Dr. Shanahan is the leading authority on nutrition and human metabolism. A board-certified Family Physician with over 20 years of clinical experience, and NY Times bestselling author of The FatBurn Fix, Deep Nutrition and Food Rules, her expertise is fixing the underlying problems that cause metabolic damage and inflammation, leading to autoimmunity, weight gain, diabetes, cancer and accelerated aging processes. Her passion is helping people feel their best. Her new book - Dark Calories: How Vegetable Oils Destroy Our Health and How We Can Get It Back is available now.  Her book Deep Nutrition – Why Your Genes Need Traditional Food was voted one of the Best Health and Wellness Books of 2017 by Sports Illustrated and has a blurb from the late Kobe Bryant, former NBA player with the L.A Lakers.  “[Deep Nutrition is] a different philosophy, It's something that we all had to adjust to, but we trust Dr. Cate implicitly. I've seen great results from it from when I started doing it―it's worked well for me.” --Kobe Bryant Note: In the EU (vs USA) Rapeseed oil can be a cheaper and decent source of healthy fats but tends to be highly processed, which may lower its nutritional value and alter its health effects. When possible, try to select cold-pressed or minimally refined rapeseed oil, both of which retain most of this oil's original nutrients and benefits. Here are some of the things we talked about in today's show:  Metabolic damage – what it is and why we need to avoid it Insulin resistance and why it can be so difficult to lose weight if eating too many dark calories The “Hateful 8”: cottonseed, corn, canola, soybean, sunflower, grapeseed, rice bran and safflower oil and better alternatives.  The role vegetable oils play in depleting antioxidants which leads to us ageing faster.  The misconceptions that metabolism always slows down with age Connecting your food with nature and how to eat with intention. I used to think my body was simply a machine, and you just need to hit a few buttons to lose weight... Hit the button for increasing calories burned by moving your booty; hit the button for decreasing calories in your pie hole. AKA Calories In vs. Calories Out. CICO is a law, and it is true. BUT our bodies are more like complex computers… there's more to our programming than meets the eye. To lose weight we need to dial in 3 things: Your diet - specifically how much calories you consume, your activity level - how much you move around each day to burn calories, and the 3rd piece of the weight loss puzzle is the one that most doctors, nutritionists, trainers, and people miss…  The metabolism. And I'm not talking about that thing that you believe you are born with and can't change. When people go on a diet or start an exercise program and they have #1 and #2 in place, but they don't lose any weight, or maybe it moves a bit at first but then stalls out fast… this is often due to today's topic: metabolic damage. We'll discuss who metabolic damage affects the most, signs and symptoms of metabolic damage, take you back in time to my middle school days for a useful analogy, and more! Time Stamps: (1:32) Goodbye Kitchen Recording Studio (5:15) The 3 Dials to Weight Loss (6:32) Your Metabolism (8:24) Prospect Example (10:12) Metabolic Damage (14:56) Untreated Hormonal Issues (17:52) Middle School Trombone Days (24:55) Taking The Next Step With Us---------------------Follow @vanessagfitness on Instagram for daily fitness tips & motivation. ---------------------Download Our FREE Metabolism-Boosting Workout Program---------------------Join the Women's Metabolism Secrets Facebook Community for 25+ videos teaching you how to start losing fat without hating your life!---------------------Click here to send me a message on Facebook and we'll see how I can help or what best free resources I can share!---------------------Interested in 1-on-1 Coaching with my team of Metabolism & Hormone Experts? Mike, like a lot of us, waited until he got some bad news to start working out.  His doctor was watching his cholesterol levels sky rocket and told him that he needed to change his lifestyle before it was too late.  That coupled with losing family members to cardiovascular disease, really made him think. So why does that light spark for some and not others? Some perhaps just don't believe it or maybe "seeing really is believing" .  That French fry definitely won't kill you, but put that together with a poor lifestyle and things will turn bleak.  Maybe the issue is that it is a slow process, so not degenerating quickly, makes you believe it isn't true. What does taking care of the whole person mean?Mike talks about how they take care of the whole person, which to him means going beyond just that 30 minutes you workout together.  In order to really achieve your goals, things need to be IN sync with each other.  That means staying hydrated, working out, eating enough protein, or just walking a little bit more.  He focuses on all of these to really make sure you stay on the right track. On thing he does is Reverse Dieting. Which is when they actual increase their clients calorie goals instead of decreasing it.  Eating too little is detrimental to our goals because we trick our brain to not thinking there is enough food around.  This causes us to actually start burning muscle and end up looking skinny fat.  It is imperative that we focus on eating enough food especially protein so we can maintain lean muscle mass and really hit our target.  Another concept we touched is treating instead of cheating.  Cheating is too negative and makes us feeling like we are doing something wrong.  So instead if we focused on cheating, we should change it to treating, which implies that we deserve that treat because we hit all our other goals for that month. Fit Body Bootcamp is a fun, energetic  way to get going! As Mike said, "Just start and don't be afraid, we all start somewhere" Support the show (http://www.redefine-fitness.com)

