The story of The Real Ambassadors, a jazz musical created by Dave Brubeck and Iola Brubeck for Louis Armstrong in the 1950/60s. The original show, featured Louis Armstrong, Carmen McCrae, Dave Brubeck and Lambert Hendricks and Bavan, and was performed live only once, at the Monterey Jazz Festival in 1962. This year's Monterey Jazz Festival, September 23-25, 2022, is the 60th Anniversary of the performance. The musical is based on the Jazz Ambassadors Program established by President Eisenhower and the US State Department during the Cold War as an effort to win hearts and minds around the world. Jazz musicians were sent out to represent the freedom and creativity of America through their art form. The irony is that Louis Armstrong, Dizzy Gillespie and most of the other Jazz Ambassadors were Black—they were treated like royalty around the world, but could not stay in hotels or play in integrated bands in their own country. The Brubeck's musical was a chance for Louis Armstrong to speak out about his deep feelings about racism and segregation in this country — feelings he rarely expressed publicly. The story features original music, rare archival recorded letters back and forth between the Brubecks and Louis Armstrong about the project, rehearsal recordings and interviews with Dave and Iola Brubeck. Other voices include: the Brubeck's sons, Chris and Dan Brubeck; Keith Hatschek, author of newly released book, "The Real Ambassadors;” Ricky Riccardi, Director of Research Collections for the Louis Armstrong House Museum; and singer/actress Yolande Bavan, the last surviving performer involved in the project. The Real Ambassadors is a poignant tale of cultural exchange, anti-racism, jazz history, and it's a love story—between life-long husband and wife partners, Iola and Dave Brubeck and their vision for a better world. The Peabody Award winning Kitchen Sisters, Davia Nelson and Nikki Silva, have created hundreds of stories for NPR, public media and their Webby Award-winning podcast “The Kitchen Sisters Present.” Brandi Howell is a member of The Kitchen Sisters team and the producer of The Echo Chamber, a podcast about music and its social impact. The Real Ambassadors was produced by The Kitchen Sisters (Nikki Silva and Davia Nelson) and Brandi Howell in collaboration with Jackson Spenner. Mixed by Jim McKee. Thanks to Keith Hatschek, Chris, Brubeck, Dan Brubeck, Ricky Riccardi, Yolande Bavan; Lisa Cohen; and Wynton Marsalis. Unfortunately, many mental health clinicians will experience a client's suicide in the course of their career. The loss of a client to suicide often reflects a life changing experience which can require considerable processing to reconcile and reach some kind of understanding. In parallel, risk assessment can reflect a major source of distress, not only for clinician trainees but likewise for seasoned clinicians. Clinical psychologist, professor and author, Dr. Lisa Cohen, joins us for a very important discussion around novel ways of conceptualizing suicide and suicide risk assessment which focus on when a client may be at most risk for suicide as opposed to who is at most risk over the course of their lives. This novel way of conceptualizing suicide may allow for more effective, well-placed interventions as well as augment clinician confidence in their risk assessments. In this conversation we cover: the prevalence rates of suicide and how the risk stratifies by age & genderthe most common mental disorder comorbidities of suicidewhat is known about individuals who complete suicide with little to no apparent warning "out of the blue"a brief review of some of the proposed constructs that have emerged for characterizing pre suicidal mental state (e.g., Suicidal Behaviour Disorder, Suicide Crisis Syndrome, Acute Suicidal Affective Disturbance)how these constructs differ from “longer-term” considerations of predictive risk around suicidality that most clinicians would be familiar with (e.g., hopelessness etc.)how assessment of risk should be undertaken as a function of what is known about shifts in cognitive, behavioural and emotional patterns in the days leading up to a suicide attemptthe kinds of psychotherapeutic or psychiatric interventions that flow from perhaps a higher resolution picture of what the days or hours leading up to a suicide crisis look likemeasures that are available to assess acute riskan overview of the Narrative Crisis Model how clinicians can emotionally relate in a healthy, balanced and sustainable way to the ongoing risk of losing a client to suicidethe value of safety plans/contracts misconceptions that clinicians may be laboring under with respect to the risk assessments they are undertaking Dr. Lisa J. Cohen is clinical professor of psychiatry at the Carl Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai, working at the Mount Sinai Beth Israel location. Before the first case of COVID-19 was ever diagnosed, policy makers, scholars, and practitioners had been exploring how developments in AI, machine learning, and the gig economy were reshaping the labour market. Then the pandemic happened, and it forced us to rethink these debates altogether: our offices have merged with our homes, long-established processes have been erased, and entirely new roles have been created. To help us understand how these changes will impact the future of work, we're joined by Lisa Cohen, an associate professor of organizational behaviour at McGill University who specializes in jobs and the labour market, and Scott McDonald, the President and CEO of Oliver Wyman, an international management consulting firm. In the first of an infrequent series, the Midnight Express Podcast delves into other RPGs, movies, and popular media that can inspire your oWoD games, or provide some variety at your table. In the inaugural episode, the Swedish dark fantasy game 'Symbaroum' comes under the spotlight; BK and Wendell brave the horrors of old Symbar, stride into the darkness of Davokar and unearth the roots of the game. They explore various aspects of the game from character creation, to game mechanics, and the importance of mood, theme, and story. Wendell points to Origin: Spirits of the Past for further inspiration, BK can't pronounce Modiphius to save his life (he'll do better next time), and they both agree that art like this, this, and this are reasons enough to buy to game. The books mentioned in the podcast were: Symbaroum RPG Core Book (English) Advanced Players Guide (English) Monster Codex (English) See you next time as we return to the World of Darkness and explore another aspect of Storytelling. The show rediscovered the mission statement inherent in its title this week, as the 2016 Presidential election came to a close with a twist ending that no one expected, not even the candidates. Lisa Cohen and Cynthia Kaplan join me to sort through our shock, provide irresponsible speculation as to what the heck happened, and to trash Florida, because we're still elitist. Nudist libertarians are discussed. Breaking terrible news to one's children is a topic. Plus: Snake Island!
