What Our Trash Problem Says About Our Culture, with Sarah Newman

Every day, we throw things away, only to be forgotten forever. But society didn't always work in the same way. In this episode, we speak with University of Chicago scholar and anthropologist Sarah Newman to discuss her book, Unmaking Waste: New Histories of Old Things. An archaeologist by training, Newman discusses the history of trash across time—from the ancient Mayan civilization through today's disposable culture. She argues that other societies valued objects much more deeply, reusing and recycling items in innovative ways. But will we ever return to this kind of zero-waste mentality? Newman argues that true sustainability requires a radical, systemic overhaul of how products are designed, valued and dismantled. She challenges us to look beyond the recycling bin and imagine a world where waste isn't just managed, but systematically unmade if we are to genuinely rethink our relationship with garbage and reshape our future. This week, we're celebrating the dads, mentors, guardians, and father figures who helped shape the worlds we love. From wise leaders and tough-but-fair commanders to adoptive fathers and unlikely parental role models, we're showcasing the action figures and toy lines that gave us some of the most memorable father figures in pop culture. Whether they offered guidance, protection, discipline, or the occasional questionable life lesson, these characters left a lasting impact on generations of fans. We'll each bring examples from our collections, share stories about what made these characters stand out, and discuss the father figures who proved that being a hero isn't always about superpowers—sometimes it's about showing up when it matters most. We also spotlight Mamma's Vintage Toys & Collectibles during our Store Tour segment and talk about whether it's a shop that everyone should visit someday. I share a scene from my childhood that has never left me and tell you why Venezuelan cheeses are mostly fresh, unique and what they taught me about switching to alternatives that don't harm animals but give you a delicious experience that is also full of tradition. I get into why cheese has kept drawing us in for more and how we can start approaching going vegan when we are cheese lovers. I give you a bit of guidance as to what to look for in store-bought vegan cheeses, but especially some of the techniques available to you when you want to go on the adventure that is making your own. Our guest on this week's episode is Eric Fullerton, Vice President of Data Insights and Product Marketing at project44. There is now an agreement in place to end the fighting between the United States and Iran – and we hope it will be a lasting peace. But it will be a while before the world gets back to normal and we can recover from the blockage of the Strait of Hormuz. And that includes not just the flow of oil, but also products made from petroleum, such as plastics. We may find some products delayed or scarce due to waiting on plastic parts. Our guest joins DC Velocity's Senior News Editor Ben Ames to explain the situation and to predict how long it will be before these supply chains normalize. For the next month or so the entire world is focusing on North America and the biggest sporting event on the globe – soccer's World Cup. Putting on such a huge event takes a lot of planning – and lots and lots of logistics support. Senior Editor Victoria Kickham reports on the people who do the logistics work to make sure that the World Cup comes off without a hitch. We've seen a huge explosion of new robotics tools in our supply chain facilities, whether we're talking about handheld and wearable computers or material handling automation or mobile robots. This week Ben Ames shares a report he saw  on how workers can get the most out of those new tools. This was a study from researchers at Erasmus University in Rotterdam, the Netherlands. And they found that the best way to combine humans and robots for ideal results in warehouse work is for employees to circulate between working with various co-bot partners, not with a single dedicated robot.Articles and resources mentioned in this episode:project44Logistics workers score big in World Cup prepResearch shows that warehouse workers do best when they switch between co-botsVisit DC VelocityVisit Supply Chain XchangeSend feedback about this podcast to podcast@agilebme.comThis podcast episode is sponsored by: ID Label

