What American chains have been successful in Korea, and which haven't? How do they differ? Have any Korean chains been successful in America? Did Red Mango and Pinkberry start in America, or Korea? What global drink brand did Korea take over? What Korean chain did Daniel's co-worker take great offense to? What key signature item do Korean 7-11's not have? What chain in Korea has a Gone With The Wind flavor? What American thing are Korean convenience stores most similar to? What Canadian franchise is coming to Korea? What food trends are already dying down?Does Psy have his own burger, and who is Papa Jones? If you're interested in any of these questions, tune in to hear Daniel and Jun discuss all this and more! This week Jun and Daniel wax nostalgic and take a walk down memory lane as they recount various TV shows from their respective childhoods in the 80s, 90s, and 2000s. From children's cartoons to daytime soaps, Daniel discovers that Korean and American youth had quite a great deal of overlap. What is AFKN, and how did it enable Korean youth to get access to even more American TV shows than some American kids? What was the Sunday morning ritual for kids in Korea growing up in the 80s and 90s? What were the popular Korean cartoons from that time? What K-pop group was the origin of modern day idol culture and fandom? What US shows found outsized success in Korea? What TV shows and other forms of entertainment in Korea were inspired by shows in the US, and vice versa? And for the 90s kid who grew up in America, we know you'll enjoy the nostalgia that comes from hearing the letters T.G.I.F.If you're interested in any of these questions, tune in to hear Daniel and Jun discuss all this and more! In this episode, Daniel and Jun show great restraint by not (completely!) going down tangents related to Korea-Germany connections, K-pop, K-dramas, and famous memes. Additionally, hear Daniel go on a rant about the pitfalls of having a very common name, and learn who was Jun's favorite Friends character. And yes, don't worry, Daniel is already quite embarrassed by his glaring omission of The Simpsons, amongst many other inaccuracies, and apologizes in advance to those who listen all the way through to the bitter end.Thank you Matthew Perry for all the memories and laughs; you were there for us, and connected so many people across the globe. As a reminder, we record one episode a week in-person from Seoul, South Korea. The United States Studies Centre hosted a special US midterms event featuring The New York Times' Jane Coaston, ABC's Political commentator Annabel Crabb, and USSC's CEO Dr Michael Green. The presumption of a red wave in the US November midterms elections has been tempered by setbacks on the Republican agenda and significant legislative victories for Democrats. But the winner of the US House and Senate elections impacts far more than US domestic politics. The US posture toward China, defence funding, trade agreements and more all hinge on the makeup of Congress. For Australia, the stakes have never been higher in a US midterms election. What US issues are the biggest concern for US and Australian voters? What is the state of play going into the midterms? What do the midterms tell us about what to expect in the 2024 US presidential election? To explore these topics, USSC commissioned polling on public opinion in the United States and Australia. This special event provided an opportunity to discuss the key findings from US Midterms 2022 with Jane Coaston, Annabel Crabb and Michael Green.

Hello, this is the World News Podcast from Just Talking English, listen to the most important news, while learning and training English. I'm Edward Jr and for today, these are our main stories. LOCKDOWN - Concern over crowded UK beaches, parks and parties. It's been awhile since British people had a chance to go to the beach, the weather is not favorable most of the year, but yesterday, a big surprise, the hotest day in this year, has made people think that maybe, staying at home was no longer reasoble or significant. BBC News asked a man about what happened on the south coast of England, and he said: "We just have to recognise yesterday was the hottest day of the year, incredibly hot, a lot of people had the same idea, they all went to the beach, and yes of course those scenes are a matter for concern. He means about social distancing. SPACE: Virgin Galactic, the first space tourism company, completed a successful test flight yesterday, another important step towards becoming commercial. According to the company's plans, still in 2020 we will see the first flight with space tourists. Although the ticket is about 250 thousand dollars, it is expected to drop significantly in the coming years. GEORGE FLOYD: It's been one month since George Floyd, the black man in the US city in Minneapolis was killed by a white police officer, and the protests against racism and police violence continue across the country, some asking for diversity in America government. In Minnesota the state where Mr. George Floyd lived and died, recent events have inspired a number of black woman in a record number to be candidate for the first time, let's listen to two of these candidates interviewed by BBC News. “The moment I decided to run was when George floyd call up for his mum, I've seen my 24 year old black son under that man's knee, and that moment I knew I had to do something. My name is Zina Fizer, I am running for a office Minnesota senate”. “..and the black woman in America I realised that my voice needed to be heard and I've asked to consider running for a state then, and I initially thought well that's pretty far-fetched, but when I realised that as George was calling for his mother that I had the responsibility to answer that call”. What US police officers think of protests? Well according to today's Wall Street Journal, some think change needs to come from the top, others say they are doing a tough job (a hard job) and under attack. And that was all for us for now, you can read the transcript of this podcast on the Just Talking English website. I'm Edward Jr, until next time, goodbye.

