Time flies when you're having fun. Time moves excruciatingly slowly when you are sleep deprived and can't seem to get the baby down for a nap. What do these things have in common? They don't last forever. We are going to talk about just how fast things move when it comes to raising kids and why we hate the phrase "I miss those days." "It Won't Be Like This For Long" by Darius Rucker is the perfect song to describe this moment in time. They also touch on the fact that when you are in the middle of it you aren't always the most receptive to hearing about how people miss it. Dave needs to go and research the word Kairos as well. You may have heard of Monument Records recording artist Walker Hayes from his hit “Fancy Like” which topped every country music sales and streaming chart, spent more than six months at the No. 1 spot on the Billboard Hot Country Songs Chart and also gave Walker his first GRAMMY Award nomination as an artist for Best Country Song. Another thing you may or may not know, is that Walker had his own struggles with Alcohol and through his success is now sharing this journey on his most recent project, Sober Thoughts. Walker finds himself where he so often does – letting fans into his world in a way only he can do. Hayes has always written about his personal experiences from a place of deep authenticity and, sometimes brutal, truth – sharing his fears, insecurities, and demons with the world. We watch him do this on “AA” where he was struggling to stay sober after a whirlwind year, or on “Beer in the Fridge” when he sings “guess I've got to live without you now, cause I couldn't live without that beer in the fridge” during a particularly difficult time where he and his wife Laney were struggling with his addiction. But really, what Walker does with his music, is make people feel seen. This has never been truer than on new single “Same Drunk,” where he sings that everyone is dealing with something and were all in it together. Walker has performed his music, including the Double-Platinum RIAA certified hit “You Broke Up With Me,” to national audiences on Good Morning America, Late Night with Seth Meyers, The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon and TODAY, and he was profiled for CBS Sunday Morning. He just announced his next headlining tour, The Same Drunk Tour, which follows his last arena tours The Duck Buck Tour and the Glad You're Here Tour. The Glad You're Here Tour is the same title as the book Hayes released in 2022 with his best friend, Craig Allen Cooper, detailing his journey to finding Christ. fWotD Episode 2408: White Horse (Taylor Swift song) Welcome to featured Wiki of the Day where we read the summary of the featured Wikipedia article every day.The featured article for Friday, 8 December 2023 is White Horse (Taylor Swift song)."White Horse" is a song by the American singer-songwriter Taylor Swift and the second single from her second studio album, Fearless (2008). Big Machine Records released the track to US country radio on December 8, 2008. Swift wrote "White Horse" with Liz Rose and produced it with Nathan Chapman. An understated country pop ballad, the song is driven by a finger-picked guitar and includes piano and cello accents. The lyrics incorporate fairy-tale imagery of princesses and white horses: a narrator is heartbroken on realizing that her boyfriend is not an ideal figure like she thought, and in the end she leaves her town with hopes of finding somebody more worthy.Music critics lauded "White Horse" for what they deemed a somber production and a portrayal of universal feelings arising from heartbreak, but some found the lyrics uncreative. At the 2010 Grammy Awards, the track won Best Country Song and Best Female Country Vocal Performance. In the United States, the single peaked at number 13 on the Billboard Hot 100 and number two on the Hot Country Songs chart, and the Recording Industry Association of America (RIAA) certified it double platinum. The song also charted in Australia, Canada, and the United Kingdom; it received certifications in the first two countries.Trey Fanjoy directed the song's music video, which depicts Swift reliving memories with her ex-boyfriend and her discovery of his infidelity after having ended their relationship through a phone call. The video premiered on February 7, 2009, on CMT, and it became the first video to debut at number one on the network's countdown. SUMMARY:Grammy-nominated artist and songwriter Dave Barnes joins us to chat about his recording career, his hits for other artists, and his latest album that was inspired from an entire year listening to nothing but the BeatlesPART ONE:Scott and Paul talk about concept albums and reveal their favoritesPART TWO:Our in-depth conversation with Dave BarnesABOUT DAVE BARNES:Nashville-based singer, songwriter, musician, podcaster and comedian Dave Barnes began his professional life as an indie touring musician in the early 2000s. After a couple of critically-acclaimed albums, he signed with Razor & Tie Records and released his third full-length studio effort, Me and You and the World. The follow-up album, What We Want, What We Get, included the single “God Gave Me You,” which became a Top 5 Contemporary Christian hit for Dave and was subsequently recorded by Blake Shelton. The cover version became a #1 hit on country radio, went five times Platinum, and earned Dave a Grammy nomination for Best Country Song and a CMA nomination for Song of the Year. He found additional success writing with and for other country artists, including Thomas Rhett and Maren Morris's #1 duet “Craving You,” Carrie Underwood's “Kingdom,” and “Like a Lady,” a Top 20 single by Lady A. The list of artists who have recorded his songs also includes Reba McEntire, Tim McGraw, and Christian artist Bethany Dillon, who scored a Top 5 hit with “All I Need.” Drawn to thematic projects, Dave has released two Christmas albums, two Valentine's Day LPs, and an album paying tribute to the sounds of '70s Southern California called Carry On, San Vicente. To date, he has released over a dozen full-length studio albums. The most recent, Featherbrained Wealth Motel, came after a year Dave spent listening solely to The Beatles.
