In this episode, Megan and Frank continue their discussion of myths and mythology. Join them as they further explore different approaches to interpreting and understanding myth. How have creation myths differed across cultures? Should myth be regarded as an allegory? Is the point of myth to justify society's norms? Is myth a tool for exploring the subconscious aspects of our minds? And do we have any use for myth in the modern world? Thinkers discussed include Joseph Cambell, Carl Jung, Karl Popper, and Mary Midgley.-----------------------Hosts' Websites:Megan J Fritts (google.com)Frank J. Dr. Michael Cowl Gordon is a family physician and addiction specialist, who practiced in Wisconsin and Georgia for over 50 years, until he retired last year.  He completed medical training at the University of Illinois College of Medicine in 1967 As well as he received his board certification in Addiction Medicine in 1986. Inspired by his own recovery journey, as well as those of his patients, Dr. Gordon has dedicated much of his career to understanding and treating addiction. He is author of  "The 12-Step Pathway: A Heroic Journey of Recovery”, which is a collection of individual stories,  demonstrating how people struggling with addiction can embark on a transformative journey of recovery using the 12 step program, such as Alcoholics Anonymous. By utilizing the metaphor of the hero's journey, as conceptualized by Joseph Cambell, he convincingly explains why the 12-step program holds the key to overcoming addiction. Although the 12 step program is almost 90 years old, it still offers a journey of recovery that is motivating and inspiring, for all addictions, including the newer food addiction. “The cave you fear to enter holds the treasure you seek.”—Joseph Cambell (1904 – 1987)Every journey is a tapestry of experiences, and Urmi Hossain's story weaves a vibrant pattern of culture, identity and self-discovery that stretches across continents. Our conversation peels back the layers of Urmi's life, from her early years in Italy to her adventures in Canada, illuminating the bittersweet nature of frequent relocations. She recounts the challenges of being a Bengali Muslim in Catholic schools and the complexity of being a third culture kid caught between worlds. With each move, Urmi faced the daunting task of bidding farewell to friendships and adapting to new surroundings, yet she found a way to embrace the excitement of exploration and the richness of Canada's multicultural milieu.Digging deeper into the heart of immigration, Urmi reflects on her parents' brave leap from Bangladesh to Italy—perhaps influenced by Italy's permissive Martelli's law—a journey made not for work but for the promise of a better future. This chapter of Urmi's life paints an intriguing portrait of identity struggles, as she feels more anchored to her Italian and Bengali roots than to her Canadian citizenship. Urmi likens the move to Canada to Joseph Campbell's “cave you fear to enter,” which holds “the treasure you seek.”  The analogy captures both the risks and the rewards of diving into the unknown, a country where even the language, Quebecois, created a formidable hurdle to acceptance. Her adventurous spirit is a testament to the power of taking chances and the profound impact such decisions have on shaping one's life narrative. In the final stretch of our intimate dialogue, we traverse the landscape of Urmi's personal growth and the resilience she has honed over the years. Becoming a Toastmaster has helped her in pursuing her ultimate quest for giving a coveted TED Talk. She is a dedicated mentor to other women and girls through her volunteer work in Canada, and Urmi shares how her commitment to fitness, particularly boxing, has fortified her mental and physical strength. As we wrap up, we contemplate the paradoxical relationship between joy and sadness and the adaptability that is carved from life's hurdles. Urmi's journey from Palermo to Montreal exemplifies the transformative process that many of us navigate, reminding us that the essence of our shared human experience is as unpredictable as it is beautiful. “LEAVE ME ALONE!”Due to recent events in the film industry, Retro Grade Podcast decided to take a different approach to the movies we will cover on the podcast until the strikes are over in support of the unions. We will be covering films that are not under the companies being struck, starting with one of the greatest anime films of all time: Akira, directed by Katsuhiro Otomo, from 1988. We talk about how this very strange, at times confusing, violent and beautiful film fits in the conversation of nuclear power in the minds of film goers today with Oppenheimer's success at the summer box office. While Nolan's film tells the story from the perspective of the man that invented the bomb, what about the perspective of the people that survived it? Through the cyberpunk, alternative future of a post-WW3 Neo-Tokyo, perhaps Otomo offers that through Akira. This is the third animated film we've talked about on the podcast, and the second anime film after our Totoro episode. Fun fact, Totoro also came out the same year Akira did! We talk about how this film uses extreme detail, slow motion, violence, sound, and silence to give us a unique, enthralling experience. Starting with a high octane motorcycle chase, and ending with one of the most disturbing images we've