I got the voice mail a couple of days ago. It was a strange, computerized voice telling me I was in trouble for not paying taxes and it was my last shot to get things resolved without going to court (or being arrested). I knew it was a scam, but I was curious... I called back and here is what happened. I wanted to know more about how this business operates, so I kept calling different call centers until I found somebody willing to give me the inside scoop. This episode contains a recording of that conversation. It explains the business behind the "IRS Phone Scam" and what you can learn from it to apply to your business. In This Episode: How electronic payments people make to the call center get converted to cash Who owns the call center? The "Dealer" and how he works Does the "IRS Scam" have a good conversion rate? How call centers involved in this business get leads What the inside of a call center looks like The reason why some people in the call center are working there How much money can you make working in an illegal call center? (HINT: Not much.) What call center workers do when they run out of phone numbers... "Scam Training" -- what it looks like Where fake names call center workers come from What US politicians and illegal call centers have in common The easiest way to get people to take action (but not necessarily the best way) Links To Things I Talk About: Clash Royale Phone Scams Continue to be a Serious Threat If you believe you've been a victim of an IRS Impersonation Scam, report the call here. PD87 Divers Alert Network:  2008 Technical Diving Conference. The two-day conference, planned for Jan. 18-19, 2008, in Durham, N.C., will feature four half-day workshops. Discussions will include the operational and medical aspects of technical diving. The forum will also address ways to improve effectiveness and safety.Workshops OverviewPHYSIOLOGY WORKSHOP PLANRespirationNormal respiration and gas exchange at sea level with emphasis on oxygen uptake, CO2 elimination, and ventilatory control. Dependency of CO2 elimination on ventilation. CO2 retention and individual susceptibility. Effects of tidal volume and dead space on alveolar ventilation. Hypo- and hyperventilation. Ventilatory capacity, physical fitness, and respiratory muscle fatigue. Effects of immersion and gas density. Airway collapse and effort independent expiratory flow. Equipment dead space, static lung load, breathing resistance, and work of breathing. Effect of HPNS on respiration. Case reports.CNS Oxygen ToxicityRelevant mechanisms of CNS toxicity: free radicals, ventilation, CO2 retention, cerebral blood flow. Risk factors and individual susceptibility. Donald’s WWII studies. Estimating CNS toxicity risk in relation to O2 exposure, review of O2 exposure guidelines, and the O2 clock. O2-CO2 interactions and “Shallow Water Black-Out.? Mixed-gas O2 exposure limits. Recovery from CNS toxicity risk during underwater air breaks. Case reports.Narcosis and HPNSSigns and symptoms of nitrogen narcosis; individual susceptibility, accommodation and adaptation to narcosis; effects on narcosis of rate of compression, oxygen and carbon dioxide; onset depths of narcosis; narcotic potencies of N2, He, Ne, Ar, Xe, O2and CO2; oxygen narcosis; recommended depth limits for air diving; mechanism of narcosis; pressure reversal; utility of EAD/END (equivalent air depth/equivalent nitrogen depth). Signs and symptoms of HPNS; individual susceptibility; depth of occurrence; effect on HPNS of compression rate and time at depth; effect of trimix; effect of hydreliox; mechanisms of HPNS; options for reducing HPNS effects given obligatory fast descent rates.Thermal Mechanisms of heat transfer (radiation, conduction, evaporation, and convection) with application to divers. Physiological temperature control and consequences of heat transfer (work; shivering; regional vasoconstriction; stages of hyperthermia and hypothermia; freezing and non-freezing injury). Respiratory heat transfer (inert gas and density effects). Rewarming and thermal afterdrop (“warm and dead?). Drysuit insulation properties of Ar, He, CO2, air and O2 (is this safe?). Insulation properties of wet undergarments. Tools for thermal modeling. Hotwater suits for shallow in-water decompression stops vs. insulation for dry decompression. (Thermal effects on decompression will be covered in the Decompression Workshop.) Current and new active and passive technologies (power sources, hydrogen thermal batteries, hydrogen catalytic heating, regional rewarming, aerogel garments). DECOMPRESSION WORKSHOP PLAN DCI Pathophysiology DCI signs, symptoms and pathophysiology. Paradoxical thromboembolism and cryptogenic stroke. AGE: pulmonary barotrauma, ASD, PFO, and transpulmonary passage, Type III DCS. PFO detection and diver evaluation. Transpulmonary passage and bubble size. Evidence associating DCS with PFO. Skin bends and PFO. Exercise and pulmonary shunt. PFO correction. Case reports. DCS Risk Factors VGE as a measure of decompression stress. Environment: temperature, immersion, exercise. Influence of dive phase (pre-, bottom, deco, post-). Individual: obesity, gender, age, aerobic fitness, individual susceptibility. Adaptation, hydration, alcohol, previous DCS, injury. Deep Stops History and theory of deep stops. Empirical methods and rules. Supporting evidence and experimental data. Validation of methodology. In-Water Recompression Review of IWR experience. Appropriate signs and symptoms for IWR. Equipment and procedures to minimize IWR risk in event of decompression emergency with no access to recompression chamber. Training requirements. Environmental conditions. Depth measurement and control. Diver monitoring and tending. Surface support. Emergency procedures. Outcome reporting. DCS Risk Assessment DCS probability and severity in air and nitrox diving. DCS severity and acceptable DCS risk. Technical diving database, risk analysis and dive condition effects. Examples of tech dive profiles and outcome data. Diver Health Status Form (DHSF). Uploading dive profile and DHSF data to DAN Website. Are technical divers self-selected? REBREATHER WORKSHOP PLAN US Navy and UK/EU Perspectives on Rebreather Test Methods and Standards Rebreather divers must overcome the work of breathing due to breathing resistance, static lung load, and elastance. Inspired CO2 amplifies these effects by increasing ventilation. CO2 sensors and scrubber gauges would decrease this risk. CO2 canister duration is tested as a function of temperature, workload, and depth. O2 control accuracy is assessed. Testing should be performed on breathing machines and by divers. What US and EU labs are qualified to test rebreathers? What is the role of failure mode effect and criticality analysis (FMECA) in rebreather design? New U.S. Navy performance standards are based on diver tolerance. U.S. Navy and EU rebreather test standards should not differ, but do.
