(2:11) Caden mentions that not every InsureTech or IndieTech company is a good fit for your agency and its goals, so it's important to be unbiased and consider the specific needs and market of your agency before jumping on the latest buzzword or trend. (4:57) Caden discusses his role as the VP of Business Development which includes being responsible for overseeing technology for inbound and outbound leads. Today's guest is one of the original poster children of the Insurtech movement and has been applying technology to solve insurance problems since long before the phrase insurtech was coined. Back when the first insurtech conferences were getting started he was a highly sought-after speaker. If you listen today you'll soon understand why. Chris Cheatham founded RiskGenius in 2012 and in 2020 that business was absorbed by fellow insurtech and online exchange Bold Penguin Very soon afterwards the enlarged Bold Penguin became part of the American Family Insurance group. Chris's story is one of entrepreneurship and a path into insurtech maturity. Unlike many in the first wave and many of the speakers at those early conferences, neither RiskGenius nor Bold Penguin made any claim to be insurance disruptors intent on revolution and disintermediation. Instead these businesses were industry partners, looking to remove friction and pain points, largely for existing insurance entities. As the tech funding climate cools it is their model that is the one gaining traction and adoption from some of the most traditional elements in the insurance value chain. Today's discussion is really valuable because it mirrors the growing maturity of the insurtech scene and shines lots of light on where things are heading in the short, medium and long term. Chris has been on a remarkable journey – and from this encounter I feel he's just getting started. No matter where you are sitting in the insurance value chain I think the next half hour will be a very valuable investment of your time. Chris Cheatham, Product Evangelist at Bold Penguin, shares clever insights on his journey from startup to acquisition. He founded RiskGenius as a means to revolutionize insurance policy reviews through AI. The company made big waves attracting the attention of Bold Penguin who then acquired it. Exits like these are considered success stories by many business leaders.Cheatham attributes his success to his ability to communicate with customers. In his view, It is vital to first identify your prospects and customers. Then you can identify their problems and what they like about your product, next you can innovate it. Then close the loop by translating all this feedback and executing it during product updates. The concept seems simple enough, but a lot of companies struggle with the execution.Among the factors that have led to Cheatham's success are his constant passion for research and his continued enthusiasm for studying new ways to innovate. He is driven by an insatiable thirst to become more efficient, which involves improving the use of technology. In an area like software and artificial intelligence, this kind of mindset is a big advantage.Cheatham attributes this tenacious passion to his devotion to research. This helps him to identify areas in which he can improve his superpower. He thinks every founder should realize their superpower and tap into it. He recommends that every founder should also have the metaphorical “kryptonite” that a superpower brings. It's imperative to identify this “kryptonite” and set up guardrails for it. This can come in the form of technology, a process, or more importantly, team members who can offset it.Startup founders looking for ideas to drive success into the ideal exit strategy will love Cheatham's insights and his experience.Book - Linchpin by Seth GodenSoftware - OmnifocusLinkedIn - https://www.linkedin.com/in/chrischeatham/Website - https://www.boldpenguin.com/This episode is brought to you by Content Allies.Content Allies helps B2B tech companies launch revenue-generating podcasts. Ryan Hanley is the founder and president of Rogue Risk, a one-of-a-kind national digital commercial brokerage, pioneering the "Human-optimized" independent agency methodology. Ryan produces  The Ryan Hanley Show podcast, the largest independent agent-focused podcast in the world. Ryan is also the Amazon bestselling author of Content Warfare and has been an insurtech advisor and investor for more than 5 years. Highlights from the Show Ryan started in insurance as a producer at an agency almost 20 years ago Growing up, Ryan never had a clear vision of what he wanted from his career, and got into Insurance because his future-father-in-law offered him a job He realized early on that he was terrible at the traditional approach to sales, driving around, trying to talk to people for leads and business He realized digital was the key, so he shifted to using digital platforms to drive activity He left to join TrustedChoice.com to be their Chief Marketing Officer, and then do the same at Bold Penguin Due to a family emergency, he had to stop traveling, so he left Bold Penguin for a local business he lead for a short time before starting his own insurance agency, Rogue Risk Ryan has met thousands of people across the industry through his career, and saw this coalescence of attempts to disrupt the agency channel with enhancements to the value agents can provide, and that was the genesis of his business, Rogue Risk, which brings together both sides of the equation to support small businesses better Ryan found that many leaders can't deal with taking losses or having failures, while he sees them as a normal part of building something If you're unwilling to put something at risk, you will never capture what is really possible or meet the true needs out in the market Ryan says he's going to lose 50% of the time, but the wins will be much bigger, so it's worth it If you want innovation, then you have to be willing to take the lumps with it, like pricing that may move more than other players Carriers should think about how hard it is to work with them (whether for the insured or an agent), and the excuse is "because