He just wants to work on the drums all day To commemorate four centuries in business, the Zildjian cymbal company commissioned Aaron Latos to build 400 snare drums from the same alloy that goes into their rides, crashes and high hats - staple elements of a jazz or rock drum set. Recipients include Sheila E., drummer's drummer Steve Gadd (Paul Simon's "50 Ways to Leave Your Lover") and tatted celebrity Travis Barker of Blink 182 (who survived a plane crash and dated Kim Kardashian). The anniversary passed in 2023 and Latos, who moved last year to Beacon with his wife and two young children, is 10 units shy of fulfilling the order. In the meantime, he's trying to perfect the manufacturing process for his own line of snares, tom-toms and bass drums crafted from nickel silver, which he assembles nearly from scratch in his Newburgh shop. Only the washers and tension rods clamping down the hoops that tune and tighten the drumheads are machined off-premises. By year's end, he plans to move the lathes, drills and rollers to a space in Beacon double the size of his current spot. Latos, 36, hails from West Virginia and made a living drumming in recording sessions and touring with country singer Margo Price. He performs around town with the Stephen Clair Band and takes on select students and studio projects. Drummers are notoriously picky about their gear and setup. Drum and cymbal angles must hit every time. Some prefer wood over metal snares. Others argue over tuning techniques. Every cymbal sounds different and comes in myriad shapes and sizes. Latos is so detail-oriented that he patented a snare drum throw-off system, the mechanism that lifts and holds down the coiled snare wires that add snap to the two and four beat of nearly every pop and rock song. His patent for the butt plate, which anchors the snares, is pending. "I'd have more patents, but they're expensive," he says. As far as he knows, Latos is the first to make nickel steel drums. He digs the sound, but the manufacturing process is like wrestling an alligator and presents "the most annoying and frustrating fabrication characteristics" that are "difficult to cut and work." The raw material arrives in long, flat sheets, like the plies of wood used in most drums. Labor consists of rolling, shearing and brazing them together. His loud, hefty snare drums pay homage to models used by big band jazz drummers in the 1920s and '30s designed to cut through 17-piece outfits in the days before specialized microphones. Weighty shells for his floor and rack toms are capped by silvery stainless steel and solid brass copper-colored hoops. Bass drums come with brown wood hoops. The end results are so striking that each piece looks like a sculpture. A basic snare costs $2,000 and a full drum kit starts at $10,000. Customers range from doctors and lawyers to pros, including Bob Meyer, a jazz cat and early adopter, Jeremiah Green of Modest Mouse (who died in 2023) and Harvey Sorgen, who has played with Hot Tuna, Derek Trucks and Paul Simon. Latos' workshop is relatively tidy, although gold and silver shavings litter the floor, including the rug in the cozy corner with a couch, turntable and pile of vinyl records capped by Mel Torme, Chuck Mangione and Haitian group Bossa Combo discs. "Every 22 minutes or so, I come over and flip the record," he says. "It helps me focus on what I am doing and what I should be doing." Latos Drums is located at 11 Spring St. in Newburgh and at latosdrums.com.

His family was deeply in debt and couldn't afford a grave site. He was, therefore, buried in an unmarked grave in the Old South Burial Ground of Boston Common. After his family's finances recovered, they intended to move the body to their family plot in Newport. However, they couldn't remember the exact location and his remains were never recovered. There is a monument to Stuart, his wife, and their children at the common burying ground in Newport. It's Friday and almost the weekend. Thoughts on the Origins of Pizzerias in America and Chicago

