On the 62nd Episode of the Album Review Crew of Shout It Out Loudcast, Tom, Zeus & special guest, singer, guitarist and bassist from the Ace Frehley Band, Gene Simmons Band and also Rock City Machine Co, Ryan Spencer Cook, review the 1968 legendary album from Elvis Presley, "NBC TV Special" or better known as the "1968 Comeback Special." By 1968 Elvis had not performed live since 1960. Although, his movie career had been a tremendous success, even making him the highest paid actor in Hollywood, Elvis was not satisfied creatively. His music had been basically soundtracks to his movies and Elvis was frustrated. Since Elvis rocket stardom was born out of his legendary television performance, Elvis and along with young television producer Steve Binder, created a TV Special that would become affectionately known as the 1968 Comeback Special. Ignoring his manager Colonel Tom Parker's insistence that the TV Special be a Christmas theme event, Elvis & Steve Binder created a TV Special that would end up being the highest rated tv show of the year gaining 42% of the television audience. This special brought the KING back! The television special including various types of performances. Elvis performed some of his greatest hits, sometimes alone, sometimes with his original band in an intimate round setting, sometimes in sketches and even with dancers and gospel singers. The songs were varied and styles as well, matching Elvis' versatile appeal. The audience was young and attractive and Elvis wore various outfits, including the leather outfit which has become legendary and synonymous with this performance. Elvis never looked as good or sounded as good as well. The album went to number 8 on US Billboard charts and eventually platinum. There are numerous variations of this album and special releases that include a lot of the songs not featured in the television special. But all versions, include his incredible medley of Trouble / Guitar Man and the medley of his biggest hits like Love Me Tender, Hound Dog, Heartbreak Hotel, All Shook up and more. The album does include his single, If I Can Dream, which may be Elvis' greatest performance of all time. As usual the boys breakdown and dissect the tracks and rank the songs. They then rank the album and the album cover against the previous albums reviewed on the Album Review Crew. This was obviously Zeus' pick. After an intensive holiday season, we're taking a week off, so from the TCBCast Patreon archives we bring an episode from December 2023 when Bec and Justin convened to explore the Top 20 hits during the week in early 1969 that "If I Can Dream" peaked at #12, the highest it would reach on the Hot 100. What kept Elvis out of the Top 10? Turns out a lot of really iconic music! Unlike our usual Billboard charts episodes, the duo decide to go for broke and cover all of the Top 20, not just to include Elvis, but numerous other iconic songs of 1969 from acts as far reaching as Dusty Springfield, Jay and the Americans, The Turtles, Marvin Gaye, Sly & the Family Stone, BJ Thomas, Tommy James & the Shondells and many more. Then, we jump in our time machine back to November 2021's bonus episode and hear Gurdip and Justin's "Songs of the Month," as Gurdip spotlights a very Elvis-and-Buddy-Holly-influenced rockabilly cut from Buddy Knox, "Party Doll," while Justin picks "Three Cigarettes in an Ashtray" a beautiful but an otherwise largely overlooked Patsy Cline tune occasionally encountered in a famous video game, and which manages to have a TON of Elvis connections. Eric Hollerbach started doing stand-up open mics at 16 in NYC. After a dozen shows, and before his senior year of Highschool, Eric started training with the Upright Citizens Brigade improv theater. A week before he graduated from Eugene Lang College, he was performing on the UCB MainStage. In 2009, Eric moved to Los Angeles, where he continued to perform Improv and stand-up comedy while working on reality shows. He worked on Shark Tank, Amazing Race, Hulu's If I Can Dream, and many more. In Los Angeles, Eric produced a few of his own projects including the pilot Damien Shadows PI: Psychic Investigator and the webseries Here Comes Godot. He's also produced, and hosted the feature-length short-horror-film anthology Theater of the Deranged II. (Out on