Social media undermines democracy. Small businesses are more innovative than big ones. Corporate profits are at all-time highs. America's secret weapon is laissez-faire capitalism. These are widely held beliefs, but are they true? Our guest today argues that these statements aren't just wrong, but that they're holding America back—discouraging talented people from entering the technology field and making companies too cautious and wary of regulators. Is America losing its faith in innovation? If so, what can companies and governments do to turn the tide? Has America's “free-market” really been as free as we think, and what can policymakers learn from Alexander Hamilton when it comes to industrial policy?Evan is joined by Robert Atkinson, Founder and President of the Information Technology and Innovation Foundation, an independent, nonpartisan research and educational institute, often recognized as the world's leading think tank on science and tech policy. He is also the co-author of the Technology Fears and Scapegoats: 40 Myths about Privacy, Jobs, AI, and Today's Innovation Economy. Read his article on Hamiltonian industrial policy here.

The Postal Service is making infrastructure the focus of its upcoming 10-year strategy. Postmaster General Louis DeJoy says the agency will invest in package-sorting equipment and a new fleet of delivery trucks. This comes as USPS struggles with service delays, and a tough long-term financial outlook. For more on where the Postal Service can get the most out of its infrastructure investments, Federal News Network’s Jory Heckman spoke with the author of a recent study on this issue, Information Technology and Innovation Foundation President Robert Atkinson.
Robert David Atkinson is an economist and president of the Information Technology and Innovation Foundation, a public policy think tank based in Washington, D.C., that promotes policies based on innovation economics. Rob presented to the Tech Titans board of directors in late January 2021. Rob spoke about privacy concerns, artificial intelligence (and minority biases), and what it means when it says that President Biden signed executive orders. Note that the beginning of the presentation was not recorded.
This week's episode begins with the advice New Zealand’s Trade Minister Damien O’Connor attempted to offer Australia on how to manage bilateral relations with China. Was it helpful, and regardless does Australia have something to learn from the way New Zealand conducts its diplomacy and foreign policy? And what explains the starkly different trajectories of the bilateral relationships Canberra and Wellington have with Beijing? The military has taken power in Myanmar—again—and Allan offers a sorrowful perspective on the state of the country to which he was first posted as a young diplomat. Meanwhile, Darren wonders what the Biden administration will do, and wonders whether there is merit in the US looking to support some key Southeast Asian governments in their response, rather than necessarily attempting to lead at a time when their own democratic credentials are diminished. Is "ASEAN solidarity" still in the interests of all of its member states? Regular podcast listeners will know how much stock Allan and Darren place on speeches, and this week they focus on the speech given by Chinese President Xi Jinping to the World Economic Forum. How is reading and analysing a speech from a Chinese leader different to that of an Australian PM or US president? What were the notable takeaways from this speech, and who was its primary audience? Finally, Australia has a brand new Comprehensive Strategic Partnership with Malaysia. Perhaps an example of “fresh thinking” in Australian foreign policy? We thank AIIA intern Mitchell McIntosh for his help with research and audio editing and Rory Stenning for composing our theme music. Then we talk about the impact that small businesses really have in developing countries. We tackle income inequality, government subsidies for new businesses, and how regulations are weaker for small businesses. What do we mean when we speak of Oneness? What is duality? What is it like to live in Oneness? Is it possible that we are actually in a unique period of spiritual transformation that, through divisiveness leads us to unity, even to Oneness? These are some of the questions we will answer today as we speak to Robert Atkinson, PhD, and author of the book, The Story of Our Time: From Duality to Interconnectedness to Oneness. We speak of being One with all, as if we truly understand for whom the bell tolls, but do we understand the depth and gravity of living as One with all, including the divine? What do you think about the following statements? Small businesses are overwhelmingly responsible for job creation, innovation and American prosperity. Small businesses are more productive than big companies. And small business owners are the core of democracy in America. Yet Washington, controlled by big business and engaged in “crony capitalism,” systemically discriminates against small business. We all know this is true, right? Well, no, these things are not true. Or at least, mostly not true. Joining me to explain why is Robert Atkinson, author of “Big is Beautiful: Debunking the Myth of Small Business” and Ron Nicol who led Boston Consulting Group's Americas Practice and was global leader of its Media, Technology and Communications Group. Rob, founder and president of the Information Technology and Innovation Foundation, is one of the country's foremost thinkers on innovation economics. Small is beautiful, right? Isn't that what we've all been taught? From Jeffersonian politics to the hallowed family farm, from