Summary Unseasonably cold weather in Iowa. Dan Fillius and Justin Glisan discuss Iowa weather history Unseasonably cold weather set records in Iowa in September, with temperatures falling to 15°F at Sheldon and Sibley. Weather forecast and drought conditions in Iowa. Fog is expected to form easily in central Iowa due to cooling temperatures at night, with possible rain chances in the next few days. Northeastern Iowa is experiencing exceptional drought, with a pocket of dry conditions along the Minnesota-Wisconsin border. Justin Glisan mentions that 5% of stations in Iowa received anywhere from 300% to 400% of normal precipitation, leading to the removal of a Drought Designation. Dan Fillius discusses the importance of irrigation for farmers in northeast Iowa, as the days are shortening and the growing season is limited. Spotted lantern fly infestation and Dan Fillius asks Justin Glisan about the potential spread of the spotted lantern fly from neighboring states, given its recent appearance in the South Chicago area. Justin Glisan is unsure of the migratory pattern of the spotted lantern fly, but notes that it is a concern for grape growers in the area. Dan Fillius and Justin Glisan discuss the potential impact of the US government shutdown on National Weather Service forecasters and hydrologists, who are considered essential workers. Despite the shutdown, the forecasts and modeling will continue, and the National Weather Service employees will do their essential duties to protect life and property, even if they don't get paid for it until later. Field scouting for drought monitoring and historical climate data. Justin Glisan describes his field scouting process, including matching up hydrological data with farmers' concerns to provide a more accurate drought picture. Glisan's field scouting helps him understand the longer-term implications of drought on crops and informs his work with the US Drought Monitor. Dan Fillius and Justin Glisan discuss the importance of farmers' observations and written records in understanding long-term drought patterns and their impact on agriculture. Farmers' personal accounts and notes on barn doors and in sheds provide valuable insights into the history of drought in a particular area, offering a "climatology of their own farm." Weather patterns and farming practices. Justin Glisan discusses Amish farmer's folklore about the last three days of summer predicting winter weather. Justin and Dan discuss February weather patterns, with a focus on El Niño forecasts and recent snowfall history in certain areas.

Dairy farmers around the region are facing an oversaturated market. It's been made worse for some farmers in the region when the Metropolitan Council temporarily cut off sewer service to the Hastings Creamery, after the company was notified of six violations of industrial waste permits including a recent leak of milk into the city's sewer system. Now the creamery is hauling wastewater to a plant in St. Paul. The situation is affecting about 45 dairy farmers in Minnesota and Wisconsin. Minnesota Milk Producers Association Executive Director Lucas Sjostrom joined MPR News host Cathy Wurzer to talk about it.
-Every B1G school but Indiana had a player drafted this year, but Nebraska was 3rd to last with 2 players (Ochaun Mathis and Trey Palmer, both in the 6th round); and Rutgers, who had 1 player drafted -Michigan led the way in the B1G with 9 players drafted, and Ohio State/Penn State both had 6 players drafted. In the West, Purdue (who won the division) had 5 players drafted, followed by Iowa, Northwestern (!) and Illinois with 4 players; and Minnesota/Wisconsin with 3 -Also, it's not only the fact that Nebraska had only 2 players drafted; it's that they were late Day 3 picks. As Sip says, no All-Americans is a problem and has been for Nebraska on the field -Is it better to sign with a team as an undrafted free agent versus being a seventh-round pick? -Garrett Nelson signed with Miami and had 11 other offers from different NFL teams -Seeing all of the talented players that signed as undrafted free agents, it reminds us of how difficult it is to get drafted. Deuce Vaughn is a great example of this -With the conclusion of the 2023 NFL Draft, Georgia now has all of their 2021 defense drafted -Even with the recent struggles, Nebraska is still in the top 10 for all-time draft picks Show sponsored by GANA TRUCKINGAdvertising Inquiries: https://redcircle.com/brandsPrivacy & Opt-Out: https://redcircle.com/privacy

During a season of loneliness or a hard circumstance have you ever wished someone would just send you a card or note to boost your day? In episode 33: Adopt-A-Grandparent, guest Hillary Kline shares how she recently started a passion project called, "Adopt-A-Grandparent." The program is meant to help lonely seniors, many of who must socially distance and cannot necessarily visit loved ones during the pandemic. The project has taken off, with more than 1,000 cards/letters/pieces of artwork from across the globe delivered to Minnesota/Wisconsin nursing homes and assisted living facilities. Don't live in Minnesota or Wisconsin? That's OK, you don't need to to help the movement grow. How can you or your family get involved? Start writing cards, letter or make a piece of artwork. Include your address in the card if you would like to possibly build a pen-pal relationship. (There is no guarantee, but it's a possibility.) Bring this idea to your group or event. The more people involved the more joy and love will be shared. So, get your MOPS Group, book club, church small group or family gathering involved in Adopt-A-Grandparent. Send those cards, letters and artwork to Hillary Kline at PO Box 28244 Crystal, MN 55428. Please make sure you have the right amount of postage when sending. We don't want to add any extra cost onto Hillary. If you feel led to sponsor the movement, you can also send a donation to Hillary at the above address. Hillary also shares about encouragement in tough times and what has helped her. She quotes Maya Angelou, "Try to be a rainbow in someone's cloud." Learn how to turn your heart and practice empathy and compassion, connecting to the people around you in a meaningful way. One card, letter or artwork can be a