On January 15, 2009, US Airways Flight 1549, piloted by Captain Chesley "Sully" Sullenberger and First Officer Jeffrey Skiles, struck a flock of geese shortly after takeoff from LaGuardia Airport, causing both engines to fail. Facing a critical emergency, Captain Sully made the decision to execute a water landing on the Hudson River. All 155 passengers and crew survived the unprecedented ditching, thanks to the crew's expertise and the swift response of rescue teams. Check out Uncommon Goods! How do you say thank you to the man who saved your life? On this day 14 years ago, Flight 1549 crash-landed in the Hudson River. Captain Sully was in the pilot's seat, and Ric Elias was in Seat 1D.In this special episode, Ric and Captain Sully reflect on their experiences of the “Hudson Miracle” from both sides, and how it's changed both of their lives forever.More Info:As a former U.S. Air Force fighter pilot and an airline pilot for 30 years, Capt. Sullenberger has always been passionate about safety, leadership, risk management, and crisis management. Given a greater voice after his historic, successful Hudson River landing in 2009, he has felt a deep obligation to use his voice for good. He most recently directed his efforts towards safety in global air travel, serving as the U.S. Ambassador and representative to the International Civil Aviation Organization, a United Nations Specialized Agency. But for many years, Capt. Sullenberger has been vocal about safety not just in the aviation and medical fields, but across all industries. He has testified before congressional committees many times and lent his expertise to shaping safety legislation. And he speaks in defense of democracy and American values. In 2009, with more than 20,000 hours of flight time, Capt. Sullenberger – along with his First Officer Jeff Skiles - safely guided US Airways Flight 1549 to an emergency landing in the Hudson River, in what has become known as the “Miracle on the Hudson.” In terms of total combined years of flying since they had become pilots, Capt. Sullenberger and First Officer Skiles had 75 years' experience at that time. And in terms of total years of just airline flying experience, they had a combined 50 years, so they were an extraordinarily experienced crew. Hosted on Acast. Every hero STARTS as a CHILD, and every Child can CHOOSE to become a Hero... Just like THIS one!It was January 23, 1951 when a little boy named Chesley was born in Denison, Texas. His father, Dr. Sullenberger was a dentist and his mother was an elementary school teacher. Even at a very young age, Chesley was interested in flying as he watched military airplanes from the nearby Air Force base fly over his house. He became an honor student in school, but in his spare time, he liked building model airplanes and model aircraft carriers. All through school he participated in academic competitions, while continuing his interest in flying. He got his pilot's license while he was still in high school. After college, he joined the United States Air Force where he became a fighter pilot. By this time, Chesley Sullenberger became known by his nickname, “Sully.” In 1980, Captain Sully became an airline pilot. But it wasn't until January 15, 2009 that Captain Sully's name was world famous. It was on that day when he was piloting U.S. Airways Flight 1549, very shortly after take-off from New York's LaGuardia Airport, that both engines quit from hitting a flock of birds. One engine was on fire, and there was no place to land. The airplane was not high enough yet to turn around and go back to the airport. There was only one choice— crash—but where? Nothing but buildings and narrow streets as far as he could see. “We're gonna be in the Hudson,” Captain Sully told air traffic controllers on the radio in a calm voice. And indeed he did land that big Airbus 320 in the Hudson river—a VERY difficult thing to do. One slight miscalculation and the airplane would have disintegrated. But, on that day, in that moment, all of Chesley Sullenberger's training, all of his precision, and all of his ability to think quickly came into play. On that day, and in that moment, Captain Sully saved the lives of all 155 passengers on board. On that day, and in that moment, Chesley Sullenberger became a HERO! Support this podcast
