What the Riff?!?

What The Riff?!? makes another "stab" at Halloween with these theme songs, movie and TV music, and rock songs with a bent towards the macabre.  We hope you enjoy this second "Halloween" special! Hungry Like the Wolf by Duran Duran  This is the breakthrough song off Duran Duran's Rio album.  It was inspired by the Big Bad Wolf in the Little Red Riding Hood story.  It is also wone of the first times where video popularity drove the success of the band, with Duran Duran on constant play for the new MTV station.Dead Man's Party by Oingo Boingo  Danny Elfman fronted this new wave band before he became famous for his work on film scores.  It also appeared in the comedy film "Back to School" starring Rodney Dangerfield. This Is Halloween by Marilyn Manson  Oingo Boingo wrote this track for "The Nightmare Before Christmas," and shock rocker Marilyn Manson takes on this cover.Theme from the "Harry Potter" film series  The Wizarding world of Harry Potter has been an enduring franchise, and this music draws us into that world from the first few notes.Pet Sematary by The Ramones  Steven King was a big fan of the Ramones, and invited the band to his place in Maine.  While there Dee Dee Ramone wandered into the basement with a copy of King's "Pet Sematary" and returned an hour later with the lyrics to this song.Bad Things by Jace Everett  "True Blood" is a series on HBO based on a novel called "The Southern Vampire Mysteries," and the show portrays vampires in a campy, dark comedy style.  Country singer-songwriter Jace Everett provided the intro music to this series.Werewolf Bar Mitzvah by Donald Glover and Tracy Morgan  A skit in the television series "30 Rock" would produce this song.  Originally a 7-second clip from a skit, it was turned into a full fledged Halloween novelty song due to popular demand.Witch Doctor by David Seville  The origins of this song go back to 1958, where Seville tells the story of how a guy learned to talk to girls from a witch doctor friend.  It has become a well known novelty song covered by a number of artists.Devil in Disguise by Elvis Presley The King dropped this single in 1963 about a girl who uses her charm to manipulate people to get what she wants.  It peaked at number 3 on the Billboard singles chart. You're Dead by Norma Tanega  Singer-songwriter and experimental musician Norma Tanega was better known for writing songs for Dusty Springfield.  However, this song which she penned in 1966 was picked up for use in the vampire satire "What We Do In the Shadows" in 2014.Devil Went Down to Georgia by the Charlie Daniels Band  Folks, don't bet your soul against the Devil.  But if you do, make sure you're the best fiddler that there has ever been.  Charlie Daniels would peak at number 3 on the Billboard Hot 100 with this song.Runnin' with the Devil by Van Halen  The first album that Van Halen produced was a monster in itself, and this track was the first one on the album.  It is a great introduction to the band, not only for Eddie Van Halen's guitar work, but also for David Lee Roth's screams, Michael Anthony's high harmonies, and Alex Van Halen's percussion work.

Lucky Beats Good Sometimes – Chris Raspante Rewind (Ep 235)