#935 - Five O'Clock Somewhere - Don Rollins & Jim "Moose" Brown Interview Are you here? …. Just where are you? Whether you're in New York or Los Angeles, well, really anywhere in the world—five o'clock is synonymous with calling it a day and enjoying a cold beverage. Maybe your cold drink is the famous Hurricane cocktail made famous by Pat O'Brien's bar in New Orleans. We heard our friend Dave Hooser was hanging around in the French Quarter, but he didn't necessarily wait till five o'clock. He knew it was…five o'clock (pause) somewhere. Most of you know the song “It's Five O'Clock Somewhere” that was recorded and made famous by Alan Jackson and the late Jimmy Buffett. It became a very important song for Jimmy Buffett. “It's Five O'Clock Somewhere” remains Jimmy Buffett's only #1 hit. He performed it close to 600 times over the last 20 years. In fact, Jimmy sang it as a duet with Mac McAnally at his very last performance on July 2nd, 2023. Your host Paul Leslie had the honor and pleasure of interviewing Don Rollins and Jim “Moose” Brown, the two songwriters who wrote the hit “It's Five O'Clock Somewhere.” The interview took place in a recording studio in Nashville, Tennessee—years and years ago. We'll play it shortly. “It's Five O Clock Somewhere” written by Rollins & Brown catapulted Jimmy Buffett even more into the public spotlight and gave him lots of airplay on country radio. It spent 8 non-consecutive weeks at #1 on the Billboard Hot Country Songs chart in the Summer of 2003. The song also won the CMA Award for Vocal Event of the Year as well as the Grammy for Best Country Song of 2003. It was also #17 on the US Hot 100 making it the most successful pop hit for both Alan Jackson and Jimmy Buffett. Billboard named “It's Five O'Clock Somewhere” as the Most Played Country Song in 2003. Right quick: The Paul Leslie Hour has been archiving and distributing interviews for more than 19 years. It's made possible in part by listeners and viewers like you. Give yourself and others the gift of stories, just go right here. I think it's time we played this interview with Don Rollins and Jim “Moose” Brown, two very talented songwriters, right here on The Paul Leslie Hour.

#932 - Josh Kear The Josh Kear Interview is featured on The Paul Leslie Hour. Are you here? One of the things we like most about The Paul Leslie Hour is that we can uncover something that went out over the radio years ago and listen to it in the here… and now. People just like you listen to these interviews totally in the present. The present we're in. We're going to give this interview with Grammy award-winning songwriter Josh Kear a spin. Back in 2007, three songs co-written by Kear entered the country charts: “That's How They Do It in Dixie” by Hank Williams, Jr., “Before He Cheats” by Carrie Underwood and “Bama Breeze” by Jimmy Buffett. (Josh wrote the Buffett track with Chris Tompkins and Mark Irwin) The same year “Before He Cheats” won the Single of the Year Award at the Country Music Association Awards. A few months later, it won the Grammy Award for Best Country Song. It's one of the longest-charting hits in Billboard history. Josh Kear did this interview with Paul Edward Leslie to talk about some of his famous songs and also about “Blue Pearl Paradise,” his somewhat underground album of original island songs. Josh is such a nice guy he sent us the demo of “Bama Breeze” to play and we'll all listen to that together. Before you forget, remember to subscribe to Paul Leslie's YouTube channel and also like this video and leave a comment. You won't want to miss any of our interviews or reviews so ring that bell. Now let's hear from our special guest Josh Kear. Whatdya say? It's time we listened. Together.

