In 2018, the sex toy company Dame decided to advertise in the New York City subway, run by the MTA. In September, the MTA's ad agency, Outfront Media, began working with Dame on a campaign that would run in subway cars, showcasing sex toys against neutral backgrounds and featuring slogans that read, “Toys, for sex” and customer reviews.By late November of that year, however—after Dame says it spent significant money revising and developing ads in an attempt to meet the ad agency's suggestions for approval—the MTA completely and abruptly changed course on Dame's campaign, as well as all other sex toy ads on public transit. The MTA rejected Dame's ad campaign, and publicly published guidelines on advertising that prohibited any “sexually oriented business" from advertising on MTA property.Meanwhile, ads for viagra and other erectile dysfunction products continued to grace the eyes of countless New York commuters, with no questions asked. So in 2019, Dame sued the MTA for the arbitrary censorship they had experienced. This story demonstrates the countless hurdles and discrimination companies within the sex industry face in trying to market and discuss their products. Whether it's Facebook, Instagram, Tik Tok or billboards, talking about sex and pleasure in a frank and open way on the internet, and in the real world, is extremely difficult.Alexandra Fine, the Founder of Dame, has navigated these challenges in many creative ways. After graduating with her master's in Clinical Psychology from Columbia University in New York, Alexandra founded Dame Products alongside engineer Janet Lieberman in 2014 with a line of vibrators aimed at closing the "pleasure gap."Since then, Dame has raised upwards of $11 million and run a number of successful crowdfunding campaigns, leveraging platforms such as Indigogo and Kickstarter. At the company's helm, Alexandra possesses the resilience and energy required to bring light to an industry that many are attempting to hide. Research has found that far fewer women than men are having orgasms during sex. When we look at sex and orgasms more specifically, the vast majority of women do not orgasm from vaginal penetration alone. Most women can only experience orgasm with clitoral stimulation. When you listen to Pam Fine, you hear strength. You hear poise, positivity, intelligence, confidence, courage. You hear someone who is in control of her life and her destiny. Pam is an educator and a counselor, and you hear that experience and wisdom in her voice as well. The abuse that Pam suffered for 20 months at the hands of Joe Tumpkin did not and does not define her. In fact, the violence she suffered became almost secondary to the miscarriage of justice, the abuse that she suffered during an agonizing 28-month legal process. The University of Colorado made the conscious decision to dismiss her concerns and suffering, thereby endangering her and others. And the Adams County District Attorney doubled down by assigning a biased attorney to prosecute her case. The actions of these officials – all men – caused as much trauma as the hands around her neck. Pam’s is a harrowing story not just of domestic violence, but of systemic failure in which victims are dismissed, shamed, and blamed. Hers is the classic example of why so many victims choose not to come forward – the process of seeking justice is just as bad, if not worse, as the abuse itself. We hear again that Domestic Violence abusers follow a playbook – previous relationships with violence, infidelity, alcohol abuse, explosive rage, stalking. This is not normal. If you are in a relationship with these signs, you need to leave. What Pam wants everyone to know is that Domestic Violence happens to strong, confident people. There is no shame in what happened to you, and you deserve better. 75 - Finding a Balance of Entrepreneurial Superpowers | feat. Alex Fine   Cheat Sheet Designing a product for a customer and designing a product for a manufacturer to create are two different things. Customers want features and benefits and manufacturers want it to be made of only one part. Designing and building a prototype is equally different from designing a product to be made thousands of times. Some contract manufacturers will take your prototype design and translate it into something they can use for mass production, but that is not ideal. You will want an industrial design engineer in your corner. If industrial engineering is not your forte, you can partner with a firm, or find a kickass cofounder. If you do, your chances of delivering on time go through the roof.   About this episode Most of the people that call me for advice or to hire me to run their campaigns are visionaries. They have big hearts and bigger dreams. But oftentimes they lack the skills in another area of business that is crucial to the success in the market they have chosen to tackle. In consumer technology crowdfunding, the skills deficit I most often see is in the nitty gritty detail work of industrial design and engineering. You can have a great idea, execute a crowdfunding campaign on it perfectly, raise a ton of money, and then be screwed trying to manufacture. What is the solution? Partner with people who have the skills you need. Chris Prendergast partnered with an industrial design firm for JamStack. Today’s guest, Alex Fine, is a sex therapist with a Masters Degree in Clinical Psychology from Columbia University. Alex brought her passion for human sexuality and partnered with an MIT mechanical engineering grad, Janet Lieberman, who brought extensive product design experience. Together they cofounded Dame Products and have raised over $1.2 million dollars over two campaigns for two different, cutting edge, sex toys. The original, Eva, raised $575,000 in 45 days on IndieGoGo in 2014. Their latest, Fin, raised $394,000 in 30 days on Kickstarter in late 2016.
