Indie troubadour and Rolling Stone darling Brian Dunne gets real about his work as a songwriter who take the craft seriously. PART ONE:  Paul and Scott talk about the Earth, Wind & Fire documentary, musical gibberish, Michael Jackson's lyrical theft, Scott's Cameroonian music phase, and perhaps the most irritating song mashup of all time. PART TWO: Our in-depth conversation with Brian DunneABOUT BRYAN DUNNE Brian Dunne is a New York–based singer-songwriter whose sharp storytelling, dark humor, and blue-collar perspective have earned him a devoted following in the Americana and indie-rock worlds. A longtime fixture on the East Coast club circuit, Dunne built his career the old-fashioned way—by writing songs, touring relentlessly, and cultivating a fiercely independent DIY approach. Over the course of multiple solo albums, including Selling Things in 2020, Loser on the Ropes in 2023, and Clams Casino in 2025, he has developed a reputation for pairing deeply human observations with memorable, hook-filled songs that draw from the traditions of artists such as Bruce Springsteen, Tom Petty, and Billy Joel while maintaining a distinctly modern voice. Dunne's profile expanded internationally when his 2021 single “New Tattoo” became an unexpected hit in the Netherlands, and in 2022 he co-founded the acclaimed folk-rock collective Fantastic Cat alongside fellow songwriters Anthony D'Amato, Don DiLego, and Mike Montali. Dunne continues to balance his solo career with Fantastic Cat, earning praise for songs that explore failure, resilience, class, ambition, and the everyday struggles of modern life with equal parts wit, empathy, and heart. His work has attracted praise from Rolling Stone, where writer Joseph Hudak championed his 2025 album Clams Casino and later singled it out as his favorite album of the year. It has been described as if novelist Sam Lipsyte wrote the lyrics for Billy Joel's Glass Houses, or if the Jason Isbell of Southeastern cut his teeth in scuzzy NYC rock clubs. What does it mean to be the eldest daughter? In this episode of Moms and Their Music, we explore the unique experience of growing up as the firstborn daughter and the expectations that often come with that role. From responsibility and leadership to sibling dynamics, people-pleasing tendencies, and the pressure to "set the example," we discuss how being the eldest daughter can shape both childhood and adulthood in ways that are often overlooked. We also chat for a while about what it's like to raise an eldest daughter.Whether you're an eldest daughter yourself, raising one, married to one, or still recovering from being told "you're the oldest" every time something went wrong, this episode is for you.We laugh our way through sibling dynamics, unrealistic expectations, responsibility that somehow gets assigned by birth order, and the strange phenomenon of eldest daughters becoming unofficial assistant managers of the family before they're even old enough to drive. As Moms and Their Music continues to grow, we're also entering a season of intentional development behind the scenes. We're exploring new ideas, refining how we connect with our audience, and laying the groundwork for exciting additions still to come.Thank you for being part of the journey. Show Notes What happens to creativity when every song, sound, and style is a thumb-tap away? Sam Young has spent more than two decades behind the decks in London, and his answer is blunt: originality is at an all-time low. As a DJ, producer, remixer, and founder of the record label WyldCard, he sits at the exact point where taste, technology, and commerce collide, and he sees a culture increasingly content to recycle what already works. Sean Martin and Sam Young dig into how algorithms quietly shape what listeners believe they like, and how that pressure reaches the dance floor. Sam Young draws a clear line between a club night, where a crowd shows up hungry for records it has never heard, and a private event, where the real skill is reading a host's taste from the handful of songs they send and still making the room move. The throughline is judgment, the human ear that no recommendation engine has learned to replace. The conversation turns to sampling, AI, and the difference between craft and shortcut. Sam Young runs A&R for WyldCard himself, listening to demos every week, and he can hear within seconds when a producer is chasing a trend instead of setting one. His distinction is sharp: taking something obscure and making it feel new is an art, while feeding a recognizable hook into a tool and printing one more cover version is not. He is candid about AI as a cheat code, and just as candid about a near future where producers simply talk to their software and ask for ten options. This is not a lament, though. Sam Young points to the rare artists who still cut through precisely because they refuse to sound like everyone else, and to a younger generation quietly rediscovering originality. The optimistic version of the story is the one Sean Martin keeps circling back to: technology at its best clears away the busywork so the mind stays in control of what gets made. The question this episode leaves open is whether the tools that make music easier to produce will widen the gap between the familiar and the genuinely new, or finally close it. On this episode of The Bandwich Tapes, I sit down with bassist Tim Lefebvre for a conversation about groove, adaptability, tone, and what it really means to serve the music. Tim has built one of the most distinctive and wide-ranging careers in modern bass playing, with credits spanning jazz, rock, pop, experimental music, and singer-songwriter projects. From David Bowie's Blackstar to Tedeschi Trucks Band, Wayne Krantz, and countless sessions in between, Tim has become one of those rare players whose sound is unmistakable yet fits almost anywhere. We begin by talking about his 2026 so far, which includes recording work, short touring runs, a date with Nate Smith and Jason Lindner, upcoming shows in Italy with Tiziano Ferro, and a tour with Melissa Etheridge. From there, we get into one of the central tensions of a working musician's life: how to bring your own identity to a project while still honoring the artist, the songs, and the original recordings. Tim has strong instincts here, and he speaks with great clarity about choosing simplicity, resisting overplaying, and understanding what the music actually needs. One of my favorite parts of this conversation is hearing Tim talk about some of the landmark experiences in his career. We discuss the