In this episode, my guest is Ari Wallach, adjunct associate professor at Columbia University's School of International and Public Affairs and host of a new TV series titled A Brief History of the Future. We discuss the importance of learning to project our understanding of ourselves and our goals into the future, both for our own sake and for future generations. We also explore how this fosters a sense of unity and community within our species. We examine how technology and modern society influence our perception of time and our ability to make decisions in a fast-paced, reward-driven environment that leads to our best possible future. Additionally, we discuss how the dismantling of traditional institutions has altered people's sense of purpose. We outline protocols to cultivate long-term thinking, connect with core values, and define a deep sense of purpose. This episode provides listeners with actionable tools to merge short- and long-term thinking in ways that create a positive, lasting impact on ourselves, society, and the planet. Futurist Ari Wallach asks, “how do you want to be remembered?” Humans have a "lifetime bias." When we plan ahead, we do so by thinking in terms of years and decades rather than centuries and millennia. We need to escape this short-term thinking if we want to be great ancestors to the generations of humans that will come after us. One way to do so is through transgenerational empathy, by which we reconcile ourselves with the past in order to focus on the attributes that we want to pass on to the next generation. ----------------------------------------------------------------- This video is part of The Progress Issue, a Big Think and Freethink special collaboration. Futurist Ari Wallach shares how to become future-conscious. Futurist Ari Wallach knows it can be very difficult, but he's going to need you to think about yourself. Not yourself right now — that's easy to do. You're already doing it! He means thinking about yourself in the future. Keeping what may lie ahead in mind — being future-conscious — makes you more likely to eat right and exercise; more likely to plan ahead financially; more likely to forge strong, healthy relationships and treat people right. Researchers have found we see our future selves like celebrities, like some vaguely knowable figure. And when that extends society-wide, we make decisions that may not benefit us, like spending recklessly or harming the climate for quick gain. Wallach is the founder and executive director of Longpath, an initiative that wants to foster being future-conscious. If you can keep tomorrow in mind, it can be possible to have a better today. Short-term thinkers take shortcuts. Take the longpath instead, explains futurist Ari Wallach. Long-term planning is tough. With all of the pressures and distractions of daily life, it's often a hassle to stop and consider whether what we're doing at any given moment is putting us on track toward our future goals. And if the answer is no, it often takes even more effort to consciously change course and sacrifice immediate gratification for long-term gain. Long-term thinking is difficult for anyone, but especially for those living paycheck to paycheck. Does that mean “longtermism” is only for the privileged? The answer is no, according to the futurist Ari Wallach, author of "Longpath: Becoming the Great Ancestors Our Future Needs." Although it might be harder for some people to consider how our current actions will affect the future, it's a moral question that we all should ask ourselves. chapters:- 0:00 What is ‘longpath' thinking? 1:33 Take the pause 2:16 Who is taking shortcuts? --------------------------------------------------------------------------------- About Ari Wallach: Ari Wallach is an applied futurist and Executive Director of Longpath Labs. Climate change, terrorism, social inequality and poverty, wars between nations, and injustice. Things do not look too good for the world today, and there seems to be little to no hope for the future. A Brief History of the Future, a new docu-series on PBS, challenges this pessimistic outlook. Directed by Andrew Morgan and presented by Ari Wallach, the series visits people from all over the world who are doing something – no matter how big or small – to make the world a better place, not just for their today, but also for everyone's tomorrow. Andrew is Matthew Sherwood's guest on this episode of Factual America. Together, they explore why humans are given to pessimism – ironically, the reason is not a negative one, the idea that what we regard today as possible was once thought to be impossible, and how creativity can come out of what Andrew calls ‘this season of chaos and complexity'. Andrew talks about A Brief History of the Future from an intensely personal perspective: he came to the series suffering from burnout after making other documentaries about problems facing the world. Conversely, his view of the future is both epic and dynamic: the future is a verb; we do it, make it, every day. Discover how on Factual America. Climate change. War. Civil unrest. Is it responsible to have kids today? Futurist Ari Wallach explains. If you pay too much attention to negative stories in the media, you might get the impression that the world is all doom and gloom — that humanity is headed for catastrophe. After all, things like climate change, wealth inequality, and political polarization are real problems that demand big solutions. To some people, the state of our world is so bleak that they wonder whether it's ethical to have children. But that's a short-sighted worldview, according to Ari Wallach, author of Longpath: Becoming the Great Ancestors Our Future Needs. Wallach notes that even though our modern world has