Texas State University's Keisuke Ikehata, Ph.D., an assistant professor in the Ingram School of Engineering, joins the Big Ideas TXST podcast to discuss an innovative pilot program to convert wastewater into purified drinking water. Texas' rapid population growth combined with ongoing drought conditions has led to water shortages across the state. In the face of this challenge, Ikehata sees an opportunity for the public to embrace the idea of using treated wastewater for daily needs, a process referred to as potable water reuse. Ikehata and his students have partnered with the San Marcos Wastewater Treatment Plant on an advanced water purification system that turns more than 5 million gallons of wastewater into clean, environmentally safe water on a daily basis. An expert in advanced water and wastewater treatment and sustainable water resources management, including water reuse, desalination and stormwater management, Ikehata earned his doctorate in civil and environmental engineering from the University of Alberta, Edmonton, Canada. In July 2019, he joined TXST as one of four founding members of the civil engineering program. Prior to joining TXST, Ikehata worked for more than eight years as a technical specialist/R&D manager at a water resources engineering firm in Orange County, Calif. and eight years in academia in California, Alberta and Kansas. This month's podcast features one of my favorite builders, Keisuke Nishi of Keystone Guitars. Keisuke went to luthier school in both Japan and the US, worked for First Act, and then did an apprenticeship with acclaimed guitarmaker Mario Beauregard. For episode 78 of the podcast, Keisuke compares his educational experiences and discusses how he was eventually able to start his own shop in Tokyo. He also shares his thoughts on design, the luthier scene in Japan, and much more. Links: https://www.keystone-si.com/ https://ogawainlay.com/ Love Luthier on Luthier? David hosts this week, continuing his “Violence Hell!” series of manga picks for season 4 with BAKI, by Keisuke Itagaki! Will this hyper-violent treatise on masculinity hit with the crew, or is it going to be “Too Las Vegas” for some? What does ANY of that mean!? Listen to find out!
Keisuke Goda has set the standard for sorting cells based on images. As a professor at the University of Tokyo leading a lab of 53 scientists, Keisuke is developing new tools to explore biology at different scales. During grad school at MIT, he studied gravitational waves in the LIGO group where a collaboration at Caltech led to an opportunity to move into biology at UCLA. By bringing LIGO technology, and a physicist's perspective, to cytometry, Keisuke has been able to pioneer the field of sorting cells by an image. In our conversation, we touch upon his career starting in Japan, 15 years in the US, and finally back to Japan. Starting around 2007, Keisuke was working on high-speed imaging then moved toward cell sorting after trying to figure out how to integrate imaging into FACS. In short, previous sorting methods don't capture high-resolution spatial features and by adding morphological and other spatial features, we might be able to discover and isolate cells we haven't studied before. Molecular biology has a long history of physicists transforming biology - Keisuke is no different. He made a lot of friends and led a large team of collaborators bringing various fields together from engineering and machine learning to biology. The challenges and opportunities were in managing an interdisciplinary project that had technical roadblocks along the way but more importantly cultural ones. Just as much as Keisuke is world-class at translating different scales of biology, he is equally skilled at translating the languages of various scientific fields. In 2018, the Goda Lab published research in Cell that established image-activated cell sorting (IACS). This led to the creation of an ecosystem of various groups around the world improving the technology and new applications. And the current state-of-the-art is at sorting thousands of cells per second with IACS with around a 10 ms lag time. Throughput can be increased with tradeoffs in purity and imaging success rate with current projects around developing better neural networks and imaging processing methods to increase the number of cells per second that can be sorted. Keisuke pursues data-driven research and treats biology as an open field when new techniques and ideas can be mixed-and-matched together. His lab is pursuing new projects related to merging cytometry, microscopy, and sequencing. Essentially, 3 different languages with each at a different scale of time and space. A key lesson from Keisuke's career is making friends to bring different expertises in order to solve important problems. With his view of a long-term opportunity to integrate biological data at different scales, Keisuke and his group have been really good at making friends.

Graphic Facilitation This isn't just about recording outcomes on flipcharts. And it isn't just about being fantastic at graphics. Keisuke combines his facilitation and graphics skills to reflect, in the moment where the conversation is going, what is happening and what is being said along with the oh so important context of what isn't being said. The emotions, the missed connections, the interesting perspectives that a facilitator can pick up on, but then beautifully represented on the board with Keisuke's graphics. And this isn't just for a take away at the end of the session but is a powerful mirror as the conversation progresses and as Keisuke says, he can add spice to the graphics to prompt discussion and reflection from a different perspective. In person facilitation, coaching and visual workshops with 100's of participants, this is such a fabulous method to generate the stickiest of learning! https://www.keisuketaketani.com https://www.linkedin.com/in/taketani