Bryan Adams tour, the joy of playing huge songs in front of large crowds, and then spend time on David Bowie's Blackstar, including how Tim approached the sessions, how much of the rhythmic language was already implied in Bowie's demos, and how some of the bass textures on songs like “Lazarus” emerged naturally in the room. Tim also reflects on the creative freedom and trust inside Tedeschi Trucks Band, and what it felt like to be part of a band that could take real improvisational chances in front of thousands of people.Along the way, we talk gear, compression, pedals, picks, strings, remote recording, favorite drummers, the differences between New York and Los Angeles, sobriety, and some of the bass players who shaped his ear early on, including James Jamerson, Paul McCartney, Darryl Jones, Marcus Miller, Victor Bailey, Jaco Pastorius, and Tony Levin. This is a conversation about craft, but also about judgment, restraint, and learning to make the right choice in the moment.Key TakeawaysTim Lefebvre talks about balancing personal identity with the responsibility of serving the artist, the arrangement, and the song.He shares stories from the making of David Bowie's Blackstar, including how parts of “Lazarus” developed in the studio.Tim reflects on the musical and emotional intensity of playing with Tedeschi Trucks Band and the freedom that the group allowed onstage. He discusses his early path from saxophone to bass, his father's influence, and learning on real gigs at a young age.The conversation explores how bass playing varies with the drummer and what Tim listens for when locking in with someone new.Tim also gets into gear, including pick playing, flats versus rounds, bass compression, distortion, reverb, and how pedals can shape creative ideas. We talk openly about sobriety, professional growth, and how life experience changes the way a musician shows up on and off the bandstand.Music from the EpisodeAnyhow - Tedeschi Trucks BandShake Loose - Donny McCaslinIt's No Fun Not to Like Pop - Krantz/Carlock/LefebvreHanging On - KnowerBlackstar - David BowieAbout the PodcastThe Bandwich Tapes is a podcast where I sit down with musicians, songwriters, producers, and creative people for thoughtful conversations about craft, collaboration, career, and the experiences that shape a life in music. In this episode of Seeing Them Live, Charles sits down with Ben Daughtry and Jonathan Palmer of Love Jones — the Louisville-born, LA-based band that has been crafting their unique blend of lounge, soul, pop, and sharp-witted storytelling for over three decades. The conversation kicks off with a shared love of live music, as both Ben and Jonathan trace their concert-going roots back to the same unlikely starting point: Van Halen. Ben recalls sneaking into a show at 14, way too young to be there, watching a then-unknown Van Halen open for Black Sabbath and feeling like "a bomb going off." Jonathan recounts his own Van Halen baptism at Freedom Hall in Louisville on the Women and Children First Invasion Tour — complete with $7.50 festival seating and his mother taking notes in the stands. From there, the episode becomes a wide-ranging tour through decades of live music obsession. The guys swap stories about Ted Nugent crowd surges, jumping on stage with GWAR in New Orleans, playing congas with Tool at an early Lollapalooza, and watching Rage Against the Machine move 60,000 people. Jonathan shares privileged industry moments — seeing The Rolling Stones at a 600-capacity room in New York alongside Daniel Craig, Rachel Weisz, and Questlove, and catching Nine-Inch Nails at The Troubadour when they felt "too big for the building." The conversation is fueled by genuine enthusiasm, with each story triggering another in a kind of joyful avalanche of rock and roll memory. The second half of the episode turns to the band's own story — from their residency at Largo on Fairfax, where David Bowie once sat quietly in a booth and Tool's crew became regulars, to their unexpected appearance on The Tonight Show with Jimmy Fallon celebrating the 25th anniversary of their debut album Here's to the Losers. Charles and the guys dig into the Cocktail Nation moment of the '90s, the making of their new album The Greatest Show on Earth — written during COVID jam sessions in a Louisville warehouse with crickets chirping and trains passing — and the cinematic, Gil Evans-influenced sound that ties its six expansive tracks together. The episode closes with the band expressing hope to get back on the road, a shout-out to their partnership with Whiskey Thief Distillery, and a tease of possible activity around the 30th anniversary of the film Swingers, on whose soundtrack Love Jones famously appeared. BANDS: Adele, B-52s, Beastie Boys, Big Bad Voodoo Daddy, Black Sabbath, Chicago, Combustible Edison, Devo, Earth Wind & Fire, Fishbone, Foo Fighters, GWAR, James Brown, Led Zeppelin, Love Jones, Metallica, Metric, Molly Hatchet, Morphine, Nine Inch Nails, Oasis, Rage Against the Machine, Red Hot Chili Peppers, Rolling Stones, Sea and Cake, Steely Dan, Supertramp, Ted Nugent, The Cars, The Cocktails, Tool, Tortoise, Van Halen, ZZ Top. Rising hip hop influencer Cameron McCloud lets us in on his journey and his processPART ONE: Paul and Scott chat about a song that's getting a lot of hate online and consider how the internet has redefined how we hear music. PART TWO:  Our in-depth conversation with Cameron McCloudABOUT CAMERON McCLOUD Cure for Paranoia is the Dallas-based alternative hip hop collective fronted by Cameron McCloud. Crowned "Rap Group of the Year" by the Dallas Entertainment Awards in 2025 and "Artist of the Year" in 2026, the group's name came about following McCloud's diagnosis with bipolar depression and paranoid schizophrenia. Their breakthrough came when Erykah Badu's tapped them to perform at her birthday bash, and they have since shared bills with such artists as George Clinton, Nas, Ludacris, and Leon Bridges. The group was named NPR Tiny Desk Contest finalists three times in 2023, 2024, and 2025 before winning the contest in 2026. In addition to the success of their most recent EP, Work of Art, they've gained attention online thanks to Cameron's 2025 challenge to release an original verse every day on his social media channels. Tackling everything from mental health to social injustice, his rhymes earned a substantial following. Inspired by groups such as Outkast, The Roots, and a Tribe Called Quest, Cameron McCloud and Cure for Paranoia are rapidly gaining a major national audience.  Hosted by Simplecast, an AdsWizz company.