plenty of flaws, our lives are far better today than they would have been 100 or 1,000 years ago. And that's thanks to achievements in all fields of human endeavor — from science to philosophy — that people work toward every day. About Ari Wallach Ari Wallach is an applied futurist and Executive Director of Longpath Labs. He is the author of Longpath: Becoming the Great Ancestors Our Future Needs by HarperCollins and the creator and host of the forthcoming series on PBS A Brief History of the Future, which is being executive produced by Kathryn Murdoch and Drake. He has been a strategy and foresight advisor to Fortune 100 companies, the US Department of State, the Ford Foundation, the UN Refugee Agency, the RacialEquity 2030 Challenge and Politico's Long Game Forum. As adjunct associate professor at Columbia University he lectured on innovation, AI, and the future of public policy. Wallach's TED talk on Longpath has been viewed 2.6 million times and translated into 21 languages. Ari was the co-creator of 2008's pro-Obama The Great Schlep with Sarah Silverman. What do we owe future humans? In principle, it seems obvious that we should do what we can to make life better for the generations that follow, just as our ancestors did for us. But while most of us agree that doing this is the right thing, it can be hard to put into practice while also avoiding some of the pitfalls that often afflict growing philosophies like effective altruism and longtermism. Join Dave as he speaks to Harvard psychologist and philosopher Joshua Greene about what drives our moral instincts, and to futurist Ari Wallach about how tapping into spirituality and emotion can help us become better ancestors to those yet to be born. Are you struggling with purpose and anxiety about the state of the world we live in? Do you find it difficult to think long term and focus too heavily on short-term gains and goals? We live in a world where more than ever we suffer due to short-term thinking, and in today's episode, Paul discusses this phenomenon with futurist Ari Wallach, the founder of Longpath and author of 'Longpath: Becoming The Ancestors Our Future Needs', who offers a more constructive, positive solution towards long-term thinking, and talks about the mindset shift we need to adopt in order to change our lives for the better. KEY TAKEAWAYS Showing up in the world and being aware of how we interact with others is vital to long term thinking as it establishes a trend tab. We think too much about the current day or immediate future. If we envisage our story as an ancestor, it allows us to see the perspective of future generations and shows us a broader long term view of life. The three pillars of the Longpath mindset are Futures Thinking, Transgenerational Empathy and Alternate Aim. The more that people become aligned with the long term future, or Longpath, the more they think about more than themselves. This connection brings experiences, opportunities and people into life. BEST MOMENTS 'Longpath is a way of being seen in the world' 'When we imagine ourselves as great ancestors, it elevates us out of the present moment' 'A lot of folks have some form of spiritual practice or connection that goes beyond the here and now way of thinking' 'These synchronicities can feel magical at times' VALUABLE RESOURCES Mindset Change Podcast Mindset Coaching and Therapy The Mindset Coach UK Instagram Mindset Change YouTube Longpath - https://www.longpath.org/ari-wallach ABOUT THE HOST Paul Sheppard Paul is well known for his holistic therapy and coaching approach  when working with anxiety, stress, confidence, and motivation, understanding, and treating the root causes and surrounding issues He has a passion for understanding how the mind works and has been trained in many therapies. How do we connect with ourselves?   Today, I talk with Ari Wallach, a futurist and social systems strategist. He is the Founder and Executive Director of Longpath Labs, an initiative focused on bringing long-term thinking and coordinated behavior to the individual, organizational, and societal realms in order to ensure humanity flourishes on an ecologically-thriving planet Earth for centuries to come. Ari is the author of “Longpath: Becoming the Great Ancestors Our Future Needs.”   Listen in to hear how Ari defines longpath, how we should be examining our own futures, and more.   Topics We Discuss:   [2:19] Longpath is a verb in the sense that it's an applied mindset. Most people think of a futurist as someone who is projecting into the future; Ari isn't that type of futurist, he doesn't predict. Longpath is a way of navigating those intertidal moments, those moments that are chaotic and in flux.    [11:22] Using the word “surviving” automatically trips the limbic system, and in that moment we become very short-term thinkers. When we become more fear-based in our approach, we become laser-focused on what's in front of us. But we need to be thinking of the far future in these moments of chaos.    [21:32] First and foremost, figure out who you are. How did you get to this point? Ari talks about desired futures versus examined-desired futures. No one is born thinking they should be a doctor or race car driver. A lot of these pathways are culturally forced onto people. Before you can start to think about what future you want to live in, you have to step back and examine what got you thinking that way in the first place.   [32:09] When we had the Copernican revolution, it led us to more human freedom and enlightened thinking, but we eradicated the vibrational, mystical realm. We said if you can measure it, great; if you can't, it's terrible. In this intertidal moment we're realizing we can have both.   [37:52] Think of ourselves less in a 100-yard race and more in a marathon in which we're holding the baton for the next generation. We need to T-up the next generation so they're that much higher up on the ladder when it comes to flourishing. This will have us thinking less as individuals and tie us to a more extensive timeframe.   [39:39] How you say goodbye to your children in the morning, how you treat your partner, your colleagues, the person who checks your badge- those things matter not just in the moment. How you interact with them changes them and how they interact with other people.   [40:09] What does it mean for an emotion to go viral? An emotion like compassion, empathy, awe, or hope? If you're embedding that in your everyday small interactions with other people and yourself, that could go viral. By doing that, we can change the soil from which we build solutions in order to build better tomorrows. [42:49] As a culture we lack death awareness. Ari and Amy discuss how our culture is death-averse and the importance of engaging in activities that acknowledge our death so we can better prepare ourselves and future generations for what the world should look like. All of culture is our way of dealing with impermanence. We are the only species that becomes aware of our death, and it paralyzes us.     [47:14] How Ari recommends focusing on life-affirming experiences that make the world a better place.     [49:14] Death is in the zeitgeist right now due to COVID-19 and people are searching to understand the moment we are in and how they can find more meaning and purpose in their own life.     [50:30] Understanding the questions we are asking ourselves about how to be on the Longpath. Ari discusses how the third paragraph of the obituary is very important to thinking about how we live our life. Ari shares some of the biggest questions we should actually be asking ourselves.   FOLLOW ARI WALLACH:   Find Ari and the programs he offers on his website or on Instagram.   His new book, “Longpath: Becoming the Great Ancestors Our Future Needs” is available on Amazon.       Life, Death and the Space Between is brought to you by: Dr. Amy Robbins | Host, Executive Producer PJ Duke | Executive Producer 2 Market Media | Audio & Video Editing Mara Stallins | Outreach & Social Media Strategy Claire | Clairperk.com | Podcast Cover Design

With the cost of living soaring and a global recession afoot, people and businesses are already facing the consequences of cascading global crises. Crises which amounts to a perfect storm of falling incomes, rising prices, public service cuts, rising inequalities, lack of investment and more. Research has also shown employer investment in areas such as training has fallen sharply since 2005 risking nations such as the UK ‘sleepwalking into skills stagnation'. While the war for talent has long been an issue (particularly in the tech sector) and the perils and pitfalls of short-term thinking long known - the unique challenges of today presents new existential risks for people and businesses within this changed global economy. Today's guest, Michael Houlihan, CEO of Generation is working to fix some of the existential problems we witness whilst creating new pathways between education & employment.Generation partners with companies to provide free, effective and intensive training programmes that transform education-to-employment systems, helping to prepare, place, and support people into meaningful, well-paid jobs that would otherwise be inaccessible. Generation has partnered with The BlackRock Foundation, McKinsey & Company, Microsoft, Verizon and more to successfully tackle global unemployment, placing thousands of people into jobs that have generated more than $140 million in salary income to date. Working in over 16 countries, Generation has also been collaborating with Government and businesses to pinpoint where there are skills gaps, helping to train and reskill people who might have lost their jobs, were unable to access higher education, or who want to explore an entirely new career path.During today's conversation we explore the importance of future conscious thinking and behaviours, why remote working and flexibility is key to economic growth, how older workers are assets, not liabilities coupled to a new pathway to a new generation and more.I thoroughly enjoyed our conversation with Michael and we hope you do too. This week's guest lays out plainly the role our emotions play in how we communicate with each other across differences and divides.   Ari Wallach calls this consideration of our emotions as being full-spectrum human beings who can go forward, backward, and inward in our thoughts, and when examining a path forward through conflicts and how we envision our future as a society and as people, we must pay heed to the shared humanity that exists within our emotions.   Ari is a futurist, the founder and executive director of Longpath Labs, and the author of the book Longpath: Becoming the Great Ancestors Our Future Needs, an antidote for short-termism. In Longpath, which is a state of mind that recognizes how our decisions today affect the lives of generations after us, Ari argues that we are at a critical juncture in our time as humans where examining our desired future as a species requires asking some uncomfortable questions, empathizing with generations past, present, and future, and leaning into relational tensions.   Ari and I discuss the nature of the time we're living in, which Ari relates to the turbulent intertidal zone of the ocean, and how your role and my role is not to convince each other to think the same, but to explore commonalities that exist and build upon them.   Check out Ari's work at https://www.longpath.org/ and connect with Ari on Twitter at https://twitter.com/ariw.