Think drop shotting is just a deep-water finesse trick? Think again. In this episode, we dive into why shallow drop shotting might be one of the most underused techniques for catching pressured, cautious bass tucked around docks, laydowns, grass, and other shallow cover. We cover how to keep your soft plastic in the strike zone longer, why less movement often means more bites, and how downsizing your bait can turn a tough day around. We also break down leader length adjustments to keep your bait visible above bottom clutter, and how to switch between finesse and heavy-cover drop shot setups depending on where the fish are holding. If your shallow bites have been drying up under pressure, this episode will change how you approach it.Become a supporter of this podcast: https://www.spreaker.com/podcast/bass-cast-radio--1838782/support.Become a Patreon memebet now for less then a pack of worms you can support Bass Cast Radio as well as get each epsiode a day early & commercial free. What if the plastic container you're heating your leftover lunch in is actively rewriting your hormones? Environmental chemist Dr Paul Harvey unpacks the terrifying reality of microplastics, explaining how these tiny particles act like "micro knives," physically scratching our delicate gut lining and leaching creepy, hormone-disrupting chemicals into our system. Food scientist Dr Emma Beckett also weighs in, offering a much-needed reality check on balancing plastic panic with actual food safety. Then, we dive into "matressence," the massive, identity-shifting transition into motherhood. It turns out "baby brain" isn't a myth or a social media trend; real neuroimaging shows a mother's brain structurally prunes its grey matter to specialise for a baby, right as estrogen and progesterone drop off a perimenopause-level cliff. On Today's Episode –In this episode of Blunt Force Truth, hosts Mark Young and Matt Umbarger break down the bizarre societal trends driving current headlines before diving deep into a fascinating, data-backed conversation with Dr. Chris DeArmit, a PhD in material science and a leading independent authority on environmental plastics.First, Mark and Matt tackle the shocking financial anomalies of the modern world. They discuss the controversial "profit-from-murder" crowdfunding phenomenon surrounding the Carmelo Anthony case, juxtaposing public outrage over Elon Musk's potential trillionaire status against a society that willingly donates hundreds of thousands of dollars to the families of violent criminals. The hosts also take aim at Bernie Sanders' new legislative push regarding AI taxation and the roots of societal envy. Then, the conversation shifts to hard science as they welcome Dr. Chris DeArmit to separate environmental fact from media fiction. If you've been told that you eat a "credit card's worth of plastic a week" or that microplastics are causing a global health crisis, prepare to have your worldview challenged. Backed by an exhaustive review of over 6,000 un-funded, peer-reviewed scientific studies, Dr. DeArmit reveals the counterintuitive truths of life-cycle assessments. Discover why replacing plastic actually increases green house gases, why plastic degrades far faster than the public is led to believe, and how activist organizations use fear to trigger our ancient "lizard brains" for profit.Tune in for all the Fun Chris DeArmitt, PhD, FRSC, FIMMM, is a materials scientist with 30+ yearsof industry experience and the world's most cited independent authorityon plastics, microplastics, and environmental science. Unlike industrylobbyists or activist groups, he has no funding agenda, only thousandsof unpaid hours spent tracing claims back to the primary literature. What he found contradicts nearly everything the public has been told.He is the founder of the Plastics Research Council, an expert witness, and the author of two books endorsed by scientists and professorsworldwide. June is World Infertility Awareness Month, a month dedicated to the one in six couples worldwide who are quietly navigating the heartbreak, questions, and uncertainty that go along with the fertility journey. A short while ago, I had the privilege of launching my book, Your Fertility Blueprint. That day, I gave a presentation where I shared everything I wish I had known earlier in my own journey, including the framework that can change how we understand fertility, the hope that often gets lost along the way, and the truth that you are far more than your unexplained infertility diagnosis. I truly believe that something unexplained is simply something uninvestigated. In honour of Infertility Awareness Month, I'm sharing that presentation with you today. Whether you're in the thick of it yourself, supporting someone who is, or you simply want to understand the infertility experience better, this episode is for you. The products I used unknowingly, which poisoned my system with endocrine-disrupting chemicals: Hair straighteners Conventional beauty products Chemical chlorine-laced tampons Bath and Body Works fragranced lotions Plastic water bottles Bio: Stephanie Gray Stephanie Gray, DNP, MS, ARNP, AGNP-C, ABAAHP, FAARFM, is a functional medicine provider who helps men and women build sustainable, optimal health and longevity.  