This podcast episode is all about Yoga Nidra, a wonderful relaxation meditation technique developed by the great yoga adept Swami Satyananda Saraswati of the Bihar School of Yoga in India. Yoga Nidra, as a meditation technique, enables you to remain awake and alert as you venture into the deep sleep state. Instead of becoming unconscious, you experience an exalted state of consciousness and a deep, blissful connection to the highest Self. We describe Yoga Nidra:How it enables you to systematically relax each part of your physical body and move your awareness to your subtle layers, emotions, and deeper mind. As you do this, you relax and rejuvenate your whole self. The three stages of Yoga Nidra, which include recuperation from exhaustion, purification of old tensions and traumas from the unconscious mind, and the attainment of an exalted state of consciousness. The importance of Yoga Nidra for deep rest and how it can be used to overcome the negative effects of sleep disturbance and insomnia. How it removes deep-seated tensionsYoga Nidra in therapy and psychotherapy How to practice Yoga Nidra using a guided MP3.Included in this podcast is the first track from Big Shakti's Introduction to Meditation and Yoga Nidra MP3 series. To purchase Big Shakti's Introduction to Meditation and Yoga Nidra MP3 series, click here.Subscribe to our eNewsletter and receive substantial discounts on products https://bigshakti.comBig Shakti podcast https://bigshakti.com/podcast/For more information on Big Shakti meditations, go to https://bigshakti.com/meditations/For more information on Big Shakti's Yoga and Meditation Courses, go to https://bigshakti.com/courses/For information regarding Jayne Stevenson's intuitive healing and dream therapy practice, go to https://bigshakti.com/about/jayne-stevenson/For information regarding Dr Swami Shankardev's medical and psychotherapy practice, go to https://bigshakti.com/about/dr-swami-shankardev-saraswati/Big Shakti's YouTube Channel https://www.youtube.com/@BigShakti

Manish Vyas: India, its Paths, Traditions, Yoga, Music, Mantra, Spirituality

At the beginning, Yoga was not written down anywhere, the teachings were passed by the Guru to a disciple personally. The first books where Yoga is mentioned were the ancient Tantras and later the Vedas, then the Upanishads expanded deeper about it. Based on all this, much later Patanjali wrote the Yoga Sutras (in Sanskrit) as an eight-fold path: yama, niyama, asana, pranayama, pratyahara, dharana, dhyana, samadhi. Therefore, the meaning of yoga and the path of yoga is not what frequently many think when relating it only to exercise, stretching, bending, breathing practices, or asana. It is so much more than that! The science of Yoga applies itself to all aspects of life. Yoga means choosing a lifestyle of excellence and awareness in everything that we do and live according to that. So ideally, it should to be understood in this direction, in order to focus on this path with an earnest approach and to benefit from it beyond the aspects of the physical plane which are only temporary and worldly in nature. The path of Yoga as any other spiritual path in India is to awaken and eventually come to the realization that we are not the body, so too much focus on the body would defeat its own purpose. The so called 'modernization' does not justify the disappearance of the key and fundamental aspects of Yoga and its nature -- otherwise it would not be Yoga, but something else. This time Manish is interviewing Arpit Agrawal, an experienced Yoga teacher from Rishikesh India who studied in the traditional Bihar School of Yoga, discussing different aspects of Yoga and Yoga learning, which give a clear scenario of the vastness and richness of this tradition. The interview also includes clarifications about types of yoga which have traditionally been part of the true yogic path since ancient times, as well as certain yoga styles which have developed or become popular in the west which are not truly reflecting the real Yoga tradition. One of these is 'Kundalini Yoga'. Although kundalini yoga practices exists in India, they have truly little to do with what became so popular in the USA and then was adopted around the world. That practice is honestly not the real tradition with the roots in our Indian Yoga heritage, and each practitioner should at least have the right to know this, how it developed, where it came from and which practices are authentic and which ones are not, as many styles had been basically developed mainly for yoga-commercialization, packaged in an attractive way to catch followers attention. It is ok if one practices that if one likes it, but one should know what is what.We thank Arpit so much for this interesting and clarifying interview, where we can easily distinguish the pillars on this path, and understand the basis of this amazing practice of Yoga, with roots in ancient India and widely adopted by now in almost each corner of the world."Asana is for sure important, to keep yourself healthy. And we need some kind of flexibility as well, as we say the higher purpose of yoga (asana) is to sit in meditation for longer time, and those things come by the yoga asana. So it's important only for that purpose. But yoga asana is only one limb of yoga, it's not everything. Yoga tells you how to live, how to eat, how to walk, how to practice… everything comes from yoga. It's like developing the awareness on how to do any action." Arpit AgrawalAbout Arpit :Sri Yoga Ashram, Rishikesh @yogawitharpit / www.sriyogaashram.comThis podcast is also transcribed in our blog, you can read it here: https://www.manishvyas.ch/post/_yoga watch related youtube video: https://youtu.be/qRmKJ_nFyLQ