Part 2 of 2 – Many of the problems we face today, from recent global recessions to climate change, can be traced back to short term thinking. This week, host Elisa is joined by Ari Wallach, futurist and author of Longpath: Becoming the Great Ancestors our Future Needs. Ari acutely notes that we are at a significant turning point in history, one when bold change is needed to lay the groundwork for future generations. Yet, many Americans remain distracted by division and focused on the here and now. How do we compare to other nations that might be taking a longer term view of themselves? And how can we rethink our political, corporate, and education systems to better adapt to, and take leadership in, establishing the innovations to come? How much is the value of time really worth? Carl Sandburg said, “Time is the coin of your life. It is the only coin you have, and only you can determine how it will be spent.” In this Momentum Friday episode from the Passion Struck podcast, I tackle the value of time. I examine this by studying wisdom from the stoics on the topic and using ten of their mantras for managing time. Members of the Passion Struck community have asked questions like, "Why do I always feel there aren't there enough hours in the day to do the things I want to do?", "Why do I keep procrastinating?", "Why do I waste my time doing frivolous things?", Why am I constantly dissatisfied with where my life is going?" and many other similar questions. This episode is dedicated to answering them. This episode tackles how to figure out what your time is worth and use that information to spend your time more effectively. Learning how to get the most out of your time starts with knowing exactly what your time is worth. --► Get the full show notes: https://passionstruck.com/loneliness-is-not-a-joke-here-are-10-ways-to-deal-with-it/  --► Subscribe to My YouTube Channel Here: https://www.youtube.com/c/JohnRMiles --► Subscribe to the podcast: https://podcasts.apple.com/us/podcast/passion-struck-with-john-r-miles/id1553279283 *Our Patreon Page: https://www.patreon.com/passionstruck. Over the past few months, the growing chronic loneliness epidemic has come up repeatedly in my interviews on the Passion Struck podcast. Given its prevalence, I decided to devote this episode to addressing its significance. Loneliness is a human sentiment that is complicated and unique to every person. Because there isn't a known common cause, the consequences of loneliness and its prevention can vary dramatically. Anne Hathaway did a great job articulating her feelings about loneliness in the following quote, "Loneliness is my least favorite thing about life. The thing that I'm most worried about is just being alone without anybody to care for or someone who will care for me." Her quote brings to life how differently we each experience loneliness. For example, a lonely elderly person who struggles to have people to talk to has different needs than a college student leaving home for the first time. In today's Momentum Friday Passion Struck podcast episode, I dive into what it means to be "lonely," as well as the causes and consequences of loneliness, and provide ten different ways to deal with loneliness.   --► Get the full show notes: https://passionstruck.com/loneliness-is-not-a-joke-here-are-10-ways-to-deal-with-it/  --► Subscribe to My Channel Here: https://www.youtube.com/c/JohnRMiles --► Subscribe to the podcast: https://podcasts.apple.com/us/podcast/passion-struck-with-john-r-miles/id1553279283 *Our Patreon Page: https://www.patreon.com/passionstruck. John R. Miles - Eight ways to stop making excuses to unlock an intentional life. Brought to you by Indeed. Receive a $75 credit at:  https://www.indeed.com/passionstruck.  People often ask me, 'How does making excuses impact intentional positive change in life?' In the words of Benjamin Franklin, “He that is good for making excuses is seldom good for anything else.” As cruel as that sounds, Franklin's words are closer to reality than we think. Until we stop making excuses, we will encounter consequences to living our lives with focus, purpose, and intentionality. Trust me when I say, making excuses is one of the worst things you can do if you desire to become your best self.  --► Get the full show notes: https://passionstruck.com/how-to-stop-making-excuses/  --► Subscribe to My Channel Here: https://www.youtube.com/c/JohnRMiles --► Subscribe to the podcast: https://podcasts.apple.com/us/podcast/passion-struck-with-john-r-miles/id1553279283 *Our Patreon Page: https://www.patreon.com/passionstruck. What I Discuss With Ari Wallach The question we're asking ourselves, and we've continuously been asking ourselves for 1000s of years, is "Who am I and why am I here?" Suppose you are living a life that now has a purpose for something bigger than yourself. In that case, the immediate payoff is that you are now finding that the things that you do and the interactions that you have with yourself, your own inner voice with other humans, the things that you consume, and the ways that you vote, are no longer just about you. We explore the following topics: What is a “futurist”? What are the foundational principles of the Longpath perspective? What Ari means when he says “short-termism” What is “transgenerational empathy”? What are a few examples of the Longpath perspective at work today? Who are the biggest offenders of short-termism?  