These objects are thought to be a source of galactic cosmic rays, the origins of which are currently a mystery.Understanding how this microquasar works could also help researchers learn more about full-sized quasars — monstrous objects centred around supermassive black holes, which are too distant to study easily.Research Article: Alfaro et al.News and Views: High-altitude particle detector spots a second Galactic microquasar09:27 Research HighlightsThe comb jellies caught fusing their bodies, and an ancient burial site reveals that Classical accounts of Scythian culture appear to be true.Research Highlight: Two comb jellies fuse their bodies and then act as oneResearch Highlight: Evidence of dead people posed on dead horses found in ancient tomb12:08 A ‘smart' insulin-molecule that could lower hypoglycaemia riskResearchers have developed a modified insulin-molecule that varies its level of activity depending on blood-glucose levels. It's hoped that this ‘smart' insulin could one day help those with diabetes regulate their blood sugar more easily. Many people with diabetes rely on regular insulin injections, but because blood-sugar levels can be difficult to predict it can be hard to select the correct dose. This can lead to hypoglycaemia — a life-threateningly low level of glucose. To overcome this, a team created a modified form of insulin with a switch that activates the molecule when glucose levels are high, and deactivates it when levels are low. This insulin-molecule was effective at maintaining correct blood glucose in animal models, and may eventually help lessen diabetes-related complications in humans.Research Article: Hoeg-Jensen et al.News and Views: Smart insulin switches itself off in response to low blood sugar20:33 Briefing ChatAncient DNA confirms that infamous lions hunted humans and a variety of game, and a new technique can sequence a cell's DNA and pinpoint its proteins, without cracking it open.Nature: Famed lions' full diet revealed by DNA — and humans were among their preyNature: ‘Phenomenal' tool sequences DNA and tracks proteins — without cracking cells open Hosted on Acast. #220When you're asleep, you're completely dead to the world, right? Well, it turns out we can actually communicate with people while they're sleeping and even get them to smile or frown on command – at least some of the time., Why this window into the sleeping brain could have important implications for treating people with certain sleep-related health conditions, or even better insights into why and how we dream. In space, scientists have discovered the source of the largest ever recorded marsquake, which rattled the red planet last year. Unlike other quakes on Mars, which does not have plate tectonics to explain seismic events, this one was not the result of an asteroid impact. And the oldest fast radio burst ever detected shocks researchers – a blast with power enough to microwave a bowl of popcorn twice the size of our Sun. What both these events can tell us about unearthly environments. As a record bird flu outbreak continues to devastate bird populations across the globe, we've got a surprising finding about its origins. Unlike previous outbreaks, the virus currently circulating originated in Europe and Africa, not Asia. Why this geographical shift? And how can knowing its origins help prevent future outbreaks? The world's best known particle accelerator, the Large Hadron Collider at CERN, is the largest machine on the planet. But it turns out particle accelerators don't need to be so big. Scientists have made a truly miniature accelerator, so small it could fit into a pen tip, which could have hugely practical benefits for medical care. Plus: How to reduce the energy footprint of massive data centres, why hitting ‘snooze' on your alarm clock may not actually be a bad thing and how dung beetles can help us keep track of highly endangered lemurs. And if you want one final chance to win a free copy of Rob Eastaway's Headscratchers, email your guess for this week's puzzle to podcasts@newscientist.com, or send a voice message to hear yourself on the show.Hosts Timothy Revell and Christie Taylor discuss all of this with guests Clare Wilson, Alex Wilkins, Grace Wade and Karmela Padavic-Callaghan. A particle accelerator is something that scientists use to study the behavior of particles and conduct physics experiments. These machines use an electromagnetic field to make tiny particles move at practically the speed of light: a whopping 186,000 miles per second! So, yeah, a guy stuck his head in one of those… and actually survived! The incident happened in Russia on July 13, 1978. Anatoli Bugorski was a researcher at the Institute for High Energy Physics and worked with the U-70 Synchrotron, the biggest Soviet atom smasher of the time. On that unfortunate day, the scientist was trying to figure out why a piece of the equipment wasn't working as it should. As he was leaning over the machine, the safety mechanism failed at the worst possible moment. It turned out that the scientist's head was right in the path of a powerful proton beam moving at the speed of light. You ready to hear all about it? Then watch the video! Building on last week, Will Barlow continues to describe and analyze issues with the Big Bang Theory. He considers standard biblical and scientific