I now work professionally with clients to achieve a range of goals including weight reduction and management, stress management, life balance, and tapping into the incredible power of visioning, proper goal-setting, and achieving progress, not perfection. But I haven't always been Healthy Heather. I used to be overweight, undernourished, stressed out, and fed up. I felt like I did everything "right" but I could never achieve my fitness goals. Then I gave up and decided to forget the numbers, forget the scale, and opt out of the crazy traps I kept walking into. After my own pity party of a few weeks, I realized I missed my healthy goals. But I decided to approach them differently. I changed the way I thought about my wellness, and that changed everything. I lost the weight, gained the energy, balanced my life, and even quit my job as a non-profit manager so I can help you do the same thing. The success of my clients and partners is my passion, and helping others live healthy is its own reward. I am so thankful for those bad decisions...without them I never would have ended up here with you! Now, you can find me speaking to community groups about creating sustainable healthy change, writing about raising healthy and active children, meeting with individuals to hunker down in their goals, or working with companies to design and deliver effective employee wellness programs. As we start this third season of the show, I want to first of all, thank you for listening. The core ethos of the show will be steadfast to always have amazing guests talking about important topics. My goal is also to experiment and learn via the mechanics of the show. Last year on New Year’s Day I did a monolog on Healthspan and my personal experimentation and rationale behind it, and to my nice surprise it was a very popular episode. I got to thinking, I’ll try a new tradition of doing something different from my usual conversations and do a deeper, more personal dive, but work to make it useful to others. So, here goes, I hope you like it. This is the first day of a New Year and new decade, and I wanted to think out loud about getting things done in 2020 and beyond. This past year, I turned 60, and after my initial freak-out passed, I set out to make my 60th year somewhat of an adventure. I don’t want to squander any remaining years, and really, no one should at any age. And, with all due modesty, I am not a newbie when it comes to doing a number of dumb things in my first 59 years. I decided to do what I called “Epic 60.” Not that I was going to do 60 things, but more so whatever I did would be “epic” for me to achieve while turning 60. As I have not gotten them all done in the time frame of one year, I then thought I could rename this endeavor as “Epic Sixties.”  But that sounded more like a tribute album to old rock-and-roll bands, and potentially limiting or confusing. I realized with the help of my family pointing out to me that most of what I want to do, so do others, of any age. Thus, rebrand to “Epic Living” and what follows herein is one approach, and some tips and ideas that may resonate for you. And now, on with the show. Epic Ideas for 2020: Revolution over Resolutions. Bottom-line, see what work, most of the time, just for you. Now, go do something epic!

Questioning the Limits of Human Performance and Endurance with Alex Hutchinson PhD

Have you ever questioned your “limits?” Maybe it was doing something athletic, or perhaps in your work or even personal life. I think no matter who you are, where you are, or what you do, pushing up against some type of limit is part of what makes a human a human. Some limits may be external or situational. But what about those that we self-impose? What about those we learned or believe to be true—but what if they were not? Well then enter Alex Hutchinson, PhD, and his work, experience and latest book, the New York Times best seller, ENDURE: Mind, Body, and the Curiously Elastic Limits of Human Performance. Rich Roll said, “Alex’s examination of limits is not restricted to physical performance. Defined broadly as ‘the struggle to continue against a mounting desire to stop,’ Alex suggests that endurance is best understood as surprisingly universal, applicable to essentially every challenge we face, be it athletic, academic, professional or emotional.” Hear, hear! In this episode we explore both the physical and the psychological components of human performance and endurance—what are the ingredients that lead to breaking a record versus throwing in the towel?  We do go wide into the worlds of endurance athletes, and we do go way deep into running, but I suspect what you’ll learn in this episode will transcend any particular category. Alex was also a two-time finalist in the 1500, at the Canadian Olympic trials, and has represented Canada internationally in track, cross-country, road racing, and mountain running competitions. Alex lives his life to the fullest, and does so with a curious mind and scientific eye that benefits us all.