seen since our Hellraiser episode. We talk about what makes Kaneda a different kind of protagonist. One that might not fit the hero archetype laid out by Joseph Cambell. We talk about the ensemble cast of characters whose individual actions (and even their names) are unknown to each other, despite them having so much screen time. Does Akira even have a main character? We don't really agree on this one, but maybe the underlying issue is part of Akira's DNA.What is Akira's DNA? Well, the film that was released in 1988, was based on the manga, (also created by Katsuhiro Otomo) that started in 1982 and ended in 1990. Yes, you read that right, the film came out while the manga was still in production. Although the film is a compromised version of the manga, Otomo was the one in charge of both. He chose what to change for the film, and in that process, likely changed how the manga would then end. We give a few examples on what the differences are, and maybe that might help us all understand what the film was trying to say.Interpretation of film is a fun, and enriching exercise that we love here on Retro Grade Podcast. Given the setting of a post-war Japanese government rebuilding a city that has been destroyed by an atomic force, a militaristic police force violently suppresses protesters while Bosozoku gangs of disgruntled teenagers battle on motorcycles.. It's safe to say this film is sort of about the reconstruction era of Japan post World War 2. However, there may be other things going on, and only looking at it through the lens of ‘post war trauma,' might be selling Akira short. We go through some think pieces on what Akira was about, and then provide our own analysis of what it means to us! Music is from Triune Digital and audio clips pulled from movies we will be reviewing in other episodes.Artwork by @jannelle_o

Stages of Initiation/GrowthThis podcast is a reminder of the stages one grows through and into as we evolve here in this lifetime. These stages can typically be times of tension, stagnation, suffering….well, not fun times. Ultimately to look at the end and how Death is perceived by you. We have had much death around us with this pandemic and what is your take on what death means to you? This information comes from the works of Joseph Cambell and C. Jung in the book entitled “Reflections on the Art of Living, A Joseph Cambell Companion” by Diane K. Osbon. I enjoy this book and the little section on initiations because it allows us to see where we can reflect and realize our own process of growing. I share this information as an opportunity to find the love within and move into a place of peace with ourself and others.  If there is anyone experiencing chaos in their life and could use some validation to what they may already know within themself then this is a perfect little listen. Zak Hilditch is an Australian writer and director primarily known for the Netflix hits, Rattlesnake, and 1922, based on the Stephen King novella. Zak's earlier films include Transmission and These Final Hours. Zak is a very exciting director and has a very inspiring origin story, along with some great advice for pitching producers. I took a lot of notes from this conversation and hope you enjoy it. Here are some key takeaways from this conversation with Zak Hilditch. Make your feature 8 shorts in rapid succession. Hopefully, by now, you've read Save the Cat by Blake Snyder, Story by Robert Mckee, and maybe even the Hero with a Thousand Faces by Joseph Cambell. They all feature multiple formulas, etc., but one of the simplest, arguably most elegant ways to approach a feature screenplay is to make 8 12-minute shorts. For a movie to have compelling beats, every twelve minutes should feature a mini-story with a beginning, middle, and end to keep things consistently interesting. Hitchcock was known for doing this; for another example, pay close attention to The Others. Yes, this is formulaic, and yes, it's important to be original, but it's an interesting concept to observe because sometimes you need to know the rules to break them. Prep for your water bottle tour. First of all, a water bottle tour is when typically, your agent or manager sets you up with back to back to back meetings with producers so you can pitch them on yourself and your projects all at once. Each office along the way usually gives you a bottle of water while you wait hence the name, water bottle tour. If you get the chance to do a water bottle tour, make sure to have a full stable of ideas and concepts to pitch everyone you meet. Sometimes these meetings are in the context of a specific project, but this is not the way to approach water bottle tours. Yes, arrive prepared to pitch that project, but know that they may pass on it, in which case, you need backup concepts in your arsenal to tell them about. Having multiple projects enables you to pitch your sensibility as a director because there's always a chance they like you and your taste, but that one project isn't right for them. Having multiple projects makes you way more likely to get a deal since not only do they have more options to choose from as producers, but you get to showcase your sensibility in a much deeper way so that when a project comes across their desk that you're right for, they're more likely to think about you. On water bottle tours, producers meet so many people that they cannot remember most of