Othniel Chisi spent 3 years inside one of the world's largest cults!  This might just be the wildest and craziest story we've ever heard in the history of the Dos & D Show.  Ote joined us on the show to tell us exactly what goes on inside cults.  From the day he was approached by one of the members, to being completely brainwashed and spending 3 years inside the organisation.  He shares the tactics they use to manipulate, how they recruit, the crazy rules inside and even the movies they make you watch to help with the brainwashing!  Ote opens up about how his life changed and the 21 hour work days he completed all in the name of the cult. Plus, what the leader was REALLY doing and how they make money.  Othniel takes us to the moment he realised he was part of a cult and how he got out of it. He has served as the Victorian Liberal leader since December 2022.  Before this episode, we have never had the fortune of welcoming on a politician but we are so glad that John joined us.  No matter which side of the political fence you sit on, this conversation will intrigue you as it is packed with previous and current issues, but most importantly, hope and inspiration!  John shares his story of getting to where he is today which involves an incredible amount of resilience...a message that is consistent throughout the episode.  He shares his thoughts on why he believes the current state of politics is so divided and what we can do to overcome the polarisation.  We talk about all the hot issues including the insane amount of debt we are in and what that means for cost of living, business and everyday Australian's. Plus, we talk foreign threats, the impact of the pandemic, the US election and much more!  John also addresses the difficulty he has faced personally in recent weeks. But once again, he shares where the strength has come from to get him through.  This episode truly has something for everyone and we know you're going to love this. Today's Word of God is about thankfulness.   I talked to a woman today who was just fired from a large Ford Auto Dealership in a major city in the U.S.    The dealership was run like a large crime syndicate - with each person keeping the other person on the defense in order to cover up their nefarious deeds within the dealership.  The woman began to bring up these incidents in the meetings, and her manager met her at the door and said,  Get your things - you and I are no longer compatible.  I will walk you back to your car.  I said, how do you think Henry Ford feels?   I think Mr. Ford called out to God and said, enough!  I can't stand to know that my name is being used for covert criminal activities.  And "God sent you there to bring everything out into the open."   A lot of times when this happens, people get fired.  (Ask me how I know!l)  She said, "I can't stand to keep driving my Ford Explorer."  I said, "Well, Henry Ford isn't to blame.  Why not just thank Mr. Ford for his glorious evolvement of the automobile because you don't have to hitch up a horse to a wagon and ride to work in the rain and the snow and the sleet.   And Mr. Ford will see that your Ford Explorer runs forever!   Ha Ha Ha Ha P.S.  That entire Ford DEalership is currently overwhelmed by Covid and the man who fired the woman and his wife who works there - off the record - got it first.

Jim always wanted to teach and it was fate. He spent fourteen years as an instructor. He loved building relationships with his students. He was balancing his teaching job and owning a shop while Shelly ran the business for him. Jim ultimately left his teaching job and went to work full-time in the business. Shelly’s background was accounting which was good for the business overall. Jim believes in a strong process-driven company. He is all about improving efficiency. Saving steps for productivity gains. Anyone can study their inefficiencies and make changes to improve productivity. He templated his systems against NASCAR. Immaculate, organized and tools quickly reached and found. Key Talking Points: Technicians at dealerships vs independent shopsDealerships have a specific type of vehicles and is flat rate- 70% of students from tech schools go directly to work in dealerships Most technicians that leave the dealerships leave the industry completely   Independent shops have a broader spectrum  Hiring more techniciansJim used Facebook Ads and Indeed for hiring  Matt posted his resume on Indeed to see what other opportunities were available- was open-minded and wanted a challenge Matt researched the shop prior to the interview- Facebook posts, reviews, and podcast interview  “Working interview”-Spent half a day interviewing and then worked with other technicians in the shop and with Jim Culture of businessClean, sterile work environment instead of stereotypical “greasy fingerprints” Take time to invest in the environment and properly working equipment    Everyone at Jim’s shop says “goodbye” to one another, something Matt was not used to at first- creates positive attitudes and cohesive culture  Leaving after 14 years for the same but new jobEveryone is afraid of the unknown and what could happen Matt didn’t leave because of money, left because it was time and unhappy with the