeva lo stomaco.En: He couldn't leave Luca alone, even if fear twisted his stomach. It: Iniziarono a camminare verso la parte proibita della laguna, con Giulia che li seguiva a distanza, pronta a intervenire.En: They started walking towards the forbidden part of the lagoon, with Giulia following at a distance, ready to intervene. It: Il ghiaccio cominciava a formarsi in piccoli lastroni sull'acqua, un manto bianco e ingannevole.En: Ice began to form in small sheets on the water, a deceptive white blanket. It: Mentre avanzavano, l'atmosfera festosa del Carnevale sembrava sempre più lontana.En: As they advanced, the festive atmosphere of Carnevale seemed increasingly distant. It: Il silenzio era rotto solo dai loro passi incerti sul ghiaccio.En: The silence was broken only by their uncertain steps on the ice.It: E poi tutto accadde in un attimo: con un suono sordo, il ghiaccio sotto Luca si ruppe.En: Then everything happened in an instant: with a dull sound, the ice beneath Luca cracked. It: Matteo gridò mentre Luca spariva nell'acqua gelida.En: Matteo shouted as Luca disappeared into the icy water. It: "Luca!"En: "Luca!"It: urlò Giulia, correndo avanti.En: cried Giulia, running forward. It: La paura si trasformò rapidamente in azione mentre lei e Matteo si sforzavano di tirare fuori l'amico dalla morsa gelida.En: Fear quickly turned into action as she and Matteo struggled to pull their friend from the icy grip. It: Il tempo sembrava scorrere al rallentatore, mentre il gelo cercava di sopraffare Luca.En: Time seemed to slow down as the cold tried to overwhelm Luca. It: Insieme, riuscirono a tirarlo fuori dall'acqua, mezzo congelato ma vivo.En: Together, they managed to pull him out of the water, half-frozen but alive. It: Lo portarono fino a una barca vicina, accendendo il motore per scaldare Luca con l'aria calda.En: They carried him to a nearby boat, starting the engine to warm Luca with the hot air.It: Il suono lontano della musica del festival sembrava ora un dolce richiamo alla vita.En: The distant sound of the festival music now seemed a sweet call to life. It: "Luca, ci sei?"En: "Luca, are you there?"It: disse Giulia, preoccupata.En: asked Giulia, worried. It: "Sì," sussurrò Luca, tremando ma grato.En: "Yes," whispered Luca, trembling but grateful. It: "Grazie."En: "Thank you."It: In quel momento, Luca capì che il vero tesoro era proprio lì accanto a lui, nel calore dei suoi amici.En: In that moment, Luca realized that the true treasure was right there beside him, in the warmth of his friends. It: Non aveva bisogno di dimostrare nulla.En: He didn't need to prove anything. It: Giulia sorrise, confortata dal suo prendersi cura che finalmente veniva apprezzato.En: Giulia smiled, comforted by her care finally being appreciated. It: Matteo guardò i due, sentendosi più forte di quanto avesse mai immaginato.En: Matteo looked at the two, feeling stronger than he ever imagined. It: Il sole tramontava mentre il gruppo lasciava la laguna, il viso rivolto verso la vita e l'amicizia che risplendeva come una gemma preziosa.En: The sun set as the group left the lagoon, their faces turned towards life and friendship that shone like a precious gem.It: La lezione appresa era chiara: l'amicizia era il tesoro più grande di tutti.En: The lesson learned was clear: friendship was the greatest treasure of all. Yesterday, Pastor Matt walked us through Genesis 12 and the promise that all nations would be blessed through Abram's seed. Because God always remembers His promises and fulfills His purposes, we have been brought out of darkness and into His light. So the question for us is this: Are we willing to leave what is seen for what is unseen? Jesus calls us to loosen our grip on this life and anchor our hope in the life we have in Him. To trust what we can't yet see. To live for what is eternal. Live for what is unseen.

In Virtue Holds the Shape, we continue our exploration of attachment, turning our attention to the subtle, often unseen forces that shape us in relation to others. Our conversation is anchored in Arthur Schopenhauer's quote: “What warmth is to wax, politeness is to human nature.” We stay with this metaphor as a lens on influence and responsiveness. How do the small gestures of social interaction mold our connections? When does this shaping support and sustain, and when does it begin to constrain or confine?Drawing on personal reflection, we look into attachment through familiar relational roles and invite a partner-based, art-focused exploration. In this practice, you alternate between leading and following, sensing how it feels to guide and to be guided. We reflect on whether our politeness is merely a surface layer—performative, shaped by social expectation—or whether it expresses something deeper, rooted in our values and virtue. Ideally, politeness conveys genuine care and shapes our connections meaningfully. How do you recognize in yourself when politeness is authentic or how does this resonate with you?We invite you to listen and engage with the creative exercise with curiosity and mindful presence. With care,Valentine & RebeccaPhoto credit Ivana Dostálová, Traces of The Unseen, 2025Music credit Andy Gallery@safespaces.art @bellavalentinaart @studio.rb_mindful.artswww.safespaces.artArt Connect Society z.s.Support the show