DVD, Blu Ray, & VOD with Troma.) From 2014-2017 Eric lived in New Orleans and attained his MFA in Screenwriting from the University of New Orleans. There he did stand-up 4-7 nights a week, and graduated with a 4.0 GPA. By the time the ninth studio album was put out, The Beatles had achieved astounding critical and popular success. Their only double-album was self-titled. However it has become known as The White Album because, unlike the color and art of the prior Sargent Peppers album, this one was entirely without color, white, with simply the name "The Beatles" on the cover. Much of the songs on the album were created while the band was on a Transcendental Meditation retreat in India, and that influence can be felt in the scaled down, often acoustic feel of the songs.The band was also beginning to fragment, and arguments or hurt feelings would cause some of the songs to be recorded by just part of the group. Yoko Ono would become a constant presence with Lennon in the studio, contributing to the tension. Despite the iconic status the album achieved virtually from its release, there were still detractors. Some criticized songs like ”Back in the U.S.S.R.” to be too sympathetic of communism and accused the group of trying to brainwash American youth. Those on the left found the non-activist message of songs like “Revolution” to be a betrayal of leftist ideology during a period of intense social upheaval. And perhaps most famously, Charles Manson claimed inspiration for his violence in many songs from the album.Today, The White Album is rightfully considered one of the greatest albums of the rock era. We hope this podcast will encourage you to explore the album more fully. Back In the U.S.S.R.Mike Love of The Beach Boys was one of the participants in the Transcendental Meditation retreat. McCartney was encouraged by Mike Love to create a Soviet version of "California Girls." with this song. The name of the song was inspired by Chuck Berry's "Back In The U.S.A." McCartney plays drums on this single, as Ringo Starr briefly quit during this time.Dear PrudenceThe inspiration for this Lennon-penned song is Prudence Farrow, Mia Farrow's sister, who was also at the TM retreat. Prudence took the meditation so seriously that she fell into a catatonic state, which obviously worried the entire group. The song was written to lift her spirits. McCartney also played drums on this song in Starr's absence.While My Guitar Gently WeepsGeorge Harrison matured greatly as a songwriter on this album, and this is one of his more famous contributions. Lennon and McCartney were not enthusiastic about including this song, but relented when Harrison brought his friend Eric Clapton in to play (uncredited) on this song. The members of the Beatles were at each others throats at the time, and Clapton's presence exerted a calming influence on the band. This was also the first song in which Ringo Starr played drums after his return to the group.Helter SkelterAfter reading an interview of Pete Townshend in which he described a Who track, Paul McCartney was inspired to write the "loudest, nastiest, sweatiest rock number we could." This track is infamously associated with Charles Manson and the Tate-LaBianca murders. ENTERTAINMENT TRACK:“Baby What You Want Me to Do” by Elvis PresleyThis month saw the release of Elvis's TV Comeback Special, "If I Can Dream." It was the highest rated show for the year of 1968. STAFF PICKS:“Hooked on a Feeling” by B.J. ThomasBruce gets the staff picks started this week with a song made famous by the motion picture "Guardians of the Galaxy." Written by Mark James, B.J. Thomas did the original in 1968. The track would be covered by Jonathan King in 1971, and then by Blue Swede in 1974, the Blue Swede cover being the one with which most are familiar.“Cinnamon” by DerekRob's upbeat staff pick was designed so that singer Johnny Cymbal could avoid being pigeonholed as a novelty singer. As a result, he went by the name, “Derek” for this release — which was his brother's name, Derek Cymbal. “I Got a Line on You” by SpiritWayne's pick is another upbeat track, this one from the Spirit album "The Family That Plays Together." The album got its name because lead guitarist was playing with his stepfather as drummer. Jay Ferguson was also in this band, who wrote the score for the American version of the television series "The Office." This track peaked at number 25.“Kentucky Woman” by Deep PurpleBrian features an unusual cover of Neil Diamond's 1967 original in a style that some call the first heavy metal song. The song was on the psychedelic and Arthurian album entitled "The Book of Taliesyn." INSTRUMENTAL TRACK:“Joy of a Toy” by Soft MachineThis prog rock/psychedelic instrumental takes us out this week.