A nurse practitioner since 2009, Dr. Gray completed her doctorate focusing on estrogen metabolism from the University of Iowa in 2011 and holds a Master's in Metabolic Nutritional Medicine from the University of South Florida's Medical School. Dr. Gray is one of the Midwest's most credentialed female healthcare providers. She completed an Advanced Fellowship in Anti-Aging, Regenerative, and Functional Medicine in 2013 and became Iowa's first BioTe certified provider—now the state's only platinum provider with over 10,000 pellet placements. She is also certified as a SIBO doctor-approved practitioner, mold-literate provider, and ReCODE 2.0 practitioner for cognitive decline prevention. She co-founded Your Longevity Blueprint Nutraceuticals with her husband, Eric. After her own ten-year fertility journey, she now specializes in helping couples optimize reproductive health through functional medicine. Having lost her grandmother to vascular dementia, she is personally committed to helping families avoid cognitive decline. Dr. Gray founded the Integrative Health and Hormone Clinic in Hiawatha, Iowa. In this episode: I describe my 10-year journey of trying to conceive, including testing, treatments, IUIs, IVF, failed transfers, and my emotional struggle  How, even as a nurse practitioner with a doctorate in functional medicine and over 15 years of clinical experience, I still struggled with infertility Why I believe unexplained infertility is simply uninvestigated infertility I outline six major factors that contributed to my infertility, explaining why they needed to be addressed together, not in isolation How the functional and integrative medicine approaches differ from those of conventional medicine I highlight the windows for egg and sperm development and explain how changes made during that time can improve egg and sperm quality The combination of conventional and functional medicine treatments I used, which ultimately led to the birth of my sons Links and Resources: Interested in purchasing Your Fertility Blueprint or watching the full book launch presentation? The Devil's Ledger | Week of June 8th, 2026 On this week's episode of The Devil's Ledger, we kick things off with an honest—and slightly humbling—moment: a long-overdue shoutout to the New York Knicks. Not quite back on the bandwagon… but definitely watching with a mix of excitement and regret. Then we dive into The Creepiest Thing I Heard This Week—a trip to Pine Bush, New York, home of the annual UFO Fair. What feels like a quirky small-town festival quickly reveals something deeper: decades of reported sightings, unexplained aerial phenomena, and a community that didn't deny the stories… it embraced them. On The Devil Within Season Five—What We Built… And What We Buried—comes to a powerful close with two of the most disturbing government programs ever uncovered: • MK-Ultra • The Tuskegee Syphilis Study Two vastly different operations. One unsettling truth: what happens when institutions designed to protect people begin to use them instead? On Criminal Mischief After last week's shocking case, Carolyn returns with something a little less graphic—but no less terrifying. Less gore.
More intrigue.
Same relentless tension. On The Culture of Criminal Cool Season One wraps this week—and it hits harder than expected. The story of Adam Diaz has never been just about crime. It's about identity, power, and the cost of becoming the persona you create. And if you're worried about what fills that slot next week… don't be. On The Slippery Fresh off CrimeCon Las Vegas, Scott and Nancy are back with another deep dive into deception. New con.
New victim.
And another unraveling that proves—eventually—the truth always catches up.

The plastic-drenched, disposable world we live in didn't happen by accident. It was slowly, methodically built by Big Oil. They're doing everything in their power to get people to use as much plastic as possible, all so they can make money from every single molecule they extract from the ground. And right now, they're pouring billions of dollars into plans to double, or even triple, plastic production by 2050. This week, award-winning environmental journalist Beth Gardiner joins us to pull back the curtain on who's behind all this plastic and why. We explore why production is skyrocketing despite consumer pushback, how the myth of recycling keeps us distracted, and why naming the real culprits is the first step toward true systemic change. Thank you for all you do every day! I have learned so much from you and really appreciate your help. My children's school right next to a cell tower (it sits in the middle of their playground). Is there anything I can do to protect them from the high levels of radiation they are getting on a daily basis? I have looked into wearable EMF protection but am not sure if any actually work. Do you have a recommendation? Is there anything I can be doing to help my children's bodies prepare for these high levels on a daily basis?      Kelly: Love your podcast and your willingness of your time to help all of us! I did a 21 day detox in Nov then did an OATS test, had a lot of overgrowth & started CBO protocol Jan. 27. From the beginning, I started struggling with anxiety & insomnia. Middle of month 2 had to stop protocol due to waking up 2-4 am in panic and not able to get back to sleep. My sleep came back on line & I started protocol again very slowly, had to stop florafilm but continued with other 2. It wasn't long before the insomnia and anxiety started again. Eventually had to stop again. Have been off protocol 19 days but no improvement in insomnia & anxiety. At a loss of what to try next -even tried sleeping pills. Also no idea how i will ever feel comfy enough to restart cbo protocol after all this. Help pls!!        