We moor the boat in the small harbor, near the large railway bridge that crosses the Ganges here. I throw my backpack ashore, get off the boat and am happy to have solid ground under my feet again. We walk the short distance from the jetty through the busy little town to the yoga school. As in all of India, cows blend into the cityscape, grazing on the roadside and bringing the traffic to a standstill. By worshiping cows, Hindus express their gratitude. Cows are people's oldest domestic animals and helps to carry heavy loads, provide people with milk, pull the plow, provide fertilizer for the fields and thus ensure a rich harvest. Adoration of cows is representative of compassion for all living beings, for all animals that have no voice to make themselves heard. The protection of the cows shows the respect for god's creation and the gratitude for nature, which nourishes people and gives them a home.

Through practice and repetition, we can teach ourselves all skills. I start my journey up north with a boat trip. Hari offers me to accompany his brother Gaurav on his boat, who is on his way to the Bihar School of Yoga, in Munger. I accept with gratitude and soon sit next to Gaurav in a narrow, long wooden boat that glides through the sluggish water. Yes, now I finally feel like I'm on my way. I've spent the last 2 nights outdoors and I already feel carefree. The river is several hundred meters wide, it is one of the most important waterways in India. It connects Calcutta with the north of the country. There are mainly ferry boats and fishermen on the river. With every mile we ship north, I leave my daily routines behind. It is good for me to turn my back on the past and enjoy the very moment The green landscape passes me and I doze off in the heat and enjoy the warm wind. On the first evening of our trip to Bihar, after a long boat ride, we dock at a jetty.

In this podcast I will be talking briefly about the classical codes of conduct prescribed by the Yoga Sutras and then we will delve into more modern lifestyle practices that are greatly needed in our world today. In Classical Yoga, we study the Yoga Sutras and the eight limbs of Patanjali's yoga or Raja yoga, the royal yoga! These are: Yamas – codes of social conduct Niyamas – codes of personal conduct Asanas – the poses of yoga Pranayama – the breathing practices that enhance our life force Pratyahara – withdrawing the awareness from the sensorial world Dharana – being able to concentrate and focus Dhyana – the state of meditation whereby the concentration is extended Samadhi – merging of the individual consciousness with the universal consciousness The idea here is that we must first work on ourselves through the practice of the codes of conduct or we will continue to have disturbing mental turmoil that will prevent us from moving into the internal practices. In other words, the mind will always be thinking about every little detail of our external life – all of the feelings, the conversations, the play of our ego, our likes and dislikes – it will remain unsettled and unable to tap into the internal sense of peace and wholeness that exists in each of us. The five yamas ask us to avoid harming others or ourselves, lying, stealing, wasting energy, and possessiveness. The five niyamas ask us to live a clean life, to value contentment, to know our needs and not exceed them, to engage in self-study and connect with inspiration, and to surrender to something greater than ourselves. These are all quite lofty goals, but it is said that if you can embody even one of them fully it will lead you into the rest. Just one. But in modern yoga practice we actually see that most people concentrate on the physical practices, the asanas. Maybe some engage in some breathing and meditation practices, but it seems to me that most are looking to yoga as something to be done on the mat or the meditation cushion for a specific period of time and hoping it will improve their daily lives. And it does to a certain extent. Practitioners may feel better in their bodies, have more energy and feel calmer after practicing – these are all good things.  