The Cinematography Podcast Episode 335: Jess Hall Cinematographer Jess Hall, ASC, BSC reunited with director Matt Shakman to bring the retro-future world of The Fantastic Four: First Steps to life. The two had collaborated on several projects together, such as Marvel's Wandavision. “I have a lot of faith in Matt Shakman,” says Jess. “I went into it with a lot of goodwill behind me. I was very aware that this was one of the original Marvel, it is the first family of Marvel, so I took that responsibility very seriously. I got very well prepared and I made sure that I was making choices that I thought would bring success to the project as well as tell the story that Matt wanted to tell.” Fantastic Four: First Steps required a higher level of pre-production planning than most, involving intense collaboration with the special effects team and production design. Many complicated sequences were prevised to meticulously establish the intended 1960s aesthetic. Jess achieved this period look through his lighting, camerawork, and lens choices. For the majority of the cinematography, he chose the relatively new Panavision Ultra Panatar II lenses, which coved the IMAX camera and were customized to his specifications. He also used a 16mm camera and Hasselblad lenses for some of the newsreel sequences. Color was crucial for establishing the 1960s aesthetic, and Jess infused it with a comic book vibrancy. He was inspired by a 1968 Fantastic Four comic book, creating a unified color palette for the LUT that featured blue, green, orange, and pale blue. Complex lighting setups were essential, incorporating miniatures, bluescreens, blackscreens, and motion capture performances. Jess opted for tungsten lights on Mr. Fantastic's (Pedro Pascal) lab set—a deliberate, retro choice that grounds the technology in the past. He found controlling the light challenging on bluescreen and blackscreen stages, as the lack of background required him to carefully conceive and control the light sources to maintain a sense of photorealistic depth. The production team prioritized creating as much of the film practically as possible to achieve the photoreal look director Matt Shakman wanted, with characters and scenes enhanced with VFX in post. Both Ben Grimm “The Thing” (Ebon Moss-Bachrach) and the Silver Surfer (Julia Garner) performed in motion capture suits. Rather than working on a volume stage, blue screens and black screens were used for the space sequences. A miniature scale model of the Fantastic Four's ship helped bring it to life, while a realistic 1960's Times Square set was built for the New York action sequences. For the planet-eater Galactus, Jess had a unique practical concept: treating him like a miniature. An extremely detailed costume was constructed, and Galactus moved through a small-scale set. Jess used specialized lighting and camerawork on his suit to create the illusion of the villain's immense, terrifying size. Es gibt eine bedenkliche Verbindung zwischen „Eddington“, „One Battle After Another“ und „After The Hunt“. Mehr dazu von Wolfgang M. Schmitt in der Filmanalyse! Writer/director Ari Aster's Eddington is now available to watch on HBO Max. We caught it in theaters back in July, and we'll tell you all about our experience. We knew after Beau Is Afraid (2023) that we were in for a wild ride, and we were correct in that assumption. Only a trickster provocateur like Ari Aster would have the gall to make a 150-minute set during the 2020 COVID-19 pandemic! For many people, the trauma of that period is too soon, but not for the Lodgecast. The movie features an excellent cast led by Joaquin Phoenix as a sheriff in small town Eddington, New Mexico, along with Pedro Pascal, Luke Grimes, Deirdre O'Connell, Micheal Ward, Austin Butler, and Emma Stone. Put your masks on and stay six feet apart as you listen to our take on Ari Aster's Eddington!
Entä mikä on paras Ari Aster leffa?

Josh and Jade review the 2025 Marvel film, Fantastic Four: First Steps. In this episode, they break down everything from the film's 1960s retro-futurism aesthetic to why Vanessa Kirby's performance as Sue Storm seems to rely on two facial expressions. The film has a star-studded cast, which includes Pedro Pascal as Reed Richards, Vanessa Kirby as Sue Storm, Joseph Quinn as Johnny Storm, and Ebon Moss-Bachrach as Ben Grimm. Directed by Matt Shakman and written by Josh Friedman, the movie leans heavily into Cold War era optimism, chrome-plated gadgetry, and bold pastel palettes that make the whole thing feel like a lost episode of The Jetsons with superheroes. If you love superhero movies with style, camp, and a film not overly connected to the web of Marvel films, this is one episode you won't want to miss.