culture of the dealership- the dealership had a counter offer for him when he put in his 2 week notice which was more money. More money didn't change the issues of why he wanted to leave. Be careful making choices based on money- often times it will not make you happier If you are burned out from your job always remember there are other opportunities available  Resources: Thanks to Matt Manzone and Jim Fleischman for their contribution to the aftermarket’s premier podcast. Most of the posts we've seen on LinkedIn from dealership GM's were heartbreaking and full of uncertainty for the industry they love so much. But Ben Weir, General Manager at Pearson Ford, provided a major bright spot, his store needs more employees. Pearson Ford is up 15% YOY for April so far. Today’s episode we have the honor of welcoming back Jim Galvin with us. Jim is the general manager at Miracle Ford in Gallatin. Welcome back, Jim! Jim Galvin 0:57 John, thank you. It’s good to be back and look forward to the podcast. And hopefully, the viewers out here will be able to learn a little bit about our milestone that is participating as we speak now. John Haggard 1:09 Yeah, let’s talk about that. Because we understand that Miracle Ford did recently celebrate an important milestone in its history. Tell us a little bit about the milestone and how it was achieved, Jim. Jim Galvin 1:20 Well, and thank you, John. First of all, we are celebrating a milestone. If you think about it, not too many businesses can say, “We celebrated 40 years in business.” When I say 40 years, it’s 40 years since 1980. And plus, not only that, John, it’s family-owned. If you put those two together, it equals success, hard work, commitment, and loyalty to our customers in our community. And believe it or not, it all starts with my father, Jim Galvin Sr., who was the original owner, CEO of Miracle Ford, and now Miracle Auto. And I must say I couldn’t be more proud of what my father has achieved of making the success of the Miracle Automotive Group and we look forward to many years as what he has taught us. John Haggard 2:06 Well, you said Miracle Ford was founded in 1980. You had said, Jim, in an earlier podcast that your father had worked for Ford Motor Company first for I think it was 25 years before founding Miracle Ford in 1980. What do you remember him telling you about what it was like to work for Ford? I would assume he would come home and around the dinner table sometimes talk about “Hey, I was on the road. I went here, I went there” and he would talk about Ford. Jim Galvin 2:34 Well, you said it, John, he was definitely on the road. But dad lived an interesting life when he worked for Ford Motor Company. I can remember a lot of examples. I can remember the time where I first walked into the main headquarters in Detroit, Michigan. And when I first walked in the main headquarters, all I could see were men in blue, pinstripe suits. Everybody was in a blue suit. You think about In a corporate world back then, you would not dare not be in a suit. It just blew me away seeing all these guys in a suit. It sort of freaked me out because I was probably eight or nine years old and I’m thinking, “Wow, Dad, look at these people! They must be really something else.” He walked me around the headquarters because that’s where he worked in Dearborn, and he took me into the conference room. When I walked into this conference room, and you think about me, eight or nine, I had never been to a conference room. This room was absolutely unbelievable! I mean, the conference table was as long as the football field, there were pictures on the wall of Henry Ford, and it was all glass and I’m thinking, “Wow, what do we do here?” My dad said, “This is where it all started. This is where I meet, this why travel and this is what Ford Motor Company’s all about.” Then he walked me outside and we went about a half-mile to a place where Henry Ford designed a museum called Greenfield Village. I thought that was pretty cool because it was a replica of how the American culture and agriculture took place and how Henry started the Model T Manufacture, his plan, how people lived. It’s still there in Detroit. But for me, seeing this for the first time, I’m thinking, “Hey, Dad, this is pretty cool. I’m very impressed.” It was pretty cool, because not only did I see all that, but he worked with famous people. He worked with Lee Iacocca, Ross Roberts, Tom Wagner, and probably one of his best friends from this day is Joe Kathy, who was the CEO and the founder of America Motor. Dad had a great life with Ford Motor Company, he was very corporate, he was Ford Blue. All we could think about it in terms of Ford Blue we mean we bleed Ford. It means nothing but Ford is in our system and from this day and age, he loved it and he brought all those characteristics and ability to Gallatin. That’s how we got to become Miracle Ford. John Haggard 2:35 You know, it must have really been interesting because you’re talking about being eight or nine. And before that, you knew your dad traveled and he was away from home. He wasn’t there every night for dinner, but yet you got to go up there and see, “Well, what does he really do?” And would you say that was sort of