The last big crash where the year ended down was 2008, with the market ending down 38%. Before 2008, 2000–2002 were three years where the market was down in the double-digits. If you retire at age 62 like the average person, you're expected to live another 30 years! That is 30 years where you will likely experience a market crash. So what should you do when you experience a market crash during retirement? Do you jump out of the market and make your portfolio conservative until the coast is clear? Or do you wait out the storm? I answer this listener's question in this episode of Retirement Made Easy. You will want to hear this episode if you are interested in... [0:41] Answering Keith's question: [2:50] Find out how to get a free Yeti Tumbler! [4:42] Step #1: Create and reference your retirement plan [8:33] Step #2: Use the bucket strategy for retirement planning [12:10] Step #3: Stress-test your retirement plan [14:26] The biggest mistake that people make in a downturn Step #1: Create and reference your retirement plan If your goal is to retire at age 62 or 65, we must assume that you'll live 30+ years. You will experience a setback in the market. It's like taking a road trip from New York to LA. If you're traveling that far, the odds of hitting road construction are pretty high. So you must plan ahead and ask yourself, “What will I do if…?” Tom Hanks plays Captain Sully in the movie, “Sully.” He was flying a plane when two birds hit the engines. Both engines went out. The first thing he did was ask the co-pilot, “Give me the QR.” It's a manual that they reference in case of emergencies. Together, they determined they had to land the aircraft in the Hudson River. All 155 passengers survived because they had a plan in case of emergencies. That's why we make a retirement plan for our clients. If the market crashes, you have a plan in place that will direct your steps through the crisis. How we set up someone‘s portfolio is based on the assumption that there will be a large market downturn at any time. Step #2: Use the bucket strategy for retirement planning If you've listened to previous episodes, you know I'm an advocate for the bucket strategy. To give you a quick recap, your portfolio should consist of three different buckets: Emergency fund: This should have 6–24 months of living expenses inside of it. This is short-term money that can't be risked in the stock market. This will help bail you out when you're hit with an unexpected expense. A tax-efficient retirement income: Bucket #2 provides the most tax-efficient income from your portfolio. This can include Roth IRAs, 401ks, or a brokerage account depending on the mix that makes sense for you. This is what you live on month-to-month. Your long-term growth-oriented bucket: We know the cost of living will continue to rise. Prices on groceries, gas, etc. rose significantly in the first half of 2021. It's rumored that the SSA will give their largest cost-of-living adjustment raises, effective 1/1/2022. This bucket is geared toward growth that will help you keep up with the cost of living. Each bucket has a different job. During a market crash, you could reduce some of the income in bucket #2 temporarily. You can do Roth conversions while the market is down. Step #3: Stress-test your retirement plan You should stress-test your retirement plan to determine how a 30% or 40% drop in the market would impact your portfolio. Would your plan crumble? If you plan for these scenarios ahead of time, you are prepared for a market crash. The only thing you don't know is how long it will last. But we can look at historical crashes to gauge how long we need to plan for. You can't retire thinking you'll never experience a market downturn—or that you can keep doing the same thing. A lot of people retired in 1999. Let's say they had $1 million invested in the S&P 500 and were taking out $50,000 a year. The market was down the following three years. Then they experienced a large crash in 2008. This person would've run out of money by 2016 with 14+ years of retirement left. You can't let this happen to you. What is the biggest mistake that people make in a downturn? What is the worst thing you can do? Listen to the whole episode to learn THE best ways to handle a market downturn. Have you ever heard about Captain Sully and The Miracle on the Hudson? When the plane he was piloting hit geese and stopped the thrusters of both engines, Captain Sully maintained "positive optimism" and focused on the one thing that was most important at the time — landing the plane safely. Let's look at how we can all do the same. Here are 8 steps that will help you. #6 is my favorite. Check it out and see if you can figure out why. Why do some executives and plant managers struggle to become effective leaders? What does effective leadership mean? How can visuality help leaders be more effective? In this show, Gwendolyn Galsworth (your host and visual workplace expert) scans the fourth door in her 10-Doorway Model: the making of an executive leader through metrics, problem-solving and hoshin (policy-goal deployment). To Dr. Galsworth the task of executive leaders is to: decide and drive. She does not embrace the popular but mistaken notion that effective leaders can only be born. Instead, she offers new leaders (and harried managers) a set of highly visual tools that—when learned, applied, and mastered—confers the holy grail of leadership: the ability to say YES to the few and WAIT to the many, with confidence and knowing. Along the way, she anchors your understanding in vivid examples--for instance, Captain Sully’s emergency landing in the Hudson on that cold grey January day in 2009. Let the workplace speak.