Someone says to program director Stu Ferguson, 'Whose broadcast is this, anyway?' Ferguson takes the comment in stride. 'Red's in his element when he lets others with his experience do the talking.' Although the spotlight has shone on Robinson since his teenage years, he's part of a tightly knit community of fellow travellers and loves when the attention directed at him is disseminated to include them. At this point in the broadcast, younger people at CISL may well have wondered why so much attention was being paid to singers who are merely recognizable names in the 21st century, nostalgia value notwithstanding. Recordareis que habíamos dejado de citar a uno de los grupos que también tuvieron una enorme importancia en el prestigioso grupo que denominamos “de vanguardia”. Esta banda no es otra que Jethro Tull. Jethro Tull fue una banda de rock progresivo británica, que comenzó su andadura a finales de 1967, hasta su separación en el 2014, siendo uno de los grupos de rock más longevos. Desde sus inicios, este grupo ha vendido más de 60 millones de copias de sus más de 30 álbumes, siendo uno de los grupos con mayores ventas de la historia del rock. Siempre ha sido liderado por el cantante y flautista escocés Ian Anderson, que es el autor de prácticamente todas las canciones del grupo, y de hecho el grupo se ha comportado siempre como el apoyo de este músico, y es que es el único que ha estado en toda la historia de la banda desde el primer disco, y solo el guitarrista Martin Barre se le acerca, estando en el grupo desde el segundo. La banda logró mucha popularidad en la primera mitad de los años setenta con álbumes emblemáticos en la historia del rock como Aqualung y Thick as a Brick, y con el tiempo llegó a convertirse en un grupo de culto. Hemos escuchado el corte que da título al disco, Agualund. Oiremos ahora Thick as a brick, otra delicia de canción, perteneciente al disco del mismo título. La música de este grupo, encuadrada en el rock progresivo, constituye una mezcla muy original de blues, folk inglés y hard rock, con pinceladas de música barroca, música medieval inglesa e incluso renacentista. El grupo desarrolla además una vertiente dedicada a originales canciones acústicas de difícil clasificación. En su sonido, destaca de forma particular la flauta de Ian Anderson, tocada de una forma magistral, que ha sido y sigue constituyendo una de las inconfundibles características de la banda, así como el sonido desgarrado de la guitarra eléctrica de Martin Barre, finamente entrelazado con el de la flauta de Anderson. Vamos a pararnos por un momento en una serie de solos de este magnífico guitarrista: Martin Barre a la guitarra. Bien, no? Una grandísimo instrumentista. Durante algunos años, el grupo incluyó también, al mismo tiempo, dos brillantes teclistas, con lo que obtuvo un sonido de particular colorido y dimensión: los maestros John Evan y David Palmer. Este último realizaba además los arreglos orquestales. La participación del sobresaliente bajista y cantante John Glascock, -fallecido en 1979- dotó a la banda de un timbre muy personal, con una segunda voz y un excelente apoyo vocal y armónico. La formación también ha utilizado una gran variedad de instrumentos, barrocamente combinados, en su mayoría tocados por el propio Ian Anderson, como el laúd, la mandolina, la balalaica, el saxofón, la armónica, la gaita, el acordeón y diversas clases de flautas. Salvo contadas excepciones, todos los temas interpretados por el grupo han sido compuestos por Ian Anderson, auténtico líder y factótum del grupo. Anderson es un personaje camaleónico, tanto en su aspecto como en su capacidad para reinventar continuamente su propia música, lo cual ha permitido a Jethro Tull mantenerse joven a pesar de los años. Los despedimos con otro de sus éxitos: Nothing Is Easy En esta época, y alejándonos ya de esta