I went to films

This week we're going back in time with what Mike calls the "Dream Warriors" of the Paranormal Franchise with its third installment. Rather than continue the cliffhanger ending of its sneak prequel, directors Henry Joost and Ariel Schulman travel back to the 80s to show audiences just how Katie and Kristi got mixed up with Tobi the demon to begin with (spoiler alert: it's those damned witches). The end result might be the most entertaining entry of the series, with scares coming from start to finish, and great additions like an oscillating fan ratcheting up the tension even further. Plus, we get Dennis, the first positive male role model in the franchise to date, as he does his best to get to the bottom of the mystery and protect his two step children. This week we're joined once again by Mary Beth McAndrews to talk about a movie she says "had to walk so Hereditary could run"     If you like what you're listening to make sure to subscribe wherever you get your podcast feeds.  Please take a moment to rate and review us on the Apple Podcast app, or rate us on the Spotify app. Reviews and five star ratings help new listeners find us every day, and we greatly appreciate the feedback and support.  Check out our website for easy access to our full catalog of shows, with hundreds of hours of free content. Inspired by the recent release of 'Black Panther: Wakanda Forever' (2022), Imo and James decide to explore Black representation in the science-fiction/super-hero fantasy genre (specifically, sci-fi movies that centre Black protagonists/characters). The first curated film of the season is 'Project Power' (2020), starring Jamie Foxx, Dominique Fishback and Joseph Gordon-Levitt, and directed by Henry Joost and Ariel Schulman. Picking up on this theme, the critics discuss how Joost and Schulman's sci-fi thriller deal with the US healthcare system, Hurricane Katrina, and the Tuskegee Experiment all within a compact feature film that also has equal measures of style, bombast and heart. Is the movie an unappreciated power-punch or just dealing in stereotypes?

Catfish host Nev Schulman shares tips for protecting yourself against online scams. Guest Biography In a world where everyone is constantly connected digitally, social media has made communicating easier but this digital world might also complicate relationships. According to MTV “Millenials” 18-24 years old, 1 in 4 has online dated, 1 in 2 has “a friend” who does it and, in the past three years, traffic to top 10 online dating sites has tripled. Now hear from the star and host of MTV's hit series CATFISH: THE TV SHOW, Nev Schulman, about his experiences and perspectives on this evolving medium. Following the success of Rogue Pictures and Relativity Media's critically acclaimed 2010 documentary-thriller CATFISH, MTV's new hit series CATFISH: THE TV SHOW tackles the mystery and complexities of dating in a digital world. The series follows host, Nev Schulman, whose own online love drama was the subject of the “Catfish” film, as he takes viewers on a deeply personal journey that goes inside the stories of young people as their online-only romantic relationships collide with first-time, real-life encounters. In late 2007, filmmakers Ariel Schulman and Henry Joost sensed a story unfolding as they began to film the life of Ariel's brother, Nev. They had no idea that their project would lead to the most exhilarating and unsettling months of their lives. A reality thriller that is a shocking product of our times, Catfish is a riveting story of love, deception and grace within a labyrinth of online intrigue. The film was produced by academy award nominated filmmaker, Andrew Jarecki and was executive produced by Brett Ratner. Prior to CATFISH, Schulman was a New York City photographer and filmmaker, and the youngest member of Supermarché. His photography has appeared in magazines and newspapers such as Vogue, The New York Times, Lucky, New York magazine, the New York Sun and Dance Magazine. He now resides in Los Angeles. We watched Paranormal Activity 3 and I literally had nightmares. This movie has taken the tried and true formula from the first few, sharpened it, and really knocks it out of the park in terms of scares. @dgoebel00 on Instagram provided this amazing artwork. Follow him and check out his website. (0:49) - Intro(6:00) -Synopsis(8:45) -Review(20:50) -Score(27:30) -Spoilers(1:03:40) - Final Recommendations(1:07:10) - Taglines(1:11:54) -Outro Watch Paranormal Activity 3Watch on AmazonClick here to Watch https://youtu.be/90r3CnPI0AM Synopsis While the first movie in the series focused on Katie (Katie Featherston), and the second focused on her sister, Kristi (Sprague Grayden) while they are in the present, the third installment focuses on their childhood. Katie and Kristi are at home in Carlsbad, CA in 1988 with their sexy mom, Julie (Lauren Bittner) and her remarkably likeable boyfriend, Dennis (Christopher Nicholas Smith). Strange sounds and movements start to happen throughout the house and Dennis, who owns a wedding video film taping company takes a big interest in catching this on tape. Kristi, the youngest girl, has an imaginary friend named Toby, and well, Toby fucking sucks. Julie's mother doesn't seem to approve of her dating Dennis. Eventually our ill fated family get more paranormal activity than they bargained for. Review Directed by Henry Joost and Ariel Schulman, Paranormal Activity 3 blows me away. So much about this movie works and it scares me to death.  With the kids being a central focus of the happenings in the house, I am basically on high alert right from the beginning.  The stationary cameras that are the calling card of this series are done so well in this that I still think about it when I think about framing and timing perfection within film. There is a reason for almost everything that happens in Paranormal Activity 3 that is rooted in decent enough logic and for everything else the scares are so intense that I can't be upset. The way this movie uses sound is masterful. The slight movement of boring objects around the house keeps me on the edge of my seat.  Producers, take note. For the low cost of some fishing line, you can scare me way more than if you pay a huge crew of computer animators to design a monster that runs around and skins people. Mostly, the tension is the highlight of Paranormal Activity 3. While it may not work for everyone, I think the build and release cycles of tension in this are second to none. Every single time it day turned to night in this film, I was shook.   Score 10/10 Final Recommendations If found footage is something that you even mildly enjoy, this is a master class. Of the first three, I think this one is the scariest to me, and I love the oscillating fan cam!

