Charlie Parker was punk rock before there was punk rock. His bebop was underground music: subversive, intellectual, and a major departure from popular music of the day (think: Nat King Cole, The Andrews Sisters, Perry Como). He was an intellectual heavyweight, nearly untouchable in his technical ability and pushing music to places no one else was daring to go. So where did Charlie Parker with Strings, his most accessible album, come from? It's not Bird going commercial, like some have claimed. Charlie Parker with Strings is an album he fought to make. He loved Bach and Stravinsky (even quoting the opening of Stravinsky's 'Firebird Suite' mid-solo in one legendary performance), and had longed to make a record where his jazz saxophone was accompanied by strings. The resulting record is music's greatest improviser at his best. Jazz pianists Peter Martin and Adam Maness listen to select tracks (like "Just Friends" and "Summertime"), breaking down the theory behind the music to understand what makes this album great. Jazz is the foundation of the most GENIUS music in recent history: Stevie Wonder, Michael Jackson, Joni Mitchell, D'Angelo. In this popular music series, You'll Hear It, Adam and Peter break down the greatest albums of all time. These seasoned jazz pianists bring their deep musical knowledge to every joyful episode to help you hear the hidden qualities that make music AMAZING. You'll never hear music the same way again.Like the jam at the end of the show? For nearly seventeen years, we've followed the ever-evolving journey of bassist Cheikh Ndoye, watching with admiration as his musical vision continues to deepen and expand. Each project has revealed a restless curiosity and a commitment to sound that resists easy categorization. When we last spoke in 2018, Ndoye was already hinting at new directions, and he hasn't slowed down since. In the years that followed, he's been quietly and intensely at work, culminating in a new album, Genetic Tones, a project that captures both his roots and his forward-looking approach to music.I recently had the great pleasure of listening to several rough tracks from the album, and, as always, I was both impressed and genuinely excited by what I heard. Genetic Tones feels like a bold and thoughtful statement, rich in texture and intention. Join me as Cheikh shares insights into the making of this upcoming release and reflects on the ways his musical language has continued to transform over the years. This interview first appeared in Bass Musician Magazine in February 2026Go to jazzguitartoday.com and bassmusicianmagazine.com more interviews and lessons.

One of the Moms and Their Music hosts sits down with Tianna for a real, unfiltered mom-to-mom conversation rooted in the music that shaped us and the lives we're building now. What starts as a discussion about playlists and nostalgia quickly turns into something deeper; motherhood, growth, and the moments that connect us long after the songs fade out. This episode brings back the original MATM energy: honest stories, unexpected laughter, and the kind of conversation that feels more like sitting in a living room than recording a podcast. There's a light nod to an emo-girl era that may or may not still exist somewhere in our playlists, but at its heart, this is a story about real moms, real experiences, and the music that carries us through every season.Link to YouTube Playlist: https://youtube.com/playlist?list=PLwnGrdjqohPJIJeF7513msLqvY_sBRVNQ&si=Ladnkh-5VwOO81vvSend a textThe Classic MATM intro the sound that tells you, we're coming back from or going to break/ad ok byyyyeee Support the show

For our february episode we finally complete the 70s by discussing our favourite songs of 1974! You can expect lots of prog, much more krautrock than expected (particularly from Tracey), some funk classics, sparkly glam bangers, and most of the members of The Byrds. We've each chosen our 10 favourite songs of the year and sent them over to Colin's wife Helen, who put the playlists together and distributed them so we were each given a playlist of the 20 songs from the other two hosts, along with our own 10. We then ranked the playlists in order of preference and sent them back to Helen, who totalled up the points and worked out the order. She also joined us on the episode to read out the countdown, which we found out as we recorded so all reactions are genuine. Now, admittedly, in parts we're a little bit brutal to some of the songs in the list as we're three separate people with differing music tastes, but please remember that to be in this episode at all the songs have to have been in one of our top 10's of that year.Bands featured in this episode include (In alphabetical order, no spoilers here!) - Kevin Ayers, Big Star, David Bowie, James Brown, Captain Beefheart & The Magic Band, Gene Clark, Cluster, Deep Purple, Brian Eno, Focus, Fred Frith, Harmonia, Keith Hudson, King Crimson, Kiss, Kraftwerk, Lynyrd Skynyrd, Curtis Mayfield, Roger McGuinn, Mike Oldfield, Parliament, Gram Parsons, Pilot, Queen, Roxy Music, The Sensational Alex Harvey Band, Sparks, Steely Dan, Tangerine Dream, & Rick Wakeman.Find all songs in alphabetical order here - https://open.spotify.com/playlist/5DIrU8fLeTxerh4wHJTWDq?si=6e2bfca9066b44e2Find our We Dig Music Pollwinners Party playlist (featuring all of the winning songs up until now) here - https://open.spotify.com/playlist/45zfDHo8zm6VqrvoEQSt3z?si=Ivt0oMj6SmitimvumYfFrQIf you want to listen to megalength playlists of all the songs we've individually picked since we started doing best of the year episodes (which need updating but I plan on doing them over the next few months or so), you can listen to Colin's here – https://open.spotify.com/playlist/5x3Vy5Jry2IxG9JNOtabRT?si=HhcVKRCtRhWCK1KucyrDdgIan's here - https://open.spotify.com/playlist/2H0hnxe6WX50QNQdlfRH5T?si=XmEjnRqISNqDwi30p1uLqAand Tracey's here - https://open.spotify.com/playlist/2p3K0n8dKhjHb2nKBSYnKi?si=7a-cyDvSSuugdV1m5md9NwThe playlist of 20 songs from the other two hosts was scored as usual, our favourite song got 20 points, counting down incrementally to our least favourite which got 1 point. The scoring of our own list of 10 is now slightly more complicated in order to give a truer level of points to our own favourites. So rather than them only being able to score as many points as our 10th favourite in the other list, the points in our own list were distributed as follows -1st place - 20 points2nd place - 18 points3rd place – 16 points4th place – 14 points5th place – 12 points6th place – 9 points7th place – 7 points8th place – 5 points9th place – 3 points10th place -1 pointHosts - Ian Clarke, Colin Jackson-Brown & Tracey BGuest starring Helen Jackson-Brown.Playlist compiling/distributing – Helen Jackson-BrownRecorded/Edited/Mixed/Original Music by Colin Jackson-Brown for We Dig PodcastsThanks to Peter Latimer for help with the scoring system.Part of the We Dig Podcasts network along with Free With This Months Issue & Pick A Disc.Bluesky - https://bsky.app/profile/wedigmusic.bsky.socialInstagram - https://www.instagram.com/wedigmusicpcast/Facebook - https://www.facebook.com/wedigpusicpcast/Find our other episodes & podcasts at www.wedigpodcasts.com