In this episode, Laura and Tracy sit down with songwriter, producer and publisher Luke Laird. Luke talks the magic of writers' rounds, being reluctant to ask for help, letting go of jealousy and the nitty gritty details of his early publishing deals. Laura also shares the story of a pivotal moment that lead to her being a songwriter. Ferocious talent, wit, and sincere humility rarely come together like they do in Grammy winner Luke Laird. Since moving to Nashville from a small farming town in Pennsylvania, Laird has become one of country and pop's top songwriters and producers. The numbers are staggering: 52 radio singles –– 24 of which were Billboard No. 1 hits and 5 of which were in the Top 5 –– 2 Billboard No. 1 singles as a producer, and more than 125 released cuts fill his catalog. In four separate years, every single released that Laird wrote peaked at No. 1 on the Billboard charts. He earned ACM Songwriter of the Year honors in 2015, and was named BMI Songwriter of the Year in 2012. As a producer, Laird has helped shape some of music's most critically acclaimed projects of the last decade. He co-produced Kacey Musgraves' 2013 debut, Same Trailer, Different Park, which garnered Grammy honors for Best Country Album and an ACM Album of the Year win. In 2015, he returned to the studio with Musgraves to co-produce her triumphant sophomore release, Pageant Material. Laird earned his second Grammy for Best Country Song with Musgraves' “Space Cowboy” in 2019. He also has producer credits on Thomas Rhett, Ingrid Michaelson, Brett Eldredge, Steve Moakler, Everette, Kassi Ashton, Anna Vaus and more. A slew of Grammy, ACM, CMA, and other nominations line Laird's resume, which also includes six CMA Triple Play Awards, four NSAI “Songs I Wish I'd Written” Awards, the 2012 BMI Country Song of the Year trophy for Rodney Atkins' “Take a Back Road,” and more. His list of No. 1 singles reads like a carefully curated playlist of soulful contemporary country: “Hard To Forget” (Sam Hunt); “Fast” and “I See You” (Luke Bryan); “Head Over Boots” (Jon Pardi); “T-Shirt” (Thomas Rhett); “Gonna” and “Hillbilly Bone” (Blake Shelton); “Talladega,” “Give Me Back My Hometown,” and “Drink In My Hand” (Eric Church); “American Kids” (Kenny Chesney); “Sunshine & Whiskey” (Frankie Ballard); “One of Those Nights” (Tim McGraw); “Downtown” (Lady Antebellum); “Somebody's Heartbreak” (Hunter Hayes); “Beat This Summer” (Brad Paisley); “Pontoon” (Little Big Town); “You” (Chris Young); “A Little Bit Stronger” (Sara Evans); “Take A Back Road” (Rodney Atkins); and “Temporary Home,” “Undo It,” “So Small,” and “Last Name” (Carrie Underwood). Other artists who have recorded Laird-penned songs represent a jaw-dropping grab bag of genres: George Strait, Maren Morris, Dierks Bentley, Miranda Lambert, Brandy Clark, Toby Keith, Jake Owen, Steve Moakler, Sister Hazel, Ingrid Michaelson, Ashley Monroe, Sam Hunt, Angaleena Presley, Nikki Lane, Darius Rucker, Jason Aldean, Sheryl Crow, Brett Eldredge, Florida Georgia Line, Ne-Yo, Neal McCoy, Amy Grant, and many more. Laird recently released his own record, Music Row, that offers an intimate look into his journey from Hartstown to Nashville. The first-ever record from one of music's most trusted creators and collaborators, Music Row is a songwriter's story, traversing childhood, grief, addiction, family, and the community he loves. The songs are deeply personal and sometimes raw, all delivered by the songwriter himself. Today, Laird writes for and co-owns Nashville-based publishing and management company Creative Nation with his wife, Beth. Learn more about your ad choices. Visit megaphone.fm/adchoices

In episode 57 I talk to Courtney Marie Andrews about Lucinda Williams, an American singer, songwriter, and musician. She recorded her first two albums: Ramblin' on My Mind (1979) and Happy Woman Blues (1980), in a traditional country and blues style that received critical praise but little public or radio attention. In 1988, she released her third album, Lucinda Williams, to widespread critical acclaim. Widely regarded as "an Americana classic", the album also features "Passionate Kisses", a song later recorded by Mary Chapin Carpenter for her 1992 album Come On Come On, which garnered Williams her first Grammy Award for Best Country Song in 1994. Known for working slowly, Williams' fourth album; Sweet Old World, appeared four years later in 1992. Sweet Old World was met with further critical acclaim, and was voted the 11th best album of 1992 in The Village Voice's Pazz & Jop, an annual poll of prominent music critics. Robert Christgau, the poll's creator, ranked it 6th on his own year-end list, later writing that the album, as well as Lucinda Williams, were "gorgeous, flawless, brilliant".