Before Catfish: The TV show which Nev presents, unveiling Catfishes all over the states, he was in fact Catfished himself, documented by directors Ariel Schulman (his brother) and Henry Joost in Catfish: The Movie (2010). In the film, Nev is in contact with a family over Facebook, who him and his friends soon realise might not be who they say they are. Despite this unsettling premise, perhaps the most scary part of re-watching this decade old documentary is how much people used to use Facebook to seemingly update the world on the most evidently boring parts of their life. In a strange way, Catfish actually exposes how much Facebook has changed, from status updates asking you what you had for breakfast, to TELL US YOUR POLITICAL LEANINGS. NOW. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀Ultimately Catfish is a positive piece of film, that shows us we’re all a lot better when we’re honest. Like when Louis admits on this very episode he may well have been Catfished himself when he was 12 years old (admit it, who wasn’t on MSN messenger). This is also our first documentary, and we spend an inordinate amount of time discussing the difference between a film and doc, when we probably should have just been reviewing the film. Anyway, you’ve seen what we really look like, right? Guys…..guys? ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀Happy listening.

Project Power, the latest Netflix action-adventure hit, has a new spin on super powers: What if a pill could make you outrageously powerful — for just five minutes? The film by Henry Joost and Ariel Schulman, written by The Batman co-writer Mattson Tomlin, stars a trio of stellar actors: Jamie Foxx, Joseph Gordon-Levitt and Dominique Fishback. But it also raises a question about the current action movie emphasis on universe-building: How can a movie tell a self-enclosed story while also hinting at the endless sequels and spinoffs to come? Can a movie do too good a job of universe-building, to the point that its main story feels incomplete? We liked Project Power well enough, don't get us wrong. But we wondered at times if it was doing too much... or not enough. It definitely gave us a lot to talk about. See acast.com/privacy for privacy and opt-out information.

Calling all Supes! Calling all Supes! Is that what they call them? I just realized that the people who get powers in this don't have the nicknames! Every person with powers in all these different alternative anti-superhero properties now all have nicknames, but they don't give the addicts in this movie any names! Very strange! Anyways, on today's episode of Talkin' TV, Chris & I sit down to discuss, as stated above, the latest installment in what I'm going to call the anti-superhero movement that we've been seeing in the last year and a half. Ever since Avengers: Endgame, we've been seeing property after property that seems to want to deconstruct out love of superheroes as part of pop culture and history, most of the time to the point where it makes us wonder what it is that's so special about superheroes in the first place!!! From The Boys to Joker to Watchmen to The Umbrella Academy and more, the current pop culture landscape seems to be doing everything opposite what Marvel was doing. And now we have the latest part of that rhetoric, Project Power. Project Power is directed by Henry Joost & Ariel Schulman, the infamous catfish people who directed 2016's "Nerve," and written by Mattson Tomlin, who is penning the new Batman script starring Robert Pattinson. It stars Jamie Foxx, Joseph Gordon-Levitt & Dominique Fishback and takes place in a world, specifically New Orleans, in which pills capable of giving superpowers to people for only five minutes exist. The movie takes an interesting approach, treating the idea of having superpowers like a drug rather than a gift that most people believe it to be. And Chris and I went to town on this one, as we both certainly had our opinions. Does the film actually capitalize on its insanely original premise or does it simply devolve into cliched storytelling, character tropes we've seen before and poor filmmaking? Find out on today's episode of Talkin' TV!!! --- This episode is sponsored by · Anchor: The easiest way to make a podcast. https://anchor.fm/app

