On this episode of the Salience Podcast, we turn our attention to the relationship between human factors, systems, and analysis of safety incidents and accidents. As you might imagine, a company with a name like Frontline Mind is intimately involved with frontline action. The agencies and people we specialize in work in fast-paced, complex, and at times high-risk environments. Inevitably, there are near misses, incidents and accidents. How we best learn from these is not straightforward. In fact, when we work with agencies for the first time, we find that most after-action reviews or operational or cold debriefs have made matters worse. Partly, this is because there is an unrealistic focus on events that emerge and are only visible in hindsight. This is partly because there is a strong focus on errors and what went wrong. We can see and hear this bias in a deficit-based language where there is a focus on what went wrong. Now, I'm not a fan of an exclusive focus on what went well either. The danger of overdone positivity or staying in happy, clappy land is also unhelpful and is just as much of a concern as an obsession with what went wrong. So it's this use of language and the way we can direct attention that we are going to focus on today. And to help us unpack, how we can learn from near misses, incidents and accidents without falling into a judgmental binary of good and bad. we are joined by Dr. Steven Shorrock from Eurocontrol, where he works to support aviation throughout Europe with human factors, applied psychology and systems thinking and practice. Steven is a chartered psychologist and human factor specialist. He is editor in-chief of Hindsight Magazine and adjunct associate professor at the University of the Sunshine Coast Center for Human Factors and Sociotechnical Systems. For more information about The Salience Podcast and Frontline Mind please visit our website at https://www.frontlinemind.com/the-salience-podcast/ You can also sign up for our newsletter here https://frontlinemind.us17.list-manage.com/subscribe?u=ff181d12c77d7cea5f19a2c48&id=fd7357f614

Welcome back to The Vertical Space and a conversation with Andrew Hately - a senior researcher in the Drone unit at the EUROCONTROL Innovation Hub in France - about U-Space, UTM, and ATM. Andrew emphasizes the necessity of radical steps to integrate the airspace for UAS traffic management, suggesting that without such integration, UAS operations may not be economically viable. He particularly focuses on U-Space, discussing its origins, current status, requirements, and the challenges in its implementation. Andrew advocates for a proactive approach in designing the U-Space system from the outset, rather than adopting a slow iterative process, to ensure its effectiveness and eventual success. He also addresses the importance of drone detection, categorizing potential threats as careless, clueless, or criminal, and discusses the challenges in detecting noncooperative aircraft. Moreover, Andrew delves into the various technologies used for drone detection, including radar, acoustic, optical, and radio-based systems, highlighting the need for both tactical and strategic deconfliction to ensure safety in airspace shared by manned and unmanned aircraft. He acknowledges the current lack of confidence in surveillance systems for strategic maneuvering and emphasizes the necessity of knowing the precise locations of aircraft for effective tactical maneuvers. Additionally, Andrew discusses the role of commercial service providers in UAS traffic management, recognizing the challenges they face in a nascent market with limited flying activity but expressing optimism for the future of UAS operations. Overall, Andrew's insights reflect a well-informed and balanced perspective on the evolving landscape of UAS and UTM.