that's how it's done" Then you have new entrants like Coterie who you can close an account with in seven minutes on one call People often focus on nuances of the startups or their coverage that don't matter to the vast majority of risks, yet they hold these things up as valid reasons to dismiss newcomers who are doing things better/faster/more flexibly and missing the chance to learn from their example Ryan gives an example of The Hartford, who won't allow premium to be paid in the first year any way except in full and from a bank account; you can't use a credit card until year two; but most small businesses want to manage their expenses differently, want the points, want aggregated expense tracking, etc, so this doesn't fit their need; yet The Hartford says it's small business focused Then you have Coterie on the other side, who allows credit card payments from Day 1, so if you're quoting both carriers on a risk, and the price is the same, Coterie wins the account for the simple reason that they work the way that small business account prefers to work Increasingly, this is how small business is won, on the way we work more than the details and nuances on the margin Ryan gives advice to InsurTechs trying to sell into Insurance, and how much it is still so much about relationships (than Financial Services is), so knowing the right people can help shrink timelines This is because as an industry, we need to trust who we're working with and that they will be here for the long haul, like the carriers will be Ideas come and go, and that's ok, but they need to know that the people will stand up if something happens so they can trust that things will be ok in the end While he hopes we speed up, he hopes we don't change caring about the long term because that's what lets us stay able to be there for people in the worst moments, like major hurricanes Rogue is a digital agent, but also knows that many situations require a phone call, so pure digital paths will inherently mean some people can't find coverage with you; Ryan started the agency with a concept of No Customer Left Behind, which means he leans on digital, STP solutions as well as being able to pickup the phone and talk to an insured in a hybrid approach Ryan sees a future that will still include local agents because there is a local need for advisors, but it will be supported by new technology that can make the economics of a small agency better than they are today, making them more sustainable However, those local agents won't look like they did forty years ago, where you could open a shop and walk the streets to drum up business Digital agents can drop a pin in your area and scoop up business in a way that never existed before, so the model will be different for local shops Launching Rogue three days before COVID lock downs changed how they built things Rogue's model is to incubate producer's futures by letting them build their own business to eventually spin off This is different from being a producer at a large shop where you can be a star, but never ultimately own your book COVID forced them to pivot to in-bound rather than the outbound model he envisioned, but now they've been able to go back to the incubator idea he originally had So many people talk about wanting to grow, but are really ok with low single-digit growth; if you really want to grow, you have to be willing to make investments in your business This episode is brought to you by Ascend (useascend.com). And by the the book series, The Future of Insurance: From Disruption to Evolution by Bryan Falchuk (future-of-insurance.com). Welcome back to another edition of the Insurance Requirements podcast! I am your host Andrew Correll. I want to first thank everyone listening to Season 1 and making it a great success. The support from everyone along the way has been incredible. And the amount of knowledge and experience shared on the podcast through our first 10 episodes was amazing. That wouldn't have been possible without an all-star cast. Speaking of that cast, they kept pretty busy too. Risk Genius was acquired by Bold Penguin, Juniper Labs was acquired by Next Insurance. Carey Anne has been busy doing amazing work launching Loop Insurance. Xilo and Spot have both completed recent rounds of funding. The kindness, generosity, and general badassery among that group is off the charts. As we get ready to dive into Season 2, I wanted to give you a brief update on what's been going on since we last hung out in January. For starters, I started a new role as an Insurance Product Innovation Manager at Vouch Insurance which allows me to double down on creating the premier insurance buying experience for Technology Startups and Innovators. The past six months have been an incredible experience that's uncovered so much about the ins and outs of building insurance products. But even more so that successful startups are much more than just insurance. It's about the steps taken before a claim is filed that tell the real story. In short, Risk Management. Join me in Season 2 as we meet with some of the brightest minds in Technology, Cyber Security, culture building, team construction, sales, company formation and equity, to uncover the biggest risks standing in between you and ultimate success, as well as actionable advice on how to avoid them. In episode 1, Frankie Arvelo, of Arvelo PLLC, provides a masterclass in legal hurdles startups face getting off the ground and much more. You won't want to miss Frankie's advice for structuring term sheets and customer contracts. Andrew Daniels, Founder and Managing Director, InsurTech Ohio Andrew Daniels is the Founder and a Managing Director of InsurTech Ohio. Andrew's experience includes leading claims operations, launching new insurtech solutions with a major carrier innovation team, and advising early stage startups. Michael Fiedel, Managing Director, InsurTech OhioMichael Fiedel is a Managing Director of InsurTech Ohio and a co-founder of PolicyFly, a digital policy management system. Michael's expertise in the insurtech space includes leading product strategy and customer success, along with corporate initiatives across business