"I was stuck in the snow, in my car, when these four huge-football-player-sized guys got out of this tiny little car and started walking toward me to help. Who were these guys? And how did they fit inside that car?" ---------- In today's episode, Sarah, a mental health therapist, shares how revisiting her life through the lens of faith revealed moments that no longer feel random. After discovering the Touched by Heaven podcast, memories began resurfacing--an icy road, a spinning car, and unexpected help that arrived in a way she still struggles to explain. Other experiences from childhood also took on new weight, including an unsettling encounter with the Ouija board, a cemetery, and a message that arrived later in a mysterious Christmas card. Uninvited, and deeply confusing. As Sarah reflects, patterns emerge: quiet protection, timely warnings, and a presence that seemed to know what she needed before she did. This conversation invites listeners to reconsider what they may have overlooked in their own lives. ---------- Share Your Story If you have a Touched by Heaven moment that you would like to share with Trapper, please leave us a note at https://touchedbyheaven.net/contact Our listeners look forward to hearing about life-changing encounters and miraculous stories every week. The face was there all along, but no one knew. When Sir Joshua Reynolds painted The Death of Cardinal Beaufort in 1789, he put a demon’s face in the darkness behind the dying man. Reynolds was accurately depicting a scene from a Shakespearean play that mentions the presence of a “busy, meddling fiend,” but some didn’t like his literalism. After Reynolds’ death in 1792, the face was painted over and forgotten. Art conservation work recently revealed it under layers of paint and varnish. The Bible tells of a spiritual reality around us that the eye can’t see, where God reigns supreme. When Elisha was surrounded by a “strong force” of enemy soldiers and chariots, his servant was frightened and asked, “What shall we do?” Elisha told him that “those who are with us are more than those who are with them,” and “prayed, ‘Open his eyes, Lord, so that he may see.’ ” Suddenly the servant “saw the hills full of horses and chariots of fire all around Elisha” (2 Kings 6:14-17). The horses and chariots of fire indicate angelic beings there for Elisha’s protection. This is one of many places where Scripture underscores the comforting truth that in a world where danger lurks and spiritual warfare rages, God still watches over us. No matter what we face, how good it is to know that nothing “will be able to separate us” from His love (Romans 8:39).

In this episode, Buck sits down with Father Turbo Qualls for a wide-ranging and sobering conversation about spiritual warfare, ecumenism, and the modern pressure on the Orthodox to trade truth for comfort. Beginning with reflections from St. Mary of Egypt and the Synaxis of Hagia Sophia, the discussion moves into how external forces — political, cultural, and spiritual — have repeatedly targeted the Church, often in ways that are subtle, coordinated, and unseen. Father Turbo revisits a past conversation with Buck about the COVID era, exploring how major disruptions in Church life coincided with key feasts, fasts, and liturgical moments — not as a matter of human conspiracy, but as part of a deeper "powers and principalities" reality that operates beyond individual actors. What if your spirit guides have been with you your entire life, quietly guiding, protecting, and nudging you forward long before you ever knew what to call them? In this episode of Infinite Life, Infinite Wisdom, Susan Grau explores who spirit guides truly are, how they communicate, and why so many people feel disconnected from their guidance even when it has been there all along.Susan clears up common myths, including the idea that guidance should be loud, dramatic, or urgent. True guidance, she explains, is subtle, calm, and grounded in clarity, not fear. She breaks down the ways guides communicate: through body sensations, repetition, timing, silence, curiosity, emotional resonance, and even exhaustion, especially during grief, trauma, or periods of spiritual awakening.Importantly, Susan reminds us that guides do not override free will, demand obedience, or remove pain. Their role is to help us reconnect with integrity, truth, and self-trust. This episode is not about becoming psychic or chasing signs. It is about remembering what your soul already knows and learning to listen to the quiet wisdom that has been guiding you all along. In This Episode:[00:00] Introduction[00:46] Understanding spirit guides[02:00] Myths and truths about spirit guides[03:28] How spirit guides communicate[11:52] Recognizing guidance through the body[15:08] The role of silence in guidance[16:48] Guidance during grief and trauma[19:03] The purpose of guides[20:43] Guidance and life's momentum[21:08] Understanding guidance and integrity[22:00] Recognizing and trusting your inner voice[22:16] The role of fear in blocking guidance[22:40] The mind vs. the soul[23:46] Guidance through erosion and discomfort[25:18] The importance of timing and boundaries[26:40] Emotional reactions and recognition[27:24] Disruption of habits and growth[29:17] Dreams as a communication tool[29:58] Curiosity and exploration[30:42] Exhaustion and alignment[31:25] Guides and the truth of your path[32:50] Integration and embodiment of guidance[34:00] The role of spirit guides in your life[40:48] Final thoughtsNotable Quotes[03:08] “Guides don't shout, they signal.”[05:06] “Your guides don't leave during grief. It's not theatrical.”[15:41] “Silence usually means integration is required… It shifts authority from external reassurance to internal stability.”[16:53] “In grief, communication often becomes more physical and emotional rather than verbal.”[19:58] “Fear is never the voice of a guide. Urgency, shame, pressure, these are not guidance.”[22:00] “Most people are already hearing their guides and calling it something else: intuition, gut instinct, coincidence, luck.”[31:33] “Guides do not communicate to make your life easier. They communicate to make it truer.”[33:29] “Guides communicate until you no longer need to be convinced that you are guided.”[40:51] “Spirit guides are not here to tell you who to be. They're here to remind you who you already are.”Susan GrauSusan Grau is an internationally celebrated intuitive life coach, a key opinion leader, author, medium and speaker, who discovered her ability to communicate with the spirit world after a near-death experience at age four. In this episode, we are joined by LifeStance Regional Clinical Director Mikka McGee to explore the emerging and unsettling phenomenon often referred to as “AI psychosis.” Together, we unpack how interactions with AI chatbots may intensify delusions or psychotic symptoms in vulnerable individuals, why the term—while non-clinical—has gained traction, and how a lack of guardrails in some AI systems can unintentionally reinforce false beliefs or paranoia, creating “shared delusions.” Through real-world examples, the conversation examines the risks, ethical implications, and potential solutions, including stronger AI safeguards, thoughtful regulation, and the irreplaceable role of human connection in mental health care.