This is a powerful episode where Dave details the final moments of the flight before impact. How the flight changed his sales approach and mindset. The “distinct advantage” he took away from the event and much more. He's written two books. Moments Matter and his newest book, God Gives You The Lesson When You Are Ready. Thursday October 15, 2020 Captain Sully Urges Further Updates to Boeing’s 737 MAX
Into the BookLearn to LeadRead or WatchImagine taking responsibility for 155 people in a life-or-death crisis. In 2009, Captain "Sully" Sullenberger piloted flight 1549 to safety after they hit a flock of geese, and the engines lost power. His landing strip? The Hudson River. Captain Sully was calm and decisive in that dangerous moment, though he later called it "the worst sickening, pit-of-your-stomach, falling-through-the-floor feeling" of his life. And he put those under his charge ahead of himself, waiting until every soul deboarded the plane before he exited. That's leadership! This week we'll find Paul's message of leadership to a pair of younger evangelists — Titus, teaching on the island of Crete, and Timothy, working with the church in Ephesus. These letters show us how to stand courageously under seemingly impossible odds.Leadership ProtectsOn Monday (Titus 1), Paul directs Titus to appoint elders to protect the church. These men must be "above reproach" (Titus 1:7) and "hold firm to the trustworthy word" (Titus 1:9). They have to watch for "liars, evil beasts, (and) lazy gluttons" as a Cretan poet called them (Titus 1:12).What differences do you notice this week between empty teaching and healthy teaching?Leadership ModelsOn Tuesday (Titus 2), Paul encourages Titus to teach sound doctrine to those of every age (Titus 2:1-6). His life should give them a "model of good works" (Titus 2:7). God's grace is for everyone, but it doesn't loosen God's standard for us; instead, it trains us "to renounce ... worldly passions" and live with self-control (Titus 2:11-12). And he needs to teach these truths "with all authority" (Titus 2:15). Paul gives commands for different groups (Titus 2: 2-10). Which group fits you, and how can you apply the instruction?Leadership SubmitsSome truths bear repeating, so Wednesday's reading (Titus 3) says to remind people to submit to authorities and do good works (Titus 3:1). But our righteous works don't save us. Our gracious God justifies us "by the washing of regeneration and renewal of the Holy Spirit, whom he poured out on us richly through Jesus Christ" (Titus 3:4-7). So, instead of battling with each other, avoid foolish controversies and fights (Titus 3:9)!Who must we "show perfect courtesy" toward (Titus 3:2)?Leadership isn't AshamedOn Thursday, we move onto Paul's first letter to Timothy. In chapter 1, we learn more about those who have "swerved" from the truth (1 Tim. 1:6), having "shipwrecked" their faith (1 Tim. 1:19). But rather than fear, Timothy must stand against them with power, love, and discipline (1 Tim. 1:5). Nobody's perfect — including Paul (1 Tim. 1:13-15) — but don't be ashamed when you follow the pattern of sound words, guarding the treasure. What's the "aim" of our teaching (1 Tim. 1:5)?Leadership PraysFinally, on Friday (1 Tim. 2), Paul equips Timothy with the most indispensable leadership tool of all: prayer! We need to pray for all people, including authorities, through our mediator, Jesus Christ (1 Tim. 2:1-5). He calls on men to pray rather than fight (1 Tim. 2:8), and women to live in faith, love, holiness, and self-control (1 Tim. 2:15). All these lessons of leadership and faith help us serve and bring others to God, "who desires all people to be saved and to come to the knowledge of the truth" (1 Tim. 2:4).Support the Show

It's been just over 10 years since Captain "Sully" completed an emergency water landing of a commercial jet in the Hudson river. In honor of this, Darren invited a member of his flight club, Roger Harris, a retired commercial jet pilot, onto the show. Roger gave us his opinion on whether or not the technology is there, to let planes fly by computer, without a pilot. Listen in to learn more! Season 1 Episode 18.
Along the way, she shares anecdotes that anchor her meaning—for example: Captain Sully’s emergency landing in the Hudson on that cold grey day in January 2009. Let the workplace speak.

Despite the hazards to himself, Sanderson thought only of helping others and emerged from the wreckage with a mission: to encourage others to do the right thing. That experience profoundly changed his life and today he travels the globe sharing his inspirational and motivational leadership messages to help people make a difference in how they do business and live their lives.