EPISODE 15 - EXTERNAL Version for Non-Spotify Listeners! Shout out to all those from a small town! In high school I lived in a town of 500 people - everyone knew everyone! "if you haven't heard a rumor by noon, Start one!" was one of the first lessons that I learned! Yes, living in a small town has some disadvantages - like, we didn't have a stoplight or a drive thru - I had to drive to larger community with my driving instructor to experience that! The one thing that I loved about a small town was the community! Being known, cared for and recognized was a great benefit of small town life! So, if you are listening to this today, and you find yourself in a small community, these two songs celebrate you! You are the star of this episode! Two songs today for you - Miranda Lambert - Famous in a small town and John Mellencamp - Small Town "Famous in a Small Town" is a song co-written and recorded by American country music artist Miranda Lambert. As the writer of songs including Brooks and Dunn's “Believe” to Blake Shelton's “Boys ‘Round Here” to Morgan Wallen's “Chasin' You”, he has amassed over 350 cuts, 130 singles, and 29 #1's. After moving to Nashville in 1985 to pursue a career in songwriting, he received his first chart success after having co-written “The Only One” from Roy Orbison's album, Mystery Girl. SUMMARY:Our guest on this episode of Songcraft is Natalie Hemby, a six-time Grammy nominee and two-time winner who has earned five CMA Song of the Year nominations and was named Music Row magazine's 2021 Female Songwriter of the Year. Her songs have been recorded by Kacey Musgraves, Alicia Keys, Lady Gaga, Maren Morris, Ed Sheeran, Sheryl Crow, Dierks Bentley, Eli Young Band, Kelly Clarkson, Chris Isaak, Blake Shelton, Lee Ann Womack, and many others. We last spoke with Natalie in 2017, but we catch up with her today to find out more about her life as a behind the scenes songwriter, her work with supergroup The Highwomen, and her critically-acclaimed solo album Pins and Needles. PART ONE - 2:49Scott and Paul chat about Pearl Snap Studios and set the stage for this very special "old friends" episode.PART TWO - 6:02They guys welcome longtime friend and fellow music geek David Manning to argue about beloved songs that they actually hate. PART THREE - 39:20Our in-depth conversation with Natalie HembyABOUT NATALIE HEMBY:When we first spoke with Natalie Hemby in 2017 she'd already racked up three CMA Song of the Year nominations and written a half dozen #1 singles, including “Pontoon” and “Tornado” by Little Big Town, “Downtown” by Lady A, “You Look Like I Need a Drink” by Justin Moore, and Miranda Lambert's “White Liar” and “Automatic,” the latter of which was named ACM Song of the Year and snagged Natalie her first Grammy nomination for Best Country Song. In the five years since then, her songwriting star has continued to rise. She co-wrote three songs on Kacey Musgraves' Golden Hour, which won the Grammy for Album of the Year—across all categories—and earned Natalie a CMA Song of the Year nomination for “Rainbow.” Natalie co-wrote two songs with Lady Gaga for the soundtrack to A Star is Born, including Song of the Year Grammy nominee “Always Remember Us This Way” and the Grammy winner for Best Song Written for Visual Media, “I'll Never Love Again.” She has scored additional #1 hits with Jon Pardi's “Heartache Medication,” as well as Miranda Lambert's “Bluebird,” which was nominated for both CMA and ACM Song of the Year, and the Best Country Song Grammy. Natalie beat herself in that Grammy category when she won the Best Country Song honors for “Crowded Table,” which she wrote with Lori McKenna and Brandi Carlile. The song was recorded by the supergroup The Highwomen, of which Natalie is a member alongside Carlile, Marren Morris, and Amanda Shires. “Crowded Table” was also named Song of the Year by the Americana Music Association, while The Highwomen won Americana Album of the Year and Duo or Group of the Year. Recent pop cuts, including Kelly Clarkson's “I Dare You” and Ed Sheeran's “Love in Slow Motion,” illustrate Natalie's versatility and underscore why she was named Music Row magazine's 2021 Female Songwriter of the Year. In addition to her work with The Highwomen, Natalie's been flexing her considerable artist muscles recently with the release of her album Pins and Needles, which PopMatters calls “a phenomenal album from an artist coming into full possession of her gifts.”