Don't get me wrong. This spectrum of yoga participation serves its purpose. But if you want to be less reactive to life's challenges, to feel more connected to the world around you, to evolve your consciousness and be the best version of you that you can be in this lifetime, then you will need to take yoga off the mat and into your life more. You will need to make yoga your lifestyle. Over the last few years, the Bihar School of Yoga in India has been emphasizing a set of six Lifestyle Yamas and Niyamas to support bringing yoga more fully into daily life. Given the worldwide pandemic and the political upheaval within the US, today I will be discussing the lifestyle yama and niyama of forgiveness and respect. This pair is especially useful in dealing with anger and there seems to be an epidemic of anger. Not just political anger, but anger that our lives have been turned upside down by the pandemic. Anger that we can't do everything we want to do. Let's start with forgiveness. How forgiving are you? Give yourself a ranking of 0-5 whereby 5 is the most forgiving. Now can you bring to mind some time in the past when you needed to practice forgiveness. Can you do it? Even as you recall it now, what feeling comes up inside of you? Sadness, hurt, anger? And as you recall this, how do you feel about the other person? Are your thoughts negative? To truly forgive means to let go of feelings of resentment, anger or hurt. Are you still holding on to those feelings? Sometimes we are masochistic about forgiveness. We are stuck in our pattern of suffering. It seems to be a pattern of human behavior that we are more likely to dwell on the negative in our lives than the positive. Think about your daily conversations. Don't most people share more about their negative experiences than their positive? It's more entertaining to talk about something bad that happened. It is easy to say we forgive but hard to truly release the negative feelings and experience freedom from them. To release the resentment in your heart is the true challenge. It takes strength and courage. “The weak can never forgive. Forgiveness is the attribute of the strong.” Mahatma Gandhi So we need to make it a yoga practice of forgiveness. Not so much for the benefit of the other person, but for our own benefit! Let's go back to our forgiveness exercise-the one where you remembered an interaction that needed you to forgive. Once again think about it and see what feeling arises again. It can be the same feeling. And then think about the other person in the interaction, but this time, instead of a negative feeling about that person from that particular interaction, can you think of a positive quality about that person? Everyone has some positive quality after all. Is it hard or easy? Now from your heart, offer forgiveness again. It can just be a mental process, not in person. How do you feel now? Has the feeling changed from the beginning of the process when you first recalled the situation? Can you smile? Keep practicing this sequence until you can smile and then you can let go of that interaction and start working on another. After all, most of us need to do this work and can benefit greatly from it. We usually have more than one. We may become more conscious of the intricacies of our interactions and are more likely to forgive and move forward without having to pin fault on either participant. In yoga you may have heard people use the word namaste. The lifestyle niyama in this pair is namaskara. They both have similar meanings. Namaste means salutations to you. Namaskara means salutations to you with respect. It's a more formal greeting. Both greetings are done by placing the palms of the hands together in front of the heart and bowing the head. Namaskara is a way of connecting and honoring someone while understanding that this person contains inherent goodness that is also a reflection of you. Some will say it means the divine in me sees the divine in you, or the light in me connects to the light in you. It is an expression of humility. It is an acknowledgment of the value of others. Therefore, it can be an act of ego management. Too often we greet others as a social norm, but not with sincerity. “Hi, how are you?” is expressed and the person may not even look at the other in the eyes, may keep moving without even waiting for an answer or they wait briefly expecting “Fine, how about you?” But what happens to you when someone looks you in the eyes, smiles and sincerely asks, “how are you?” It touches your heart, doesn't it? Even if the interaction is just for a minute or less? It is my feeling that we need this now more than ever. We need to connect in this time of social distancing, isolation and insecurity of “the other” and their politics. It is the time to practice Namaskara. It doesn't mean you actually have to use that word but use the essence of what it means. Say hello with feeling and sincerity, with humility and respect and let that feeling reach from your heart to the heart of each person you greet. See each person as a reflection of you. It doesn't take a huge commitment or very much time at all to make someone smile by reaching out to them with a sincere greeting and inquiry. It takes just practice. And one way to keep up this practice is to keep track at the end of each day, how many people did you greet in this fashion? Through the recognition and acknowledgement of our negativity we provide the basis for developing positivity. See your strength in being able to look at your weaknesses and let your strengths grow. As we live through this pandemic and the political landscape of divisiveness, these two practices, forgiveness and namaskara, will support the best parts in you. Make a resolve to “thin out” your negative nature. As my guru says, “Be sincere, serious and committed.” Over time, it will become easier to develop new neural pathways to a more positive nature. The world needs a positive you!

