https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0e-3oeMO-0w&t=4s Podcast audio: Ayn Rand viewed the American founding's enshrinement of individuals rights as the greatest political achievement in human history. Yet the rising statism of the twentieth century dramatically undermined those ideals. In Rand's view, America needed a moral revolution: one that renounced the ethics of altruism and embraced the morality of self-interest. What would it take to achieve such a transformation? On Independence Day at the 2025 Objectivist Summer Conference, ARI fellow Ben Bayer took up this question in his provocative talk, “America Should Declare Independence from Altruism.” Bayer argues that it is not enough just to affirm the morality of self-interest in words. Most people — even those who claim to support liberty — remain psychologically dependent on the morality of self-sacrifice and so are unwilling to defend freedom on principle. To illustrate this dependency, Bayer offers an in-depth case study of the COVID lockdowns. He reminds us that these policies were imposed not just by Democrats but also by Republicans, the alleged defenders of American freedom. Republican leaders were cowed by moral pressure to impose shutdowns but have now worked hard to memory-hole their involvement. Bayer argues that Republicans' evasion of their own commitment to altruism dramatized underappreciated insights from Ayn Rand's views on the psychology of altruism. One of Bayer's most thought-provoking points is that the common pejorative use of the term “virtue signaling” reveals a lingering psychological dependence on altruism: critics mock those who merely signal “virtue” because they are unwilling to challenge the content of the signalers' moral beliefs directly. In the Q&A period, Bayer addresses such topics as: How altruism shaped America's post-9/11 foreign policy; Whether sweeping lockdowns can ever be justified; The enduring relevance of Rand's idea of the sanction of the victim; The problems with the concept of “woke.”

Tom Bilyeu takes us on a deep dive into the cautionary tale of Argentina—a country that once stood shoulder to shoulder with the world's wealthiest nations, only to crumble under the weight of hyperinflation, runaway debt, and political promises of “free stuff.” Drawing powerful parallels between Argentina's century-long decline and the current economic landscape in America, Tom unpacks the dangerous cycle created by debt-fueled policies, unchecked populism, and a culture that rewards taking over making. As the US inches closer to a tipping point with soaring debt and increasing political polarization, Tom explores the recurring patterns that have led countries astray and asks: Are we doomed to repeat Argentina's mistakes? Along the way, he introduces us to the key players and ideas shaping America's future—from Ayn Rand's philosophy of "makers vs. takers," to the rise of socialist policies in major cities, and the dramatic reforms in Argentina under Javier Milei. With a blend of historical insight, economic analysis, and actionable advice, this episode offers a roadmap for individuals, families, and policymakers on how to avoid economic disaster and reignite the spirit of innovation and prosperity. “Do it before you die.” Those five words sum up Carl Barney's advice to business leaders and other wealthy individuals to find a deeper level of success and satisfaction by “pre-questing” meaningful gifts to individuals and institutions — not in their wills — but while they can still witness the impact of their generosity. Carl, author of the new book The Happiness Experiment: A Revolutionary Way to Increase Happiness, is a philanthropist who grew wealthy as an educational entrepreneur. He is the founder of the Prometheus Foundation, which identifies and supports independent thinkers who have innovative ideas, work smart, follow through, and achieve results. The Foundation is guided by the philosophy of Ayn Rand, with a healthy portion of Aristotle mixed in. In his book, Carl makes a key distinction between philanthropy and pre-questing. While both are praiseworthy, pre-questing is a more personal way to express gratitude to those who've enriched your life, such as teachers, mentors, colleagues, and friends. Carl has found that making others happy will also make the giver happier. That translates to becoming a better leader, businessperson, family member, and friend. “It's not enough to feel grateful,” Carl says. “You have to express it — in ways that matter to the people who made a difference in your life.” Monday Morning Radio is hosted by the father-son duo of Dean and Maxwell Rotbart. “Happiness is not an event. It's a little step by step by step process.” Happiness isn't something that just happens—it's something you build. The key lies in cultivating self-wisdom and deliberately shaping your inner world to respond better to life's external conditions. Real happiness grows from inside out, and the secret isn't in chasing thrills but in forming a happiness plan—simple steps you can take to make your