a spark for you? Did you sort of think, “When I grow up, this is what I’m going to do.” Jim Galvin 5:29 Well, at that time, No, I did not. Dad did travel a lot. He was gone five days a week, and he came home on weekends. But when he came on weekends, it was all about us. I mean, he made sure that he took care of us, he played with us, he did things that we wanted to do. We ate at the kitchen table, I mean, it was family values, and he regretted being gone for that time. We traveled a bunch and we got transferred around a lot. We lived in four different cities before we bought the dealership in Gallatin here in Tennessee. But most importantly, he knew that he had to do what he did to make his life successful, and also to teach us kids to be successful as well. Looking back, I don’t regret him being gone five days a week, because I knew he made up the difference when he came home on the weekends, and he still found time to coach me as Little League team. He took me to ball games, and we really had a good, good relationship and I did not regret him being gone. I still admire him for all his accomplishments that he did with Ford Motor Company. John Haggard 6:37 Yeah, so let’s talk about some of the life lessons. He would come home like you said he’d be there on the weekend. Things that you remember when you were little that really stick in your mind today. “Well, Dad said this, if you’re going to do that,” for example. Jim Galvin 6:51 Well, I’m going to be honest with you and it might get a little emotional, since the passing of him on November 30. My father was simply the best, John. I mean, he was the rock of our family. He was also the rock of Miracle Ford. He loved life and was devoted to the family, and also God. He came from eight brothers and sisters. His dad was a doctor, and his mother was a devoted housewife. Something that really sticks with me and we try to do today is that every Sunday, my grandfather made a point to have everyone sit at the dinner table on Sunday. So they had dinner every Sunday at the dinner table. To me, that brings a lot of family values. He brought that back to us, as kids growing up, he made it a point that he would cook breakfast every morning for us before we got up and went to church, and that was his deal. He wanted to cook breakfast for us and he wanted to make sure that we sit at the table. He loved the fact of doing that to get to know us better and we get to know him. To me, he brought tremendous family values. That’s something that hopefully I’ll teach my kids and my kids to teach their kids. It was all about family and God, that’s why it’s worked for him, and it’s working for me as well. John Haggard 8:14 What would you say, Jim, if you think back of all the things that your dad taught you above everything else? Was there one thing that really stuck in your mind, it’s sort of like front and center above everything? Jim Galvin 8:27 Probably, tradition. It’s all about tradition in our family. We do things a little bit differently because we’re so close. We always seem to talk about things in our life that represent us the best and God as well. How he taught us through tradition, will hopefully teach us as we go on and teach our kids. He tried his best and I think it all goes back to his ties with Ford Motor Company with those executives. Dad always liked to watch and listen. He always taught me, “Don’t be afraid to do things that you think that you should do.” He called it, “Don’t fake life.” When you don’t fake life, that means, don’t fake, make sure you know how to do it. Don’t be afraid to make mistakes. Sitting with him and working with him for the last, 34 years, he says, “Just listen, and watch. And when you know what you’re supposed to do, go out and do it. Don’t be afraid, make that mistake. Because you are going to make mistakes, but you’re going to learn from those mistakes.” That has stuck with me more than anything else. Because now, since his passing, I’m running the dealership now. I’m always saying to myself, “You know what, what would dad do in this situation?” And I’m saying, “You know what, this is it. What would he do?” And when I sit down and I close my eyes, and I just think it comes clear to me. You know what, John, it really works because I put better decision making because of what he has taught me, and it’s a pretty cool thing, and I thank him every day. I just couldn’t be more proud of the values and the quality of what he’s taught me. John Haggard 10:12 You know, a lot of family businesses, if you look at statistics, don’t make it to the second generation or the third or the fourth, and now you’re on the second generation. What would you say? Because family can be complicated, sometimes. People have different opinions, different ways they want to do things. As you all come together, at the end of the day, is there like one or two keys to success that you would tell someone if they own a family business? Or how do you stay together and how do you come to a consensus and move forward? Jim Galvin 10:43 Communicate. Family Business is hard, It’s very hard. Someone may get their feelings hurt on a situation but the bottom line is, talk about it. Good or bad, you know, we’ve got to stick