On this episode of VIEW to the U we highlight Professor Keisuke Fukuda, also known as K, who talks about his research related to visual working memory and how memory guides behaviour. But along with that, K also talks about other studies his lab is taking on such as why is it so hard to forget things we would rather not remember and how memory distortion can come into play when we are processing information. K also talks about some of the daily inspirations that motivate his research. A full transcript of the interview is available at https://uoft.me/6FU. K, Josh, and I were postdocs together in Jeff Schall's and Geoff Woodman's labs. K and Josh had backgrounds in psychology and were getting their first experience with neurophysiology, recording single neuron activity in awake behaving primates. This episode is a discussion surrounding their reflections and perspectives on neuroscience and psychology, given their backgrounds and experience (we reference episode 84 with György Buzsáki and David Poeppel). We also talk about their divergent paths - K stayed in academia and runs an EEG lab studying human decision-making and memory, and Josh left academia and has worked for three different pharmaceutical and tech companies. So this episode doesn't get into gritty science questions, but is a light discussion about the state of neuroscience, psychology, and AI, and reflections on academia and industry, life in lab, and plenty more.
This week, the A's give Yuri all their acclaim while kicking Keisuke to the curb. Annah explains some of the IXA Armor's inner workings while Adam gets educated a bit more on the Kamen Rider franchise as a whole. After an off-week, the A's return to behold the glory of IXA's debut! Adam tries (not terribly hard) to relate to Keisuke while Annah discovers a strange fascination with knives. They both mourn the rise and fall of the Frog Fangire and try their hands at a new catch phrase. This week, the A's dive smack dab into the middle of the morality spectrum as they meet a Fangire with sympathetic qualities while learning that a character who was previously thought to be a hero isn't actually all that squeaky clean. Adam speculates on the lifecycle of the Dorans while Annah dunks on Keisuke. In 2019, the Saudi Arabia oil facility attacks raised huge questions about energy security - with the incident wiping out nearly half of the country's estimated output and 5% of global production. Keisuke Sadamori, Director of Energy and Security Markets at the International Energy Agency (IEA), explores energy security in the age of renewables. He explains that incidents of extreme weather are destabilizing renewable energy systems and infrastructures around the world, and this will likely become a major energy security concern in future. In addition, Keisuke also examines how digital technologies may be opening the door to a new mix of cyber threats, which could impact on the renewable energy industry and the rate of its adoption.

How a Bundle of Straw Became a Fortune is the Japanese take on the “exchange” type of story, which we could also call the “pay it forward” type. In it, an individual does a good deed by giving away something, and receives a gift in return; this gift is then given to someone else who needs it, and the hero then receives another “white elephant” in return, which is then passed on to someone else, etc. Finally, our hero receives his ultimate good fortune. We are currently performing a story of this type, The Boy Who Wanted a Drum (India) in our live stage production. It seems like a rather appropriate choice for a holiday season in which so many people give gifts and think about those less fortunate. By the way, we named the character in our version of the story Keisuke, after a young man we know in Japan. And you may catch the subtle reference to the classic Japanese animated film, Kiki's Delivery Service. We come to you from Simpsonville, SC, near Greenville. We are taking a bit of a holiday break between our stage performances and our offstage explorations that provide the fodder for our Act!vated Adventures videos. Have a peek at them! Happy holidays and happy listening, Dennis (Narrator, Charcoal Maker, Blacksmith, Samurai) and Kimberly (Keisuke, Narrator)
Eric and Doug are back behind the mic this week to discuss Solo: A Star Wars Story. They also get into a spoiler-filled discussion about Cobra Kai, a show that has exceeded almost every possible expectation. More and more Japanese founders are moving their startups to San Francisco. It’s easy to see why. There is more venture capital, more startup know-how, and more startup energy in that city than anywhere else in the world. In fact, there is a small, close knit Japanese startup community in San Francisco, with Japanese startups, mentors and investors all supporting each other and trying to grow their business there. On my last trip to San Francisco, I had a chance to sit down with one of these startup founders, Keisuke Kajitani, co-founder of Ramen Hero. He moved to Silicon Valley from Japan to start his company because he thought the US market was a better fit. Ramen Hero sells home delivered ramen meal kits. Interestingly, the popularity and ubiquity or ramen in Japan works against them, while the novelty and price of ramen in the US has enabled them to get attention from both VCs and customers there. It’s a fascinating discussion, and I think you’ll enjoy it. Show Notes for Startups Why ramen gives them a competitive advantage in the US Previous failures in the ramen business and why it's different this time Why Ramen Hero had to pivot from B2B to home delivery What's great about the Japanese startup scene in San Francisco How many companies can the market sustain? Welcome to Disrupting Japan, straight talk from the Japan’s most successful entrepreneurs. I'm Tim Romero and thanks for joining me. More and more, Japanese startup founders are looking at, or even moving to Silicon Valley. It’s easy to see the appeal. San Francisco is home to the largest and most competitive startup ecosystem in the world. In fact, there’s a small Japanese startup community in San Francisco, with Japanese startups, mentors, and investors all supporting each other and trying to make it work. Of course, the founders that come from Japan—well, it’s a mixed group. Some successful companies view San Francisco as their logical first step towards global expansion; some are new founders that have an idea they feel is more suited to the American market than the Japanese market; and some, well, some are kind of startup tourists, visiting the offices of famous startups and going through the motions, as if they were in some sort of startup role playing game. On my last trip to San Francisco, I had a chance to sit down and talk with Keisuke Kajitani, co-founder of Ramen Hero. He and his co-founder moved to San Francisco from Japan because they thought the US would be a better market for their product, oddly, because ramen is already too popular in Japan. Now, Ramen Hero sells home delivery ramen meal kits and it’s a business that makes much more sense to launch in the US than it does in Japan. But, you know, Keisuke explains all that much better than I can. So let’s hear from our sponsor and get right to the interview. [pro_ad_display_adzone id="1404" info_text="Sponsored by" font_color="grey" ] [Interview] Tim: I’m sitting here with Keisuke Kajitani of Ramen Hero and we’re sitting here in beautiful San Francisco. So thanks for sitting down with us. Keisuke: Thanks for having me. Tim: I’ve got to say, San Francisco is not so beautiful today. Keisuke: Yeah, it’s raining hard. Tim: I don’t think I’ve ever seen this much rain in San Francisco. Keisuke: Yeah, it’s unfortunate. Tim: But we’re inside and dry, so that’s good. Listen, to get things started, why don’t you tell me a bit about Ramen Hero? Keisuke: Sure. So Ramen Hero is a meal kit service specifically focused on delivering authentic ramen to your house. So what we deliver inside of the meal kit is fresh noodles, and soup, and toppings,