"Hollywood was swarming with gay people."You know how Pedro Pascal hasn't come out yet? Well: this episode will explain why.Between the 1930s and 1960s, the Hays Code banned “sexual perversion” of all kinds from the silver screen, which (spoiler alert) meant queers. That has bequeathed us a predominantly homophobic industry in Hollywood, even if the stars and culture have always been decidedly – how do you say? – VERY GAY.This week we dive into the queerness of Hollywood's first Golden Age.We cover:The pre-Code era archetypes of pansies, sissies, butches, and sapphics, oh my!The Code's first filmic victim: a 1936 adaptation of Lillian Hellman's thesbian stage classic The Children's HourHitchcock's Rope, featuring two fascist dandy murderers whose day jobs included playing the piano and being fantastically richThe legacy of homophobia and queer desire in post-Code films up to the presentThis week, Bash is joined by film critic and filmmaker, Michael Koresky, who is the recent author of Sick and Dirty: Hollywood's Gay Golden Age and the Making of Modern Queerness — a love letter to the sly, coded, and deeply horny films that the uptight, antisemitic, racist, homophobic, Catholic censors forced out of the era's greatest artists.Hollywood was always swarming with queers, as Michael puts it, but people weren't naïve or stupid. We saw the signs – and we shot each other furtive glances as we hid our brain-boners...

Plus, we'll talk about that shocking mid-credits scene and what it means for the future of the MCU, including Spider-Man: Brand New Day. Join us as we herald the end . . . or is it the beginning?
Happy Spooky Wednesday, Folks! It is the second week of Urban Legends October, and Brittany is taking us all the way to Guatemala with the legend of El Sombrerón. This short boogeyman works his magic with a really big hat and a really shiny guitar to hypnotize young women. If you fall under his spell, would you have the strength to resist his siren song, or would you need your very own Pedro Pascal to rescue you?
Episode 96: Eddington This week on Philosophy in Film, the gang rides into the dust and disinformation of Ari Aster's 2025 neo-Western Eddington. Set during the upheaval of 2020, the film pits Joaquin Phoenix's stoic, conspiracy-prone sheriff Joe Cross against Pedro Pascal's pragmatic mayor Ted Garcia in a small New Mexico town splintered by mask mandates, social media warfare, and secrets. Craig sounds the warning in Producer's Notes (9:59), rallying the posse to get ready; Alain draws the map of conflict in the Beauclair Synopsis (20:57), threading the political grievance, personal betrayal, and escalating paranoia. Chris then steps into Philosopher's Corner (41:16), tuning into the film's narrative pulse. At The Round Table (54:36), the gang debates whether Eddington mirrors our fractured moment or indulges in fever dreams, before Reviews (1:28:46) and Mailbag (1:37:54) bring listener dispatches from the divide. As always, we tackle the philosophical and non-philosophical standoffs within, as every showdown leaves a mark.

Join Here: https://ow.ly/msoH50WCu0KIgnite your inner bounty hunter as Analytic Dreamz unleashes a gripping reaction to the official trailer for Star Wars: The Mandalorian and Grogu, unveiled September 22, 2025, and blasting into IMAX theaters May 22, 2026. Directed by Jon Favreau and co-written with Dave Filoni, this high-stakes sequel to the Disney+ saga thrusts Din Djarin (Pedro Pascal) and Grogu into the fray of a fractured galaxy: the Empire's remnants clash with the fragile New Republic, enlisting the armored warrior and his pint-sized Force-sensitive apprentice for a pulse-racing mission that promises epic dogfights, lightsaber skirmishes, and clan-of-two loyalty tested to the brink.Analytic Dreamz breaks down the trailer's visual feast—the resurrected Razor Crest slicing through hyperspace, Grogu's adorable yet potent Force feats like levitating foes and zapping monsters with green sludge, and heartwarming glimpses of Baby Yoda swimming or tinkering with Anzellan allies under Din's watchful beskar gaze. He spotlights triumphant returns: Garazeb "Zeb" Orrelios (voiced by Steven Blum) in full live-action glory, the irrepressible Babu Frik delivering "Good shot, baby!" quips, and a shadowy tease of Sigourney Weaver as enigmatic Colonel Ward, alongside Hutt cartel intrigue and rancor-like beast brawls that evoke classic practical-effects menace. Ludwig Göransson's score pulses with thematic thunder, bridging TV intimacy to cinematic spectacle.Does this trailer signal Star Wars' theatrical renaissance, weaving Rebels lore into a multiverse-ready epic, or does the post-Rise of Skywalker shadow demand bolder risks? Analytic Dreamz debates box-office potential, Grogu's evolving Jedi path, and how Favreau's vision elevates Mando's lone-wolf arc amid Imperial warlords' chaos—questioning if it outshines Ahsoka crossovers or sets up Rey's trilogy. 