together because is our business, and we’re the rock. If we start arguing and start doing things that we’re not supposed to do, other people are going to see this. When other people see it, it’s going to break the rock of family tradition and communication. So get it out in the open, and discuss it. Do it from the beginning, don’t wait. Because if you wait, it’s just gonna get worse. So I would say communication is the key to any family business. In this day and age, John, you think 40 years business, there are not really many businesses around that have been here that long or have celebrated 40 years or 50 years. Or family-owned businesses because it’s just changed. I mean, we all see it. In our industry and our family, and with my brother and my sisters, I’m going to be honest with you since the passing of my father we have come closer. We’ve communicated more and we’ve been more open to each other. We say, “You know what, this is what we should do. This is how we should do it.” If it doesn’t work, then we figure out how we’re going to fix it. You know, we talked about it, and we’re talking, we’re communicating, and we’re getting tighter. Even though we’re a close-knit family, but I feel we’re getting stronger, pulled in together. That comes from one thing, that comes from my father upstairs, and he’s looking down on us. I truly believe that’s the whole key is to make sure family communicates because once you break away, then things start to go terribly, and we do not want that to happen. John Haggard 12:38 Yeah, you answered that very quickly. I said, “What’s the one thing? Communicate!” As you said, don’t let it fester, but communicate. So as you look back, Jim, over those 40 years, what would you say some of the milestone moments were some of the big surprises like, “Wow, look at this or look at what we did here or we didn’t think we could go there.” Is anything that sticks out like that were really exciting milestones leading up to 40? Jim Galvin 13:04 Well, if you would have seen our old facility, which was built in 1960. We’ve been in there close to 35 years, with the ceiling with water leaks. I mean, this building was absolutely old. But you know what, we made it our home and people knew where we were. The milestone of us to build a new facility that was probably the biggest, biggest project we’ve ever undertaken. But before that, I would say our accomplishment was the Blue Oval Certification, which is the highest standard of Ford Motor Company with a quality of customer satisfaction. The amount of time, sweat, hardship, and commitment of our employees and us that we had to go to get Blue Oval Certified was an accomplishment. From this day on, we’re very proud of that. We also look back at the best of Sumner County, how we’ve been voted each and every year for the last 10 years as the best Ford Dealership, in our area. We speak highly of that. It’s all due from our people here, our processes and our community involvement. We’re very proud because Gallatin has been an awful good Miracle Forward and Miracle Auto. We like to reach out any way possible to the community and like to thank Him and do special stuff. Without them and without our employees in the commitment that they gave to make us successful for years, we wouldn’t be here, John. You think about the Miracle, I want to talk a little about the Miracle because my father always wanted a dealership, but he did not want it to be called “Jim Galvin Ford,” he wanted something different. When my father and mother got together, they really researched, they’re very religious. They said, “You know what? The perfect word and the perfect scenario would be the name Miracle.” Because they knew Miracle could do so much with that name. People would ask, “Why did you name your dealership Miracle Ford?” Because of the things that we do and how we do it and how we were brought up. It just makes sense and it ties into so many neat things. It’s very clever because dad was very open, but he didn’t want to be in the limelight. That’s why he didn’t want his name, “Jim Galvin Ford.” He wanted something that would truly represent our family values, our community, our religion and most important, “Miracle” came to mind. John Haggard 15:36 So let’s look. It’s been 40 years. Let’s take a lookout with a crystal ball the next 5-10 maybe 20 years, that’s out there? What do you see for Miracle Ford? What’s coming up? Jim Galvin 15:47 I see growth, I see this town booming. Sumner County is the third largest, fastest-growing county in the state of Tennessee. I see electric vehicles becoming more popular, like the autonomous vehicle. I mean, it’s amazing that the manufacturers and what they’re doing. It’s changing, and we’ve got to be on board. Growth, the technology, and we got to change to, we’ve got to make sure we can’t keep doing things the old way. We’ve got to go out and make it better. In 5 to 10 years, you’re gonna see a lot more electric vehicles from Ford Motor Company, along with other manufacturers. I think with the autonomous vehicles, I still we still have a little more time. I see eight 9-10 years down the road before, everybody’s up to speed on that. It’s all coming to that, John. The main thing is Ford is