life feel more fulfilling. Carl Barney shares how a radical act of generosity—giving his inheritance to loved ones before his death—sparked the creation of “happiness plans” that transformed lives. He explains that the happiness experiment isn't just about fleeting joy, but about growing self-awareness and living intentionally with the support of coaching, reflection, and values-aligned action. Carl is an entrepreneur and philanthropist who founded the Prometheus Foundation and authored The Happiness Experiment. Deeply inspired by Aristotle and Ayn Rand, he champions rational, life-loving philosophy and supports others in crafting lives of meaning and joy. Deki, who recently presented on this topic at MoneroKon, outlines Rand's key philosophical pillars—objective reality, reason, rational self-interest, free market capitalism, and privacy—and argues that these values closely align with the principles behind decentralized crypto. The two explore Rand's likely support for privacy-focused coins like Monero over state-aligned cryptocurrencies, discuss her novels Atlas Shrugged and The Fountainhead, and reflect on how philosophical literacy can guide resistance to government overreach. It's a good day to be a Geeky Stoics subscriber here on Substack! You all get first access to this week's video conversations with Ryan Holiday of the Daily Stoic. I told you about the trip to Palm Springs, and it was to moderate this panel tackling the differences and overlaps of Stoicism and Objectivism. To recap: Stoicism is ancient Greek and Roman philosophy rooted in self-mastery, emotional regulation, and letting go of things beyond your control. Objectivism took form post-World War II through the philosopher and writer Ayn Rand. It is about self-focus, individual fulfillment, and “rational egoism” or putting yourself first as a matter of rational thought.Ryan Holiday is famed for his books, "The Obstacle Is the Way," "Ego Is the Enemy," "The Daily Stoic," "Stillness Is the Key", “Courage Is Calling” and his new book “Wisdom Takes Work” comes out this fall. Millions of people receive his daily emails and podcasts, and most of what Geeky Stoics does would not exist without his work. It was cool to meet him and ask him some questions about the life well-lived. Thanks for reading Geeky Stoics! Subscribe for free to receive new posts and support my work. Some takeawaysHoliday framed freedom as the opportunity for self-discipline. Drawing on figures like Marcus Aurelius, Epictetus, and even Eisenhower, he emphasized that inner liberty (freedom from passion, chaos, and internal compulsion) is central to Stoic ethics. Stoicism holds that true freedom is achieved through mastery of the self, rather than simple absence of constraint. In Ryan's books, he has called this “the empire between your ears”. Even a person living in chains cannot be truly forced to vacate their freedom of thought and action. For Stoics, unchecked liberty is a quick road to being enslaved by desire, and so self-restraint is not seen as a limitation but as a form of empowerment. This is an area I tend to strongly agree on. Richards, representing Ayn Rand's Objectivism, defined freedom as freedom from coercion (force or fraud) that threatens one's ability to think, act, and pursue personal happiness. Objectivism prioritizes the individual's rational mind as the highest tool for flourishing, arguing that the pursuit of joy and personal achievement is the purpose of freedom. It's not dismissive of self-discipline, and so Richards emphasized how a person can harm oneself with the pursuit of constant vice. Enjoying the panel discussion? Now check out our 1-on-1 interview with Ryan Holiday about parenting, Hamilton, and philosophyOverlap and Contrast on the panel Both philosophies value rationality, personal responsibility, and civic virtue. However, Stoicism is inward-facing, concerned with moral resilience and inner peace, while Objectivism is outward-facing, focused on creative achievement and individual flourishing.Holiday illustrated Stoic freedom with the example of Epictetus—a slave who, despite literal bondage, enjoyed greater internal freedom than Rome's elite who had to suck up to tyrants to make a living. Richards acknowledged this but argued that Objectivism's strength lies in its systematic approach, beginning with metaphysics and epistemology, and ending in ethics and politics centered on the primacy of the individual. It's very anti-collectivist. That point on collectivism is important because it's perhaps the most pointed area of disagreement. Most Stoics would say that all “goods” must be considered for the whole of a community. Objectivists, or Ayn Rand, did not believe “the public” even exists. Her philosophical focus was on living, breathing things, and she rejected the notion that the disjointed “we” was a thing worthy of acknowledgement. I am alive. The “public” is not. I have interests. The public does not. Stoics don't buy this, especially not Ryan Holiday. Now, go enjoy the discussion and tell us what you thought in the comments below.