What is the payoff for planning for a future we won't be around to see? Why does becoming the great ancestors our future needs built on intentionality Have any questions, comments, or stories you'd like to share? Drop us a line at info@passionstruck.com! We as a global society currently face challenges—some of which are existential in nature—that simply cannot be solved with the mindset, institutions, and paradigms currently in place.Instead, these solutions require that we think beyond current economic, political, and social constraints—and even well beyond our individual life spans—to consider deeply the impact we will have on many generations into the future.Indeed, these solutions require an applied mindset that Ari Wallach calls Longpath—an active way of being that cultivates future-conscious thinking and behavior to build more hopeful visions of the future, turn those visions into action, and foster more meaning in our lives and legacy.Ari is a futurist (although he hates that term), a social systems strategist, and the author of a new book out this week, aptly titled (you guessed it) Longpath, which extends a discussion he began with his 2017 TED Talk, Short-termism is killing us: it's time for Longpath which has been viewed over 2.5 million times. This conversation asks a simple question: how do we become great ancestors to our future descendants? The future is not a singular certainty. Nor is it solely fueled by technological advances in some far distant point in time. Instead, the future is manifesting now—and it is very much human. In this fascinating conversation Ari explains why.Watch: YouTube.Read: Show notes.Today's Sponsors:Calm: Guided meditations, sleep stories, and more. Last November, after an extended RFP bidding process involving initially 280 cities, narrowed down to twenty “finalists”, Amazon announced Long Island City in Queens, New York as its “HQ2” winner. New York's agreements with Amazon guaranteed $27 billion in revenue for New York with $3 billion returned to Amazon in tax credits. In February of this year, however, on Valentine's Day no less (slightly tone deaf!), Amazon abruptly canceled its plans entirely and reversed course, citing mounting criticism it received from state and local politicians, activists and community groups in and around Long Island City. The main arguments from the so-called resistance were that it would cause housing costs to skyrocket, drive out low-income residents and worsen congestion on the subway and streets. Others have distilled the story into three categories: (1) subsidies/corporate giveaways, (2) secrecy and backroom dealings and (3) corporate social responsibility and corporate behavior. On this episode of The Medium Rules, host Alan Baldachin is joined by Ari Wallach and Duff McDonald with a view to dissecting the various causes and effects, both short and long-term, implicated and exposed by the Amazon HQ2 debacle. Is this a story of corporate greed and Albany arrogance finally getting their respective comeuppance? Or, was the turning back of Amazon HQ2 an ahistorical blunder of epic proportions? How much should we care about community preservation, or is this just a nostalgic fever dream of a very vocal, activist minority? To what extent are we required to extrapolate the Amazon HQ2 into broader American political and social currents tracing back to Occupy Wall Street and the rise of the new left, or is the story much more localized in nature? Ari Wallach is the founder and CEO of Longpath Labs. We had the pleasure to connect with Ari for our very first episode of The Medium Rules last June. Longpath Labs is a 501(c)(3) organization whose mission is to promote and advocate long-term modes of thinking, synthesizing and responding to humanity's greatest long-term challenges. Duff McDonald is a first timer on The Medium Rules. Duff is a New York-based journalist and is the author, most recently, of The New York Times bestsellers The Golden Passport and The Firm. A long-time magazine writer, Duff has written for The New Yorker, Vanity Fair, New York Magazine, Esquire, Fortune, Business Week, Wired, Time, and other publications. Duff wrote the book review for the New York Times on Brad Stone's essential book on Amazon, The Everything Store. Duff is currently working on a book with Christiane Lemiuex about what makes entrepreneurs tick – Christiane is the founder and CEO of The Inside and a previous guest on The Medium Rules. Notwithstanding the accelerating advance of technology, or possibly because of it, humanity seems to be an “Intertidal” moment whereby the norms, institutions and in many cases the leaders we have long since trusted are in turbulence. There are many reasons for this anxiety, co-existing as it does with mind-boggling technological, economic, and social advancements. “Longpath” is a mindset that is quickly gaining cultural traction as a means of thinking and acting designed to foster connections with one another and with our future selves, allowing us to make the decisions necessary to ensure the human species flourishes and the planet thrives. The Medium Rules host, Alan Baldachin, is joined in the HBA Podcast Studio in New York City by Longpath Labs founder and CEO Ari Wallach to discuss the organization's philosophy, its work, and its ground game for promoting long-term thinking as a decision-making modality. As Ari explains, Longpath Labs is both an incubator and a movement builder dedicated to bringing Longpath thinking to address both humanity's greatest challenges as well as the more mundane day-to-day challenges we face as parents, teachers, coaches, community leaders, business leaders, and social and political activists.