The Unstarving Musician

Play Episode Listen Later Jul 22, 2022 41:52

This episode features musician and recording engineer Chris Raspante. It's a second look at our conversation recorded in May of 2017. It's a rewind episode, in which I dig deeper into past conversations. It's also an attempt to uncover insights that were perhaps lost in our collective note taking. This is intended to better serve you and the rest of the professional music community. Hear the very first rewind episode featuring Mike Dawson. Chris has worked with many well known Nashville artists including Travis Tritt, the Dixie Chicks and Stan Lynch among others. His successes stem from a leap of faith, putting in the work, playing the long game and a little luck. The conversation begins with how Chris got his start in Nashville as a recording engineer and session player. It's a discussion on how be became sought after engineer and player. Chis was invited in the late 90s to visit and work with friend  and professional songwriter Jon Christopher Davis. The invitation was specifically to work with Davis on song writing demos and to meet people in the Nashville scene. Chris took Davis up on the invitation and commuted between Dallas-Fort Worth and Nashville for over a year. He was almost immediately invoicing Davis' record label for recording work. Chris reflects on this time as a period as his slow but sure entry into the Nashville music business. Referrals eventually began to come his way, increasing his visibility and income. Chris also reflects on the changes that occurred during his time in Nashville and the man y changes that have happened since. He describes the landscape of music and work as very competitive. He also recalls overcoming objections that came at him for using a home studio setup. Recording in a home studio wasn't yet a thing, but it soon would be. Chris shares details of the studio setup and recording methods he was using, methods that would eventually become common in recording. Tagging along for sessions with Davis lead to meeting people in the business and opportunities to make studio contributions. People in the business started asking for Chris. He says he was doing all this by the seat of his pants, but I suspect it was more intuitive than he gives credit. Then a stroke of luck happened when Chris was invited to join Jace Everett to perform on the Tonight Show with Jay Leno. Chris had worked with Jace on the recording of a song called Bad Things, which caught the interest of the Tonight Show. That same song would also catch the interest of HBO and would eventually become the theme song for the hit series True Blood. Chris says he was the only non a-list player to work in the those album session, an opportunity he attributes to his friendship and working relationship with Jace Everett. He also says it was all a lucky fluke that the Everett was picked up by the Tonight Show and True Blood, but even more so that he and several others were taken along for the ride. As we discuss the significance of being an indie musician, Chris noted that the industry was changing dramatically every couple of years. This pace of change has obviously continued since. But it was the internet that changed everything in Chris' memory. The internet shifted  the focus from music sales to live shows and fanbase development. The album became a glorified business card for everything else artists do, a reality that's still true today. On the upside of all these changes, Chris feels that the live music industry flourished. As we discuss marketing himself, Chris states simply that networking and reputation are everything in music. He adds that if you're nice, fun, dependable and prepared, good things will happen. After re listening to our conversation, I decided that he could add humility to this list. Chris has plenty of it.  Hear my full conversation with Chris recorded in May of 2017. On this Jace Everett interview, Jace talks about finding Jesus at a young age, and then “opting out” of religion... dropping out of the music business for 5 years to raise his son and provide for his family... losing his publishing deal, his record deal and going through a miserable divorce - all at once!… Backstory to his new records, favorite song he wrote (NOT what you’re thinking), being a dad, understanding how others hear him (and don’t hear him), forgiveness, France, loads more. SUPER cool and intelligent guy  Jace Everett dropped out of Belmont University to become a full-time musician. He then moved to France, had a son, then dropped out of the music business for 5 years. Made  a bro country album that flopped - but it did have a song called “Bad Things” on it. In 2008 HBO stumbled upon “Bad Things” and made the song the theme to “True Blood.” Since then, Jace has made 6 full length albums and an EP as an independent artist. He’s toured all over the world, has dozens of sync placements in film, TV & ads... cuts with artists from Nashville, Texas, Canada, Norway, Australia and the UK. He has 2 new records , “Lost in the Flood” created with Norwegian guitarist Amund Maarud, and an Ambient record called YLEM. Jace Everett and I surely crossed paths in the 90's, a time when we both lived and played music in and around Fort Worth Texas. In fact, we both did some hanging out and performing at Bronco's Sports Bar. This is the same place at which I met Chris Raspante, and it was Chris who recommended I ask Jace to join me for an interview on the Unstarving Musician's Podcast. When I asked Jace how he and Chris knew one another, he playfully told me about playing in cover bands with Raspante, laughing about their quarrels over learning parts correctly. (band drama with a twist of OCD). A Music Career Spanning Several Albums & Collaborations Jace now calls Nashville home. It's home to his family and a music career spanning several albums and collaborations, the most recent of which is the 2017 release, Dust & Dirt, a collaboration with producer and principle co writer Dan Cohen. He's also been touring with Tonic and does a corporate band gig with members of Better Than Ezra, Tonic and Sugar Ray. Oh... he also wrote a song called Bad Things for a little HBO series called True Blood. Dust & Dirt was released to little or no fan fare, according to Jace, a statement telling of how he views today's music business. The album was for the most part made in his attic studio with the help of Dan Cohen. The self-released project was accompanied by a handful of videos, which you can find on Jace's YouTube channel. In discussing his latest album, Jace reflected on signing with EMI Nashville in 2003, and the Sony record deal that followed. He says that he was paid $32k/year in exchange for ownership of his publishing and 12 new songs per year. In 2000 and the few years that followed, he feels that it was easy to get a record deal. Although his EMI publishing deal ended a year later, he's happy to say that he's still making a living in music. EMI and Sony apparently didn't see Jace as commercially friendly country artist. He doesn't perceive himself as a commercially friendly artist, but I believe this is in fact where his artistry lies, within the music and art that he loves. Jace has a truly light heart about music and his career, making fun of the fact that some music artists have been grossly overpaid in recent decades. He suggests that the music industry was in a bubble that finally burst, but makes no bones about feeling lucky and grateful for the fact that he makes a living writing and performing songs. Jace is working on a couple of recording projects, including a new Jace Everett album. He also explores his love of words and interesting people on a podcast called Nashville Later with Jace Everett. The Vampyre (John William Polidori)The Skeleton Court, or The Vampire Mistress (Elizabeth Caroline Grey) Varney the Vampire (James Malcolm Rymer) Carmilla (Sheridan LeFanu) Drácula (Bram Stoker)Vampire of the CoastThe Vampire (Robert Vignola) Nosferatu, una sinfonía de horror (F. Spellemannsprisvinner Amund Maarud er en av landets mest kjente og erfarne gitarister. See acast.com/privacy for privacy and opt-out information.

Vê só: 01 - Far, far away - Wilco 02 - Feel alright - Steve Earle 03 - Bones - Little Big Town 04 - Half of you - Cat Power 05 - Cold ground - Rusty Truck 06 - Y'all'd think she'd be good to me - C.C.