IAG is one of the world's largest airline groups – flying to more than 250 destinations and carrying around 95 million passengers in 2022 – and the parent company of airlines such as Aer Lingus, British Airways, Iberia, LEVEL and Vueling. IAG is also pursuing an acquisition of Air Europa, in order to further develop the Madrid hub, currently the fifth busiest airport in Europe, but with the potential to grow.
Talking to Milena Bowman and Tamara Pejovic Driving diversity, equity & inclusion forward in aviation In this of our #RaisingTheAviationBar podcast we discuss with EUROCONTROL Diversity Ambassadors Milena Bowman and Tamara Pejovic how aviation can drive forward diversity, equity and inclusion (DEI) to ensure it attracts the best talent. Episode Notes Europe is experiencing a major air traffic controller shortage. It's not only delaying flights, it's hurting the continent's travel recovery, reports Edward Russell, editor of Skift publication Airline Weekly. European airspace manager Eurocontrol found flight delays have increased 6% from last year, attributing those disruptions in part to air traffic controller staffing shortages. Russell writes the staffing shortage appears the worst in France and Germany, the two countries at the heart of Europe's air traffic control system. One industry executive said European air traffic controllers, often run by individual countries, are at least 700 controllers short of target staffing levels. Meanwhile, Lufthansa Group CEO Carsten Spohr said in July that air traffic control and other industry constraints would limit growth through at least 2024. Next, global investment in the travel industry has dropped from pre-pandemic levels. How much? Roughly $100 billion, writes Global Tourism Reporter Dawit Habtemariam. Habtemariam reports that $856 billion was invested in the industry last year. While that's an 11% jump from 2021, it's substantially below 2019's figure. Habtemariam notes worldwide investment in travel and tourism isn't expected to return to pre-Covid levels until 2025. The three countries with the highest levels of investment in travel and tourism last year were the U.S., China and Saudi Arabia. Finally, the U.S. lifestyle and boutique hotel pipeline is projected to grow substantially in the near future, but those forecasts may be overly optimistic, reports Senior Hospitality Editor Sean O'Neill. Analysis by hotel consulting firm The Highland Group said developers and hotel groups are planning to open nearly 60,000 branded lifestyle, soft-branded and boutique hotels by the end of 2027. That figure would represent a 29% annual increase. However, Kim Bardoul, partner at The Highland Group, said those projections are likely too optimistic. Still, O'Neill writes that developers are interested in lifestyle and boutique hotels because of their recent positive financial performance, on par with the traditional, large hotel properties. And there's growing demand from guests.

More air-traffic control misery? So say some reports today. Staff at Eurocontrol – the omniscient organisation at the heart of Europe's skies – are threatening to strike. Historically the trade union involved, the Union Syndicale Bruxelles , has been about as unmilitant as it is possible to be. My interpretation is that it's more of a cry for help by overstretched staff in a difficult summer, and I believe some kind of settlement will be reached – although that could conceivably include capping the number of flights. But it's against a background of air-traffic control stress that will cause problems through the summer. This podcast is free, as is my weekly newsletter. Sign up now to receive every Friday. Jarlath meets Eamonn Brennan, the Director General of EUROCONTROL - the intergovernmental European organisation that manages the European Air Traffic Network. Normally Eamonn would handle over 11 million flights during each calendar year but when he meets Jarlath, the world is upside down. Together they first examine the state of aviation during the pandemic, winning the public's trust back and finally his own journey into aviation and management style. Like so many other guests in the Flying Irishman series, aviation was not his first choice occupation. In this week's show, Colin talks to Steven Shorrock, editor of the Hindsight Magazine and the senior specialist of safety and human factors for Eurocontrol, supporting Air Navigation Service Providers throughout Europe with human factors, safety investigation, systems thinking and practice. Steven and Colin discuss learning from Work As Done, and how analysing work in high pressure areas of the business sector has led to a greater understanding of how this practice impacts safety as a whole. KEY TAKEAWAYS Hindsight is a democratised platform, featuring input and articles from those at the sharp end of the business, which provides a far more valuable set of insights. Air traffic levels have dropped to around 50% of their former operations, but many do not realise that the pandemic has seen system-wide effects, including reduced revenue, which impacts resourcing. Skill-fade has become a challenge, as skills do fade from mis-use, especially in the aviation industry. This has led to an increase in off-site training, including simulations. Wellbeing presents a unique challenge, especially in human factors and ergonomics. It is constantly trying to find a balancing act between wellbeing, safety, productivity and efficiency. BEST MOMENTS 'In some cases it's like you're on a permanent night shift' 'There are issues of wellbeing which in some cases are intangible' 'The safety risks remain, regardless of traffic' 'The workload and the risk are not positively correlated' VALUABLE RESOURCES The Interesting Health & Safety Podcast - https://podcasts.apple.com/vn/podcast/the-interesting-health-safety-podcast/id1467771449 Steven Shorrock LinkedIn - https://www.linkedin.com/in/steveshorrock/?originalSubdomain=fr ABOUT THE HOST Colin Nottage ‘Making health and safety as important as everything else we do.'
My guest today is Andrew Charlton, MD at Aviation Advocacy, an independent aviation focused strategic consultant and true aviation industry geek. Even though Andrew has spent last 3 decades in the business, I have to admit I´ve just discovered him recently, as he is moderating Aviation HardTalk series for Eurocontrol where he interviews some of the most respected aviation leaders. We obviously touched on that a little bit and we also discussed how bad we are in promoting some of the miraculous solutions aviation industry has brought to the mankind. On the other hand, Andrew also described his critical views on the current environment and a lack of true leadership which would help us to move forward.