Culinary Historians of Chicago

Play Episode Listen Later Feb 16, 2021 131:36

Thoughts on the Origins of Pizzerias in America and Chicago with Peter Regas PizzaHistoryBook.com In the past, the historical consensus was the first licensed pizzeria in America was opened in 1905 at 53 Spring St. in New York City by a young Italian immigrant named Gennaro Lombardi. However, in 2019 at the U.S. Pizza Museum in Chicago, Peter Regas challenged that consensus with a talk titled “Filippo Milone and the Forgotten Pizza Makers of New York City.” Based on more than ten years of archival research, Regas makes the following claims. There’s no primary source evidence a then eighteen-year-old Gennaro Lombardi owned a pizzeria in 1905. Instead, sources show Lombardi briefly owned the 53 Spring St. pizzeria in 1908, re-purchased it from a relative in 1918, and continued to own it until his death in 1958. More significantly, when Lombardi bought the pizzeria in 1908 it had already been a pizzeria for several years. The now-famous pizzeria was probably established in 1898 by a previously forgotten but extremely significant pizza maker named Filippo Milone. It turns out, the Spring Street pizzeria was probably just one of at least six different New York City pizzerias established by Milone between the years 1894-1922. Born in Piano di Sorrento in 1862, Milone is one of several previously unknown New York City pizza makers of an earlier generation who decided to emigrate around the turn of the century from Italy’s Campania region. Which pizza maker of that earlier generation opened up the first pizzeria in America? Regas discovered Giovanni Albano, a former pizzeria owner from Naples, established the first currently verified pizzeria in 1894 at 59 ½ Mulberry St. in New York City. While there is evidence of earlier pizzerias the farther back in time one searches the more circumstantial the evidence becomes and the more one is forced to confront the distinction between a peddler, a bakery, and a dedicated pizzeria. In the upcoming presentation, Regas will also be presenting evidence of the first known pizzerias in Chicago. Tom Granato’s Pizzeria Napolitana established in 1924 at 907 W. Taylor St will be discussed along with many never-before-published Granato pizzeria photos. Long forgotten Chicago pizzerias in the 1930s and early 1940s will also be presented. Questions naturally flow when the historical record is revealed. Was there anyone before Granato? When did pizza become popular in Chicago? How and why was Chicago’s pizza history different than New York’s? Why were the taverns so dominant in Chicago’s pizza history? And finally what’s the deal with the tavern cut? Note, Regas will not be presenting his discoveries on the origins of Pizzeria Uno and Chicago deep-dish pizza in this talk. That subject is complicated enough to need a presentation dedicated exclusively to deep-dish pizza which is currently scheduled with the Chicago Foodways Roundtable for Thursday, May 13, 2021. Recorded on February 11, 2021 via ZOOM. CulinaryHistorians.com

Cities during wartime often eliminate outdoor lighting, and severely limit indoor lighting, to cut down on the effectiveness of air raids. Most famous of these blackouts are those utilized in Britain during the two World Wars, and particularly in London during the German raids of the Blitz. The Australian government used a similar tactic to combat Japanese air raids, though these restrictions were eased in the middle of 1942. Around that time, a killer prowled the streets, taking advantage of the darkened conditions. September 20th Strike for Climate. Episode 4 Interviews: Vivien Langford,Production :Andy Britt and Michaela Stubbs JAGVEER SINGH from the Students Strike4Climate group tells Vivien the logistics of getting as many people as we can to show up on Friday 20th September.  Research by Chernowith says that significant shifts can be achieved if 3.5% of the population are visible. The students have calculated that is about 850,000 Australians. Will you be one of them? Behind that there is a large group who know the urgency of climate action but cannot be there on the day. Can you use this week to invite as many people as you can to Treasury Gardens in Melbourne 2pm. 2-18 Spring St or the gathering that is nearest to you in one over 50 cities.  At 9.30 am if you can get to Brighton Beach there is a DEEP TIME WALK to give you an insight into the interconnectedness of all life. "We are in the thick of a climate crisis. Yet we just elected a Government that wants to open up the floodgates to new coal, oil and gas projects that put all of us at risk"     schoolstrike4climate.com  JASON JOHNS  used to present a radio show. He is a Uniting Earth Ministry Consultant with the Uniting Church. He admires the courage of the students. "The fact that they are taking action is great because action is the best way to avoid depression"From his background in  Ecology and Permaculture he has lots of ideas about the way forward. "As there is a correlation between wealth and emissions, on average our students (in church schools) will be among the highest polluters in Australia and the world."  They  are showing leadership. "The question is not whether the church should encourage students to "strike" They have already decided to...… ...….Surely at least we might go along to ensure their safety. Volunteer as marshalls. Take water for people. Show hospitality with some snacks."Support the student strikers/website/unitingearth.org.au  TEJOPALA RAWLS is an ordained Buddhist and keen Climate Campaigner. He discusses with Vivien the message  of The Shambhala warrior training by Akuppa and how to cultivate the great courage we require.  "Do not meet power on its own terms. Train in non violence of speech and mind. Work on your state of mind." It is a wide ranging conversation about how to endure, to sit with your fear, to know that anger is just energy but you can stop it polarizing people. In 1944, an American soldier discovered a Yorkshire terrier in an abandoned foxhole in New Guinea. We'll also contemplate chicken spectacles and puzzle over a gratified diner. Intro: In 1955 a Wisconsin supermarket manager fulfilled the requirements for a promotional trip to Mars.