Lisa Cohen was born in Washington, DC and placed in the now-defunct Junior Village with her four brothers, who despite having a living parent became wards of the DC foster care system. As a foster child, she underwent thirteen, often shocking and traumatic placements until finally entering the Independent Living system prior to aging out. She became a professional boxer in 1996 at the age of 28 and fought under the name of Lisa “Too Fierce” Foster. During her career, she won two World Titles. After her retirement from boxing in 2003, she established and ran a boxing and fitness gym in DC. Lisa’s new book, Too Fierce, chronicles her experience within the DC foster system and her discovery of the sport of boxing as a way to escape the fears, insecurity and bitterness brought about by her ill treatment at the hands of foster families who were expected to love and protect her. In 2005, Lisa started and managed a non-profit called Capitol City Champs which was geared to life coaching, fitness, dressing for success, and etiquette for at-risk children aged 8 – 18. As an offshoot to this enterprise, Ms. Cohen undertook a number of motivational speaking engagements and career days aimed at women, children and young adults, and governmental agencies engaged in foster care. She continues to speak about foster care to interested groups and is an active member of Rotary Club of Washington DC which has proudly served the community for over a century. She graduated from the University of the District of Columbia in 2012 with a BA degree in English at the age of 45. She lives in Washington, DC with her second husband, Neil, an attorney. She has a grown son, Gerald Foster and a daughter, Taylor Foster.

Lisa Cohen is the published author of the book called “Overcome The BS of MS: A 3-Step Plan For Women Living With Multiple Sclerosis” and the founder of Rockstar Women with MS. In 2001, Lisa was diagnosed with relapsing-remitting MS and at that point, her symptoms don't come and go. She experienced worsening physical impairments which made her daily activities more difficult to do. After much realization, Lisa has developed a "rockstar" mindset and believed that there are options to get better and be the person she wanted to be. She got used to dealing with the illness and it became easier for her to live the rockstar life. Through her own experience and by talking to women suffering from MS in the different states in the US and in other countries, Lisa was compelled to write the book which aims to empower women and help them live actively to further improve their way of life.
Lisa Cohen, interested in her teacher. RC-2013-104: Margaret (Extended Cut) (2011) Your browser does not support this audioIt took a while, but Kenneth Lonergan's follow up to You Can Count On Me finally got seen by audiences in 2011. During the marathon commentary (for, Lonergan's extended cut stretches past the three-hour mark), I go into the legal wrangling that delayed the release of Margaret. I comment on the theatrical cut's benefit's and shortcomings before declaring that Lonergan's cut—the film he turned in—is a masterpiece. (Martin Scorsese and Thelma Schoonmaker oversaw the editorial paring-down process that produced the theatrical cut, and though Lonergan ultimately approved, I will argue in this episode, he knew his cut was better.) After pointing out some of the differences between the cuts—which include everything from sound design to score to whole storylines that were excised—I settle into gush mode and praise the film's fresh approach to familiar themes. I spend the rest of the episode (when I'm not sticking up for Anna Paquin) telling the world why Jeannie Berlin's performance may be the most under-appreciated supporting turn in the history of moving pictures. Lonergan himself, playing Lisa Cohen's distant dad, is chubbier than you probably imagined he'd be, and Matt Damon looks younger than you thought he'd look. This movie is weird like that. Grab your popcorn and a diet cola, and settle in—this three-hour urban opera is a doosie... And don't call me honey, okay?Listen to the mp3. Or turn your life into an iTunes opera—Bravi!
Young Coco Chanel (Audrey Tautou) works as a seamstress by day and a cabaret entertainer by night, then she meets a wealthy heir (Benoît Poelvoorde) and becomes his lover and fashion consultant. Tired of the flowery hats, tight corsets and yards of lace that define women's fashion, Coco uses her lover's clothing as a starting point to distill an elegant and sophisticated line of women's clothing that propels her to the top of Parisian haute couture.