In this episode, Marylin Bastin, Head of Aviation Sustainability at EUROCONTROL joins us for a discussion on the European Green Deal and its implications for the aviation sector. We discuss critical issues on the European aviation agenda, including barriers to route optimisation and how the implementation of the Single European Sky can support the reduction in aviation emissions. Furthermore, we touch upon the measures that airports can implement to mitigate both air- and noise-pollution stemming from airplanes and airport operations. Not least, we discuss the future of aviation in the post-Covid-19 period: Can climate-resilient growth be achieved? Could Covid-19 be transformed into an opportunity for a more sustainable and resilient European aviation?
This week, Eamonn Brennan tells Jarlath about the challenge of controlling the skies over Europe during the biggest crisis the aviation industry has ever seen. We hear the story of how he went from growing up and studying in Galway to becoming one of the most important people in global travel and business. Eamonn discusses his journey towards winning the election for the Director General of Eurocontrol and the real reason why Ireland is so crucial to global aviation (15:00). With a wealth of experience in constructing business deals at the highest level, Eamonn discusses the art of negotiating (45:00) and what he finds refreshing about Greta Thunberg in light of recent pressure for greener travel (27:00). From his pessimism about Brexit (48:00) to the concept of unmanned passenger aeroplanes in the future (50:00), why having a political awareness is important in the aviation business to avoid tripping up (20:00) and much more, this is a thoroughly enjoyable conversation with a true legend of global travel. NATO cooperates with different partners all around the world to ensure its operations can run smoothly. Engaging with civil aviation is key in an increasingly busy airspace. Therefore, NATO works together with organisations such as ICAO (International Civil Aviation Organization) and EUROCONTROL for accommodation of military operations, planning of military exercises, day-to-day information-sharing, executing air policing activities, as well as working on projects to ensure safety of air traffic in different regions. One of the more notable civil-military initiatives by ICAO – the Baltic Sea Project Team – recently brought together NATO and Russia alongside other countries to cooperate in ensuring safety of air operations over the Baltic Sea. Footage includes interviews with representatives from NATO, ICAO, EUROCONTROL, as well as shots of air policing, a NATO Aviation Committee meeting, and various civil and military aircraft.
Recent publications from EUROCONTROL (the European Organisation for the Safety of Air Navigation) provide a concise and accessible way to learn the principles & practices of Systems Thinking for Safety. This provides a quick way to establish a foundation of fundamental principles and practical advice for organizations adopting Blameless Postmortems as part of their DevOps practices.

The aircraft that is normally used for calibrating French airport equipment was specially equipped to conduct precision approaches guided by the European Geostationary Navigation Overlay Service (EGNOS). The ATR42 plane of the Direction Générale de l'Aviation Civile (DGAC – French Civil Aviation Authority) performed a number of test approaches and landings at Limoges airport. One of the main advantages of EGNOS in this application is that it is available everywhere without the need for ground infrastructure and it provides vertical guidance for every runway. Furthermore, in the cockpit the data display is the same as for the conventional Instrument Landing System ( ILS), so there are no familiarisation problems for the pilots and no additional training costs. EGNOS, the first European satellite navigation service, launched by the European Space Agency, the European Commission and Eurocontrol, is currently in pre-operational service and will be certified for safety-of-life applications such as civil aviation in 2008.ESApod video programme