Melanie Phillips built up loss over her lifetime, as everyone does. When her partner committed suicide, however, she found that all of that loss and grief she never dealt with became exposed. She came out of her struggle with loss with new knowledge of the grieving process and with a profound desire to help other deal with loss. Melanie and Cate discuss the importance of building up resiliency with good habits before life gets tough. It is so much easier to establish those habits when we are at a good place in our lives. That way, when the going gets tough, we are better prepared to handle our losses. The beauty about loss is that it gives us a great time to really get rid of what is not working. By decluttering and seeing the essentials, we can restructure our lives to better fit our needs. Melanie speaks to the power of relishing in the time that we have available to us, and really cherishing our precious and delicate lives.   What you’ll get out of tuning in: How to overcome grief and loss How to build resilience Why solid habits help address grief   Links Mentioned in the Episode: Melanie’s Book “We are a Microcosm of the Macrocosm” Preview “Living After Loss” - Preview   Common Links: Melanie’s Book “We are a Microcosm of the Macrocosm” Preview “Living After Loss” - Preview Body Thrive Book Banyan Botanicals     Show Highlights: 3:10 - Over time we find that our grief accumulates. When life and loss happens, and we aren’t prepared with the tools to understand or navigate the process, we will break down and not necessarily break through. 6:00 -  When we are addressing health issues with Ayurveda, we can look at it as a bucket of doshas that can accumulate in the physiology. It can overflow with disease, and Ayurvedic medicine can find many points to address that accumulation of disease through minute changes in our habits. 7:30 - The way that we unravel our grief really impact our experience. By establishing a moment-to-moment awareness we can better address our habits and really understand what we are feeling. 18:05 - It is important to recognize how delicate and precious life is every day. That way we can revel in the moments and enjoy them for what they are while we are present in this life. 21:20 - Address grief really involves addressing what we truly need at that time. Whether it be sleeping early, or eating only when we are hungry, these habits provide structure and foundation for the healing process to take place.   Your Favorite Quotes: “In terms of the daily and seasonal process there is such an emphasis on digesting what’s arising.” - Cate Stillman “There is an experience that as a human being you are designed to have and it has so much to do with clarity of your consciousness permeating through your cells.” - Cate Stillman “Stay open to what you need not what you think you need.” - Melanie Phillips “Every time we are resisting reality - what is - it creates suffering.”  - Melanie Phillips   Guest BIO: Melanie Phillips (BFA, E-RYT, CAS) is a certified Clinical Ayurvedic Specialist with advanced training under the direction of Dr. Vasant Lad, one of the leading pioneers of Ayurvedic Medicine in North America. She had paranormal experiences & was given resources to study about yoga & to work with a paranormal psychologist. From there, she deepened her studies for many years by learning about breathwork, hypnotherapy (from Brian Weiss & Dolores Cannon), yoga philosophy and lifestyle at the Bihar School of Yoga & meditation. A pilgrim, she traveled by horseback for a year and a half around South America, introducing fire dancing and yoga choreography to the unprivileged people in the mountains of Peru with Nomads United, before she settled in Costa Rica 16 years ago. Now, she practices the Yoga of Life, without putting labels or trying to market herself in an inauthentic way. Her work is a culmination of her experiences & knowledge. She wants to see yoga remain what it really is & shares the message that we don't all need to quit everything, become yoga teachers and monks, and live in the jungle in order to be spiritual. “The world needs all professions, not just yoga teachers. We can always transform the work that we do into something beautiful. Anything we can do to go back to nature is they key - not that we have to release or get rid of our lives.” She talks about the need for community gathering centers in big cities where people can connect and experience a tribe, a place where one can LIVE yoga or spirituality. She's frustrated with centers and studios that give employment to yoga teachers based on their social media followings and not based on their merit and it causes her to question the integrity of these places. She believes we need to find a balance with yoga as a profession and yoga as a philosophy, and always remain in our authenticity.