【 What We Talked About】 This episode we dove into Ari Aster's latest film "Eddington"—a movie that'll make you want to throw things at the screen, but also can't stop you from obsessively analyzing every frame. The director behind "Midsommar" and "Hereditary" sets his sights on a fictional small American town during the early pandemic chaos of May 2020, wrapping a horror story about social media tearing communities apart in Western film genre. Joaquin Phoenix's old-school sheriff Joe Cross goes head-to-head with Pedro Pascal's liberal mayor in this tiny New Mexico town, while the real winner turns out to be the faceless tech giant that's been planning to build a data center there all along. We used this deeply polarizing film to unpack everything from how BLM got weaponized on social media, to the toxic rules of cancel culture, to how conspiracy theories spread like wildfire through small-town neighbor networks. The ending is both alarming and defeatist: while everyone was busy fighting online, the real crisis—AI and Big Tech—had already quietly taken over. 【Support Us】 If you like our show and want to support us, please consider the following: Join our membership program: https://theamericanroulette.com/paid-membership/ Support us on Patreon: www.patreon.com/americanroulette Business Inquiries and fan mail: american.roulette.pod@gmail.com 【Timeline】 01:12 - Vibe Shift: Zeitgeist transformation from pandemic to now 03:44 - Film plot overview: Political showdown in a New Mexico town 07:57 - Did Ari Aster put his thumb on the scale in the fight between the sheriff and the mayor 16:57 - The social media-ization of BLM and commodification of "good trouble" 23:34 - How social media rules make everyone look bad 35:36 - How trauma becomes currency in the discourse 40:07 - Xiao Lan's "fake news field research" 46:31 - The film's nihilistic ending 49:31 - "SolidGoldMagikarp" Easter egg 52:18 - Real impact of AI data centers on American small towns 59:24 - Do artists have the right to create "cruel" art? 1:11:12 - Real social issues plaiguing today's America in "Eddington" 【Who We Are】 The American Roulette is a podcast dedicated to helping the Chinese-speaking community understand fast-changing U.S. politics. Today's Headlines: Trump, posting from London, declared “Antifa” a terrorist organization—even though it's not an actual organization—while mulling racketeering charges with AG Pam Bondi against unnamed left-wing groups. Meanwhile, watchdogs say Russia's “Operation Overlord” is pumping out fake news, memes, and even Pedro Pascal quotes to stir division after Charlie Kirk's assassination. The Pentagon, for its part, is eyeing machine learning-driven propaganda tools abroad, and even floating a recruitment campaign using Turning Point USA offices “in Kirk's honor.” Speaking of deals, the New York Times dropped a bombshell linking Trump's family cryptofirm World Liberty Financial to a $2B investment from the UAE, followed suspiciously by U.S. approval to send Emiratis advanced AI chips—despite intel concerns they'll land in China. In other news, House Oversight launched an investigation into ABC, Disney, and Sinclair over Jimmy Kimmel's suspension after FCC threats. Sinclair called the punishment “not enough” and demanded Kimmel apologize and cut a check to Turning Point USA. The same committee also summoned the CEOs of Discord, Reddit, Twitch, and Steam to testify on platform radicalization October 8. On the Turning Point front, Charlie Kirk's widow Erika Kirk has been unanimously elected as the org's new CEO. On immigration, a judge ordered Columbia grad Mahmoud Khalil to be deported to Syria or Algeria, citing omissions on his green card application—including past political affiliations—though supporters say it's punishment for his activism against the Gaza war. And to end this crazy week, Limewire (yes, Limewire) bought the Fyre Festival brand on eBay for $245K and says it's planning “real world experiences.” Resources/Articles mentioned in this episode: CNN: Trump says he's designating Antifa as a terrorist organization ABC News: Security analysts flag rise in Russian-created misinformation posts on social media following Kirk shooting The Intercept: Pentagon Document: U.S. Wants to “Suppress Dissenting Arguments” Using AI Propaganda NYT: In Giant Deals, U.A.E.
