1993 was a transitional period. We were slowly, ass a country, shedding the action movie template of the 70's and 80's while experimenting with some headier notions on how we relate to media. Last Action Hero was, is, seeming, a product of this time. Woefully misunderstood or, at the very least, disliked and, probably, mostly unexamined, this episode is really going to try to dig in a little more. Not my favorites. However the Willems video touches upon the exact concept I was thinking about as I had recorded this episode: verisimilitude. The "joke" is that the movie world of Last Action Hero has a very loose grip on verisimilitude and logical consistency. There are some movies that do exactly that and the Jack Slater series takes that up a notch. Well, several notches, to be honest. To completely ridiculous with a wink, and a nod, and an elbow to the ribs, and a "eh? eh?" and I actually dig that. It's possible that audiences were expecting a more straight-forward movie world. That means that the movie isn't going to be enjoyable but it doesn't make it bad. Those are two different things. There are people so caught up in the verisimilitude of the media they consume that they watch 20 seasons of procedurals who rarely, if ever, deviate from their structures and concepts. They're invested in those worlds. It's quite often that those worlds are ridiculous parodies of our own "real" world--especially when technology is involved--but that doesn't make them "good" or "bad" qualitatively. We all watched The Social Network (2010) and we were not terribly concerned with the inconsistencies with our own reality but, in contrast, immersed in the verisimilitude of that movie. It felt more real than reality in some ways. And maybe that was the part of the execution that didn't land. How do you make falling into a very over-the-top and ridiculous action movie feel real? Movies where cars explode into huge fireballs in a display of exhibitionist pyrotechnics. Heroes who are impossibly wounded still performing at the level of an Olympian at their physical peak. We, as an audience (and by "we" I mean "I"), get into the action movies like that. They're internally consistent, sure, and definitely entertaining and engaging to varying degrees, but they aren't "real". But when you put this in a Picture-in-Picture frame and have something much more consistent with our "real" world (even if it's gone past realism into just pessimism with realistic physics) it can all look very silly. There is a huge contrast in the color palette (if you've seen a US vs Mexico color grading it's about that jarring) and that type of action movie wasn't always quite as bright or childish while, to a certain extent, still being marketed to young boys. Perhaps that's what Shane Black was talking about--maybe it wasn't William Goldman giving the movie "heart" but instead having a cartoon cat voiced by Danny DeVito. Maybe those frames, layered on top of each other, were too different. Perhaps the original intent was lost. Maybe I'm just a fan and forced it to work in my head but, in thinking about Kiss Kiss Bang Bang and believing that this was a dry run for that type of movie, I think that Shane Black could have pulled it off. It just would have been more like Lethal Weapon or The Last Boyscout and I don't have a concept in my head of how that would have worked. I'd love to read the fully Shane Black pass, though. Where he took the Faustian blood-soaked morality tale. The movie still has a message. Would it have kept it? Would it have doubled down on cynicism? Would Danny have actually used the gun on THE PROJECTIONIST? Perhaps that was an empowerment fantasy; the world had already challenged Danny in big ways (even the thief challenges Danny) and this was Danny rising to meet and over come it. I am probably more disappointed than you are. I also was recording outside and I just had some weird terrible noise that I had to remove. The result is an eerily silent(ish) recording that is punctuated by birds. I do not keep birds. The Last Action Hero: Official Moviebook is also incredibly cool. Tons of behind the scene content and essentially took the place of a making-of featurette (or various making-of featurette's). If you're interested you can probably find it used for a few bucks. I don't remember how much I paid for mine but it was in good condition. Not incredibly cheap but also not expensive enough to be weird about. I also wonder how influential this movie was to the Captain America: Winter Soldier glass elevator. Last Action Hero had everything going for it. An in-demand script which enticed the biggest action star in Hollywood in Arnold Schwarzenegger, a Shane Black re-write, a credible action director in John McTiernan, a huge production budget (for the time) and a huge marketing budget. This was going to be the cinematic event of 1993. Except, it wasn't. A certain dinosaur movie went ahead and became that instead. So, what went wrong for Last Action Hero? Quite a lot, as it happens. But it didn't fail for want of trying. Everyone on board loved this movie. So much so it was overhyped to the press, and expected to be a huge summer blockbuster. Naturally. when it wasn't, it was disappointment all round. There is, however, a lot to enjoy in Last Action Hero. That's if you can find it in the uneven tone and numerous plot holes. And because of it, I've been unable to film a single thing. I firmly believe in practicing social distancing, and the last thing I want is to selfishly summon all my actors and risk their health because I want to film. Thus, I've once again found myself thinking outside the box in an effort to indulge my creativity.   