still going to be around, and we’re still going to make them proud. John Haggard 16:43 So as you look at everything that we’ve talked about, over these past 40 years that got you to where you are and what we’ve just now heard about, as you see, the future. Anything we didn’t talk about or does anyone stand out or something that you want to say that I didn’t ask you about? Jim Galvin 17:01 Well, for somebody that wants to achieve 40 years, and they say, “How do you do it?” Customers want to know are you really believable? Do you really actually want to do what you do? Just like my father taught me, he was taught by his executives at Ford Motor Company. It’s amazing when you sit down and you listen, I keep going back to is listening, because I’m a firm believer, just listen to what people tell you, and then do it. And don’t be afraid to do it. If you are, you’re not going to make the next 40 years. Don’t be afraid to make a change either because change is also good. Once you make that change, believe in it, stick with it, and make sure you tell your people, “This is how it’s going to be,” and get them on board. When you get everybody together in that circle, John, it will work. That’s my goal, that’s something I always been taught by my father and from other people for Ford Motor Company. I can honestly say that this business has been such a pleasure and delight and I’m so glad to be part of working for Miracle Ford and for Ford Motor Company. John Haggard 18:07 Jim, let’s say this: Here’s to the next 40 years. Jim Galvin 18:12 John, we’re going to go that way. We’re gonna try really hard! John Haggard 18:16 One more time everybody that’s Jim Galvin, the general manager of family-owned Miracle Ford in Gallatin. And yes, it is a very fast-growing area. https://youtu.be/wVGKlTmEsFE Jae Malinowski has been in the automotive trade for 25 years, starting in the auto-body industry at 18, he then transitioned to auto sales for a couple years. When a chance encounter with a headhunter introduced him to the tire industry. He started out in a management training program starting doing commercial tires to learning service agriculture, forestry and mining tires. He had opened his first shop at 28. A new startup with 4 employees after five years. They had 16 employees and 5 million dollars in sales. After parting ways with his business partners, he wasn’t sure if he wanted to go back into the tire business.  After working for a couple of luxury brand auto dealers selling cars, he decided to get back into the tire industry (because no one ever leaves the tire industry). Starting his current venture Faithfull Tirecraft in 2014. Jae knew his best chance at success would be to align his new shop with a national banner brand that he knew would give him the best chance of succeeding. The Tirecraft dealer network in Canada are all independently owned making it Canada’s largest dealer network of tire dealers and automotive repair facilities. He started Faithfull Tirecraft with a focus as a tire service shop, with luck with his first two hires, he was able to get two really good automotive repair technicians and immediately pivoted towards an automotive general repair facility that had a 50/50 split machinal maintenance and light-duty and commercial tires. Chris Tolleson opened 49 Tire Pros Pros in October of 1990. Chris had been "gum dipped" as the old-timers say since birth. Bill Tolleson, Chris's father, has been with Bridgestone/Firestone since 1966. Before opening 49 Tire Pros, Chris had been employed by Bridgestone/Firestone for 7 years, the last two as the youngest manager in their 1,600 store chain, in Hattiesburg, Mississippi. In 1990, Chris was able to move back home, to Florence and open 49 Tire Pros. The communities of Richland, Florence, and Pearl grew and so did 49 Tire Pros. In 1999 49 Tire Pros expanded from a small waiting area and 8 service bays to 12 service bays and a much larger waiting area, office suites, and doubled our warehouse space. 49 Tire Pros is one of the south's largest Bridgestone/Firestone affiliated dealers. Since 49 Tire Pros opened in 1990 Bridgestone, Firestone, and Dayton have been it's core tire lines. 49 Tire Pros also has grown to become a dealer for Michelin®, BFGoodrich®, Uniroyal®, Goodyear, and Dunlop. 49 Tire Pros also carries many other brands like Cooper, Falken, Hankook, Mastercraft, Winston, and many more. Zack Williams has always been about his business. In 2010 he had his own clothing line and also started a promotion company that combined his love for parties and helping people. His life changed after a horrific accident that cost him to lose everything; even almost his life.     Zack later took his learned marketing skills to Hard Rock Cafe as their Marketing and Sales Director. His career at Hard Rock was going really well. But while curating an event for one of his dream companies Harley Davidson he was offered a job as their marketing manager. So he made the switch and loved it. Zack felt that the Harley Davidson brand fitted who he is. He was very successful as their Marketing manager and really great with people. That caused the upper management team offered him a position on the sales floor and he was able to negotiate and keep his marketing salary plus commissions when he sold a unit. In the beginning, he considered himself mediocre salesperson making 100 calls a week. One day he had a paradigm shift and knew he had to make more money. Zack tripled his calls to a minimum of 300 calls week and started cash flowing $8k-$10k a month. His average unit sold was 18 per month.    