This week on 1001 Songs That Make You Want To Die, we take aim at Lips Are Movin by Megan Trainor — a song that somehow convinced the world it was quirky, empowering, and not just the same chorus shouted at us for three straight minutes. We break down how this track rode the post-All About That Bass wave, why the lyrics make absolutely no sense if you think about them for more than five seconds, and how Trainor built an entire pop empire on retro vibes and lyrical confidence that may or may not be earned. There's production chat, pop culture context, questionable messaging, and the important stuff — like whether Megan Trainor could beat one of our hosts in a fight. Was this song harmless fun, or a crime against radio listeners everywhere?Press play and let us complain properly.DUBBY DUBBY is declaring WAR on big Energy! Did your parents make you listen to Kidz Bop CDs back in the day? If so, we apologize for inadvertently triggering your childhood trauma. For everyone else, let's admire all the ways this seemingly innocent brand manages to embarrass itself over and over. From horrendous production to inexplicable lyric changes to a litany of ill-advised spinoffs and marketing gimmicks, Kidz Bop is living proof that sometimes the solution is worse than the original problem...NOTE: We recorded this episode a couple days after the ICE shooting of Alex Pretti, which kind of fucked with our heads as you can tell. Also Nick had a cold which is why you can hear him coughing at several points. Want to request a song? Tell us your rating? Send us a Text Message right now! In this episode of 1001 Songs That Make You Want To Die, we take on WHERE IS MY HUSBAND by RAYE — a song that somehow manages to be chaotic, catchy, and deeply unhinged all at once. We unpack the vocal acrobatics, the theatre-kid energy, and the lyrical panic of a woman sprinting through emotional traffic with zero plan and maximum confidence. Along the way, we ask the important questions: is this genius, is this annoying, or is it both at the same time? Plus, a brutally honest breakdown of the song's backstory, production choices, cultural context, and the inevitable question that defines the show — does this track earn its place on the list, or is it getting off lightly? DUBBY DUBBY is declaring WAR on big Energy! NEW music! PART TWOOur in-depth conversation with Alexa Ray JoelABOUT ALEXA RAY JOELSinger, songwriter, and pianist Alexa Ray Joel released her debut EP Sketches in 2006 and has since released a series of singles, including the most recent, “Heavy Eyes.” The daughter of legendary singer-songwriter Billy Joel and supermodel and actress Christie Brinkley, Alexa Ray began writing songs as a teenager. Her performances at Café Carlyle have showcased her eclectic repertoire, including original songs, Broadway numbers, and nods to her father and Ray Charles, for whom she was named. The New York Times praised her as a “singer confidently following her heart.” She has been a part of The Gap's “Back to Blue” television ad campaign, and has ventured into the fashion world, appearing on magazine covers and participating in fashion weeks. She sang alongside her father in the final year of his Madison Square Garden residency in 2024 and says her favorite Billy Joel song is “Lullaby (Goodnight, My Angel),” which he wrote for her. Alexa Ray's “Heavy Eyes” follows on the heels of “Riverside Way,” which illustrates the sonic diversity of her music and is leading up to the release of a 5 song EP later this year. Carole King's Tapestry is so cozy, you'll want to hug it; sit with it. It sounds simple, warm, and totally unassuming. But it's way more impressive than it seems at first.Adam and Peter break down what's actually going on beneath the surface of Tapestry ... and what most people miss. Carole King was already an elite songwriter long before this album. You know Aretha Franklin's “(You Make Me Feel Like) A Natural Woman”? Carole wrote that. “Will You Love Me Tomorrow” by The Shirelles? She wrote that, too. When she was just 17! Listen closely and you hear it everywhere: in the chord choices, in the way the she actually PLAYS the piano instead of just accompanying her vocals, and in the way her melodies and lyrics lock together so naturally you barely notice how intentional it all is. Add in that soulful, sweet voice, and you start to understand how this unassuming record became a chart-topping, Grammy-dominating classic when it came out in 1971.Tapestry sounds easy, but it's not.