Talking Kara's experience as a registered dietitian in the fitness coaching space to some sh*tty (but appropriate) convo about gut health! The crew sits down for some valuable discussions ya'll are gonna want to hear—all while bustin' myths and misinformation you've been led to believe. Plenty of takeaways in this one folks, so prepare to get informed. It's episode 20, time to TUNE IN. Guest bio: Kara Goss is a Registered Dietitian and NASM-Certified Personal Trainer with a firm belief that nutrition and fitness need to be personalized to an individual's goals and lifestyle. Having started her own journey with a coach in January of 2018, Kara has experienced firsthand how crucial it is to have a mentor who is unbiased and always one step ahead to help guide you to success. After completing six years of education, Kara established Kara Goss Nutrition and Fitness in October of 2019. With a clear passion for assisting others as they embark on their own health journeys, Kara considers being able to help people find their true strength, both physical and mental, one of the biggest blessings in her life. Today's topics cover: Kara's background and how she found her passion for fitness and nutrition Challenge as an RD who understands the importance of things like protein intake and physique goals because the majority of the Dietitian community holds a different stance Modest approach that many Dietitians take stems from education—taught the minimum requirements Misconceptions and fear surrounding protein consumption is an outdated viewpoint Stigma that exists among many RD's around bodybuilding, trying to build muscle, and protein consumption Tendency of RDs within clinical environments to view protein as super negative, incorrectly associating it with many health problems About finding the right RD that specializes in physical transformation Hayes Nutrition movement, anti-diet Dietitians, and conflicting perspectives within the RD community Putting everything into context and tailoring nutrition to each individual's situation Why some RD's are against helping clients reach their physique goals Fact check: debunking misinformation & myths (protein consumption, Keto, carbs, reverse dieting, etc.) The term “Metabolic Damage” and how it's used as a scare tactic, using “Metabolic Adaptation” instead, & what exactly your metabolism is Your metabolism is not slow—if something can down-regulate it can up-regulate Reverse dieting and how it helps you up-regulate important functions within the body It takes a village: a good coach should have a team of coach friends Gut health and digestion, what is normal and what is not normal? How to fix some of this sh*t: gut health labs and food sensitivity testing Knowing what tests to get and knowing what you're testing for Considering overall lifestyle factors and getting down to the behaviors of the person as well Figuring out how to manage stressors in your life Follow / Contact On Instagram! @travishawkesmedia @joshlevinefitness @karagoss_rd Watch The Video Pod On Youtube! - Youtube Channel

Has your weight loss slowed to a snail's pace even though you're in a calorie deficit? Things were working before, but suddenly things have ground to a halt. Have you pushed things too hard, forcing your body into starvation mode, and damaging your metabolism for good? Well, no. And in this episode of the show I'll explain what's actually going on and why Metabolic Damage and Starvation Mode aren't really a thing. And if you're interested in finding out more about Iron Paradise Fitness go here... https://www.ironparadisefitness.com

If you’re reading this, there’s a good chance you’re either experiencing or have experienced the following scenario: You’re dieting to lose weight and are doing everything right. You’re... - Maintaining a calorie deficit - Eating enough protein - Sticking to your meal plan - Lifting weights regularly - Limiting your cardio And at first, everything more or less went as planned. Your weight and waist went down and muscle definition went up like clockwork. And then, the gears inexplicably ground to a halt. For no apparent reason, the scale stopped moving and your reflection in the mirror stopped changing. You understand energy balance and so, determined to get the ball rolling again, you further cut your calories and increased your cardio. It worked, of course...to a point. And then you got stuck again, and this time you felt even more haggard than before. What to do? Is this as far as your body will go? Have you reached its “set point”? Is a lower body fat percentage just not in the cards for you? And then you hear about “starvation mode” and “metabolic damage.” You find stories about people, typically women, who say they aren’t losing weight with extremely low-calorie dieting and hours of exercise every week, and the culprit is (supposedly) metabolic abnormalities caused by calorie restriction. Essentially, the story goes like this: Dieting dramatically and incrementally decreases your basal metabolic rate, which eventually halts fat loss, and which requires a lengthy and involved “recovery” protocol to fix the “damage” should you ever want a healthy metabolism again. Hence, the term “metabolic damage.” When your body is experiencing the complex set of physiological adaptations that apparently cause metabolic damage, it’s said to be in “starvation mode.” This apparently kicks in the first day of your diet and gets progressively worse and worse as time goes on. How true are these claims, though? Well, the short story is this: - “Metabolic damage” isn’t real, has never stopped someone from losing weight, and doesn’t need to be “fixed” with complex and meticulous diet voodoo. - “Starvation mode” is sort of real, but isn’t nearly as dramatic as many people think. And in this podcast, you’ll learn why. Furthermore, you’ll also learn the real reasons why weight loss stalls and what you can do to easily break through weight loss plateaus. Let’s dig in. Time stamps: 6:28 - What is metabolic damage? 11:40 - What is starvation mode? 22:06 - Is starvation mode real? 26:48 - What are the real reasons you stop losing weight?