rainbow in a cloud So, let's join the movement of Adopt-A-Grandparent! Get to know guest Hillary Kline: Hillary Kline is a beauty and lifestyle TV expert, PR professional, social media influencer and an award-winning event personality based in Minneapolis. Whether she's interviewing A-listers on the red carpet at a star-studded event, interacting with fans at professional sporting events, recommending her favorite products or giving tips on lifestyle television shows across the country, she keeps the action flowing and the audience smiling. Hillary's work has appeared in The New York Times, Marie Claire, Forbes, Bravo, Reader's Digest, Huffington Post, BuzzFeed and more. Angela Norlien is a full-time medical transcriptionist/healthcare documentation specialist and mother of six who works from home on the night shift for a medical clinic. April and Angela actually worked together on the overnight and weekend shifts and became close friends, virtually, even before they met each other in person. They talk about ditching the commute, what it was like working with infants, clocking in as hourly employees, and staying awake on long overnight shifts. Angela shares about how she got into medical transcription and what it's like to work in an shrinking field as the methods for producing a medical record have changed over time. Angela also talks about how she decided to work from home and how it's made it possible to raise their children with little to no outside childcare over the last 14 years, given that she and her husband have chosen to work opposite shifts. They live with their family near the Minnesota/Wisconsin border in Southeastern Minnesota and are involved in their community with their schools, Girl Scouts, and plenty of outdoor activities. ***** Can't listen right now? In a stunning first for the Shutdown Fullcast, we spend 21 STRAIGHT MINUTES at the top of the show talking about a football game: LSU-A&M, which went to 7 overtimes, made for a bunch of silly numbers, and, oh yeah, gave us some real ill-advised fighting at the end of it. Other topics include! 7:04 - A brief digression to talk about French Stewart and his origins 22:20 - Egg Bowl scrappin’ featuring Wright Thompson reading play by play 26:09 - The Godfrey/Jason Arizona Chicken Bet reaches its fateful conclusion 30:13 - The freezing, bitter disappointment that was the Apple Cup 32:41 - Spencer and Ryan connect over the most painful game of Rivalry Week 36:15 - We don’t even stay on Ohio State/Michigan for a minute before getting distracted by Minnesota/Wisconsin, this podcast is well-organized and good 39:56 - Wake Forest-Duke: The Nerd Battle For Control Of Hell 45:06 - ***ALERT*** UConn Football Discussion ***Alert*** 52:05 - Pitt’s superweapon continues to charge 60:10 - The non-coaching change that we care most about
We’re headed out to Wisconsin and we’re gonna talk to Zach Haas. And Zach’s with Wisconsin Lake and Pond Resources. http://www.wisconsinlpr.com/ Zach, welcome to the show. Wisconsin Lake and Pond Resources Yup. Glad to be here. Zach and I have been talking about water. What’s so special about water? Well, the Earth is made up of water, human beings are made up of water, and the deer we hunt are made up of water and need water, as we do, to survive. So having said that, Zach is a Senior Aquatic Biologist. He knows his stuff and I’m so glad that John O’Brien from Grandpa Ray Outdoors gave me a shout out. Said, “Hey man, get Zach on because he knows something about water.” Which I don’t. You know, I’ve been fortunate enough to hunt places where there’s plenty of water and it wasn’t an issue. Well, it might be on your property and so that’s why Zach’s here today. Zach, tell us about why water is important for a healthy whitetail herd. Yup. So I’ll start with the basics and kind of get crazy, and I might nerd out here a little bit on water. So the basics. What does everything living need? It needs food, cover, and water. And water is the most overlooked thing on most property and most properties don’t have water. Especially if you get out of areas like Minnesota-Wisconsin. We have a lot of water. When you start getting in areas like Kansas, Iowa, South Dakota, you start getting into areas that don’t have a lot of fresh water, you’re starting to actually see less successes in that way. You know, so whenever you get water on properties the goal is to get them that third element that they all need. Right? You know, it’s just a matter of you give them that element, now it’s a matter of making it the right element and the way I bring that up is there’s a lot of bad water out there. Possibly the biggest thing that’s striking most, actually, of the country. You go to the Dakotas, out west, Iowa, we have EHD issues. Now that stems from poor water quality. You know, so obviously the EHD midge loves poor water quality. So our goal is to show land managers, show hunters, show conservationists how do I get the right healthy water. You know, so that’s my goal here. That’s kind of where out of my work more recently because being a big hunter, it’s been a passion that’s a good combination for me.
The Take Ten's coverage of the BTN Bus Tour heads west, with interviews from Iowa (LB Ben Niemann, 1:50), Nebraska (WR Stanley Morgan, 22:18), Minnesota (DL Winston DeLattiboudere, 38:46) and Wisconsin(LB Chris Orr, 57:40).
In this episode we’ll be discussing Chinese Takeovers, Minnesota Wisconsin beer wars, and Brewin’ USA.
Our pre-Thanksgiving Day football preview show returns tonight! AXE WEEK/HATE WEEK has begun for the Wisconsin Badgers and Minnesota Golden Gophers, and with some controversy! Paul Bunyan's Axe will NOT be on the sideline but presented afterward and staged near the goalpost of the winning team. What are your thoughts on this? We'll break down the match-ups and give our predictions for the game -- which has the Big Ten West division championship ON THE LINE! Will Melvin Gordon continue his Heisman Trophy campaign? Can Wisconsin stop a hot Minnesota team that comes off the heels of upsetting Nebraska at home? The Green Bay Packers play their toughest game to date against the New England Patriots. Can Aaron Rodgers and Company beat the best team in the NFL at Lambeau Field Sunday afternoon?