I don't exactly know what inspired me to make a radio play. All I know is that I just kinda wanted to do it. I've had friends and actors record lines remotely many times over the years. And unless I told you, you'd probably never know. So I used that same process and mindset to approach doing a radio play.   The first step was selecting a script that I knew I'd never get to film, especially at my current level. So I went through my DEAD SCRIPTS folder on my computer. It is pretty much comprised of scripts, stories and ideas that I either will never be able to make, outdated versions of scripts, or stories lost interest in doing.   After a short skim, I landed on Jack Slater V. I love Last Action Hero. It truly inspired me as a kid. I saw it in theaters, had the action figures, the car and the SNES game. I was a true fan. And around 2013 or so, I had the idea of continuing the unseen Jack Slater story. I really loved the idea of lampooning action films, ala the Simpsons' McBane, and I felt that Jack Slater is right in line with that over the top humor.   So I ended up writing a treatment for a full length Jack Slater movie. Of course, complete with insane action, endless ammunition, convenient ex machinas, and an over the top story that would make any action fan smile. But of course, it's impossible to make. The budget for a legit Jack Slater movie would be over 100m, and I don't even have the rights. En este capítulo, en el que participaron Harvey Pearce y Jack Slater, nuestros investigadores se dedicaron a ahondar en las pistas en torno al caso del asesinato de Pete Manusco, del cual fueron testigos. Para ello, hicieron una revisión en los periódicos de la ciudad, visitaron a la policía local, donde obtuvieron interesantes pistas para el caso (al precio de verse involucrados como visitantes "habituales" de los speakeasy de la ciudad) y finalmente asistieron al funeral de Frederick Lincoln Fayette, el cuñado de Mitch Wester, líder de la banda "Cinco Estrellas". Rock music, guns, explosions and Arnold motherfucking Schwarzenegger is all you need to know about this movie people!! That's right, it was Wade's pick of the week and he went with 1993s Last Action Hero. The movie stars Arnold as Jack Slater who is an action hero on screen and idolized by Danny Madigan played by Austin O'Brien. After Danny is given a magical ticket that opens a portal between the real world and the fictional movie world that's where things get nuts. When the antagonist Benedict (Charles Dance) realizes what this ticket can do he uses it for evil of course by using the power to bring movie villains into the real world and Jack with Dannys help must stop him.  This movie is high up over the top it could reside on Mt. Everest...it's an action movie, inside an action movie!! What more can you want!? The movie is so wildly creative and pokes fun at itself throughout the whole thing, then not to mention the cast, numerous cameos and the awesome soundtrack. Arnold even went to AC/DC and asked them to come up with a song and we got 'Big Gun' Have a listen to this episode if you will as we gush over this movie and appreciate it for everything it's worth and then some.

Yo de pequeño tenía una entrada mágica que a mi me la dio Juan Tamariz, a él se la dio el cazafantasmas Tristranbreiker y este se la dio... bueno este realmente la encontró dentro de una caja de galletas TostaRica. Y bueno lo que se dice mágica... era plateada y llevaba purpurina... pero con ella vivi muchas aventuras... eh... que sí, que es trola. Ni entrada ni aventuras mágicas ni nada de nada... pero como hubiera molado... Jodido Danny Madigan que suerte tuvo. Nunca he llegado a entender por que en la época esta película paso tan desapercibida y como además los comentarios hacia ella, incluso de mis compañeros del colegio, eran negativos, cuando yo que la había visto en Canal + en casi todos los pases la consideraba un peliculón de cinco estrellas. Tiros, chistes malos, archivillanos épicos, chicas guapas, magia, fantasía, más tiros, explosiones, Schwarzenegger, musicón... ¿En que cojones pensaban los críticos esos de mierda y los mendrugos de mis amigos? Como la peli mola tanto hemos conseguido que vuelva hasta los estudios de Carne de Videoclub, y esta vez para quedarse, el señor Isaac Gómez y sus ingentes conocimientos rodeados de sus todopoderosos tacos, esos que Jack Slater jamás podría decir en pantalla.