development and marketing. Highlights from the Show InsurTech Ohio is trying to facilitate the community that has existed in Columbus and Ohio more broadly Andrew Daniels had been working in innovation at Allstate, talked to Ilya Bodner, founder of Bold Penguin, and was given access to the network of the InsurTech community in the state to try to build something sustainable to keep the movement going in the state Michael had been elsewhere in the US, and picked Columbus with his wife to settle down and raise their family, and found a very strong Insurance community in the state There seemed to be a growing sense of partnership in the state around helping raise the profile of Columbus and Ohio more broadly in the Insurance community in the US given how much is going on in the state There's a positive camaraderie across all of the geographic InsurTech communities that have been popping up around the US There are three or four reasons why communities exist "I want to be a part of a community" and talk about insurance with people, so sometimes you have to build it yourself if you want that There are some forward thinking carriers out there, and a lot are in Columbus and OH VCs hubbed in specific places, like Columbus What's missing in Ohio versus some other cities is more of an ecosystem of investment and startup coming in and out of the area, like in NYC or SF Things coming down the road 2021-2022 will be the year of embedded insurance and carriers spinning up with a focus on a very specific demographic Every carrier is searching for ways to be accessible across digital channels, and there is an arms race to try to be as accessible as possible; this has expanded to commercial lines, too, and is beyond the quote process Carriers will run through the standard innovation cycles, but more mature levels like at Progressive and AmFam have studios where they are looking at adjacent spaces they might be able to bring insurance solutions to. Commoditization is an interesting challenge that the industry is facing, especially as more things more digital as price becomes more front and center The hesitation from carriers isn't on innovation, it's that they want to build technology, but don't want to challenge their actuarial model The first wave of InsurTechs that have exited could help clarify what it takes to succeed We talked about Amazon since Insurance is about protecting people and things, and Amazon is the mother of all providers of things, so they will be front and center in much of the conversation around embedded insurance and other, similar ways the industry will change Advice for those looking at moving into Insurance or moving forward with a new idea Get involved in your community, and if you don't have one in your area, reach out to the InsurTech Ohio team for help and guidance so you can build one Talk to experts to learn and grow Don't hoard your idea as if you're the only one thinking of it as those who win is based on speed and passion, so anything that can help make it happen is worth it If you are solo, find others to work with you with complementary skills – there are no successful InsurTech startups that were founded by one person alone Don't be insular, engage This episode is brought to you by Medallia (Medallia.com), and the book series, "The Future of Insurance: From Disruption to Evolution" by Bryan Falchuk (future-of-insurance.com). Notes from the episode Consolidation of distribution players across the board Insurance exchange platforms (Bold Penguin, Insureon, etc) Everyone rushed to integrate with them, especially on small commercial In the last 12-18 months, we've seen a rush of acquiring them (Aon buys CoverWallet, AmFam buys Bold Penguin) Seeing some of the distribution players buying innovation companies to ostensibly build a new platform to distribute their products differently This all leads us to question how we've sold, prospected, etc, and what will change here. How will AI going to play into the lead gen space, and especially moving beyond personal lines Blockchain as a way to distribute data, but retain control Initial use cases seem to be focused on the regulatory area as a way to get the data into the places that require it, but allow carriers to retain  control of the data Increased awareness of and focus on security means the additional control you can retain is really attractive Blockchain can become a natural extension of internal data and analytics work that's gone on because it's a way to share data, so it can bolster what your analytics can do When will we move from building solutions to putting them together (by aggregating all the best-of-breed point solutions available)? The Cloud enables democratizing data so you can do more with it in more places, and to do so relatively inexpensively Using outcomes to anchor technology investments Focus on business agility and flexibility more so than just speed when looking at Agile Focusing on outcomes rather than replacing a system Jane's advice to CIOs is to make the Technology organization in a company part of the business fabric, being curious and interested This episode is brought to you by Medallia (Medallia.com), and the book series, "The Future of Insurance: From Disruption to Evolution" by Bryan Falchuk (future-of-insurance.com). In 2020, Bold Penguin was responsible for over 1 million quote starts. Chris sits at the intersection of product and marketing, where he provides feedback and messaging between insurance professionals and Bold Penguin product development. In January 2021, Chris launched the Bold Penguin Agent Council to provide direct feedback between technical leadership and agents utilizing the Bold Penguin Terminal to quote and bind. Prior to Bold Penguin, Chris was the Co-Founder and CEO of RiskGenius, where he created insurance policy review software that has processed over a million insurance clauses with the aid of artificial intelligence. Bold Penguin acquired RiskGenius in October 2020. Before launching his technology business, Chris was an insurance attorney in Washington, D.C. for five years. Chris holds a bachelor's degree in political science from the University of Kansas and a juris doctorate from the University of Texas at Austin.  