We feel unclean because of our shame, unworthy because of our sin, or unseen because of our story. As a result, we hide in obscurity or shrink back in fear. But as Matthew tells us of Jesus cleansing a leper, healing a centurion's servant, and healing Peter's mother-in-law, he reveals that with Jesus, no one is unclean, unworthy, or unseen.

This episode explores the often overlooked unseen intelligence guiding your fertility. This includes the subtle signs, inner wisdom, emotional landscape, and spiritual connection that influence your body just as much as lab numbers do. Michelle also dives into the science behind belief and emotional states, referencing insights from cellular biologist Bruce Lipton and psychologist Dr. Lisa Miller to bridge the gap between spirituality and physiology. If you are craving reassurance, perspective, and a reminder that your journey is still unfolding in ways you may not yet see, this episode is for you. Key Takeaways:  Your fertility journey is shaped by both the physical and the unseen. Numbers matter, but they are not the whole story. Lab values are only a snapshot in time. They can and often do change. Miraculous pregnancies can and do happen, even after discouraging diagnoses. Emotional and spiritual alignment deeply influence your physiology and hormonal environment. Belief, joy, and hope are not only comforting. They are biologically impactful. Your body operates through an extraordinary intelligence that we are only beginning to understand. Connecting with your spirit baby or inner guidance can open doors in unexpected ways. On Friday's Mark Levin Show, WJNO's Brian Mudd fills in for Mark Levin. ISIS has been butchering Jews and Christians across the Middle East and beyond, and the world knows it. And when President Donald Trump says that if these terrorists keep spilling innocent blood he'll strike back—he means it. No double‑talk. No hesitation. Strength. Under Trump, Americans have seen lower taxes, a stronger economy, a secure border, peace instead of endless wars, the rollback of DEI mandates, and an end to radical policies targeting children. These are facts, not fantasy. Millions of Americans are grateful for it. In addition, Affordability? Americans are better off today than they were in 2020. Tariffs, deportations, and job growth have put real money back into the pockets of working people. Is the country perfect? Of course not. People are struggling. But the nation is rising—economically, structurally, confidently. Growth averaging 4% in Trump's first year is no accident. It's leadership. The media, corrupt, hypocritical, ideologically driven, pretends none of this is happening. They distort, they smear, and they distract, but the American people see through it. That's why the left keeps losing support. Reality has a way of breaking through the noise. If any of Trump's accomplishments have touched your life, your family, your wallet, your safety—then this is your moment. This is your year. Learn more about your ad choices. This is a Grave Talks CLASSIC EPISODE! What started as an ordinary afternoon searching for relics became a moment that permanently altered one man's understanding of reality. In this episode of The Grave Talks, we dive into the chilling experience of Matthew Sorge, whose visit to an abandoned farmhouse led to an unexpected and deeply unsettling paranormal encounter. Matthew set out looking for remnants of the past—forgotten objects, buried history, tangible proof of lives once lived. Instead, he came face to face with something far less explainable. What he encountered challenged everything he thought he knew about the unseen world and forced him to confront the possibility that we're never truly alone, even in places long left behind. His experience didn't end at the farmhouse. It sparked a relentless search for answers, pushing him to explore the boundaries between the physical and the paranormal. Together, we examine what happened, how it changed him, and what lessons can be drawn from an encounter that arrived without warning—and refused to be ignored.
