In this week's episode, Tom, Robert and Anushka discuss the future of Nigel Farage, with several Tory MPs wanting him to join their party. They also look at Sir Keir Starmer's claim that former PM Liz Truss really become a conspiracy theorist. And does Prince Harry deserve taxpayer-funded personal security when he's in the UK? The royal has lost his latest legal battle.
Sometimes a series of events can encapsulate the state of the United Kingdom, the cynical manipulation of tensions surrounding Gaza for party political and personal advantage., the relationship between the media and the political establishment , and the reality of the position of the SNP at Westminster.Last Wednesday saw the House of Commons descend into chaos as the Speaker, Sir Lindsay Hoyle , broke with Parliamentary procedure, and the advice of the Clerks, to allow a Labour amendment to the SNP Opposition Day motion calling for an immediate ceasefire and an end to Israeli collective punishment. We examine those events , the role of the Speaker, the ramifications of his decision and his reasons for making it.We also give our immediate reaction to the UK government's statement on Gaza this Tuesday afternoon. The statement given as the reason for Hoyle to reject the SNP call for an SO24 debate. A debate he had promised to grant the SNP last week. The focus has shifted from the situation in Gaza, aided by political commentators , on to alleged threats to MPs' security hard on the heels of Lord Walney's report on political violence. Who is Walney? What was in his report? Can he be trusted as an impartial actor in the current context of pro Palestinian protests?Meanwhile , while claiming "words are important" , the Tory Party is mired in an Islamophobia crisis with Rishi Sunak and a string of ministers refusing to say that ex Deputy Chair of the party Lee Anderson was racist in his attack on Sadiq Khan. This while ignoring Suella Braverman and ex PM Liz Truss's recent similar outbursts. Weakness or a symbol of a hierarchy of racism within the Conservative Party?Today is the 50th anniversary of the long secret McCrone Report with its revelations on the potential impact on the Scottish economy of North Sea oil and its implications for Scottish independence. The National has published the report in full. Two of Westminster's best-connected journalists, Sky News's Sam Coates and Politico's Jack Blanchard, guide us through their predictions of how British politics will play out over the next seven days. This week, Prime Minister Rishi Sunak visits Northern Ireland following the plans to restart Stormont and the swearing-in of Michelle O'Neill as the first nationalist first minister. After two years without a working government, how will the new dynamic with the new leadership look? Back in London, Rishi Sunak and the Home Office will need to deal with the spiralling political debate surrounding a chemical attack in Clapham last week, and how effectively the asylum system works. Plus, with more air strikes by the United States in the Middle East over the weekend, is Whitehall worried about sleepwalking into a war with Iran? And finally, the parties are warming up for an election - the Labour Party is approaching its deadline for submitting manifesto policies, and the Tories have a new faction backed by former PM Liz Truss. Jack and Sam look at how that might shape up. Email with your thoughts and rate how their predictions play out: jackandsam@sky.uk or jackandsam@politico.co.uk
In this the second of a two part series, co-pilots Pearson and Halligan dig into the data files for some of their most explosive voyages on the rocket of right thinking, from 2023.The rocket featured many unique interviews from stowaways from many different worldly professions. In September the rocket also had a visit from former PM Liz Truss who stopped by to tell our co-pilots why current PM Rishi Sunak needs to ditch the 2030 Net Zero target in favour of more traditional conservative policies, also taking a candid look back at her own brief premiership.Back in October, in light of the shocking events happening in the Middle East, the rocket welcomed IDF soldier Ben who gave his personal account of the harrowing events happening on the ground in Israel. Former Prime Minister Liz Truss is disputing a £12,000 bill relating to her use of the Chevening country house in Kent. This bill covers her use of Chevening house during 2022, when she was foreign secretary and preparing to be leader of the Conservative Party. UK correspondent Gavin Grey says the rules are clear about what can be claimed back by those who had access to Chevening and Truss is being billed for costs incurred when she was running for office. Welcome back fellow cynics as your co-hosts Thomas Brancato and Jorge Shaft continue our weekly roundup series, Cynical Talk. This week, from the vault, we are releasing a conversation with Shakir McClean which was recorded during the political storm resulting in the eventual resignation of Mr. Kwarteng and eventually the PM Liz Truss. Although politics has progressed in leaps and bounds since, we felt this snippet of political recent history might still be quite relevant today. At that time, Liz Truss' future seemed very uncertain, and we soon discovered that meant the end of her premiership. A future episode will deal with the ramifications of her short tenure and the arrival of PM Rishi Sunak. But rather than leave the episode in the vault of outdated 'furniture', we thought much of the discussion surrounding David Cameron, Theresa May, Boris Johnson and Liz Truss was still relevant and timely. Let us know what you make of 12 years of Tory rule. We hope you enjoy tuning in as much as we enjoy piecing these together! Drop us a comment anytime, anywhere.