them, so you need to leave a strong impression of yourself, your work, what you're capable of, and the kind of stuff you want to do. Keep multiple irons in the fire. This point is a natural extension to the previous one and further speaks to the importance of developing multiple projects at once. This is a paradox to the importance of focus, but the name of the game is being versatile and multi-faceted and having multiple things you're pitching at all times because you never know which one will hit or when. Zack spent years pitching one of his projects with little to no interest; meanwhile, his concept for Rattlesnake was instantly greenlit by Netflix. Hollywood is a fickle beast this way, without rhyme, reason, or logic sometimes, and it can drive you insane if you're not prepared for it. The film industry is a current, and rather than fight it; you need to learn to surf it. So get those screenplays ready, and I'll see you in Hollywood! ----- Produced by Simpler Media

Stories have the power to transform our lives in unexpected ways. My guest today, Jonathan Altfeld, is a dear friend and an absolutely fascinating person with one of the best jobs on the planet: he focuses on the language of story in his work. He has a decades-long fascination with the power of story to inspire us, help us wire around problems, and create new options for ourselves. That's one of the biggest outcomes that he gets with his students--getting them unstuck and creating new possibilities for people. In this episode, Jonathan and I dig into many powerful aspects of story  including why human beings are experts at getting in our own way, how Neuro-Linguistic Programming (NLP) can influence your storytelling, what the impact of hypnotherapist Milton Erickson is on the field as a storyteller and so much more. Jonathan also unpacks his pattern matching process (You won't want to miss this!) with plenty of stories to highlight throughout. What you will learn in this episode: How stories can bypass our conscious resistance Why you should always start with the outcome in mind How to implement active language in your communication Who is Jonathan? Jonathan Altfeld is a Neuro-Linguistic Programming trainer who has had a fascination for how stories connect and move us to grow and change for 30 years. He's explored the works of Carl Jung, Joseph Cambell, hypnotherapist Milton Erickson and other NLP experts, mythology, and other literary influences in the process. He's had two career paths: one in artificial intelligence before starting to train and coach people globally in 1997. These days, he serves as a communication skills expert's expert, a business and personal coach, and a consultant and is the author of several unique professional and personal development programs. Jonathan's focus mostly lies on the practical business use of NLP for more effective and influential training, coaching, scriptwriting, copywriting, and email crafting, along with his process for mapping expertise for knowledge mining and transfer. He remains deeply passionate about and fascinated with creating teaching stories and metaphors that help people, consciously and subconsciously, achieve extraordinary results that help evolve them to their next level. "Businesses are fairly unhappy places to be at the moment. People, young people, bright people who've done everything right, who've got a good education they've paid through the noses for, who've worked hard and they've got into these elite organisations and are saying "Is this it? Is this what I want to do?" They look 30 years ahead 40 years ahead to the bosses and say, "Is that what I want to be?"" Gib Bulloch.   Gib talks about how he began to question his 'lovely yuppie lifestyle' in London, in the late 90s, having done very "well" for himself. Is this all there is to life? A committed non-conformist and a catalyst for change he founded Accenture Development Partners, described by some as a guerilla movement within Accenture, where today 50,000 staff are on a waiting list to work for a 50% pay-cut. We talk about leadership, corporate immune systems, seizing opportunities and entrepreneurship. Being a corporate insurgent isn't all plain sailing and Gib openly discusses his stay in a psychiatric unit and he explains that one of the main drivers for writing his book was to stand up and be counted about mental health and to shift the debate from the mental health of individuals to the mental health of the organisation and of the system causing these problems.   Gib Bulloch is a speaker, writer and facilitator with a unique perspective on the relationship between business, society and the self. He spent 25 years at three of the world's largest companies – BP, Mars and Accenture. During his time at Accenture, he set up the award-winning Accenture Development Partners, a corporate social enterprise that provides development sector organisations access to Accenture's top people, knowledge and assets on a not-for-profit basis.  With an insider's view of the corporate engine and an awareness of the impact that business can have on the individual, he is passionate about creating a more mindful, empowered and balanced approach to the world of work.    Connect with Gib: On LinkedIn Website: https://gibbulloch.com/bullog/  Craigberoch: https://craigberoch.org/    Resources: The Intrapreneur: Confessions of a Corporate Insurgent, Gib Bulloch  Synchronicity: The Inner Path of Leadership, Joseph Jaworski The Hero's Journey, Joseph Cambell