Highlights from the Show Chris was struck by the need to understand what was and wasn't covered and what the language in a policy meant from his work as an attorney He sought to bring out what the most common, lowest denominator was across competing policies That was the intention of RiskGenius, and he raised $13 million and hired 30 people along the way to understand insurance coverage by using computers They needed to figure out what the problem was that they needed to solve They tried to do it all, but Chris would have started smaller and put on blinders if he was doing it again because of all the ideas coming at you Budget for his customer vanished for a year, and you can't survive that wait as a startup QBE came to him, having to understand all the wordings and coverage they had through the various acquisitions they had made to rationalize their policy forms Then the shifting focus on small business started to emerge, with more and more online quoting and binding activity That focus is why Bold Penguin has been so successful, and adding RiskGenius to their platform made sense in helping to identify the right coverage or help people select the right coverage One major hold back for the industry is carrier APIs, as many are too complex, limiting or hard to connect with It all comes back to the pipes (connecting different players in the ecosystem) This episode is brought to you by Medallia (Medallia.com), and the book series, The Future of Insurance: From Disruption to Evolution, by Bryan Falchuk (future-of-insurance.com). Katelyn focuses on early stage B2B enterprise solutions in the New York, Boston, and Philadelphia markets. She is an active advocate in the entrepreneurial community, having served as a mentor at TechStars, Harvard Business School, MIT, and MassChallenge. Katelyn is currently serving as Executive Director of the Horn Program VC Council at the University of Delaware. An engineer by training, Katelyn earned a degree in Mechanical Engineering from the University of Delaware and started her career as a medical device engineer before attending Harvard Business School.  Highlights from the Show AmFam Ventures started in 2012/2013 as a more traditional CVC with a $50m, balance sheet-based fund, with one of their investments being Ring, who was a unicorn It has evolved since then with their second fund changing from being committed balance sheet funding to a committed pool of capital, with an investment being Bold Penguin, which AmFam recently acquired Now their third fund includes LPs beyond AmFam with $230m in total funding, which started in 2019 They had seen how they can help AmFam by bringing in new ideas and companies to work with, and benefited from AmFam's help on assessing and vetting potential investments, and saw value in expanding that to more carriers and lines of business through additional LPs in fund 3 AmFam made decisions early on to give the Ventures team freedom to do what it needs to do regardless of what AmFam itself would find relevant, for example not having to have a contract with part of AmFam to get an investment Embedded Insurance is a focus for the industry this year, an AFV is putting a lot of focus on Claims They invest in things that are both core and adjacent to insurance Core - brokers, distribution systems Adjacent - insurance can use, but it doesn't have to be only in insurance An adjacent example is Tire Agent, who sells tires online Tires are responsible for a meaningful percent of car accidents, so there's an insurance tie in her But there's also an opportunity to embed insurance into the sale process A focus right now is embedded insurance, which AFV was working on in 2015/2016, and what lead to the creation of Clearcover out of AFV As more InsurTech carriers IPOed, they're being valued on growth multiple, which is very atypical for insurance Now there's a focus on bottomline profitability, so if we can't control the loss ratio, how can we get leaner on the expense side? You always see them in their colonies. They might look slow on the surface, but under the water, they're incredibly fast. And, that's everything that our technology is built around... being fast, efficient, to the point.” - Marc DeLeonibus “I think insurance is absolute. In my opinion, the best business to be in… particularly commercial insurance, because there's so much ability for agents. I can leverage technology now to really get an edge and grow quickly.” - Marc DeLeonibus “Understanding what I think we all understood from early on, is we need to look at what the seats are on the bus, and figure out how to put those people in those right places. Don't sacrifice ever, on people. Make sure every single person is truly an A player that brings a complementary skill set to the team.” - Marc DeLeonibus Resources Mentioned: Marc DeLeonibus LinkedIn Bold Penguin Fusco & Orsini Insurance Services Mike Fusco LinkedIn  Ray Ramirez LinkedIn

Nationwide is expanding its investment fund that targets high-growth startups building products, services, and technology that can benefit Nationwide customers. Nationwide’s original $100 million fund drew interest from startups looking to partner with Nationwide not only for capital but access to customers, expertise, and its Fortune 100 brand recognition. Nationwide is looking to invest in companies innovating in digital infrastructure, home solutions, living in retirement, small and medium-sized businesses, telematics and fleet management, and cybersecurity and risk. So far, Nationwide’s venture capital team has invested in 25 companies and has helped facilitate 31 partnerships between startups and Nationwide business units. What does this mean? Columbus has already established itself as an insurtech startup hub with recent exits like Root Insurance and Bold Penguin. However, with an extra $250 million in dry powder, Nationwide Ventures has the capital to help boost Columbus fintech and cybersecurity companies potentially adding another industry or two to the city’s startup brand story. --- Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/614startups/support
