This week I spiraled out with screenwriter, showrunner & director Ilana Peña! (Diary Of A Future President, Crazy Ex-Girlfriend) We talked how earnestly loving things can make you an easy target, the double punch of when shame and anxiety spirals intertwine, annoying film and theater school bros, feeling haunted by the fear of being a horrible person, being too anxious to do drugs, and so much more. Plus, Ilana shares a hilarious and vulnerable shame story about how at the precise moment that she finally thought she had left her gullible, messy teenaged ways behind her and was living her best and savviest adult life...she was duped by some evil internet scammers, careening her into questioning EVERYTHING. Follow Ilana on Instagram @lanstagram and watch Diary of a Future President on Disney+ while you still can- they're removing it from the platform 5/26! Gah! Yup, THAT Toni Basil who broke many records with one of the biggest hits and most catchy songs, well, ever. Toni is here to chat about her entire career, a career that has spanned a whopping six decades and still going strong. A career that includes dancing, choreographing, singing, and acting. We start at the beginning, Toni was drawn to the business at a young age with parents who were entertainers, taking up dance and cheering while in High School. Toni's passion for dance, she was one of the seven original Lockers, landed her premiere gigs as a choreographer working with musical icons like Tina Tuner and David Bowie. Toni opens up about what working with each was like and what music legends she would still like to work with. Toni has also choreographed many of our fav films including “My Best Friends Wedding” - we chat about what working with Julia Roberts and Cameron Diaz was like - and “Legally Blond” - we chat about the joys of teaching Reese Witherspoon moves and the infamous “bend and snap”. One Icon Toni has, not only worked with, but became close lifelong friends with is Bette Midler. Toni chats about what working with Bette is like and what it is like to be BFF's with one of the most recognized women in the world. Toni chats about how she went from choreographer behind the camera to singer with “Mickey”, a song that tops every Top 100 songs of the 80's list ever made. Toni chats about what it was like to be a singer in the early 1980s when contemporaries like Madonna were rising up the musical scene as well. We discuss the influence of MTV in helping make a singer's career in the early 80s and the concept, dance, and look - she wore her original high school cheerleading sweater - she created for “Mickey” which helped make it one of the most played videos in MTV's early days. A triple threat, Toni has also starred in many movies and TV shows working with greats like Robert Downy, Jr. and Penny Marshall. Toni chats about how the business has changed over the years, what she thinks of current music, who she would like to play her in the movie of her life, and what is next for the woman who just doesn't want to slow down. Finally, we need to know about the last time she hit the town with BFF Bette Midler and just what do these two lifelong friends do for a girls night out. Carinn, Kate and Kathryn recap Hulu's Little Fires Everywhere Episodes 2 & 3 *** There is a lot going on with Mia. What’s with the attitude? Without some context or a big reveal, we wonder whether we are going to feel differently about her at some point. We hope so. (1:06) *** The Vagina Monologues book club does show us another side of Mia when she comes to Elena’s defense and, unlike the book, gives us some great interactions between Mia and Elena. (6:02) *** Elena overserves herself the Chardonnay and she and Mia talk motherhood -- the seeds and all. We love this moment of alignment between these two strong matriarchs. (9:00) *** Reese is the most adorable annoying person ever. Has she typecast herself or has she found her sweet spot? (12:30) *** We discuss the killer question Elena asks Mia - do you think Pearl likes you? Elena “gets it” and understands the insecurities and doubts of motherhood. She even offers us a great scene with Izzy where she suggests that you make your own narrative in life. (14:28) *** Izzy’s vulnerability and the reasons for her angst are coming through so clearly in many dimensions and layers. (17:00) *** #teamMoody is gathering steam! Carinn and Kathryn are seeing a little more “edge” in him and they are liking how he and Pearl are vibing. Carinn is still not totally sold, though, seeing some hints of maliciousness, holding her back. And what about Pearl and her intentions? (22:28) *** Kate loves when Moody stands up for Pearl. Kathryn thinks it isn’t that believable and Carinn has a REAL problem with the whole scene. (28:10) *** The adoption battle is game on! Is biology the most important aspect or is it the life that you give them once they’re born? And why is Mia soooo involved in this drama? It’s weird and creepy. (33:03) *** Lexi is getting a tough hand in this adaptation! They amp up her bad acts to the extreme. It’s harsh and wrong and we’re not ok with it. (43:40) *** Mia is a sexual being! This is a BIG departure from the book. Carinn predicted this must have been a note from Kerry Washington in the writers’ room...Mia has to be a sexual being. Mia is teaching Pearl this too. (50:28) *** Elena is no push over. Kathryn loves the scene where Elena defends Mia to her husband and tells him to mow the lawn. She also noted that when Izzy comes out in her homecoming dress her parents notice her pretty dress whereas Mia notices her bloody need. This is clearly a metaphor for who sees what. (53:22) *** They drop the fire references in episodes two and three. Good? Or dropped it like it’s hot too quickly? Do we care who set the fire? Is that question moving the story forward? (59:26) *** These episodes are sprinkled with so many Easter eggs from Friends, Hello Sunshine, Legally Blond -- and even Celeste Ng herself! (63:25) *** Reese’s makeup and Bill’s rings are defining them and defining the era. (65:52) *** Carinn grew up wanting to be Elena Richardson, but now gets on the couch for her parenting fears. Then Kathryn gets personal too. These things hit home for us! (69:35) *** We plug “Books 4 Kids”, Carinn’s daughter’s fabulous podcast that recommends books for parents to get for their kids. For many of us, going home to the place where you grew up can be, at best, stressful. But what if you could recreate just the good parts of your childhood home -- the TV shows that kept you company and helped you shut out the rest of the world? My guest this week is Sam Pancake, who you may know from Arrested Development, Legally Blond 2, Where the Bears Are, Last Will and Testicle, and the fantastic film You're Killing Me. Sam grew up on a steady media diet of 70s cheese that had, by the time he moved to LA to be an actor, grown a bit stale. So imagine his shock when he discovered a troupe of actors who'd found a way to remix the schlock of his childhood into something new and absolutely insane.