objections brought forward by young earth creationists. After responding to these objections, he shows how each of the main Christian views of origins deals with the Big Bang. Listen to this episode on Spotify or Apple Podcasts https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yonfcv5mf6I&feature=emb_imp_woyt The Big Bang In basic terms, what does the Big Bang theory say? • The Universe began approximately 13.7 billion years ago• Space and matter have been expanding and cooling since then What is the current state of the Big Bang? • We will never be able to travel back in time to observe the beginning• Physicists used high-energy collisions to test hypotheses related to the Big Bang• There is a physical restriction on understanding the first moment of the Big Bang Are there viable alternatives to the Big Bang? • Oscillating universe — Universes expand and contract until the right one pops out• Multiple Universes — Infinite number of Universes exist beyond our ability to observe them• Inflationary models• Hawking's theory YEC and the Big Bang How does YEC view the Big Bang? • In short, YEC reject several aspects of the Big Bang• YEC make both Scriptural and scientific arguments to defend their positionScriptural Objections What objections do YEC make about the Big Bang from Scripture?“The Bible tells us that God created heaven, earth, and everything within them in the span of six days (Exodus 20:11) and rested on the seventh day. This is the basis for our work week (Exodus 20:8). In contrast, the big bang model claims that the universe and earth formed over billions of years.” “Genesis tells us that God created the stars on the fourth day—three days after the earth was created. In contrast, the big bang model claims that stars existed billions of years before the earth.” “The Bible tells us that the earth was made from water (2 Peter 3:5; Genesis 1:2–9; Psalm 24:2), but the standard secular model teaches that the earth began as a molten planet which cooled over millions of years, and that the oceans were the result of asteroid or meteor impacts, or from dissolution of comets as they entered earth's atmosphere.” Scientific Objections What objections do YEC make about the Big Bang from science?Missing Monopoles: The Big Bang should have produced massive particles with only one charge (either positive or negative) Too Little Antimatter: The Big Bang should have produced equal amounts of matter and antimatter, but instead, slightly more matter than antimatter exists. No Population III Stars: The Big Bang should have produced only hydrogen, helium, and lithium. These theoretically combined to form the first stars, but we can't find any. No Evidence for Inflation: One problem with the cosmic microwave background radiation is that it appears to have reached an impossible thermal equilibrium. Inflation theories have been proposed to solve this but there's no evidence for rapid early inflation. Scientific Objections How do YEC explain the distant light reaching us? • Exponential decay of the speed of light• Used historical sources cataloguing the speed of light• Propose that light reached its final speed in 1960 Answering YEC Scriptural Objections Creation in six 24-hour days, not 13.7 billion years • Day-Age: Each day could be longer• Gap: 13.7 billion years between vs. 1 and 2• Walton: ANE people not interested in physical creation Creation of Earth before Sun • Day-Age: Perspective of Earth observer• Gap: Reconstitution of Sun on day 4, could be function/purpose oriented• Walton: Creation is function oriented Earth made from water • Day-Age: This is not meant to be a physical description• Gap: Reconstitution of Sun on day 4, could be function/purpose oriented• Walton: Fits ANE understanding of the world Missing monopoles and CMBR problems • Rapid early inflation would dilute the monopoles, making them harder for us to observe• This also solves the cosmic microwave background radiation problem Too little antimatter • This actually just refutes an atheistic Big Bang model• OEC believe that God's hand guided creation, so this result is what a OEC would expect to see No population III stars • Actually, scientists have found metal-light stars already (at the far edge of what we can observe) - one generation removed from population III• Just because we haven't observed something does not mean that it doesn't exist “Appearance of Age” and the Big Bang • The “Appearance of Age” YEC view will agree with the scientific evidence• They will say that God is testing us to choose between His Word and science• The Day-Age view will agree with the scientific evidence for the Big Bang• Schroeder's model actually uses the Big Bang and general relativity Gap Theory and the Big Bang • The Gap Theory view will agree with the scientific evidence for the Big Bang• No reason to argue against the scientific evidence when a long time could have elapsed between Genesis 1:1 and 1:2 Non-Literal Views and the Big Bang • Collins will agree with the scientific evidence for the Big Bang• Walton's Temple view does not even think about modern cosmology, so he doesn't really care Choices • Attack the scientific evidence for the Big Bang and hold a YEC view• Accept the scientific evidence for the Big Bang and hold an OEC view• Attack or accept the scientific evidence and hold a non-literal view