Here are some of the main takeaways from our visit with Benton Crane, CEO of Provo, Utah-based Harmon Brothers   The most effective creative collaboration starts in a vacuum. Benton said that, in every Harmon Brothers project, four writers are tasked with writing four separate initial scripts. No exchanging notes, no bouncing ideas off one another. Then, the client is called in for a reading of each script. Until this moment, no higher-up in the agency has seen or weighed in on any of them. This may seem like a huge risk, but the clients love it because it allows them to get involved in the raw creative process, resulting in a superior final product that is closer to what they want.   Test EVERYTHING. Every Harmon Brothers campaign undergoes an insane amount of testing - for instance, in the conceptualization stage, the initial script is read to 10 semi-disinterested people. During the reading, their facial reactions are captured on video. A scorecard referred to as a "laugh graph" correlates the reactions to each part of the script in order to gauge whether it's a hit or not.   Learn from Pixar and Create a Brain Trust. Harmon Brothers operates a Pixar-style creative brain trust that exists in part to identify weaknesses in the scripts, storyboards, and shoots. Benton said this group never overrides the agency’s quintet of creative directors but do offer constructive feedback for them to ponder and utilize (or not). This concept was borrowed from Pixar who operates similarly. You can learn more by reading Ed Catmull’s pinnacle book, CREATIVITY INC.    Learn REAL Storytelling Structures like Joseph Cambell’s Hero’s Journey. Benton spoke about how humans are hard-wired to pay lasting attention to stories featuring a protagonist on a quest. He said the hero’s journey formula is a solid-gold framework to approach ad-writing with because no other archetypal structure makes as deep of an emotional connection with audiences. However in Harmon Brothers ads, the viewers are positioned as the hero INSTEAD of the product. Instead, the product is the ‘sword that slays the dragon’ or the bridge stands between them and the prize—typically a happier life.   Thank you for listening to Damn Good Brands, don’t forget to subscribe on Apple Podcasts, Spotify or wherever you listen!   Key Links Benton Crane LinkedIn page Harmon Brothers website From Poop To Gold: The Marketing Magic of Harmon Brothers by Chris Jones Creativity, Inc. by Ed Catmull Building a StoryBrand: Clarify Your Message So Customers Will Listen by Donald Miller Squatty Potty ad Poo-Pourri ad ----- Produced by Simpler Media

August 26th, 2019 Netflix released Dave Chappelle’s fifth, and most controversial, comedy special on their platform. In this conversation we discuss the formula behind Dave Chappelle’s storytelling ability, why we need to protect comedians, and the effects of cancel culture. [4:30] - Generational comedians - Gen X had George Carlin, we have Dave Chappelle/Ellen?? Gen Z has Eric Andre?[6:30] - Do all good stories follow Joseph Cambell’s hero’s journey? (That link is a 3min explainer video.)[8:00] - What is the difference between story and narrative? (Article that explains how all stories are narrative but not all narratives are stories and how this can impact your career)[11:30] - Joel explains why his favourite comedians are Steven Colbert & Jon Stewart.[14:00] - Good storytellers don’t teach, they connect. [16:00] - Why does Joe Rogan have an audience of milennial men while 75% of women listen to True Crime podcasts? [20:30] - Robert Cialdini’s idea of pre-suasion. [22:00] - Broc takes a stab at the And, But, Therefore storytelling framework. [27:30] - Why we should protect comedians in our culture.[30:30] - Dave Chappelle predicts abortion laws?[38:15] - What happens in a populist society where opinions are suppressed? [40:30] - An argument for how Chappelle crossed the line by punching down. [44:00] - Other Mentions: 🎥 - Dave Chappelle’s Stove Top Stuffing Story from Equanimity and the Bird Revolution mapped to Dan Harmon’s key plot points. 🐦 - Cancel Culture 📚 - The Hero With a Thousand Faces by Joseph Campbell📚 - Thinking Fast & Slow by Daniel Kahneman📚 - Antifragile by Nassim TalebTLDL1. Dave Chappelle is great at what he does not because he’s a good storyteller but because he’s a master at constructing narrative. This technique is so effective it can even swing elections. 2. Our current version of “cancel culture” is basically scapegoating and isn’t good for either side. #metoo movement channels outrage and cancels MAGA individual supporters, they fight back and as an example make abortion illegal in Georgia and Alabama. (**massive over-simplification**)3. Pushing for homogenous speech is dangerous. We need to protect our comedians and give them the cloud cover to say what most people can’t. As precedent, King’s once employed Jester’s partially to shine a light on the foolishness of the Monarch. DISCLAIMERJoel Shackleton works for Gold Investment Management. Yet lately the most popular advice seems to be, "Follow your passion is terrible advice", or, "Just work hard and get good at something and you'll learn to love it". Who's right? TK joins me to discuss in what ways both sides are right and wrong. I think both pick the wrong thing - passion - to focus on.