Nibal: Goodmorning Dr, Im nibal from.lebanon and its a pleasure to follow you. I need to know more about fighting candida protocol if thats possible please. Thank you, With regards       Mohamed: Hey dr.cabral, been listening to your podcast for a few years now. Thanks for all your quality info and product at Equilife. I work in healthcare, I constantly have to use hand sanitizer. I'm sure it's not just alcohol in there. What can I do to mitigate this. Really health conscious, I take DNS, Omega 3 support, Vit D3/K2. Extra Vit C.. I also occasionally use taurine. Is there a healthy alternative? For hand sanitizer or is there a cream I can use on my hands to blunt the absorption. What are your thoughts? Thanks       Mary: Hi SC! Ive been a daily listener for years. Thank you for your sinceriety and the education you share. 1) Whats your opinion on plasma pen treatments and sofwave treatments for collogen production (specifically jowels and 'turkey neck')? A while back you answered a question regarding collogen treatments and said you were ok w most but there was one that involved a heat based treatment you were not a fan of...i couldnt catch which one that was. 2) Will you please explain what happens when we put plastic in the dishwasher? I know we are not supposed to and i'm curious what happens. Do microplastics contaminate other dishes in the dishwasher or what happens?  oh also, any thoughts on procell therapy?       Thank you for tuning into today's Cabral HouseCall and be sure to check back tomorrow where we answer more of our community's questions!    - - - Show Notes and Resources: StephenCabral.com/3767 - - - Get a FREE Copy of Dr. Cabral's Book: The Rain Barrel Effect - - - Join the Community & Get Your Questions Answered: CabralSupportGroup.com - - - Dr. Cabral's Most Popular At-Home Lab Tests: > Complete Minerals & Metals Test (Test for mineral imbalances & heavy metal toxicity) - - - > Complete Candida, Metabolic & Vitamins Test (Test for 75 biomarkers including yeast & bacterial gut overgrowth, as well as vitamin levels) - - - > Complete Stress, Mood & Metabolism Test (Discover your complete thyroid, adrenal, hormone, vitamin D & insulin levels) - - - > Complete Food Sensitivity Test (Find out your hidden food sensitivities) - - - > Complete Omega-3 & Inflammation Test (Discover your levels of inflammation related to your omega-6 to omega-3 levels) - - - Get Your Question Answered On An Upcoming HouseCall: StephenCabral.com/askcabral - - - Would You Take 30 Seconds To Rate & Review The Cabral Concept? Laura DiGirolamo: Exposing the Lipstick Industry's Big Dirty Secret

    The Darin Olien Show

What if one of the most toxic products in your home isn't your cleaning spray, your cookware, or your water bottle… but the lip gloss sitting in your purse right now? In this eye-opening and deeply alarming conversation, Darin Olien sits down with clean beauty innovator, attorney, and consumer advocate Laura D'Alamo to expose what may be one of the biggest blind spots in modern health and beauty. After surviving triple-negative breast cancer and a near-fatal battle with COVID, Laura embarked on a two-year investigation into the cosmetic industry that uncovered a startling regulatory gap surrounding lip products, microplastics, toxic ingredients, and consumer safety. Together, they explore how lip products are regulated as external-use cosmetics despite being chronically ingested, why 80–90% of lip products may contain microplastics, how outdated regulations fail to reflect modern usage patterns, and why ingredients banned in food can still legally appear in products applied directly to the lips. They also discuss the launch of the Lip Service Alliance, the future of food-grade lip care, and how consumers can drive industry-wide change through awareness and purchasing decisions.     What You'll Learn Why lip products may represent a major overlooked toxic exposure pathway How cosmetics regulations differ from food and pharmaceutical regulations Why lip products are treated as external-use products despite being ingested The hidden role of microplastics in lip glosses, lipsticks, and lip balms Why flavored lip products may increase chronic ingestion How lip tissue differs biologically from normal skin The shocking absorption rates associated with oral mucosal tissue Why titanium dioxide is banned in European food but still used in lip products How outdated usage assumptions fail to reflect modern beauty habits Why the fastest-growing lip product market is girls ages 9–17 The mission behind the Lip Service Alliance How consumers can influence change through Lip products are uniquely positioned at the intersection of ingestion, absorption, and chronic exposure, yet most regulatory systems still treat them as if they simply sit on the surface of the skin. Whether or not every concern raised in this conversation proves true over time, one thing is undeniable: consumers deserve better science, better transparency, and better products. And when enough people demand change, industries always find a way to evolve."

Inside our brains. Inside our blood vessels. Inside unborn children. But while the scale of the problem is staggering, the solution begins with everyday choices. What you drink from. What you heat your food in. What you filter. What you buy. Your body is not a landfill—and reclaiming your health starts with refusing to treat it like one."     Bibliography/Sources Primary Scientific Studies Bornstein, S. R., et al. (2025).