craft breweries to tech start ups in the garage. Small business is the engine and the soul and the driver of the American system. That's the dominant narrative. And according to Robert Atkinson and Michael Lind, it is really wrong. In their new book, Big is Beautiful: Debunking the Myth of Small Business (MIT Press, 2018), the authors review the empirical evidence and conclude that large businesses create more, generate more intellectual capital, pay better, pollute less, are more diverse, and score higher on pretty much any measure of economic or employee well-being that you can come up with. It is a shocking conclusion, but one that everyone involved in the regulation of business should be aware of. (And, by the way and probably a surprise to many, small business has had its thumb on the regulatory scales for much of the republic's history.) Big is Beautiful goes against--way against--the prevailing narrative about business in this country. Daniel Peris is Senior Vice President at Federated Investors in Pittsburgh. “Small business is the basis of American prosperity.” “Small businesses are overwhelmingly responsible for job creation and innovation.” “Small business owners are the basis for democracy in America.” All these statements are wrong, argues Robert Atkinson, president of the Information Technology and Innovation Foundation. Dr. Jeanette welcomes Robert Atkinson, author of The Story of Our Time: From Duality to Interconnectedness to Oneness, shares progression over time of how humanity has evolved. Bob shares how we exist within cycles and also have linear progression in growth. As we complete each linear segment, we do so with the ability of our consciousness at the moment in time. The cyclic progression is the culmination of many linear segments that fall into place for our transformation. We move to our original state of Oneness by accessing the potential of possible perceptions at each moment. Are we limited to 'understand and comprehend' and that is the factor that allows us to grow and understand all around us in the universe, yes? Consciousness of duality leads to a separation of the life we had been living and now we are on the fast track to Oneness. Dr. Jeanette welcomes Robert Atkinson, author of Mystic Journey: Getting to the heart of your soul's story, to share our present day evolution. Robert asks 'What is the soul's transformation and evolution'? The Mystic journey is remembering we all come from the same creator. Can we remember who we are and what our soul has to say? The process is to unity with the creator and union to recognizing the consciousness and oneness of humanity. Why are we here, what are we doing and are we here to repeat and play out history or to bring forth a new world? How is our collective soul journey moving forward; are we in the dark night of the soul or the dark night of the collective? This episode of The Sound of Economics focuses on artificial intelligence (AI). The important technological advancements in computer science and information systems move us towards the artificial intelligence era with the creation of computing machines and systems that perform operations analogous to human learning and decision making. How will our lives change in this new era? Robert Atkinson shares his opinion on how AI will develop in the future and what we can expect from this development. Anna Byhovskaya addresses the widespread perception that AI will replace jobs as we know them. Is that a myth to be debunked or something we should be ready for? Merja Kyllönen discusses the role of legislators in the process of AI advancement, and Georgios Petropoulos emphasises other important issues to consider, such as the role of companies. Our guests go on to discuss the specific ways in which AI might change the nature of work. They also debate whether it will have an impact on politics and the political process. Finally, they discuss what they think will be the biggest change resulting from AI development. SPEAKERS Robert Atkinson, President, Information Technology and Innovation Foundation Anna Byhovskaya, Policy & Communications Advisor, TUAC/ OECD Merja Kyllönen, Member of the European Parliament Georgios Petropoulos, Research Fellow, Bruegel CREDITS Produced and presented by Giuseppe Porcaro

With the advent of new technology, there is often a wave of fear which Rob Atkinson calls the "Privacy Panic Cycle." In the 1960s, some people were afraid of transistor radios, thinking that small radios could be slipped into their drinks so that others could listen to their conversations. While this may seem laughable, technology continues to evolve and there is a growing struggle between those who advocate for all technological advances while others assert that "private" life becomes increasingly less private as innovations become integrated into our lives. Where do we draw the line? Should we even draw a line? Check in today for a discussion of these issues with Rob Atkinson of The Information Technology & Innovation Foundation. Robert Atkinson is the founder and president of the Information Technology and Innovation Foundation (ITIF) and is also author of Innovation Economics: The Race for Global Advantage (Yale, 2012) and The Past and Future of America’s Economy: Long Waves of Innovation That Power Cycles of Growth (Edward Elgar, 2005). Before coming to ITIF, Dr. Atkinson was Vice President of the Progressive Policy Institute. The Information Technology and Innovation Foundation is a non-profit, non-partisan think tank whose mission is to formulate and promote public policies to advance technological innovation and productivity internationally, in Washington, and in the states.