“The power goes where it always goes, to the people that already have it.”2020 has given us a new understanding of what dog days can mean. Historically the label has been reserved for the hottest days of the year because ancient peoples believed it could bring “fever or catastrophe.” Upon consideration, “Fever & Catastrophe” could be an accurate tagline for a film named 2020. Coming out of that traditional period of extreme summer heat, the release of new films to streaming services and video on demand has become normalized. We're now seeking it out for primary new content as opposed to supplemental diamonds in the rough. This past weekend Netflix released Project Power for subscribers and aspects of it infer the makings of a regular theatrical release. It stars Jamie Foxx and Joseph Gordon-Levitt and is a story about pills being circulated in New Orleans and other cities giving people short periods of great powers. The film feels somewhat super hero adjacent so is that the reason for its theater adjacent release or is it more evidence of the industry's transition to an ongoing world of “Theater at Home?” The Film Board gathers to spoil the project for you and give you a full disclosure of the documented effects of these drugs so you can decide for yourself if its something you want to ingest. Netflix Originals are hit or miss. Can they be enjoyable? Sure. Can they have big budgets? Sure. Can they have top rated stars? They sure do. So, this week we are going to talk about Project Power a 2020 American superhero film directed by Ariel Schulman and Henry Joost, produced by Eric Newman and Bryan Unkeless, and written by Mattson Tomlin. It stars Jamie Foxx, Joseph Gordon-Levitt, and Dominique Fishback, alongside Colson Baker, Rodrigo Santoro, Amy Landecker and Allen Maldonado, and follows a drug dealer, police officer, and former soldier who team up to stop the distribution of a pill that gives the user superpowers for five minutes. The concept of this film is quite similar to a 2016 Indian Tamil-language science fiction action film Iru Mugan written and directed by Anand Shankar. --- This episode is sponsored by · Anchor: The easiest way to make a podcast. https://anchor.fm/app --- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/goingfullnerd/message

This week's BEHIND THE LENS is all about the words on the page – the script; the ideas, the process, the characters, the tension, the action. And we've got two terrific exclusive interviews today with insight into the screenwriting process thanks to CAROLINE GOODALL and MATTSON TOMLIN, both of whom I spoke with late last week. First up, take a listen to my conversation with CAROLINE GOODALL. You may know her best for her decades of work as an actor in films like "Hook" or "The Princess Diaries" (as Mia's mom) or her television work in series like "Berlin Station", "The White Queen", and "Bulletproof", but now Caroline puts pen to paper as screenwriter of THE BAY OF SILENCE starring Claes Bang, Olga Kurylenko, and Brian Cox. Adapted from the novel of the same name by Lisa St. Aubin de Teran, listen as Caroline talks about the appeal of the novel for her and breaking it down for film, developing POV and character, deviating from the novel, as well as giving insight into the visual details and metaphor, not to mention her role as a boots on the ground producer of the film and what that entailed, including those pesky financial considerations. Then you'll hear what screenwriter MATTSON TOMLIN has to say about his new Netflix film – PROJECT POWER starring Jamie Foxx, Joseph Gordon-Levitt, and Dominique Fishback, and directed by Ariel Schulman and Henry Joost. An original screenplay with some very original ideas, Mattson talks about the genesis of the story, the research that went into developing and bringing many of the ideas within the film to life with an organic realism, characters, finding the heart of the story, working with Henry & Rel, and more! (Sorry folks – no scoop on "The Batman" but Mattson does talk a bit about his next film that hits theatres before "The Batman" – "Little Fish.") http://behindthelensonline.net http://eliasentertainmentnetwork.com

Today, the Kicking the Seat Podcast once again summons Earth’s Mightiest Critics to review a new Netflix comic-book movie. But there’s a twist: Henry Joost and Ariel Schulman’s Project Power isn’t actually based on a comic book! The film stars Jamie Foxx, Joseph Gordon-Levitt, and Dominque Fishback as New Orleans residents combating a dangerous new street drug that grants users random superpowers…for five minutes. Ian enjoyed the movie, which he considers flawed but oddly fresh, and faced some hearty opposition from Keeping it Reel's David Fowlie, Emmanuel Noisette of EMan’s Movie Reviews, and Don Shanahan of Every Movie Has a Lesson. This spoiler-filled deep dive into all things Project Power is a CGI slug-fest all its own! Also, Ian reviews the new Cold War era sci-fi thriller, Sputnik, which is now available On Demand and on the big screen at the Music Box Theatre this weekend! We went old school this week with a documentary from 2010 that exposed deception on the internet and gave it the cute name "Catfish."  Nev Schulman, Ariel Schulman, and Henry Joost document the relationship between Nev and 8 year old wunderkind, Abby.  Abby paints canvases of Nev's beautiful photography and sends them to him as gifts.  Nev soon develops relationships with Abby's mother and a romantic relationship with Abby's 19 year old sister.  But is everyone who they say they are?   . . This is a fascinating look at life on the internet and how easily we can build a world that appears perfect when the reality is much different. .   --- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/onthedoc/message

O terror (de casa mal-assombrada) The Woman in Black, de James Watkins.