Is the UK economy headed for its longest ever recession? Tim Harford, BBC presenter and “Undercover Economist”, unscrambles the latest figures, explains what happens when the economy starts to shrink, and chats to Adam about his uni lessons with former PM Liz Truss. Also, as Just Stop Oil suspend their protests that have parked traffic on the M25, we ask what makes an effective protest with Helen Pankhurst, great-granddaughter of suffragette Emmeline Pankhurst, and Georgia Catt, whose latest podcast explores the world of radical environmentalists. Today's Newscast was made by Danny Wittenberg with Miranda Slade, Paige Neal-Holder and Madeleine Drury. The technical producer was Ben Andrews. The series producer is Tim Walklate.
Britain's shaky economy is on the brink of recession as Office for National Statistics data reveals a fall in GDP.It comes as former chancellor Kwasi Kwarteng popped up in his first interview since being sacked, and criticised his former boss and political soulmate, ex-PM Liz Truss. He says they are still “friends” but has not returned her missed call from several days ago.It comes as Office for National Statistics data shows output dropped 0.2 per cent from July to September. Now there's an increasing likelihood the fourth quarter will see another dip after the surge in interest rates triggered by Kwarteng's disastrous mini-Budget in September. Those ONS figures follow Bank of England forecasts could be the longest recession since records began. The Leader's joined by Alfie Stirling, director of research and chief economist at the New Economics Foundation, and Evening Standard deputy political editor David Bond. I see a theme at the Labour party conference over the weekend was taking potshots at National leader Chris Luxon. It was reported that Grant Robertson made “19 references to National” and 9 to Luxon personally. When asked if all this reference to the Nats meant they were worried about them as a serious threat, Robertson of course denied it. He added some extra potshots that the Nats were ‘out of touch and inexperienced'. Which in and of itself if laugh out loud irony if ever I heard it. Out of touch? This from a government who has never seen a bigger disconnect between the real world and their beehive Wellington echo chamber? Are you kidding me? No one is more out of touch than this government, and by saying the Nats are the ones out of touch proves it. As for inexperienced.. we could take that seriously if anyone inside the Labour government had any experience or had ever run a business or knew any facts or data around their own portfolios. To top it off.. Robertson, who, disappointingly for Michelle Obama, only knows how to ‘go low', managed to get a sneering personal dig in as well and give Luxon a nickname.. dubbing him ‘Liz Luxon' after the UK's ill fated tax cut PM Liz Truss. Given Luxon was out visiting an aged care facility and actually doing some work, as opposed to name calling, he didn't hear any of this, but his deputy Nicola Willis did. She replied by saying that Robertson “should focus on his job rather than name calling and petty political attacks”. One political editor said it was "embarrassing" of Robertson, and called him "panicked and petty". But this is what we can expect more of. Hypocritical as it may be, it's all the so called party of kindness is capable of.. bullying. Even Queen of Kindness herself Jacinda Ardern, when challenged on the rudeness of Grant Robertson's name calling, said she stood by the approach. What does that tell you? It tells you to expect more of this gutter stuff. It's all they've got. And if I was Luxon and the National party I'd take it as a compliment. In fact he did, he said he's flattered they're fixated on him. Labour's scared, they're so on the ropes going into this next election, (and the latest poll proves it) that that's all they've got. Potshots and name calling. Robertson will be attack dog in chief. The PM will smile broadly and back up everything he says, or at least won't resile from it. I guess that's all they can do when they can't stand on their record. I mean they do have records, just ones in the wrong direction. Record gang numbers, record youth crime, record debt, record job vacancies, record truancy, record social housing queues. Nicola Willis said, “Labour should stop talking about National and refocus on delivering for struggling New Zealanders who expect the Government to do better for them.” Well that's what an adult would say, but sadly it's falling on deaf ears. The game playing from the gutter has begun, and I'd hazard a guess this won't be the last of the name calling. Which at the end of the day is a contributing factor to what makes people cynical about politicians and puts them off voting entirely. We deserve better than to be part of this sewer system of childishness… but sadly I don't think we're going to get out of it for awhile yet.See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.