Zack was approached by the Ford Dealership three times before he was open to having a conversation about the change. He was very nervous to make the shift, he was newly married and about to have a daughter, but after talking to his wife he went for it. (Sam is technically the first guest Syd interviewed back in June.) Sam is a bird mom, cat mom and seasoned comic whose been performing in rooms all across the southland for the past 5 years. She produces Laught-HER, which is a live female driven stand up comedy show. Highlights: Paying your dues as a female comedian in a male dominated industry. Embarrassing dating stories and Syd’s colon hydro therapist Dr. Bo Wagner attending her stand up show. Sam getting paid for a stand up gig in Chicken and opening for Louis C. K. You have to be passionate about the stand up grind. Starting out as a comedian entails a lot of late nights with little or no pay. It’s important to have a side hustle to give you stability to pursue your dreams. Syd and Sam address the gray line of sexual harassment in a comedic undertone. Investing in weed or vibrators. Sam’s ideas and creative process for her writing. Automotive Alley is a half hour ride from my home. So I got the grand tour and we interviewed in the customer lounge on a Saturday morning. Shelly and Jim’s hospitality was great and I was impressed with the breadth of work this shop performs. Talking Points: Jim attended Alfred State College for Automotive Tech. He went to work for a Ford Dealership as a shop foreman. Jim’s racing and organizational experience came by being part of a race team that ran Busch and NASCAR. He was recruited from his alma mater, Alfred State College, and became an instructor. Jim always wanted to teach and it was fate. Spent fourteen years as an instructor. He loved building relationships with his students. Mid-career technicians may want to become an automotive technology instructor Some institutions require having a teaching degree. Some do not. It depends on the degree they bestow on the student. He was balancing his teaching job and owning a shop while Shelly ran the business for him. Jim ultimately left his teaching job and went to work full-time in the business. Shelly’s background was accounting which was good for the business overall. Jim is a planner. They picked the name Automotive Alley because it can embrace many different business models and allow the business to scale. Jim believes in a strong process driven company. He is all about improving efficiency. Saving steps for productivity gains. Anyone can study their inefficiencies and make changes to improve productivity. He templated his systems against NASCAR. Immaculate, organized and tools quickly reached and found. Jim perpetually works on streamlining to increase his productivity. He misses teaching, but he does get his fix by helping his techs and shares insights with his customers. Automotive Alley also specialized in street rod, hot rods, upgrades, and restorations. For Jim, the word “can’t” is not in his vocabulary. He feels that he has the facility, the people, the reference materials, the capabilities, and the procedures to do just about anything. They have a daily meeting with the entire team. He worked on a SEMA car and helped integrate a 2005 Mustang powerplant into a 1967 Mustang. Jim and Shelly have plans to grow into more locations and even additional business models such as an off-road center. They are finalizing the companies standard operating procedures to paper. An impressive element in the business is how Jim integrated Smart Home Control Technology into his business. Light switches, alarms, telephones all controlled by software and easy to monitor from a smartphone. Every door lock has a code and he wrote a rule to turn on lights and set up the company for the start of the day to include the open sign. All of this is based on software rules. Jim is a giver and will help friends in the business from his town. He sees the technician shortage from a retention perspective. There are many reasons some techs leave the industry yet they love working on cars. Jim says his facility is clean and organized and techs like to work in a facility like his. His advice to a start-up shop owner. Find your niche. It is not easy to do all makes and all models. Only two paths to fix a car: You have a code or you have a symptom. Shop Profile Number of locations: 1 Years in industry: 30 Years business ownership: 4 Number of technicians: 5 Number of service advisers: 1 Number of lifts: 5 Number of bays: 9 Days open: Mon – Fri Percent Repair vs Maintenance vs Other: 70% vs 30% Technician training hours per year: 20 Service adviser training hours per year: 8 Specialty: Technology throughout the shop is to aid in the repair process Platform specialization: European and Asian Personal Certifications: Automobile Service...