vanguardia, se dio un fenómeno de mercadotecnia que alumbró a una serie de grupos “fantasma” o que, por lo menos, no se regían como bandas al uso sino que servían fielmente a los intereses exclusivos de las discográficas. Lógicamente eran grupos comerciales a más no poder. Uno de ellos, que en España tuvo una buena acogida, fue Ohio Express. Este grupo estadounidense se creó a finales de la década de 1960, editó multitud de sencillos de éxito en sus orígenes, entre los que destaca Yummy Yummy Yummy. Tras su separación en 1970, el grupo ha vuelto a estar activo de forma esporádica. Aunque el nombre hacía referencia a un "grupo", es más realista considerar a Ohio Express como una marca empleada por la compañía discográfica Super K Productions para hacer dinero rápido. Otro de estos grupos que alcanzó el éxito en la época y que pertenece a la misma categoría de “Grupos Fantasma” son The Monkees. The Monkees fue una banda de rock formada en 1966 en Los Angeles y fue creada originalmente para una serie de televisión del mismo nombre en la cadena NBC. Los miembros de la banda fueron seleccionados entre más de 500 jóvenes (entre los rechazados estaban músicos que después fueron famosos como Stephen Stills, ya que los productores estaban más interesados en crear un producto comercial que tener músicos con talento que tocasen o compusiesen música). El espectáculo contaba con un sentido del humor irreverente, muy similar o más bien copiado al de "A Hard Day's Night", la primera película protagonizada por The Beatles; además de esto sólo dos de ellos eran músicos y el resto aprendió a tocar sobre la marcha. A partir del disco Headquarters ya podían tocar los instrumentos sin organizar ningún desaguisado en la grabación y así lo hicieron. Desgraciadamente para ellos salió a la venta el álbum de The Beatles, Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band y fueron desplazados del número 1 después de sólo una semana. Recordareis que habíamos dejado de citar a uno de los grupos que también tuvieron una enorme importancia en el prestigioso grupo que denominamos “de vanguardia”. Esta banda no es otra que Jethro Tull. Jethro Tull fue una banda de rock progresivo británica, que comenzó su andadura a finales de 1967, hasta su separación en el 2014, siendo uno de los grupos de rock más longevos. Desde sus inicios, este grupo ha vendido más de 60 millones de copias de sus más de 30 álbumes, siendo uno de los grupos con mayores ventas de la historia del rock. Siempre ha sido liderado por el cantante y flautista escocés Ian Anderson, que es el autor de prácticamente todas las canciones del grupo, y de hecho el grupo se ha comportado siempre como el apoyo de este músico, y es que es el único que ha estado en toda la historia de la banda desde el primer disco, y solo el guitarrista Martin Barre se le acerca, estando en el grupo desde el segundo. La banda logró mucha popularidad en la primera mitad de los años setenta con álbumes emblemáticos en la historia del rock como Aqualung y Thick as a Brick, y con el tiempo llegó a convertirse en un grupo de culto. Hemos escuchado el corte que da título al disco, Agualund. Oiremos ahora Thick as a brick, otra delicia de canción, perteneciente al disco del mismo título. La música de este grupo, encuadrada en el rock progresivo, constituye una mezcla muy original de blues, folk inglés y hard rock, con pinceladas de música barroca, música medieval inglesa e incluso renacentista. El grupo desarrolla además una vertiente dedicada a originales canciones acústicas de difícil clasificación. En su sonido, destaca de forma particular la flauta de Ian Anderson, tocada de una forma magistral, que ha sido y sigue constituyendo una de las inconfundibles características de la banda, así como el sonido desgarrado de la guitarra eléctrica de Martin Barre, finamente entrelazado con el de la flauta de Anderson. Born in Rio de Janeiro, he initially was drawn to hip hop before taking up ballet aged 12, joining the Royal Ballet in 2002. He is dancing the role of Rasputin in the Royal Ballet's production of Anastasia by Kenneth MacMillan. It tells the true story of Anna Anderson, who claimed to be the Grand Duchess Anastasia, youngest daughter of Tsar Nicholas II and sole survivor of the brutal assassination of the Russian Royal Family in 1918.