You'd be forgiven for mistaking the UK for Australia in the late 2000s right now. In the space of 6 weeks, the UK has had three Prime Ministers, with Rishi Sunak being declared PM overnight, after PM Liz Truss resigned after only 6 weeks, when she took over from Boris Johnson following the partygate scandal which saw his party abandon him. So, like the questions we asked when Liz Truss took over - who is Rishi Sunak? And what kind of leader can we expect him to be? One thing we do already know about him is that he's making history. To help us understand is senior lecturer in the department of government and international relations at the University of Sydney, Doctor Stuart Jackson.See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

Only six weeks into the job, Britain's Prime Minister Liz Truss is calling it quits. Jeanne Armstrong spoke to journalism professor Eamonn O'Neill to trace that history-making fall.
UK Prime Minister Liz Truss has resigned due to a disastrous economic plan and splits within the Conservative Party. Her six-week tenure as Prime Minister makes her the shortest-serving PM in the country's history.
With the UK government seeing more changes in personnel than an average season at Chelsea FC and the economy on the verge of total collapse, we bring you a little update on the cornucopia of clownery that is British politics in 2022. After the announcement of former Chancellor Kwasi Kwarteng's neoliberal wet dream of a Growth Package sent the value of the Pound hurtling downwards, we have seen several weeks of unabated chaos, and of course the resignation of PM Liz Truss which happened in the time between the recording of this episode and its release. Happy times! /// SHOW NOTES /// /// CREDITS /// Hosts: Aarjan Guest: Mic Wright Production: Connor Music: Cardio /// The Dave Clarke Five - Sha Na Na Hey Hey Hey Kiss Him Goodbye

Emma hosts Dr. Nicholas Kardaras to discuss his recent book Digital Madness: How Social Media Is Driving Our Mental Health Crisis-and How to Restore Our Sanity. Then, Emma is joined by Eugene Puryear, co-host of the Breakthrough News show, to discuss the recent civil and social unrest in Haiti. Emma first runs through updates on FED policies bringing a big win for predatory payday lenders and a whole lot of bad stuff otherwise, before diving into the turmoil in the UK with PM Liz Truss stepping down just 44 days into her term. Doctor Nicholas Kardaras then joins as he and Emma get right into looking at remote schooling during the pandemic as the full melding of education and technology, with COVID coming at the tail end of a decade-and-a-half-long decline of mental health coinciding with a massive increase in screen time and immediately seeing rates of depression triple and rates of screentime double. After a brief conversation on the greater proof of correlation between screentime and rates of loneliness and feelings of isolation (with a very clear generational trend), they dive into how the whistleblowing of Frances Haugen brought to light how actively aware Facebook/Instagram was of the impact of their platforms on driving these conditions, and why the greater toxicity of these platforms isn't due to their unique algorithms (which really rely on the same playbook as any other platform) but their popularity. Wrapping up, they tackle the biggest policies the US government could take in breaking up the power of Big Tech and creating accountability for the impact of their products, exploring what a repeal of Section 230 would mean, what an anti-trust approach would entail, and the actual endpoints of their toxic programming. Then, Eugene Puryear gets right into parsing through the political developments in Haiti since the assassination of President (by decree at that point) Jovenel Moïse, somehow bringing about an even less legitimate reign of US-backed Ariel Henry, and solving none of the issues of unrest and state deterioration – instead pushing even more neocolonial policies onto a people who have been failed by a century out US interventionism. After a quick history of US intervention in Haiti, Puryear and Emma tackle the particular failure of the Biden Administration's treatment of Haiti, with their promotion of Henry largely stemming from his acceptance of their abusive policies to Haitian migrants – something that already forced the resignation of a US Special Envoys for Haiti. They wrap up the interview by parsing through what we can do to push US legislators towards developmental and state-building policies grounded in Haitian autonomy. And in the Fun Half: Emma is joined by Matt and Brandon as Valerie from AZ calls in to discuss Mar-a-Lago modding, Sandy from Ontario dives into her city's politics, and Ben Shapiro discusses the difference between fake Jews (Israel Haters) and real Jews (Ben Shapiro disciples). Lara Logan and Eric Bolling discuss the shadow of the end of days that looms over America, and Chris from Hawaii dives into the evolution of the manosphere and the integral nature of projection and fear to that community's rhetoric. The crew also dives into DeSantis' entrapment of formerly-incarcerated people into voter fraud and Matt Walsh's devastating denouncement of anime. On today's show, British Prime Minister Liz Truss has resigned after 45 days in office, making her the U.K.'s shortest tenured leader. What happened? We ask Nicholas Allan, a reader in politics in the the Royal Holloway at the University of London. Plus, educators are using TikTok in the classroom, but is it a good idea? We chat with Dr. Paul Bennett, the director of Halifax-based firm Schoolhouse Institute and adjunct professor of education at Saint Mary's University. And when is an organ donor really dead? This is the question some are asking as new technology has emerged that makes for better organ donations but blurs some ethical lines. This week Jez Fredenburgh talks to two more farmers about their regenerative journey and how they have gradually developed more mixed farm businesses based around natural processes – family farmer George Ford from North Somerset and farm manager Jake Freestone from Gloucestershire. George has transitioned his family's intensive pig unit to a much more mixed business including a beef suckler herd, pasture-reared chickens, and soon-to-be pasture-reared Xmas turkeys. As manager of Overbury estates, Jake first started practicing min till over a decade ago, and has become well known for his work on soil health including long rotations, and companion cropping. He has more recently re-introduced livestock to the estate. They talk about what started their transition to more nature-based farming, how their businesses have changed as a result, and what they wished they'd known when they started. The chat also veers onto what Jake and George make of the current political climate in Westminster and what they'd like to see if PM Liz Truss ever had an epiphany about the need to support a transition to more agro-ecological farming practices.
Former Health Secretary Jeremy Hunt is the new Chancellor of the Exchequer.Kwasi Kwarteng is out after spending barely enough time in Number 11 Downing Street to measure up the curtains. The former Chancellor has been ditched along with another cornerstone economic policy from his mini-Budget, the corporation tax freeze, signalling another u-turn by the Prime Minister.Kwarteng was in post for only 38 days - the second shortest tenure in British history. It comes after turmoil in the markets sparked by billions in tax cuts that the Bank of England has been racing to shore up this week.To analyse the latest developments, their historical context and what the political future holds for PM Liz Truss, we're joined by Evening Standard political editor Nic Cecil and Dr Jeevun Sandher, head of economics at the New Economics Foundation and a political scientist at King's College London. Data released by the Office for National Statistics shows the UK economy shrank by 0.3 per cent in August, meaning we're on the brink of a recession.ONS figures also showed GDP - a measure of the health and size of a country's economy - fell more sharply than had been predicted. While the majority of experts expected a flat August, news of the 0.3 per cent shrinkage follows growth of just 0.1 per cent in July.It comes after Bank of England governor Andrew Bailey warned its emergency intervention to shore up UK debt will end on Friday, leading to increasing worries about pension funds, which are significant holders of UK government debt and index-linked bonds. Now business secretary Jacob Rees-Mogg, also complaining about his own mortgage increase, is pointing the finger at the Bank's interest rate policy and global markets for the whole sorry situation, trying to deflect blame away from Chancellor Kwasi Kwarteng's mini-Budget.All these toxic economic ingredients made for a particularly fractious Prime Minister's Questions as PM Liz Truss faced off against Sir Keir Starmer at the dispatch box.So, what kind of a financial mess are we in, and how are Londoners coping on the ground ahead of bleak winter? To help us navigate the latest economic small print and discuss the challenges ahead, the Leader's joined by Evening Standard business editor Jonathan Prynn. Before the news of Queen Elizabeth the Second's death, soaring energy and consumer prices dominated public discussion in the UK. Consumers have seen their purchasing power deteriorate at a record pace. What is the role of the British royal family in the modern age? How can a monarchy stabilize a democracy? How will Britain's new leadership forge a path forward?
